Great Bend Post
The kennels are full at the Golden Belt Humane Society, just south of Great Bend.
The animal shelter was hoping to find forever homes for many of the furry pets this past Saturday during the nationally-sponsored Clear the Shelters program, but with many events happening this past weekend in Great Bend, the results were not as expected.
Humane Society Director Heather Acheson
said because of this, the same specials are still being offered and it all
starts with filling out an application.
"There are some requirements," said Acheson. "All other pets in your home have to be current on their rabbis vaccination. If you're renting, we'll get a hold of the landlord to make sure you're allowed to have pets."
The Golden Belt Humane Society has waved the adoption fees for dogs and cats. Normal
adoption fees for dogs are $150 and $40 for cats. If your application is
approved and you meet the inspection, the animals are free.
The Humane Society
also fully vets the animals with health screenings and vaccinations that are
needed. With a full shelter, keeping the animals healthy is imperative for
Acheson and her staff, especially against the super-contagious kennel cough.
"It affects every dog and we've had it at the shelter three times," said Acheson. "Distemper (viral disease with domestic dogs), we have luckily not ran into. It's not fun to treat or watch, but that is part of the animal world and we have to move around it."
The Humane Society is located at 151 South U.S. 281 Highway and is open 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday - Friday and 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday.
