KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement are searching for a suspect in another Kansas City homicide.

Just after 7p.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to the area of 18th and Prospect on a reported shooting. When officers arrived, they located a witness who had summoned them to the area of 18th and Benton advising he heard several gun shots near that location, according to KCPD&nbsp;Officer Alayna Gonzalez.

Officers responded to 18th and Benton, where they located a victim in a grassy area near a convenience store. The man was unresponsive, and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. EMS responded to the scene and declared the victim deceased at that time.

Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel responded to the scene to begin gathering witness statements and collecting any evidence. Several witnesses remained in the area and assisted detectives in making progress on identifying an adult male person of interest. Police have not released the name of the victim.

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Colorado coach Deion Sanders disclosed Monday that he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer but after surgery his oncologist considered him cured, so he plans to coach this season.

Dr. Janet Kukreja, the director of urologic oncology at the CU Cancer Center/UCHealth University of Colorado hospital, said Sanders had his bladder removed as part of the surgical plan.

“It was dynamic. It was tough. It wasn’t a cakewalk. It wasn’t easy,” said Sanders, who arrived to his news conference wearing a cowboy hat and overalls along with sunglasses, which he took off after getting choked up. “That was a fight, but we made it.”

Sanders, who turns 58 next month, spoke on the eve of fall camp as he enters his third season overseeing the Buffaloes. He brought his medical team with him to discuss his diagnosis. A section of his intestine was reconstructed to function as a bladder.

Sanders said he lost about 25 pounds, leading him to joke, “I was like Atlanta Falcons Prime at one point.”

He remained upbeat through the entire ordeal.

“He never folded one time and never wavered,” team trainer Lauren Askevold said. "You couldn’t ask for a better patient because he wants to get up and get going right. So it’s been awesome. It’s been a hectic journey, but there’s a blessing very in disguise with all this.”

The charismatic coach returned to campus last week and announced on social media, “Back and Feeling Great!” He’s missed football camps in Boulder this summer amid reports that he’s been ill.

On Sunday, the production crew of “Well Off Media,” which chronicles Sanders and the Buffaloes, posted a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6igq44y-7BI">video on YouTube</a>&nbsp;of the coach’s first meeting with the team. In the middle of the clip, there was a scene, dated May 9, where Sanders said: “I don’t know if I’m ready mentally, emotionally. Last night was tough, yesterday was tough, because I had to make a will. That’s not easy at all, to think that you may not be here.”

Sanders has dealt with other health issues. Many of them have involved his left foot since having two toes amputated in 2021 because of blood clot issues while he was coaching at Jackson State. He missed media day in 2023, his inaugural year at Colorado, after a procedure to remove a blood clot from his right leg and another to straighten toes on his left foot.

In March,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/deion-sanders-contract-extension-colorado-55b2d4471c40ca552d895d196ec5b3b3">Sanders signed a contract</a>&nbsp;extension through the 2029 season.

The Buffaloes kick off the season on Aug. 29 against Georgia Tech at Folsom Field. It will be the first season in quite some time that he hasn’t coached one of his sons. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders was drafted by the Cleveland Browns while Shilo, a safety, is in camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes went 4-8 in his first season and 9-4 last season, with an appearance in the Alamo Bowl. They have big shoes to fill in replacing Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.

Just after 11p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for aggravated robbery and aggravated battery in the 3600 block of Everett Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 17-year-old man was listed as the victim when it was reported unknown suspects battered him in his driveway and stole personal property.

Police: Kansas teen battered in alleged robbery at his home

NEW YORK (AP) — When Amrita Bhasin, 24, learned that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-japan-south-korea-tariff-25-2c725e8f06367e20f9300c1081ea4ec0">products from South Korea</a>&nbsp;might be subject to a new tax when they entered the United States, she decided to stock up on the sheet masks from Korean brands like U-Need and MediHeal she uses a few times a week.

“I did a recent haul to stockpile,” she said. “I bought 50 in bulk, which should last me a few months.”

South Korea is one of the countries that hopes to secure a trade deal before the Aug. 1 date&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-economy-trade-tax-404840988e58dbfd491afe00f2e605f6">President Donald Trump set</a>&nbsp;for enforcing nation-specific tariffs. A not-insignificant slice of the U.S. population has skin in the game when it comes to Seoul avoiding a 25% duty on its exports.

