SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Mike Moustakas is going to retire with Kansas City after spending 13 years in the majors and winning the World Series with the Royals in 2015.

The Royals announced Moustakas' retirement on Monday. The 36-year-old infielder will sign a one-day contract with his first big league team on May 31, and he will be honored before Kansas City's home game against Detroit that day.

Moustakas hit .247 with 215 homers and 683 RBIs in 1,427 games, also playing for Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Colorado and the Los Angeles Angels. The three-time All-Star appeared in his last major league game with the Angels on Sept. 30, 2023.

Moustakas was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 amateur draft. He broke into the majors with Kansas City in 2011.

He became a key performer for the Royals during a memorable stretch for the franchise. He hit .284 with 22 homers and 82 RBIs in 147 games in 2015, helping the team win the AL Central. Then he drove in eight runs in the postseason as the Royals won the World Series for the first time since 1985.

Moustakas bashed a career-high 38 homers for Kansas City in 2017. He set a career best with 95 RBIs while playing for the Royals and Brewers in 2018.

Despite battling injuries and sickness throughout the lineup over the course of the regular season, the Barton Community College women's bowling team put it all together when it mattered most rolling to an eighth-place finish at the NJCAA National Championships held this past Friday and Saturday at Airport Lanes in Cheektowga, New York.

Freshman Hope Resendiz led the eight pack of Lady Cougars becoming the program's fourth All-America with an eight-place finish in the 92-participant field.

As a team Barton fabricated 11,342 pins over the two days scored competing in three singles, three doubles, six rounds of five-man games and three baker blocks for its sixth straight Top 10 team finish.

Rock Valley College clinched their fourth straight National Championship besting the 17-team field with 12,780 pins, edging out runner-up Iowa Central Community College by 353 pins with Jackson Community College finishing in third with 12,320 pins.

Resendiz managed an eighth place two-day 2,247 pin accumulation. The freshman begun her All-America quest finishing 13th in singles with a three game 563 edging out teammate JaeLinn Thetford's 14th singles card of 560. Teaming up with Alexis Wareman in the doubles portion, Resendiz amassed 584 over the trio of games while Wareman added 475 as the duo carded the 13th highest combined mark 1059.

Finishing opening day in 11th overall following a three game five-man round 539, Resendiz returned hours later surpassing her Saturday mark with a final three game five-man 561 climbing up the leaderboard three spots to claim All-America status by one pin over Kellogg Community College's Brooklyn Page.

Thetford and McKenzie Craig came behind in the overall standings each posting Top 40 finishes with 31st and 36th placings respectfully. Thetford built her 31st finish behind a 14th best singles score 560, three game 475 doubles tally and six game five-man 993 mark for a final tournament total 2,028. Craig managed her 36th finish with a weekend total 1,977 following a three-game singles 526, 493 doubles count and six game five-man score of 958.

Wareman distributed a 49th place finish with 1798 pins while Ellie Weeks slipped six spots back in 55th with 1,712.

Besting the 22-team field was Iowa Western Community College as the Reivers claimed their program's first title with a tournament top 14,341 score. Hudson Valley Community College drew the runner-up spot with an overall tournament 13,807 score edging out Rock Valley's third-best mark 13,769.

Peterson begun his All-America quest with the 11th highest three game singles score tossing a 651 with a second game high 246 to lead Barton's top individual game. Teaming up with Cole Brown for the three double games, Peterson fabricated a three game 562 with Brown contributing with 497 as the duo calculated the 39th best two-man mark 1,059. Returning Friday for the first three games of five-man, Peterson put himself in contention delivering 679 pins for eighth place before moving four spots higher in the final trio of team games carding a Saturday 646 for a 12-game total 2,538.

Falling just outside of a Top 20 finish was Brown's 22nd performance 2,332 pin count. The Garden City native built his 22nd finish behind an 18th best three game singles mark 620, a 497 doubles tally and six game five-man total 1,215.

Braydon Bastin led the Cougar lineup through the three-singles portion surpassing the 200-mark in all three matches netting the sixth highest total 667. Dialing in a 537 doubles and six-game five team score of 1,033, Bastin concluded his tournament 33rd with a 12-game total 2,237.

Carter Lambeth closed out his two-year Barton career distributing a 35th placing with pin amass of 2,226.

The Cougars' other individual placings came from Alex Wheat's 50th, Logan Lindsley 114th, Torrey Lindsay 122nd, and Khalil Sanchez 126th.

Barton Men's Bowling places fifth for program's highest National finish

The Barton Community
College softball team hasn't had much success in Colby through the
years but Saturday the Cougars swept its doubleheader 6-5 and 6-1 at
Colby Community College for the second consecutive season.

