Of all the contested Barton County Commission races in Tuesday's primary, only Tricia Schlessiger had to go against a seated member in District 4's Jon Prescott. Schlessiger still pulled off the win with 636 votes compared to 570 for Prescott.

"I was very pleased and very surprised," Schlessiger said. "We both ran a good campaign so I was happily surprised."

Schlessiger will join the commission in January with 20-plus years of experiencing in the banking industry. She has previously served her community as a 4-H leader, volleyball coach, township treasurer, and Ellinwood Rotatarian. But the mother of six says she's most excited about bringing her farm experience to the commission.

"I'm most looking forward to bring maybe a little bit of a more rural perspective to the commission, and just getting started and getting to work," she said. "I already spoke with Jon and he agreed to make the transition as easy as possible. We're going to start working together next week and I'm excited about that. We're going to meet in Pawnee Rock and have some meetings before January."

Schlessiger will Duane Reif and Donna Zimmerman as three new faces on the 5-person commission in January.