Asian skin care has been a booming global business for a more than a decade, with consumers in Europe, North and South America, and increasingly the Middle East, snapping up creams, serums and balms&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/3ee3040d1f1245f88b524f0afa641cc2">from South Korea</a>, Japan and China.

In the United States and elsewhere, Korean cosmetics, or K-beauty for short, have dominated the trend. A craze for all-in-one “BB creams” — a combination of moisturizer, foundation and sunscreen — morphed into a fascination with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/shower-basics-tiktok-social-media-dermatologist-8a96743d7b86c329703f7736a7306961">10-step rituals</a>&nbsp;and ingredients like snail mucin, heartleaf and rice water.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hyundai-georgia-evs-electric-vehicles-ad746b27194d05703b941e76e56df9fc">Vehicles</a>&nbsp;and electronics may be South Korea's top exports to the U.S. by value, but the country shipped more&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/influenced-skincare-routine-mental-health-f59bb09114ab93323e3a47197a1ad914">skin care</a>&nbsp;and cosmetics to the U.S. than any other last year, according to data from market research company Euromonitor. France, with storied beauty brands&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/a4bd8559a742184924010635267196c7">like L'Oreal</a>&nbsp;and Chanel, was second, Euromonitor said.

Statistics compiled by the U.S. International Trade Commission, an independent federal agency, show the U.S. imported $1.7 billion worth of South Korean cosmetics in 2024, a 54% increase from a year earlier.

“Korean beauty products not only add a lot of variety and choice for Americans, they really embraced them because they were offering something different for American consumers,” Mary Lovely, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, said.

Along with media offerings&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/d9c6d003653795153157ebf98876db77">such as “Parasite”</a>&nbsp;and “Squid Games,” and the popularity of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bts-suga-south-korea-military-service-boy-band-a0fd2487c9859805f50a891b7f2b93a0">K-pop bands like BTS</a>, K-beauty has helped boost South Korea’s profile globally, she said.

“It’s all part and parcel really of the same thing,” Lovely said. “And it can’t be completely stopped by a 25% tariff, but it’s hard to see how it won’t influence how much is sold in the U.S. And I think what we’re hearing from producers is that it also really decreases the number of products they want to offer in this market.”

Senti Senti, a retailer that sells international beauty products at two New York boutiques and through an e-commerce site, saw a bit of “panic buying” by customers when Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/asian-grocery-stores-tariffs-prices-77d7209f542a027eafd5d0d4bb213dbf">first imposed</a>&nbsp;punitive tariffs on goods from specific countries, manager Winnie Zhong said.

The rush slowed down after the president paused the new duties for 90 days and hasn't picked up again, Zhong said, even with Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/trump-sets-25-tariffs-on-imports-from-japan-and-south-korea-ap-explains-47af6b9746994faf957afff2e98e1968">saying on July 7</a>&nbsp;that a 25% tax on imports from Japan and South Korea would go into effect on Aug. 1.

Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia subsequently&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-japan-indonesia-philippines-6e1829cb570d945d13c00f07059a41d4">reached agreements</a>&nbsp;with the Trump administration that lowered the tariff rates their exported goods faced — in Japan's case, from 25% to 15% — still higher than the current baseline of 10% tariff.

But South Korea has yet to clinch an agreement, despite&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/south-korea-us-trade-trump-tariffs-e91036b57be93e1ead7d777f0717971f">having a free trade agreement</a>&nbsp;since 2012 that allowed cosmetics and most other consumer goods to enter the U.S. tax-free.

Since the first store owned by Senti Senti opened 16 years ago, beauty products from Japan and South Korea became more of a focus and now account for 90% of the stock. The business hasn't had to pass on any tariff-related costs to customers yet, but that won’t be possible if the products are subject to a 25% import tax, Zhong said.

“I’m not really sure where the direction of K-beauty will go to with the tariffs in place, because one of the things with K-beauty or Asian beauty is that it’s supposed to be accessible pricing,” she said.

Devoted fans of Asian cosmetics will often buy direct from Asia and wait weeks for their packages to arrive because the products typically cost less than they do in American stores. Rather than stocking up on their favorite sunscreens, lip tints and toners, some shoppers are taking a pause due to the tariff uncertainty.

Los Angeles resident Jen Chae, a content creator with over 1.2 million YouTube subscribers, has explored Korean and Japanese beauty products and became personally intrigued by Chinese beauty brands over the last year.