The sweep improves
Barton to 4-0 in KJCCC and 7-5 on the season as Colby drops to 0-4 in
league and 9-7 overall.

Barton heads back to
the road Wednesday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Garden City
Community College before hosting Dodge City Community College on
Saturday.

In game one the
bottom of the lineup collected seven of the Cougars' 13 hits, led by
Elina Bartlett and Karter Alvord's 3-for-4 performances with 2 RBI.

Trailing into the
fourth inning, long balls from Chloe Enslinger's 2-run home run and
Mia Mascarenas' solo shot provided the final scoring difference
putting the Cougars in front for good at 6-5.

After grabbing the
lead, Meleia Ingram settled in the circle throwing shutout frames
allowing just a two-out single becoming the lone baserunner during
the remaining four innings. Tagged with three earned runs of the
Trojans' five total, Ingram struck out 8 total batters with just one
walk and 7 hits improving to 4-2 on the freshman's season.

Allyson McDougal led
the day's performances batting .667 on 6-of-9 from the plate with two
RBIs. Picking up two hits in the opener, McDougal followed with a
4-of-5 performance behind Laney Wood's top of the lineup 2-for-5
combing for six of the squad's 10 hits.

Bartlett's first
inning single put the Cougars up 2-0 in their first at-bat with

DENTON, Texas (AP) — Atin Wright had 21 points to help North Texas hold on for a 68-66 victory over Wichita State on Monday night, upping its win streak to six.

North Texas went into halftime leading Wichita State 31-28. Jossell put up 10 points in the half. North Texas pulled off the victory after a 9-0 second-half run erased a four-point deficit and gave them the lead at 52-47 with 9:33 remaining. Wright scored 14 second-half points.

North Texas is a game behind 16th-ranked Memphis for the conference lead and closes out the regular season at home against Charlotte on Thursday before traveling to play Temple on Sunday.

Hunter skipped both on-field opportunities and quarterbacks Cam Ward
and Shedeur Sanders joined the growing list of top prospects who
opted to work out at their college pro days instead of at the
combine. Fans must now wait days or weeks for the full picture to
come into view, though the combine still was filled with interesting
twists and intriguing plots that will be discussed between now and
the draft, which begins in Green Bay on April 24.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) —
Matthew Stafford chose to stay in Los Angeles. Deebo Samuel was sent
to Washington. Many NFL players will be on the move when free agency
begins next week and the foundation for a lot of transactions was
built at the scouting combine. While 329 college prospects gathered
in Indianapolis to showcase their skills, talk to teams and undergo
medical evaluations, front office executives had plenty of
conversations about players on their rosters and others they plan to
pursue either through free agency or trade. There was a ton of buzz
about several star players, including Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson
and Myles Garrett.

LOS ANGELES (AP) —
Sean McVay insists he never seriously thought his partnership with
Matthew Stafford would come to an end this month after four seasons
together with the Los Angeles Rams. The head coach still acknowledged
he’s “been sleeping better the last couple of days” since the
Rams and Stafford ended their widely publicized negotiations by
agreeing to a restructured contract that gives a substantial raise to
the Super Bowl-winning quarterback. The Rams haven’t revealed the
size of Stafford’s pay raise, but McVay said the quarterback didn’t
add extra years to his contract.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)
— Katherine Legge will become the first woman in a NASCAR Cup
Series race since Danica Patrick in 2018 when the veteran makes her
debut Sunday at Phoenix Raceway. Legge will drive the No. 78
Chevrolet for Liv Fast Motorsports. She becomes the first woman since
Patrick made her final Cup Series start in the Daytona 500 eight
years ago. Legge is a 44-year-old native of England. She has five
career starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. She most recently raced
in a NASCAR race at Road America in 2023. She ran the ARCA race last
month at Daytona International Speedway.

Patrick made her final Cup Series start in the Daytona 500 eight

HOUSTON (AP) — L.J. Cryer scored 22 points and No. 3 Houston won its ninth straight game with a 65-59 victory over Kansas on Monday night.

Emanuel Sharp added 12 points off the bench, including two free throws that pushed Houston's lead to 63-59 with 20 seconds left. The Cougars (26-4, 18-1 Big 12) went 4 of 4 from the foul line down the stretch.

Cryer had 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting in the first half as Houston took a 30-27 lead into the break.

Milos Uzan finished with 10 points for the Cougars, who had already clinched their second consecutive outright Big 12 regular-season title. Mylik Wilson had 10 points, six assists and five rebounds.

