Freshman Charley Wheeler of the Barton Community College softball team has been named the Week 3 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Pitcher of the Week following her work in the circle during the Cougars' 1-1 week of competition.
The right-hander logged 11.2 innings across two appearances, compiling a 1.80 earned run average while allowing just three earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts. Wheeler did not surrender an extra-base hit during the week, limiting opposing hitters to singles and consistently keeping traffic manageable.
Wheeler first delivered a tough-luck outing against Northeast Oklahoma A&M, permitting just one earned run over 4.2 innings of work. She followed with a complete-game effort in Barton's 4-2 road victory over No. 18-ranked Seminole State College, scattering six hits and allowing two earned runs across seven innings to improve to 2-2 on the season.
The honor marks Wheeler's first conference recognition of her collegiate career and the first weekly distinction of the season for the Cougars.
Barton returns to action Friday in Iola, Kansas, for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader at Allen Community College to conclude its ten-game road swing. The Cougars will then open the home portion of their schedule Tuesday, hosting Rose State College for a 1:00 p.m. twinbill.
