The weather is cooling just in time for some cleanup. Great Bend citizens will have the opportunity to dump items for free beginning Saturday, Sept. 24 through Sunday, Oct. 2 as part of the city-wide cleanup. City Administrator Kendal Francis spoke about the event at Monday's council meeting.

"Remember we'll have the construction dumpsters at Sunflower Diversified's lot at 5605 10th Street," he said. "We're looking for volunteers that can meet that morning at 9 a.m. at Sunflower's lot. And also, if you need assistance, please contact me."

The cleanup begins Saturday morning at 9 a.m. The city will have several construction-sized dumpsters at Sunflower Diversified, accepting a variety of trash that includes tires, trash, metal, mattresses, and appliances. Hazardous household materials, colored plastic containers, and plastic food wrap are among the items that will not be accepted. The city will lock the gates for the cleanup at the close of each day to prevent unwanted dumping.

The city is still looking for volunteers that could assist those unable to transport trash on Saturday. As of Tuesday afternoon, 18 pickups had been scheduled. Anyone wishing to volunteer or anyone needing a volunteer can contact Francis at the city office by calling (620) 793-4111, or by emailing kfrancis@greatbendks.net.