When the tariffs were first announced, Chae temporarily paused ordering from sites such as YesStyle.com, a shopping platform owned by an e-commerce company based in Hong Kong. She did not know if she would have to pay customs duties on the products she bought or the ones brands sent to her as a creator.

“I wasn’t sure if those would automatically charge the entire package with a blanket tariff cost, or if it was just on certain items,” Chae said. On its website, YesStyle says it will give customers store credit to reimburse them for import charges.

At Ohlolly, an online store focused on Korean products, owners Sue Greene and Herra Namhie are taking a similar pause.

They purchase direct from South Korea and from licensed wholesalers in the U.S., and store their inventory in a warehouse in Ontario, California. After years of no duties, a 25% import tax would create a “huge increase in costs to us,” Namhie said.

She and Greene made two recent orders to replenish their stock when the tariffs were at 10%. But they have put further restocks on hold "because I don’t think we can handle 25%,” Namhie said. They'd have to raise prices, and then shoppers might go elsewhere.

The business owners and sisters are holding out on hope the U.S. and Korea settle on a lower tariff or carve out exceptions for smaller ticket items like beauty products. But they only have two to four months of inventory in their warehouse. They say that in a month they'll have to make a decision on what products to order, what to discontinue and what prices will have to increase.

Rachel Weingarten, a former makeup artist who writes a daily beauty newsletter called “Hello Gorgeous!,” said while she’s devoted to K-beauty products like lip masks and toner pads, she doesn’t think stockpiling is a sound practice.

“Maybe one or two products, but natural oils, vulnerable packaging and expiration dates mean that your products could go rancid before you can get to them,” she said.

Weingarten said she’ll still buy Korean products if prices go up, but that the beauty world is bigger than one country. “I’d still indulge in my favorites, but am always looking for great products in general,” she said.

Bhasin, in Menlo Park, California, plans to keep buying her face masks too, even if the price goes up, because she likes the quality of Korean masks.

“If prices will go up, I will not shift to U.S. products,” she said. “For face masks, I feel there are not a ton of solid and reliable substitutes in the U.S.”

Rather than stocking up on their favorite sunscreens, lip tints and toners, some shoppers are taking a pause due to the tariff uncertainty.</p><p>Los Angeles resident Jen Chae, a content creator with over 1.2 million YouTube subscribers, has explored Korean and Japanese beauty products and became personally intrigued by Chinese beauty brands over the last year.</p><p>When the tariffs were first announced, Chae temporarily paused ordering from sites such as YesStyle.com, a shopping platform owned by an e-commerce company based in Hong Kong. She did not know if she would have to pay customs duties on the products she bought or the ones brands sent to her as a creator.</p><p>“I wasn’t sure if those would automatically charge the entire package with a blanket tariff cost, or if it was just on certain items,” Chae said. On its website, YesStyle says it will give customers store credit to reimburse them for import charges.</p><p>At Ohlolly, an online store focused on Korean products, owners Sue Greene and Herra Namhie are taking a similar pause.</p><p>They purchase direct from South Korea and from licensed wholesalers in the U.S., and store their inventory in a warehouse in Ontario, California. After years of no duties, a 25% import tax would create a “huge increase in costs to us,” Namhie said.</p><p>She and Greene made two recent orders to replenish their stock when the tariffs were at 10%. But they have put further restocks on hold "because I don’t think we can handle 25%,” Namhie said. They'd have to raise prices, and then shoppers might go elsewhere.</p><p>The business owners and sisters are holding out on hope the U.S. and Korea settle on a lower tariff or carve out exceptions for smaller ticket items like beauty products. But they only have two to four months of inventory in their warehouse. They say that in a month they'll have to make a decision on what products to order, what to discontinue and what prices will have to increase.</p><p>Rachel Weingarten, a former makeup artist who writes a daily beauty newsletter called “Hello Gorgeous!,” said while she’s devoted to K-beauty products like lip masks and toner pads, she doesn’t think stockpiling is a sound practice.</p><p>“Maybe one or two products, but natural oils, vulnerable packaging and expiration dates mean that your products could go rancid before you can get to them,” she said.</p><p>Weingarten said she’ll still buy Korean products if prices go up, but that the beauty world is bigger than one country. “I’d still indulge in my favorites, but am always looking for great products in general,” she said.</p><p>Bhasin, in Menlo Park, California, plans to keep buying her face masks too, even if the price goes up, because she likes the quality of Korean masks.</p><p>“If prices will go up, I will not shift to U.S. products,” she said. “For face masks, I feel there are not a ton of solid and reliable substitutes in the U.S.”</p><p>___</p><p>AP audience engagement editor Karena Phan in Los Angeles contributed to this report.</p>

KANSAS CITY —A teen wounded in a shooting on July 20 in Kansas City died from his injuries.

