Near the end of each USD 428 Board of Education meeting, the board approves contributions made to Great Bend schools by various businesses and individuals. At the close of the June meeting, the board revealed that all school supplies had been purchased for Lincoln Elementary School students for the upcoming school year. Principal Misty Straub said it started with a big donation.
"They provided us with tons of school supplies," she said. "When I say tons, it filled the back of a pickup truck and the cab of the pickup truck. It wasn't quite enough to fulfill the supply list for all of our students but it was a good chunk."
Straub was able to combine that donation with small leftover funds from last year to purchase the rest of the supplies. With the many characters and designs available on backpacks and pencil boxes, she did leave those up to families to purchase.
"No matter what their socioeconomic status, they do want to buy their own backpacks, I find," she said. "So it is handy just to get donations for the supplies that go into the backpacks, like the supply list."
Enrollment for USD 428 students will begin in August. The first day of school for grades K-6, as well as seventh and ninth graders, is Aug. 14.