Houston shot 35% from the field and was 7 of 20 on 3-pointers.

Hunter Dickinson had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the scuffling Jayhawks (19-11, 10-9), who shot 45%. KJ Adams Jr. added 15 points and David Coit had 14 off the bench.

AP Top 25 Basketball Poll

Historic performances have earned a trio of Barton Community College track and field athletes various weekly award honors.

On the men's side, Trevon Hamer swept all three honors given from the KJCCC, the NJCAA national office, as well as, from the U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Hamer was named the NJCAA Region 6 Championships' Men's Field Athlete of the Week after winning the triple jump and taking second in the long jump with both marks setting personal bests. His mark of 16.25 meters in the triple jump tied a facility record at the Robert W. Plaster Center and also broke the meet record that was previously held by former Olympian and NJCAA Track and Field Hall of Fame member Melvin Lister.

The award was the second conference and national of the sophomore's season with the coaches association honor is his first and fourth Cougar from the indoor season since 2018 joining Tyrese Reid (2021), Davonte Burnett (2020), and Terence Ware (2018).

Keliza Smith headlines a pair of women's honors this week earning her second consecutive USTFCCCA award. Smith captured two events at the region championships, the first coming in the 60m dash clocking a 7.31 to win the title in a program fastest 8th fastest time.

Two hours later, Smith took on the 400m field for just the second time in her collegiate career and first attempt in over a year, beating the field by over a second to break Barton legend Inez Turner's 33-year Region 6 meet record set in 1992 by clocking a program 3rd fastest time of 53.77 which also jumped to the top of the current season nation's leaderboard.

Freshman Celine Riddle was not only named the Region 6 Championships' Women's Field Athlete of the Meet but earned the Week 7 KJCCC honor as well.

Riddle helped carry on the tradition of Barton's region dominance of the runway jumps by winning both the long and triple jump events to join Nia Robinson's 2022 feat as the last Cougar to win both.

In Saturday's long jump, Riddle's personal best 5.80m (19-00.25) edged out defending champion and teammate Chloe Perryman's 5.67m (18-7.25) in registering the second straight year the Cougars finished in the top two spots. The accomplishment also marked the fourth straight and fifth-of-the-last-six region championship meets that Barton stood on top of the medal stand. Previous winners were: Chloe Perryman ('24), Kay-Lagay Clarke ('23), Nia Robinson ('22), and Shemia Odane ('20).

On Sunday the Cougars again went 1-2 in the triple jump, Riddle winning Barton's 6th straight region title by marking an 11.78m (38-7.75) jump, just 1.5 inches ahead of fellow freshman Kymia Bridgett's personal best 11.74 (38-6.25). — Kansas guard Zeke Mayo has shared screenshots of racist, hateful
messages he received following his performance in a loss to No. 10
Texas Tech. Mayo shared the screenshots Saturday. His account on X
appeared to be deactivated Sunday morning. He took credit for the
loss in his post that shared the hateful messages, apologized and
said he “can't be perfect all the time.” Coach Bill Self and
athletic director Travis Goff condemned the posts and wrote their own
messages in support of Mayo.

— Tenin Magassa matched her career high with 20 points and grabbed
16 rebounds, Micah Gray hit some clutch 3-pointers and scored 17 and
No. 21 Oklahoma State held off Kansas 57-51 in a Big 12 Conference
regular-season finale. Magassa also blocked six shots for the
Cowgirls (24-5, 14-4), who set a school record for conference
victories in upping their win streak to four. Oklahoma State finishes
third and won’t play in the Big 12 Tournament until the
quarterfinals as a top-4 team. The Cowgirls’s 24 victories are
their most since winning 25 times in the 2013-14 season. S'Mya
Nichols scored 16 to lead the Jayhawks (16-13, 6-12), who placed
11th. All 16 teams will play for the Big 12 title. Placers five

Those “Underfrogs” from TCU are now outright women's Big 12
champions. The team that won only one conference game two seasons ago
and last year needed open tryouts to fill roster spots after a series
of injuries clinched the title Sunday night. The 10th-ranked Horned
Frogs won 51-48 at 13-time champion and No. 17 Baylor. The 28-3 Frogs
are in their 13th Big 12 season and won a regular-season title for
the first time since the Mountain West in 2010. Second-year coach
Mark Campbell says it's surreal taking a Big 12 trophy home to TCU.

