Sixteen athletic teams within Barton Community College were recognized recently by the NJCAA in announcing its 2021-22 Academic Teams of the Year achievements.
Earning a cumulative 3.23 GPA across Barton's twenty-two athletic teams reporting to the NJCAA list, ten placed among their respective sport's Top-20 leaderboard as 1,078 NJCAA teams achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The Department had seven teams within the nation's top ten rankings, women's swimming finishing as national runner-up with the women's basketball team the next highest placing in 3rd out of 110 teams.
Barton's volleyball claimed department bragging honors with a 3.79 combined GPA. Placing 6th out of 138 teams in the division, the Cougars' streak of three consecutive "Academic Team of the Year" honor ended but claimed their 4th straight AVCA Honor Roll distinction representing being in the top 20% of the NJCAA. The high level academic achievement is the 6th overall for the program and the 15th time receiving AVCA recognition in the classroom.
The top six teams within the department came from the women's side, basketball a close second behind volleyball at 3.74 with the golf team third at 3.60.
Men's tennis led the male teams in the Department at 3.44 in placing 15th nationally with soccer next at 3.34 in placing 9th nationally.
Amongst fellow KJCCC (Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference) members, four Barton teams were first in their respective sport: women's basketball, women's golf, and women's outfield track and field.
