MILWAUKEE (AP) — Trevor Megill struck out Jonny DeLuca with runners on second and third to wiggle out of a ninth-inning jam as the Milwaukee Brewers escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the World Series. DeLuca’s strikeout came after Tampa Bay’s Liam Hicks had grounded into an apparent game-ending double play that was overturned after a video review. Replays determined Brewers shortstop Cooper Pratt’s right foot was slightly off the bag when he reached to catch a high throw from second baseman Brice Turang. Jacob Misiorowski allowed one run over five innings to earn the win.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City’s perfect start to the Premier League season has ended with a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa. Nicolas Jackson scored both goals for Villa against Enzo Maresca’s City, which was aiming for an eighth straight win in the league. It also extended Villa’s outstanding recent run to six wins from seven games in all competitions. Jackson is up to seven goals for the season in all competitions. He fired the opener inside six minutes at Villa Park. Erling Haaland headed City level in the second half, but Jackson got his second and the winner with a first-time finish that squirmed under goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. City fell to a fourth defeat at Villa Park in as many seasons.

PARIS (AP) — The NFL has closed its “NFL House” in Paris as the city braces for street protests with a heavy police presence and storefronts boarded up. The league announced the closure to fans on Saturday morning through its “OnePass” app and it came a day after it said its pop-up NFL shop would also be shut Saturday — in both cases citing “potential accessibility issues.” Security concerns have overshadowed the NFL’s debut in Paris. The New Orleans Saints will play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday at Stade de France in the league’s first-ever regular-season game in France. New Orleans also announced that “Saints House has been postponed until Sunday.”

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jacob Misiorowski broke the record for fastest World Series pitch with the very first offering of this year’s Fall Classic, a 103.5 mph fastball from the Milwaukee Brewers’ fireballer to the Tampa Bay Rays’ Yandy Díaz. Misiorowski allowed one run and four hits over five innings with three strikeouts, leaving with a 2-1 lead. Misiorowski’s first pitch, taken for a ball above the strike zone, was listed at 103.4 mph on the stadium video boards but clocked at 103.5 by MLB’s Statcast system. Aroldis Chapman of the Chicago Cubs had set the mark for a Series pitcher at 103.2 mph in 2016.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino says he has the backing of the “vast, vast majority” of soccer despite his failed plan to sell stakes in the World Cup. Infantino is seeking re-election next year as the head of soccer’s world governing body in the face of attempts to force him to stand down in the wake of the divisive plan. He infuriated soccer leaders in Europe, North America and Asia over the proposal to sell profits in the World Cup through a commercial subsidiary.

BOSTON (AP) — Jayson Tatum addressed his frustrations with the ongoing drama surrounding the relationship between he and Jaylen Brown after Brown's trade to the Philadelphia 76ers. Instead of discussing his 36-point performance in the Celtics' win over the Knicks, Tatum spent most of his postgame news conference explaining his side of the situation. Brown responded to comments Tatum made on a YouTube video in which he said he was surprised with by the trade with a "cap" emoji on Instagram, implying it was untrue. Tatum expressed frustration with how their relationship has been portrayed, emphasizing there's no animosity, despite the perception otherwise.

SOLDEN, Austria (AP) — American Paula Moltzan breaks through with her first career World Cup win and Mikaela Shiffrin finishes the women’s giant slalom in seventh as the Alpine ski racing season opened on Saturday. Shiffrin led after the first run in Sölden, Austria, on the Rettenbach glacier. But her second run wasn’t good enough and sent the Olympic slalom champion down to seventh. When Shiffrin crossed the line, it was Moltzan who was left celebrating her first World Cup win at age 32. Moltzan says “It feels like a fairy tale right now, pretty unreal.” Shiffrin has called this campaign an “exploration season” in which she will reduce her slalom races and focus more on giant slalom and super-G.

KALAMA, Wash. (AP) — Reliably Democratic Colorado and Washington have ballot measures that would bar transgender girls from some sports competitions. Groups pushing the measures say it's not fair to have transgender girls competing. Opponents say the proposals are discriminatory and could add barriers for any girls who want to join teams. Both sides believe that if either passes, it could open the door to voters in other Democratic-controlled states being asked to implement bans. Measures are also on the ballot in Arizona and Nebraska to strengthen bans in those states.

ATLANTA (AP) — Players in the WNBA Finals say they are focused on the upcoming game and not President Trump’s comments about the national anthem. Trump spoke a rally on Thursday in Iowa and criticized players for leaving the court before the national anthem is played. It has been part of WNBA players' pregame routine for several years, dating back to at least when they played an entire season in Florida in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Teams have left before the anthem is played to raise awareness for social justice issues or simply to continue to get ready for the game. When asked Friday about the president's comments, Atlanta and Golden State players who are competing for the WNBA championship said they were locked in on the next game, not the president's comments.

Dale Brown, who coached some of the most successful basketball teams in LSU history, as well as one of the Tigers' most famous players in Shaquille O’Neal, has died. He was 90. LSU says Brown died on Friday. He was just over a week away from what would have been his 91st birthday. Brown was named AP Coach of the Year in 1981, was a four-time SEC Coach of the Year and has the most wins of a coach in program history. The highlights of his 25 years as LSU’s coach included two trips to the NCAA Final Four with his 1981 and 1986 teams.