Just before midnight July 20,&nbsp;the victim identified as 17-year-old William R. Watson, according to KCPD Officer Alayna Gonzalez was transported to the hospital by private vehicle suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. 

Assault squad detectives, who worked the initial investigation, were notified over the weekend&nbsp; Watson had died of his injuries.

Detectives preliminarily believe the incident may have occurred in the area of 69th Street and Bellefontaine Avenue and are working to determine the events that lead up to the shooting.

Homicide detectives have now assumed responsibility for the case.

But they were also just the start of what can be a drawn out process.

The subcommittee agreed to redact the names and personal information of any victims, but besides that, their demand for information is quite broad, encompassing “un-redacted Epstein files.”

As the parameters of the subpoena are drafted, Democrats are demanding that it be fulfilled within 30 days from when it is served to Attorney General&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/pam-bondi">Pam Bondi</a>. They have also proposed a list of document demands, including the prosecutorial decisions surrounding Epstein, documents related to his death, and communication from any president or executive official regarding the matter.

Ultimately, Republicans who control the committee will have more power over the scope of the subpoena, but the fact that it was approved with a strong bipartisan vote gives it some heft.

The committee chairman, Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., said he told the speaker that “Republicans on the Oversight Committee were going to move to be more aggressive in trying to get transparency with the Epstein files. So, we did that, and I think that’s what the American people want.”

Comer has said that he is hoping that staff from the committee can interview Maxwell under oath on Aug. 11 at or near the federal prison in Florida where she is serving a lengthy sentence for child sex trafficking.

In a congressional deposition, the subject typically has an attorney present to help them answer — or not answer — questions while maintaining their civil rights. Subjects also have the ability to decline to answer questions if it could be used against them in a criminal case, though in this instance that might not matter because Maxwell has already been convicted of many of the things she will likely be asked about.

Maxwell has the ability to negotiate some of the terms of the deposition, and she already conducted&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/epstein-maxwell-justice-department-interview-053ad2ae16f31b9d7300340d5f9349c5">1 1/2 days of interviews with Justice Department officials</a>&nbsp;this past week.

Democrats, however, warn that Maxwell is not to be trusted.

“We should understand that this is a very complex witness and someone that has caused great harm and not a good person to a lot of people,” Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the oversight committee, told reporters this week.

Committee Republicans also initiated a motion to subpoena a host of other people, including former President Bill Clinton, former Sen. Hillary Clinton as well as the former attorneys general dating back to Alberto Gonzales, who served under George W. Bush.

It's not clear how this sweeping list of proposed subpoenas will actually play out, but Comer has said, “We’re going to move quickly on that.”

Trump is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/capitol-siege-donald-trump-lawsuits-subpoenas-congress-d4318c5a2622f8f973b966e834a5631e">no stranger to fighting against congressional investigations</a>&nbsp;and subpoenas. And as with most subpoenas, the Justice Department can negotiate the terms of how it fulfills the subpoena. It can also make legal arguments against handing over certain information.

Joshua A. Levy, who teaches on congressional investigations at Georgetown Law School and is a partner at Levy Firestone Muse, said that the results of the subpoena “depend on whether the administration wants to work through the traditional accommodation process with the House and reach a resolution or if one or both sides becomes entrenched in its position.”

If Congress is not satisfied with Bondi's response — or if she were to refuse to hand over any information — there are several ways lawmakers can try to enforce the subpoena. However, that would require a vote to hold Bondi in contempt of Congress.

It's practically unheard of for one political party to vote to hold one of its own members in contempt of Congress, but the Epstein saga has also cut across political lines and driven a wedge in the GOP.

Growing pressure on the Trump adminitration for disclosure

Ultimately, the bipartisan vote to subpoena the files showed how political pressure is mounting on the Trump administration to disclose the files. Politics, policy and the law are all bound up together in this case, and many in Congress want to see a full accounting of the sex trafficking investigation.

“We can’t allow individuals, especially those at the highest level of our government, to protect child sex traffickers,” said Rep. Summer Lee, D-Pa., a committee member.

