
Great Bend Post Sports
The field was wide open for the girls at Hoisington's Corner Classic Friday evening. The Great Bend wrestlers took advantage, scoring 172 points for the win. Scott City scored 131 points for second, followed by Liberal with 125.5 points, and Hoisington with 121 points for fourth. Larned placed sixth with 63.5 points.
Senior Daizy Gomez followed up Thursday's big win against Dodge City with a title at 130 pounds. Ranked No. 3, she pinned all five opponents in 90 seconds or less, including three in under a minute. Hoisington senior Daijah Jones, ranked No. 6 (3-2-1A), pinned all three pool opponents, with two matches decided in 16 seconds or less. She won a 61-second match in the semifinals before losing to Gomez in the finals.
Fourth-ranked Kaylea McMullen cruised to the title at 125 pounds. All three of her pool wins came in under a minute, with two going faster than 30 seconds. She pinned Eureka in the title match. Aly Feil placed fifth for the Lady Panthers.
The 105-pound bracket featured a pair of the best in Kansas. Great Bend freshman Camdyn Post, ranked No. 6, pinned her first two opponents before getting pinned by second-ranked Isabela Gutierrez of Liberal in the third period. Post responded with a 14-second pin against Hoisington to secure second place.
The 170-pound bracket featured an all-Great Bend final. Kirra Stevens went 4-0 in pool matches with all wins in 88 seconds or less. In the other pool, Lea Nokes also went 4-0 with four pins. Stevens needed just 24 seconds to pin Nokes for the title. Larned's Kinley Atteberry pinned Hoisington's Nevaeh Graves for third place.
The 190-pound bracket also featured premiere competition. Great Bend's fourth-ranked Natalee Daniels pinned all three pool opponents in 62 seconds or fewer. She reached the finals by pinning her Plainville opponent. Unbeaten Haylee Martinez of Liberal, ranked No. 3, won a 6-4 decision against Daniels for the championship.
Area wrestlers filled the semifinals at 110 pounds. Larned junior Liliana McKenna pinned her two pool opponents, pinned Hoisington freshman Jayda Bailey in the semifinals, then pinned Great Bend's Keira Leyva for the title. Leyva reached the finals with four wins by fall. Bailey defeated teammate Devin Czamek in the consolation finals.
Ellinwood's Keighyn Dombroski won out at 115 pounds. The junior picked up a pair of quick pins in pool matches, won a 41-second match against Scott City in the semifinals, then defeated Russell's Mya Trevino by forfeit in the championship. Hoisington's Paige Schwartz went 3-0in pool matches with two pins before losing a 6-3 match to Trevino. Schwartz pinned her Scott City opponent for third.
The absence of top-ranked Jaden Ney of Russell left the door open for other wrestlers. Hoisington's fourth-ranked Lyrica Orosco finished the day at 4-0 with four pins, three in under a minute. Great Bend's Josie Blevins finished the day at 2-2 with a pair of pins for third place.
Hoisington's sixth-ranked Haylee Holinde won the 235-pound bracket. She was cruising with four-straight pins before downing Eureka 3-0 in the title match.
Larned's Cara Herbert was crusing with four pins in pool matches before losing by fall to Scott City in the championship match at 120 pounds. Hoisington's Kassie Linsner placed fourth in the bracket. Great Bend's Braelyn Turner lost an opening match the champion from Scott City but finished the day at 3-2 with three pins, including two in 24 seconds or less, for fifth place.
Great Bend freshman Trinity Aumiller finished fourth at 100 pounds. The freshman went 2-1 in pool matches with a pin, a forfeit, and a loss by fall. She was pinned by the winner from Liberal in semifinal action, then lost by fall to Plainville in the consolation finals.
Sixth-ranked Ella Normandin of Plainville won the 140-pound bracket. Great Bend's Shatarah Newton placed third. Great Bend's Marissa Esparza finished fourth at 155 pounds. Hoisington's Claire Birzer led area wrestlers at 135 pounds with a fifth-place finish.
