FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Brian Schottenheimer carried a card in his wallet when he was still in college, inscribed with his goal at the time.

Become the youngest head coach in the NFL.

Didn’t quite work out that way for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/marty-schottenheimer-dead-1970bcb9df70f8efa02f62dcc0f1ae2f">son of the late coach Marty Schottenheimer</a>, in part because he said it wasn’t too many years later when the younger Schottenheimer thought maybe he wasn’t ready.

The 51-year-old Schottenheimer says he is now, and the Dallas Cowboys promoted him from offensive coordinator to be the 10th coach in the storied franchise’s history.

“I thought for a while it might not happen, but it’s been a lifelong dream,” Schottenheimer said at his introductory news conference Monday, with his family and Marty Schottenheimer’s widow, Pat, watching along with franchise quarterback Dak Prescott and several teammates.

“That notecard was in my wallet at an early age, and it’s been a long time coming, but it’s here,” the younger Schottenheimer said.

He was quick to address the skeptics who questioned the hiring of a coach considered a career assistant, a suggestion even dropped by owner Jerry Jones when he announced the decision last week.

Schottenheimer broached the touchy subject even before taking a moment to recognize his father, who was 200-126-1 in 21 seasons as a head coach with stops in Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington and San Diego. The elder Schottenheimer died four years ago at age 77.

“I’ve had some opportunities when I was a much younger man, that I didn’t feel like I was ready,” Brian Schottenheimer said. “I’m ready now. I know what I want. I know what it looks like.”

The Cowboys promoted him less than two weeks after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cowboys-mccarthy-533c8098fe87060e341a75368dea254e">parting ways with Mike McCarthy</a>, who brought Schottenheimer in as a consultant in 2022 and was on an expiring contract after a 7-10 season. Schottenheimer was the offensive coordinator the past two seasons with McCarthy calling plays.

The Dallas front office was in discussions to keep McCarthy before both sides decided to move on. Executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones said Schottenheimer would have left the staff had McCarthy stayed because he wanted to pursue play-calling opportunities.

Talk of Schottenheimer staying and calling plays morphed into conversations about him being head coach. He plans to call plays, too.

Schottenheimer was an assistant with the St. Louis Rams, Kansas City, Washington, the San Diego Chargers and Jacksonville along with three one-year stops in college. His 14 years as an offensive coordinator include six with the Jets, three with the Rams and Seahawks and two with the Cowboys.

“How often do you have someone that has 25 ... years of working through the human relationship and working, aspiring to learn or have his ears and eyes wide open and looking for techniques and looking for things that make coaches better,” Jerry Jones said. “He’s had 25 years being around the kinds of things that he’s going to have to draw on to be a coach of the Dallas Cowboys.”

Schottenheimer said his first chance to consider head coaching came during his first stint as an NFL play-caller, from 2006-11 with the New York Jets.

He said he had “pause,” and a three-year run as Pete Carroll’s offensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks almost a decade later played a big role in him believing he could be a head coach, in part from the challenges Carroll presented him.

Jones spent more than 10 minutes answering the first question of the news conference, defending the hire and bristling over the suggestion that it was a conversative move by picking a coach on the existing staff.

“Without this thing being about me in any way, if you don’t think I can’t operate out of my comfort zone, you’re so wrong,” Jones said. “It’s unbelievable. This is as big a risk as you can take, as big a risk as you could take. No head coaching experience.”

Schottenheimer is the 10th coach in franchise history, and the ninth hired by Jones since be bought the team in 1989 and fired the only coach from Dallas’ first 29 seasons, Pro Football Hall of Famer Tom Landry.

It’s the seventh coach since the last time the Cowboys reached an NFC championship game, on the way to their fifth Super Bowl title in 1995. It’s the longest drought in the NFC without reaching the conference title game.

The Cowboys went to the playoffs three consecutive years with 12-5 records under McCarthy but were 1-3 in the postseason. Asked how things would be different, Schottenheimer spoke extensively about building relationships.

“This business has never been about X’s and O’s,” Schottenheimer said. “It’s about people.”

And the Cowboys believe they found the right person, even if McCarthy was the one who brought him here. McCarthy’s NFL coaching career started under Marty Schottenheimer in 1993.

“Would he do things different, is he going to do things different than Mike? Absolutely,” Stephen Jones said. “I think we’ve got a great plan on defense. I think we’ve got a great plan on special teams. We’re putting that all together. That has to come together as a staff, and certainly Schotty leads that.”

Perhaps the biggest thing working Schottenheimer’s favor was the relationship he built the past two years with Prescott, who is about to start the $260 million, four-year contract he signed in 2024. It’s the first NFL contract with an average annual value of $60 million.