The Trump administration is already facing the potential for even more political tension. When Congress comes back to Washington in September, a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/congress-jeffrey-epstein-trump-24bf59310361b709a7cf6ee881a42e0e">bipartisan group of House lawmakers</a>&nbsp;is working to advance to a full House vote a bill that aims to force the public release of the Epstein files.

What could happen next in the Epstein investigation

Kansas Task Force 1 returned home Sunday from Texas.&nbsp;

The task force conducted search and rescue operations (hasty searches, primary searches, water searches and ground searches) in Kerr County following the tragic flooding earlier this month. Kansas Task Force 1 left Kansas on July 12.

The KS-TF1 response was the result of an Emergency Management Assistance Compact request from the State of Texas to the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. EMAC (e-mack) is a multistate, mutual aid agreement that facilitates interstate assistance in disaster response and recovery operations. The response was coordinated through the Kansas State Fire Marshal Search and Rescue Program.

Following the EMAC agreement, Kansas and assisting departments will be reimbursed for costs associated with the deployment.

🎥Kansas swift-water rescue team is home from Texas

KANSAS CITY, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), with assistance from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, arrested 38-year-old Shawn M. Harris, of Kansas City, Kansas, connected to the shooting death of Elijah Ming, a deputy of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office.

At 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Harris was released from the hospital and arrested on requested charges of capital murder of a law enforcement officer. He was then booked into the Johnson County Jail. Harris is due to make his first court appearance in the case on Monday afternoon, according to online jail records.

Just before 3:30 p.m. Saturday, a woman called requesting that police accompany her as she moved out of a residence, due to concerns about her safety. She reported that when friends tried to assist her, a man threatened them with a firearm. At around 3:45 p.m., a deputy from the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office and an officer from the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department (KCKPD) arrived at the residence at 2627 S. 30th&nbsp;St.

Preliminary information indicates as they approached the front door, a male subject inside the house fired multiple rounds at the officers. Rounds struck 34-year-old Deputy Elijah Ming. The KCKPD officer was uninjured. Multiple law enforcement officers then responded to the scene.

As responding officers attempted to provide aid to Deputy Ming, gunfire was exchanged between the man, later identified as Shawn Harris, 38, of Kansas City, Kansas, and officers from the KCKPD and the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office. Harris was shot during the exchange of gunfire while he barricaded in the home.

Deputy Ming was transported to the hospital. Despite lifesaving measures, he died of his injuries.

Police negotiated with Harris over the phone until he surrendered and came out of the house, just after 5 p.m. He was taken into custody. EMS transported Harris to an area hospital where he was treated for his injuries.&nbsp;

Suspect accused of killing Kan. deputy moved from hospital to jail

CLAY COUNTY, Mo. —A Kansas man drowned just before 9:30p.m. Saturday in Smithville Lake in Clay County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 23-year-old Kansas City, Kansas man was in the water, went under and did not resurface. The man's body was recovered by the Water Patrol at the same location. He was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported from the scene by Forensic Medical. 

He was not wearing a life jacket, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of drowning victims.

Kansas man drowns at lake in Missouri

EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) — The United States and the European Union agreed on Sunday to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/tariffs">trade framework</a>&nbsp;setting a 15% tariff on most goods, staving off — at least for now — far higher import duties on both sides that might have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-economy-trade-tax-404840988e58dbfd491afe00f2e605f6">sent</a>&nbsp;shock waves through economies around the globe.

The sweeping announcement came after President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen met briefly at Trump's Turnberry golf course in Scotland. Their private sit-down culminated months of bargaining, with the White House deadline Friday nearing for imposing punishing tariffs on the EU's 27 member countries.

“It was a very interesting negotiation. I think it’s going to be great for both parties,” Trump said. The agreement, he said, was “a good deal for everybody” and “a giant deal with lots of countries.”

Von der Leyen said the deal “will bring stability, it will bring predictability, that’s very important for our businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.”

As with other, recent tariff agreements that Trump announced with countries including&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-japan-tariffs-autos-taxes-trade-5a5afd77dad958f8fae656a371df6f09">Japan</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-starmer-trade-deal-beef-g7-52bea5eb383a0b45d0d83e1982d277bf">United Kingdom</a>, some major details remain pending in this one.

