While much is being made of a new police station in Great Bend that will be finished this September, the arrival of the new Justice Center will free up space at the current police station.

The Great Bend Police Department will relocate to the new building at the intersection of 12th Street & Baker Avenue with a need for more space. The $8.8 million project will nearly triple the square footage of the current 7,500 square-foot structure on Williams.

Subject to change, Interim City Administrator Logan Burns said the city will move inspection, code enforcement and possibly public lands offices into the police station on Williams once the switch is made.

"The inspection department has been inside the fire department forever," said Burns. "We'll start making that transition into its own building. Just the space inside of that will be good for not as many employees. Toward the end of this year, a lot of departments will have new locations."

The current police station is butted up against the east side of the Great Bend Recreation Commission offices and auditorium, and last year the Great Bend Rec showed interest in making use of the space.

The current police station on Williams was built in 1938.