“Dak’s not making any coaching decisions, nor does he want to,” Stephen Jones said. “But, I can tell you, every team who made a coaching decision was looking at how they solve for their quarterback. That’s how you win in this league.”

Schottenheimer says he’s ‘ready’ to coach Cowboys after long career as assistant

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs are headed back to the Super Bowl, trying to become the first team in NFL history to win it three consecutive times, and one of the biggest reasons why is that they have something John Wayne and Jeff Bridges have had over the years.

No matter the circumstances — the odds, the deficits, the injuries that seem insurmountable — the Chiefs always find a way in the end. That was the case again Sunday night, when Patrick Mahomes led them to the go-ahead field goal and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bills-chiefs-josh-allen-sean-mcdermott-a8efc2f6ffcac9b8f42a334ab268f503">the Kansas City defense stopped Josh Allen</a>&nbsp;and the Buffalo Bills late to preserve&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/buffalo-bills-kansas-city-chiefs-afc-championship-score-c9187ccf15160bd5eabba73086ee9a42">a 32-29 victory in the AFC title game</a>.

“I think the guys kind of thrive on that,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday. “When given the opportunity, they've stepped up in those situations, and as a coach you love that part. And you know that's a rare thing. These games could have gone either way, no different than last night, and guys, they take so much pride in stepping up, and they don't shrink in those situations.”

The Chiefs have won an NFL-record 17 straight one-possession games dating to a 20-14 loss to the Raiders on Christmas Day in 2023. In so many of them, Mahomes and the Chiefs had to rally in the second half, including the victory over Buffalo, where Kansas City found itself trailing 22-21 in the third quarter but managed to pull ahead on Mahomes' TD run in the fourth.

They held on from there, becoming the first back-to-back Super Bowl champion to win their ensuing conference title game.

Now, they get to face the Eagles on Feb. 9 in New Orleans in a rematch of the first Super Bowl of their current run.

“We had six or seven games (this season) where it was one possession. We continued to build off,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said. "These games are very familiar to us. We’re used to being in these types of situations. We feel very calm, we feel very at peace with what we’re running — the speed of it, the pace of it and the playcalling.”

Need more proof? Go back to the start of the 2019 postseason, when the Chiefs were headed toward their first Super Bowl title in five decades. Eleven times in the playoffs, they've trailed by a score in the fourth quarter or overtime, and they've been able to produce seven touchdowns and four game-tying field goals in those stress-inducing situations.

“It takes everybody,” Mahomes said Sunday night, “and we've done it so many different ways now that we just have full trust. The coaches have trust in the players and the players trust in the coaches, and we go out there and execute our job. When you've done it over and over again, it becomes habit. And obviously, we'd want to win by more, but I think the regular season — winning all those close games — has prepared us for moments like today.”

After they were nearly shut out by Houston in the divisional round, Chiefs wide receivers had 12 catches for 191 yards and a TD against the Bills. That included six catches and 85 yards from first-round draft pick Xavier Worthy.

The Chiefs didn’t force any turnovers against the Bills. They may need to produce a couple against the Eagles to win the Super Bowl.

Kareem Hunt has solidified his spot ahead of Isiah Pacheco in the running back pecking order, running 17 times for 64 yards and a score against the Bills. Many of those yards came between the tackles when Kansas City needed it most.

Chiefs safety Bryan Cook has struggled in coverage much of the year. That was the case again on Sunday.

The Chiefs are headed into two weeks of Super Bowl preparations without any significant injuries.

7 — The Chiefs are headed to their fifth Super Bowl in seven years and seventh overall. The only teams to reach more are the Patriots, who went to 11, and the Cowboys, Broncos, Steelers and 49ers, who have been to eight apiece.

The Chiefs will install most of the game plan this week before departing for New Orleans, where they will put the final touches on it in the week leading up to the big game. Kansas City is a 1 1/2-point favorite, according to BetMGM Sportsbook.

The women's squad of the Barton Community College track and field program led the highlights Saturday competing at the NAIA/JUCO Challenge held at Pittsburg State University's Robert W. Plaster Center.

Winning three of the events, the women scored 97 points for a 6.5 point victory against athletes from various NAIA and junior college competitors while the men placed 5th on two winning events in an equally highly competitive field of thirty different schools.

Overall the program added seven new national qualifiers within their 35 personal or season bests efforts, two of those making impacts on the storied Barton women's Top-10 record book.

For the second consecutive meet&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/williams_cedricka_nubb">Cedricka Williams</a>&nbsp;achieved a personal best weight throw, this time marking a near two-foot improvement of 17.41m (57-1.50) to move two slots up into the 7th position of Barton's all-time best performances.

Fellow sophomore&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/walters_shone_denw">Shone Walters</a>&nbsp;is also off to a great start to the indoor season, slicing nearly four seconds off last week's time in clocking a 2:12.85 to slide into the 10th position all-time.

