Some of the work at the Barton County Courthouse was expected as part of the HVAC Renovation Project. A damaged roof from the July 16 storm that swept through the area was not part of the original plan. County Administrator Matt Patzner laid out a proposal to fix the roof at Tuesday's Barton County Commission meeting.
"After insurance adjusters inspected the building, it was suggested repairs be made," he said. "In addition to storm damage, work will address measures called for in the HVAC project."
The county received two bids for the work. Roofmasters Roofing and Sheet Metal will complete the brunt of the work and Kruse Construction will do subcontract work to install new drains. The total project comes with a price tag of $397,313. Commission Chair Shawn Hutchinson said the work needs to be completed.
"Matt and I have spent a lot of time on this, making sure we're going to get it right, not just for us, but for the future," he said. "We feel like it's very important to have a good roof on the courthouse considering we're spending a lot of money renovating the courthouse. It'd be an awful shame to have it ruined by a storm."
Most of the cost will be covered by insurance. The county does have a $25,000 deductible. With an extra warranty against 90-mile-an-hour winds and uplift, and additional work outside the scope of insurance coverage, the county will pay a total of $40,745.
