At a meeting earlier this month, the Great Bend City Council held a public hearing for a deteriorating accessory building at 2421 12th Street. The council voted to tear the building down if repairs are not completed by early April.

An inspection was conducted on the house at the same location during a search warrant by the Barton County Sheriff’s Office. Great Bend Assistant City Administrator Logan Burns said multiple electrical boxes have exposed wiring and mold was noted in the living room ceiling.

"Currently, there are no utilities to the structure," said Burns. "We have multiple makeshift wood-burning stoves inside. During the search warrant, somebody was arrested for actually living inside one of these rooms that the stove was in."

The exterior shows shingles missing, windows boarded up and the front porch deteriorating.

"You'll see where the foundation is just open to any moisture," said Burns. "There was a white cooler that had feces inside of it that they thrown on top of the roof during the course of the investigation on the search warrant."

The council passed a resolution Monday night to set a public hearing for the dangerous structure on May 6 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