Both were previously nationally qualified in the events and finished second overall on Saturday.

Also previously qualified but winning their events on Saturday were a pair of freshmen,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/ulett_asharria_pehi">Asharria Ulett</a>&nbsp;winning her second consecutive 60m hurdle event clocking the nation's second fastest time of 8.54 in missing the program's top ten by .02 seconds, and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/riddle_celine_7d6i">Celine Riddle</a>&nbsp;marking also a nation's second best mark with a long jump distance of 5.74m (18-10).

The women's other victory came in the 4x400m relay, the tandem of Walters,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/fox_natasha_vrk7">Natasha Fox</a>,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/smith_keliza_n0oy">Keliza Smith</a>, and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/mcpherson_narissa_mdc1">Narissa McPherson</a>&nbsp;passing the baton in a nation's leading 3:46.84 clock stoppage.

On the men's side both event winners came in the field events,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/hayles_ricardo_kdl2">Ricardo Hayles</a>&nbsp;improving his shot put qualifying mark to a nation's fourth best 16.99m (55-9.00) to distance the field by over two feet.

Reigning NJCAA Men's Athlete of the Week&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/hamer_trevon_pxan">Trevon Hamer</a>&nbsp;traded the triple for the long jump this weekend adding his second qualifying event, chalking up another event win by marking a nation's current third best distance on a personal record 7.53m (24-8.50).

Following their two in-state meets to open the season, the Cougars will next head to Lubbock, Texas for the two-day Stan Scott Invite &amp; Multis hosted by Texas Tech University.

Plaster Center.Winning three of the events, the women scored 97 points for a 6.5 point victory against athletes from various NAIA and junior college competitors while the men placed 5th on two winning events in an equally highly competitive field of thirty different schools.Overall the program added seven new national qualifiers within their 35 personal or season bests efforts, two of those making impacts on the storied Barton women's Top-10 record book.For the second consecutive meet&nbsp;<a target="_blank" Barton track and field add seven new qualifiers, women win NAIA/JUCO Challenge

Another Kansas City Chiefs playoff win. Another game where officiating steals some of the spotlight.

Patrick Mahomes rallied Kansas City to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/buffalo-bills-kansas-city-chiefs-afc-championship-score-c9187ccf15160bd5eabba73086ee9a42">32-29 victory</a>&nbsp;over Josh Allen and the Bills in the AFC championship game on Sunday, sending the Chiefs back to the Super Bowl for the fifth time in six years with a chance to become the first team to threepeat.

But much of the talk centered on two more calls that went Kansas City’s way.

In the first half, Xavier Worthy was credited with a catch when he wrestled the ball away from Bills safety Cole Bishop for a 26-yard gain to Buffalo’s 3. The ball appeared to hit the ground and the CBS broadcast crew was confused about the ruling.

“I can see it cause you can’t completely say no, but that ball hits (the ground),” analyst Tony Romo said.

CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore also didn’t think it was a catch.

The Bills challenged but the play was upheld and Mahomes then ran in for a score and a 21-10 lead.

Buffalo rallied to take a 22-21 lead and faced a fourth-and-1 at Kansas City’s 41 early in the fourth quarter.

Allen was stopped on a sneak even though it appeared one official marked the ball past the line of gain before another placed it short. Replay review upheld the call because there wasn’t clear evidence to overturn it. The league had a full crew of replay experts on staff in New York to make the decision.

“I felt like he gained it by about a third of the football,” Steratore said on the broadcast. “That was just my take on the play. Tough, tough play.”

But the Chiefs took over and drove for a go-ahead touchdown.

The NFL has experimented with new technology to measure line to gain that could eventually replace the chain gang, who use two bright orange sticks and a chain to measure for first downs.

Determining ball placement through technology is another story. It requires digital components inside a football and it’s unknown how accurate it would be when bodies are piled up.

Last week, Kansas City benefited from two roughing-the-passer penalties during a 23-14 victory over Houston.

Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, who was calling the game with Joe Buck on ESPN, was appalled after one of them.

“Oh, come on! I mean, he’s a runner. I could not disagree with that one more. He barely gets hit.” Aikman said on the broadcast. “They’ve gotta address it in the offseason.”

ESPN rules analyst Russell Yurk agreed, pointing out that two Texans collided with each other.

There’s a perception among non-Chiefs fans and some media that officials favor the two-time defending Super Bowl champions.

A stat researched by ESPN’s Paul Hembekides and&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/1883521803521556693" target="_blank">posted on X</a>&nbsp;by colleague Adam Schefter, who has 11.4 million followers, pointed out there have been six roughing-the-passer penalties called on Mahomes during Kansas City’s eight-game playoff winning streak — now at nine — and none called against the Chiefs. Also, Kansas City’s opponents were called for four unnecessary roughness penalties to one against the Chiefs in that span.

