The No. 3 ranked Barton Community College men's track and field team split its squad across a pair of meets late in the week, competing Thursday at the Alex Francis Classic hosted by Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, before sending a select group Friday to the John McDonnell Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The Cougars chalked up five personal bests in the two days of competition including a new national qualifying mark, with additional movement within the program record book in their final tune-up ahead of the postseason.
In Hays, Barton's throws unit once again set the tone with three personal best efforts across multiple events. Gabe Daugherty led the way in the discus, recording a personal best and new national qualifying mark of 52.33m (171-08) to place second overall. DeAndre Bristol followed up with a statement performance in the javelin, capturing the event title with a personal best throw of 65.06m (213-05), moving up from ninth to fifth on Barton's all-time list while already holding a national qualifying standard.
In the hammer throw, Ilia Ciui delivered a runner-up finish with a 58.01m (190-04) mark, while Bristol added a personal best of 52.61m (172-07) to place third, both already meeting national qualifying standards.
On the track, Taigon Peterkin recorded a personal best 21.63 in the 200m to place seventh, while Da'Marcus Brutus added a personal best 2:01.31 in the 800m.
Competing Friday in Fayetteville, Barton's jumpers took on a high-level field with a pair of strong finishes. Devon Williams placed second in the long jump with a leap of 7.42m (24-04.25), while Chavez Penn captured the triple jump title at 16.08m (52-09.25), adding to his season's national qualifying mark and standing eighth within the program's top-10.
Barton will now turn its attention to the postseason beginning on Thursday in Arkansas City for the three-day KJCCC/Region 6 Championships at the Phillips Track and Field Complex.
