While the City of Hoisington is working toward demolishing the vacant Windgate apartment complex, the removal does not include burning the structures down. Residents may see smoke coming from the apartments on Tuesday, May 16, but the smoke will be visible for a training exercise only.
Hoisington City
Manager Jonathan Mitchell said several area fire departments will conduct a
smoke training at the apartment complex Tuesday evening.
"If you see smoke pouring out of one of those apartment buildings next Tuesday, please know it is a training exercise," said Mitchell. "Don't call 911. It's a training exercise to help our folks learn more on how to handle smoke and react to that."
The city acquired the Windgate apartments in January 2022 for $200,000 with the
intent to raze the structures to create housing lots. Asbestos mitigation began
in March and the city council will next receive bids for the demolition.