That led former All-Pro right tackle Mitchell Schwartz, who played for Kansas City’s 2019 championship team, to lash out.

“It’s insane that someone in the league is pushing this, and/or allowing the most visible person (Schefter) to spew this kind of (nonsense),” Schwartz wrote on X. “Maybe the Chiefs are better coached and don’t hit QBs late or in the head/neck. Back in my day teams who got less penalties called were considered better coached. Insane.”

When Tom Brady and the New England Patriots were winning six Super Bowls, people complained they received better treatment from the officials.

Now, it’s Mahomes and the Chiefs who are supposedly getting the favoritism. The presence of Taylor Swift supporting boyfriend Travis Kelce only fuels the conspiracy theorists.

Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles could end the whining by defeating the Chiefs in the Super Bowl on Feb. 9.

Chiefs have 2 more calls go their way in another playoff win

The competition is always fierce at the Bob Kuhn Prairie Classic in Hays. Second-ranked Manhattan (6A) took this year's team trophy Saturday with 245.5 points, followed by No. 3 Phillipsburg (3-2-1A) with 136 points. No. 5 Russell (3-2-1A) scored 117.5 points for third, and Great Bend placed fourth with 111 points.

Russell freshman Xzander Donner, ranked No. 3, went 3-0 at 106 pounds to win that bracket. He won a major against Hays sophomore Cyler Luck in the finals. Great Bend's Abel Spencer was tech-falled by Luck in the quarterfinals. Spencer won his next two matches before losing in the consolation semifinals to a Colorado wrestler. Spencer lost a major to Hays' other wrestler in the fifth-place match.

Panther senior Jace Schartz, ranked No. 3, made it to the finals at 165 pounds. He inched closer to the state tech-fall record, then won an 11-7 decision against Russell senior Teagen Pfeifer, ranked No. 4. Schartz was pinned by a Colorado wrestler in the finals. Pfeifer pinned Buhler's fourth-ranked Luke Kerns (4A) in the consolation finals. 

Panther junior Trenton Kern, ranked No. 6, had one of the most impressive wins on the day. Kern pinned his first opponent in 43 seconds, then pinned third-ranked Lucas Freeman of Goddard-Eisenhower in 49 seconds to reach the finals. Third-ranked Landon Dobson of Manhattan saw even less mat time in the other half of the bracket. He pinned Kern in the finals. 

Great Bend junior Triston Tomlinson, ranked No. 6, advanced to the finals at 138 pounds. Tomlinson pinned his first opponent and won an 11-5 decision against Hugoton to reach the semifinals. There, he edged sixth-ranked Hunter Sisson of Phillipsburg 4-2. Top-ranked Carter Krier of Oakley (3-2-1A) was able to pin Tomlinson early in the second period of the finals.

Area wrestlers took two of the top-three spots at 113 pounds. Russell junior Xzephren Donner, ranked No. 2, made it to the finals where he lost in sudden-victory to fourth-ranked Jack Hutchinson on Manhattan. Great Bend freshman Cal Schartz, ranked No. 5, had a tough open with a loss to Hutchinson. He rebounded to win a pair of tech falls and a major on the back side to finish third.

The 175-pound bracket featured another premium finale. Russell senior Brayden Suchy, ranked No. 3, tech-falled his first opponent and won a 12-7 decision of Ellsworth's Micah Galvan. In the finals, Suchy was tech-falled by Manhattan's second-ranked sophomore Max Evans-Pryor. Galvan went on to finish fourth for Ellsworth.

Great Bend's Hayden Kelly, ranked fifth, pulled out a third-place finish at 150 pounds. He pinned his first opponent and tech-falled fifth-ranked Dayton Fromholtz of St. Francis (3-2-1A) to reach the semifinals. Kelly went the distance in a 7-0 loss to fourth-ranked Logan Lagrman of Manhattan, who won the bracket. On the back side, Kelly pinned his Trego opponent and defeated Fromholtz 10-3 in the consolation finals.

Hayden Liles placed eighth for Great Bend at 132 pounds. He pinned his first opponent before getting pinned by No. 6 Kaden Sisson of Phillipsburg, who made the finals where he was pinned by top-ranked Caeleb Hutchinson of Manhattan. Liles won a 3-1 decision against Hays, lost a 6-0 decision to Santa Fe Trail, and lost a 12-4 major to the Huguton wrestler he pinned in round one.

Russell senior Ethan Koetkemeyer finished third at 157 pounds with a pin against Kapaun in the consolation finals. Great Bend's Josue Bustamonte finished sixth at 285 pounds. 