Trump said the EU had agreed to buy some $750 billion worth of U.S. energy and invest $600 billion more than it already is in America — as well as make a major military equipment purchase. He said tariffs “for automobiles and everything else will be a straight across tariff of 15%” and meant that U.S. exporters ”have the opening up of all of the European countries.”

Von der Leyen said the 15% tariffs were “across the board, all inclusive” and that “indeed, basically the European market is open.”

At a later news conference away from Turnberry, she said the $750 billion in additional U.S. energy purchases was actually over the next three years — and would help ease the dependence on natural gas from Russia among the bloc’s countries.

“When the European Union and the United States work together as partners, the benefits are tangible,” Von der Leyen said, noting that the agreement “stabilized on a single, 15% tariff rate for the vast majority of EU exports" including cars, semiconductors and pharmaceuticals.

But von der Leyen also clarified that such a rate wouldn’t apply to everything, saying that both sides agreed on “zero for zero tariffs on a number of strategic products,” like all aircraft and component parts, certain chemicals, certain generic drugs, semiconductor equipment, some agricultural products, natural resources and critical raw materials.

It is unclear if alcohol will be included in that list.

“And we will keep working to add more products to this list,” she said, while also stressing that the “framework means the figures we have just explained to the public, but, of course, details have to be sorted out. And that will happen over the next weeks.”

In the meantime, there will be work to do on other fronts. Von der Leyen had a mandate to negotiate because the European Commission handles trade for member countries. But the Commission must now present the deal to member states and EU lawmakers, who will ultimately decide whether or not to approve it.

Before their meeting began, Trump pledged to change what he characterized as “a very one-sided transaction, very unfair to the United States.”

"I think both sides want to see fairness,” the Republican president told reporters.

Von der Leyen said the U.S. and EU combined have the world's largest trade volume, encompassing hundreds of millions of people and trillions of dollars and added that Trump was “known as a tough negotiator and dealmaker."

Trump has spent months threatening most of the world with large tariffs in hopes of shrinking major U.S. trade deficits with many key trading partners. More recently, he had hinted that any deal with the EU would have to “buy down” a tariff rate of 30% that had been set to take effect.

But during his comments before the agreement was announced, the president was asked if he'd be willing to accept tariff rates lower than 15%, and he said “no.”

Their meeting came after Trump played&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-scotland-protests-golf-starmer-tariffs-1c9b7265e56c6ec01821e1c33eb9de14">golf for the second straight day</a>&nbsp;at Turnberry, this time with a group that included sons Eric and Donald Jr. In addition to negotiating deals, Trump's five-day visit to Scotland is built around&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-scotland-golf-presidential-vacations-43364ff17b7ae49602909644be9fd260">golf and promoting properties bearing his name</a>.

A small group of demonstrators at the course waved American flags and raised a sign criticizing British Prime Minister&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/keir-starmer">Keir Starmer</a>, who plans his own Turnberry meeting with Trump on Monday.

Other voices could be heard cheering and chanting “Trump! Trump!” as he played nearby.

On Tuesday, Trump will be in Aberdeen, in northeastern Scotland, where his family has another golf course and is opening a third next month. The president and his sons&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-scotland-golf-course-opening-legal-issues-92aa09043e036d6aa87ad99e5fd755bb">plan to help cut the ribbon on the new course</a>.

The U.S. and EU seemed close to a deal earlier this month, but Trump instead&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-european-union-49893d3983cd60384ca2e8557ca2c7b1">threatened the 30% tariff rate</a>. The deadline for the Trump administration to begin imposing tariffs has shifted in recent weeks but is now firm and coming Friday, the administration insists.

“No extensions, no more grace periods. Aug. 1, the tariffs are set, they’ll go into place, Customs will start collecting the money and off we go," U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told “Fox News Sunday" before the EU deal was announced. He added, however, that even after that “people can still talk to President Trump. I mean, he’s always willing to listen.”

Without an agreement, the EU said it was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/europe-trump-tariffs-retaliation-trade-eu-vdl-ad6cde9920b6336789b9e2e9935c69fb">prepared to retaliate</a>&nbsp;with tariffs on hundreds of American products, ranging from beef and auto parts to beer and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/europe-trump-tariffs-wto-list-products-7ecab3aad84cb108c96cc6b242fcedc8">Boeing airplanes</a>.

If Trump eventually followed through on his threat of tariffs against Europe, meanwhile, it could have made everything from French cheese and Italian leather goods to German electronics and Spanish pharmaceuticals more expensive in the United States.