Panther senior Ambrose Kramer had a tough draw at 120 pounds. After a bye, he was pinned by the eventual runner-up from Santa Fe Trail. Kramer was also pinned by the seventh-place finisher from Kapaun.

3 injured by car driven into a crowd in Philadelphia after Eagles playoff game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 245 yards and a touchdown, ran through the Buffalo defense for two more scores, and relied on his defense at key moments to help the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Bills 32-29 on Sunday night and reach the Super Bowl for the third consecutive season.

Now, the AFC champions will try to do something no other NFL team has done: Win all three.

The Chiefs will get a familiar foe in the Eagles, whom they beat two years ago for the first title in this run. Philadelphia romped to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/commanders-eagles-score-b4f7c398625075b73f74bfe3531662e4">a 55-23 victory</a>&nbsp;over the Washington Commanders earlier Sunday to earn a shot at the champs on Feb. 9 in New Orleans.

It's the fourth time since January 2021 that the Chiefs have ended the Bills' season in the playoffs. And like all the rest, it came after a heavyweight fight between two of the top teams in the AFC, one that was tied 29-all after Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1883703300098511105">found Curtis Samuel</a>&nbsp;in the back of the end zone to set up a little more drama at Arrowhead Stadium.

Mahomes was simply unflappable, though. He completed four consecutive passes on the ensuing possession, setting up&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1883705691783016624">Harrison Butker's go-ahead field goal</a>&nbsp;with 3:33 left and putting the Bills in another do-or-die situation in Kansas City.

Allen got their drive going by running for a first down, but his next two throws were batted at the line of scrimmage and fell incomplete. He hit Amari Cooper for a short gain on third down, and the Bills chose to go for it — they were 4 of 5 on fourth down at that point — and the Kansas City blitz forced Allen to loft up a prayer that Dalton Kincaid could not catch.

The Chiefs took over, picked up a couple of first downs and began to celebrate once again.

Kareem Hunt had a touchdown run and Xavier Worthy had six catches for 85 yards and a score for Kansas City, which became the fourth franchise to reach three consecutive Super Bowls with its ninth consecutive playoff victory.

Allen threw for 237 yards and two scores for Buffalo. James Cook ran for 85 yards and two touchdowns of his own.

The Bills still have not been to the Super Bowl since a run of four straight during the 1990-93 seasons.

The Bills and Chiefs have become well acquainted over the years, meeting seven times since Kansas City beat Buffalo under the exact same circumstances — the AFC title game at Arrowhead Stadium — to reach the Super Bowl in January 2021.

Buffalo had won all four games in the regular season. Kansas City had won the three that mattered in the postseason.

And that familiarity, along with the fact that Bills coach Sean McDermott once worked for Chiefs counterpart Andy Reid, was evident as the game transpired. The Bills simply refused to let Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce beat them, like he did against the Texans in the divisional round, while Kansas City was prepared for Allen's propensity to take off and run.

It was the Chiefs who took a 21-16 lead into the locker room after a topsy-turvy first half.

Mahomes and Hunt ran for scores and Worthy had a touchdown reception as the teams traded the lead. Cook reached the end zone for Buffalo, and a spectacular touchdown catch by Mack Hollins just before halftime kept the Bills in the game.

It remained a game of inches in the second half: Cook barely reached across the goal line for a touchdown, the Chiefs stopped Allen inches shy of the marker on fourth down, Mahomes bulldozed into the end zone for a score, and the Bills answered with a 70-yard drive in which their MVP-candidate quarterback hit Samuel on fourth-and-goal to tie the game at 29-all.

Fifty-three minutes and 45 seconds had been rendered moot. Everything came down to the last 6:45 of the game.

Bills cornerback Christian Benford was carted off in the first quarter and declared out with a concussion. He had spent the week in the concussion protocol before getting cleared to play Sunday.

The Chiefs are headed to the Big Easy to face the Eagles in the Super Bowl for the second time in three years. In the first game, they rallied from a 24-14 halftime deficit with Butker hitting a 27-yard field goal for the 38-35 win.

Ilia Malinin laid in the middle of the ice at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Sunday as everyone else stood in ovation.

In another stunning display of athleticism, the reigning world champion landed six of his seven planned quad jumps — including the quad axel, the jump that only Malinin has ever landed in competition — and finished with 333.31 points after his free skate to win his third consecutive national championship at INTRUST Bank Arena in Wichita, Kansas.

Andrew Torgashev landed a pair of quads during his free skate and finished second with 286.49 points, while Camden Pulkinen took advantage of a sloppy free skate from Jimmy Ma to secure the bronze medal with 252.92 points.

Malinin was trying to become the first skater ever to land seven clean quads in competition, and he came close. He opened with the quad flip, easily landed his quad axel and hit his quad lutz — the second-hardest of the quads. But then came his only miscue, when Malinin fell on his quad loop, and he punched the air in mid-routine as if he was miffed at himself.

He landed three more quads, all of them leading into other jumps, and finished it all off with a crowd-pleasing backflip.

“It wasn't the perfect program that I exactly wanted, but I think I gave a good, solid start for what is working in this program,” said Malinin, who was using nationals as a dress rehearsal for the upcoming world championships in Boston.

If it had been international competition, Malinin's score would have nearly matched Nathan Chen's record of 335.30 points.

“I'm still not at my full potential yet and there's a lot bigger limit, I guess, that I can go for,” Malinin said.

Malinin went into the free skate with a record margin for nationals — 19.14 points over anyone else in the field — after a sublime short program Saturday that was even a bit tame by his standards. The self-proclaimed “Quad God” landed a quad flip and a quad lutz-triple toe loop combination but chose to skip over his quad axel for a triple axel instead.

Malinin was philosophical about it afterward, saying, “There's the pressure of trying to do (the quad axel) at every competition. People might want to see something bigger and better, but I want to make sure I am consistent.”

The 20-year-old from Fairfax, Virginia, has won eight consecutive competitions since a second-place finish at the Grand Prix de France last year. That stretch of podium perfection included his second national title, two victories at the prestigious Grand Prix Final, and a world championship that Malinin will attempt to defend on home soil in March.

It's a run that prompted Ma to vault Malinin into the same category of greatness as Chen, the retired Olympic champion.

“I don’t even think of Ilia as competition anymore because it’s not something I think I can achieve,” Ma said. “It’s just an honor to be friends and compete with two people who can be considered GOATs in their own way.”

The 23-year-old Torgashev, who was third at the Grand Prix de France, was so pumped about his performance to the symphonic suite “Scheherazade” that earned him a silver medal that he said stepping off the ice Sunday, “I ... crushed it.”

Pulkinen rounded out the podium with a second consecutive bronze medal at nationals.

World champ lands 6 quad jumps, cruises to US Figure Skating title in Wichita

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/moss_brent_th5a">Brent Moss</a>&nbsp;of the Barton Community College men's basketball team has been named both the KJCCC and NJCAA Week 10 Player of the Week.

Moss' second straight and third conference award of the season grabbed national attention this week after averaging a double-double 28.5 points on 68.7% shooting and 12 rebounds in Barton's pair of contest.

The sophomore from Freeport, Bahamas, began the week with a monster performance of 40 points and 20 rebounds in an overtime loss to Independence, both numbers falling just shy of program Top-10 single game achievements.

Drawing heavy attention three days later hosting Coffeyville Community College, Moss finished with a team high 17 points adding four rebounds, to go along with, two assists and two blocks to help Barton take down the then-12th ranked Red Ravens.

Most recently on Wednesday, Moss added his 8th double-double of the season continuing his torrid stretch with 18 points and 14 rebounds, half the boards coming on the offensive glass, in registering his 15th straight game reaching double-figure scoring and 9th time grabbing ten or more rebounds.

The effort helped Barton knock off its second straight ranked opponent, taking down No. 23 Hutchinson Community College by five for the Cougars 8th straight win of the series and 13th straight at the Sports Arena.

Moss' third honor of the season comes on the back-to-back nods from the conference committee, his first coming in week three, and gives Barton its third straight following&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/parlow-_jr._james_9gp2">James Parlow, Jr.</a>'s week eight distinction.

Bouncing back from its loss to Independence leading to the Cougars' twenty-three week streak of being nationally ranked, Barton looks to continue its newfound resurgence in the upset victories into its upcoming two-game homestand, the first coming in Saturday's 4:00 p.m. tip against Garden City Community College followed by Wednesday's 7:30 p.m. contest hosting Cloud County Community College.

 </figure>By TODD MOORE Barton Sports Info<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/moss_brent_th5a">Brent Moss</a>&nbsp;of the Barton Community College men's basketball team has been named both the KJCCC and NJCAA Week 10 Player of the Week.Moss' second straight and third conference award of the season grabbed national attention this week after averaging a double-double 28.5 points on 68.7% shooting and 12 rebounds in Barton's pair of contest.The sophomore from Freeport, Bahamas, began the week with a monster performance of 40 points and 20 rebounds in an overtime loss to Independence, both numbers falling just shy of program Top-10 single game achievements.Drawing heavy attention three days later hosting Coffeyville Community College, Moss finished with a team high 17 points adding four rebounds, to go along with, two assists and two blocks to help Barton take down the then-12th ranked Red Ravens.Most recently on Wednesday, Moss added his 8th double-double of the season continuing his torrid stretch with 18 points and 14 rebounds, half the boards coming on the offensive glass, in registering his 15th straight game reaching double-figure scoring and 9th time grabbing ten or more rebounds.The effort helped Barton knock off its second straight ranked opponent, taking down No. 23 Hutchinson Community College by five for the Cougars 8th straight win of the series and 13th straight at the Sports Arena.Moss' third honor of the season comes on the back-to-back nods from the conference committee, his first coming in week three, and gives Barton its third straight following&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/parlow-_jr._james_9gp2">James Parlow, Jr.</a>'s week eight distinction.Bouncing back from its loss to Independence leading to the Cougars' twenty-three week streak of being nationally ranked, Barton looks to continue its newfound resurgence in the upset victories into its upcoming two-game homestand, the first coming in Saturday's 4:00 p.m. tip against Garden City Community College followed by Wednesday's 7:30 p.m. contest hosting Cloud County Community College.