KANSAS CTY—One person died and several others were injured in a partial building collapse Sunday in Kansas City.

Just before 3p.m., Sunday, the Kansas City Fire Department responded to a reported building collapse in the 3700 block of&nbsp;of Broadway in Kansas City, according to Baattakion Chief Michael Hopkins.

First responders reported a partial collapse of the Family Dollar buildings parapet wall and façade. The collapse took the life of one individual and critically injured another. Two others were treated and released on the scene. The fatality was identified as a 68-year-old man and who was pronounced dead on the scene. One patient, a 50-year-old woman was transported in critical condition at a local hospital. Two others were evaluated on the scene but refused additional treatment and were released.

The Kansas City Police department will be conducting the investigation due to the fatality. Broadway was closed from 36th street to 38th street while Police conducted their investigation, and public works removed debris from the roadway.

Just before noon July 19,&nbsp;a Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 2014 Chevy Cruz for an alleged traffic infraction on U.S. 75 Highway near 110th Road, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 Justice Marie Scott, 25, of Grand Forks, South Dakota and Steven Dale Hawkins Jr., 25, of Walker, Texas were arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of cocaine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Couple accused of cocaine possession during Kan. traffic stop

KANSAS CITY —Search crews recovered the body of the victim who drowned in Indian creek on Saturday, according to Kansas Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.

The body surfaced just before 4;00 p.m. and was observed by an individual fishing in the creek. The KCFD and police were notified and responded. The body was recovered and turned over to the medical examiner. He was found within the original search area.&nbsp; The name of the victim has not been released.

Just before 7p.m. Saturday, Kansas City Fire Department rescue crews were dispatched to reports of a possible drowning in Indian Creek, near 103rd Street and State Line Road, according to Battalion Chief Riley Nolan.

On arrival, companies surveyed the scene, interviewed a witness, walked the banks, and set up on bridges above the creek for better viewpoints.&nbsp;

KCFD Rescue Companies began conducting a search in the creek, with "swimmers" and launched their Inflatable Rubber Boat (IRB). The KCFD Drone was deployed, along with a Human Remains Detection (HRD) dog , and the Missouri Highway Patrol to assist in the search efforts. ------

After no rescue or recovery at 11:54 p.m., the decision was made to resume the search on Sunday.&nbsp;

The KCFD Drone was deployed, along with a Human Remains Detection (HRD) dog , and the Missouri Highway Patrol to assist in the search efforts. ------</p><p>After no rescue or recovery at 11:54 p.m., the decision was made to resume the search on Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

The indictment alleges that between Feb. 6, 2024, and May 15, 2024, Cannon robbed, or attempted to rob, six different banks and credit unions across Kansas City, acquiring over $30,000 in the process.

Under federal statutes, each count of bank robbery, or attempted bank robbery, carries a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment in federal prison without parole.&nbsp; The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

Suspect accused in string of bank robberies across KC metro

ELLIS COUNTY —Juan Olivares Herrera, 22, is back in the Ellis County Jail in Hays&nbsp;after escaping custody Saturday night, according Ellis County Sheriff Scott Braun. Herrerra was taken into custody Sunday afternoon without incident.

Herrera escaped from deputies while being transported from Hays Medical Center and was seen running south on 22nd Street and Canterbury. Herrera was being held on requested charges of domestic battery, aggravated robbery and disorderly conduct.

&nbsp;Law enforcement described Herrera as a&nbsp; Hispanic male with brown hair and brown eyes. He is approximately 5-feet-8 inches tall and weighs 100 pounds.

He also has a large black and grey watercolor-type tattoo on his left shoulder/chest, last known to have a mustache/goatee. He has a distinct leg injury and was last known to be wearing jail oranges and handcuffs.

IBR is not affected by a federal court’s injunction blocking former&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/student-loans-debt-cancellation-forgiveness-d213afe3ea69da3c6b9e713c7dc16a9a">President Joe Biden’s</a>&nbsp;Saving on a Valuable Education, or SAVE, plan. The IBR plan was created by Congress separately from other existing repayment plans, including those known as PAYE and ICR. It’s also exempt from some changes coming from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/student-loan-forgiveness-public-service-trump-145f6a07a477e5c82f4374bc89e1eea7">President Donald Trump’s</a>&nbsp;tax and spending bill.