Barton's Moss' third charm garners NJCAA Player of the Week honor

Hamer's performances both resulted in program record book impacts as the Kansas State University signee enjoyed his future home indoor arena by setting the facility's triple jump record at 15.98m (52-05.25) for a Barton 6th best all-time mark.

The defending NJCAA Indoor Triple Jump Champion and USTFCCCA Field Scholar of the Year, Hamer would also take his talent to the short track sprint leading Barton's 1-2-3 finish in 60m national qualifying times by clocking a program 9th fastest time of 6.68 with fellow sophomore&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/belle_wanyae_s05x">Wanyae Belle</a>'s personal best 6.74 placing runner-up edging out freshman&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/straker_aragorn_chr4">Aragorn Straker</a>'s 6.75.

Native of Georgetown, Guyana, Hamer and the rest of the Cougar program remain in-state for its next competition heading to Pittsburg on Saturday for the NAIA/JUCO Challenge at Pittsburg State University's Plaster Center.

Barton’s Hamer season debut produces National Track and Field Athlete of the Week award

HAYS, Kan. – Curtis Hammeke, Fort Hays State University Director of Athletics, announced he will retire from his position effective in June of 2025. Hammeke will complete 21 years of service in his role at Fort Hays State at the end of the 2024-25 academic year. He has had a major impact on Fort Hays State's continued athletic success at the NCAA Division II level, while also making a tremendous impact on the community of Hays in his time as an administrator, coach, and student-athlete at FHSU.

A native of Great Bend, Kansas, Hammeke has spent nearly three decades at Fort Hays State University. His time began as a baseball student-athlete in the mid-1980s followed by five years as head coach of the Tiger baseball team from 1991-1996. He is currently in his 21st year of service as Director of Athletics for the Tigers, running from 2004-2025. He received his bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University in Physical Education in 1985 and then completed his master's degree in Athletic Administration in 1993.

"Having spent the vast majority of my adult life engaged with this university, I'm thankful for the many opportunities I've been given as a student-athlete, baseball coach, and as director of athletics. I will always be grateful for the relationships developed through the years, and the people I've worked alongside both internally and externally," said Hammeke.

In Hammeke's time as Director of Athletics, Fort Hays State has enjoyed a total of 22 team conference titles in all sports combined since 2004. Numerous individual conference titles were also won on his watch. Hammeke was instrumental in FHSU's transition from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 2006 to its current affiliation with the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), one of the most competitive NCAA Division II conferences nationally. Twenty of the 22 conference titles under Hammeke have been during the Tigers' membership with the MIAA. Current head coaches Chris Brown (football), Mark Johnson (men's basketball), Adrian Pilkington (softball), and Brian Flax (women's tennis), along with former head coaches Tony Hobson (women's basketball), Brett Parker (men's soccer), Craig Shaw (women's soccer), and Chas Thompson (men's wrestling) all set new records for wins at FHSU in their respective sports under Hammeke's guidance.

Fort Hays State served as host of several NCAA postseason events during Hammeke's 21 years of service, several based on the success of Fort Hays State's teams. FHSU was host of the NCAA Central Regional in women's basketball three times after the team earned the No. 1 seed (2015, 2019, 2022). Football hosted an NCAA playoff game in 2017 as the super region's No. 1 seed following an undefeated regular season. Softball also hosted an NCAA regional in 2013 as the No. 1 seed. FHSU was also selected as a regional host in men's wrestling and cross country within the last 21 years.

Fort Hays State Athletics has seen numerous facility upgrades over the past couple of decades thanks to Hammeke's guidance and the generous contributions and donations from the Tiger community. FHSU Soccer Stadium (2011), Schmidt-Bickle Indoor Training Facility (2013), FHSU Track and Field Facility (2016), and the ongoing construction of the Bickle-Schmidt Athletic Complex (projected for late 2025) highlight the new facilities built for Tiger Athletics during his time at the helm. He also orchestrated numerous upgrades to existing facilities, including Lewis Field Stadium, Gross Memorial Coliseum, Larks Park, Fleharty Family Field, and FHSU Tennis Courts. Several of the upgrades include chairback seating for fans, replacement of playing surfaces, videoboards and scoreboards, locker rooms, lighting, fencing, study space for student-athletes, and various other improvements to current infrastructure.

Hammeke has made a huge impact by making a strong connection with members of the Tiger community and working with several individuals who have made generous donations and contributions to FHSU Athletics. He created the existing Difference Makers group for FHSU Athletics, a group of families and individuals who have made major contributions to help fund major upgrades and improvements at FHSU. He was also instrumental in creating the annual Tiger Auction and Dinner, a highly-popular fundraising event among Tiger supporters held each summer. The Tiger Auction and Dinner, currently organized by Assistant Athletic Director Matt Cook, celebrated its 15th year in 2024.

Fort Hays State Athletics has also seen the addition of three new sports during Hammeke's post, which included men's and women's soccer in 2011 and women's wrestling in 2023, going from 16 to 19 intercollegiate sports overall. With the additional sports, Fort Hays State now has over 500 student-athletes competing annually at the NCAA Division II level.

Hammeke has built and provided strong stability for FHSU Athletics in his time at the helm. Five of the current members of the Athletic Administration Staff have served in their roles for at least 11 years, including one spanning two decades. The sports of football, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's wrestling, softball, tennis, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track and field, and women's golf have all seen tenures of head coaches last more than a decade under Hammeke's guidance. Five of those head coaches are still in their positions today and three of the five have coached at least 20 years at FHSU.

"It is with a profound sense of gratitude and admiration that I recognize Curtis Hammeke's exceptional contributions as our Director of Athletics," said President of Fort Hays State University Dr. Tisa Mason. Hammeke has enjoyed a lifetime of contributions to collegiate athletics in the state of Kansas. Following his graduation from FHSU in 1985, he served as Assistant Baseball Coach and Sports Information Director at Barton (Kan.) Community College from 1987 to 1991. Barton is where his journey as a collegiate student-athlete and administrator began in the early 1980s, surrounding his two years as a student-athlete at Fort Hays State University. Following his five years as head baseball coach at FHSU, Hammeke was Director of Athletics at Great Bend High School for two years and then took his first collegiate Director of Athletics position at Butler (Kan.) Community College from 1998 to 2003. Butler won a pair of football national championships at the junior college level on Hammeke's watch. He spent one year as Director of Athletics at Newman University in 2003-04 before returning to Hays to serve the last 21 years in his current role. In 2017, Hammeke was inducted into the Barton Community College Sports Hall of Fame for his time as both a player and coach at the institution.

Curtis and his wife Annette are blessed with three children, Father Andy Hammeke and Alicia Knight currently residing in Hays, and Nick Hammeke currently residing in Kansas City. All three were student-athletes and graduates of Fort Hays State University and have enjoyed great success in their lives beyond FHSU. Alicia and husband Kegan have four children – Emery, Kollins, Kolter, and Turner, while Nick and wife Olivia have one son – Jack.

"It is with a great sense of gratitude that I reflect on the last 30 years," Hammeke said. "The two cornerstones of my career have been the ongoing growth of my Catholic faith and the supportive presence of my wife Annette. We've been extremely blessed with our children, their spouses, and our grandchildren. Words can't describe what they all mean to us. Beyond faith and family, it is Fort Hays State University that I'm most grateful for. There's a certain degree of apprehension, along with excitement, which coincide with not knowing exactly what the next chapter of our lives will encompass. But regardless, I will cherish forever my time spent here with all the amazing people who work tirelessly on a mission to 'Defend the Fort.'"

Hammeke Announces Retirement from Director of Athletics

Progress is success. The Panther swimmers finished ninth out of 10 teams Thursday at Campus. They also swam personal best times in 20 of their 24 races that day. Campus scored 471 points for the win, followed by Maize South with 400 points and Maize with 379 points. Great Bend scored 45 points to miss eighth place by two points. Campus and Maize South each had divers.

The 200 medley relay team of Mark Sperlein, Matthew Williams, Kale Mermis, and Logan Urban finished 14th in 2:20.30, eight seconds from a top-10 finish.

Sperlein made the top 10 in the 100 fly in 1:18.58 to miss the bronze by 15 seconds. He swam 13th in the 200 IM in 2:49.22, five seconds off a top-10 finish. Mermis finished two spots behind him in 2:59.52. Urban placed 18th in the 50 free in 30.74, three seconds off a top-10 spot. Cade Urban hit the wall in 32.53 for 22nd. Williams finished 22nd in the 200 free in 2:35.04 to miss the top 10 by 13 seconds. Leo Bashor placed 31st in 3:06.53.&nbsp;