WACO, Texas (AP) —
Sedona Prince had 16 points and 19 rebounds as 10th-ranked TCU won
its first Big 12 regular-season title. The Horned Frogs held on to
beat No. 17 Baylor 51-48 on Sunday in the conference’s first
winner-take-all on the final day in its 29-season history. Hailey Van
Lith added 14 points as the 28-3 Frogs wrapped up their best regular
season ever. Aaronette Vonleh had 17 points and 10 rebounds for 25-6
Baylor, the 13-time Big 12 champion that had its nine-game winning
streak snapped with its lowest-scoring game this season. Yaya Fielder
also had 17 points, but missed a 3-pointer with 6 seconds left.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) —
Christopher Bell passed Kyle Busch with five laps to go, then held
off Daytona 500 winner William Byron to win NASCAR’s first road
course race of the season at the Circuit of the Americas. Bell raced
to his second consecutive victory after an overtime win in Atlanta a
week ago. Once Bell cleared Busch, the Oklahoma driver had to make a
desperate bid stay in front of hard-charging Byron and 2023 race
winner Tyler Reddick of 23X1 Racing’s Toyota. Busch led 43 of 95
laps but faded to fifth to stretch his winless streak to 60 races.

PALM BEACH GARDENS,
Fla. (AP) — Joe Highsmith had to make a nervy par putt just to make
the cut in the Cognizant Classic. Two days later the lefty from
Washington state had the lowest weekend score at PGA National and is
headed to the Masters. Highsmith shot 64-64 on the weekend and
rallied from a four-shot deficit for a two-shot victory. It's the
second week in a row for a first-time winner on the PGA Tour. Jake
Knapp was trying to become the first wire-to-wire winner in
tournament history. That ended when it took two tries to blast out of
the water, leading to triple bogey.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) —
Joel Embiid is done for the season, at last shut down following the
lingering effects of knee surgery. But plenty of hard questions
remain in Philadelphia. There are no easy answers for team president
Daryl Morey heading into the offseason and Embiid’s uncertain
future only complicates any potential long-term success for the
Sixers. This setback was the latest in a steady string of them with
Embiid since the 76ers made him the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014

Monday Boys Sub-State Matchups

After stealing one with late offense in Friday's series opener, the Barton Community College baseball team's bats went stagnant Saturday afternoon as Kansas City Kansas Community College held the Cougar offense to just one run over 15-innings sweeping the doubleheader with a sixth-inning 10-0 run rule and 5-1 victory in the series finale.

As Barton was held to 11 combined hits in the twin bill, the Blue Devils pounded out 20 hits with nine going for extra base hits.

Dropping two of the three games on the weekend, the Cougars move to 5-3 on the young campaign while the Blue Devils improve to 7-4 overall.

Next up for Barton is Tuesday's 7-inning doubleheader with the junior varsity squad of McPherson College in a 1:00 p.m. first pitch from Lawson-Biggs Field before opening conference play on Thursday hosting the Saints of Seward County Community College.

Cesar Gomez was the lone Cougar to collect a hit in each contest finishing 3-for-7 on the day.

John Connors leadoff double in the sixth of game two provided Barton's lone extra base hit after going 0-for-2 in the opener.

Stranding 11 runners on base over the first 11-innings, the Cougars ultimately broke through on the scoreboard with the lone run coming on Hayden Oviatt's groundout in the sixth of game two scoring Anthony Mendez 1-out single.

Barton used eight pitchers on the day, Ethan Minaker taking the opening loss with Owen Pote suffering the nightcap defeat both falling to 0-1 overall.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — JT Toppin had 21 points to lead&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">No. 10</a>&nbsp;Texas Tech to a 78-73 win over Kansas on Saturday.

It was the second win at Allen Fieldhouse (2-22) in the school's history.

Christian Anderson had 15 points and Darrion Williams scored 14 for Texas Tech (22-7, 13-5 Big 12).

KJ Adams Jr. had 21 points for the Jayhawks (19-10, 10-8), who had multiple runs of at least six points.

The Red Raiders used a 16-2 run early in the half to turn a six-point deficit into an eight-point lead. They led 48-37 at halftime.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders were not intimidated by Allen Fieldhouse and the raucous crowd. Despite being 1-21 all-time in the facility, the Raiders responded every time the Jayhawks made a run.

Kansas: The Jayhawks lacked a killer instinct. Even though they clawed back into the game multiple times, they couldn't pull away.

After Kansas came all the way back to tie the game at 73-all, Williams hit a 3-pointer to give the Red Raiders the lead for good.

Texas Tech outscored Kansas 45-12 from 3-point range.

Three straight run producing singles in the top of the eighth inning Friday afternoon ignited the Barton Community College baseball team from its early offensive woes against Kansas City Kansas Community College at the KCKCC Baseball Complex.

Trailing by three with nine outs to work with the Cougar offense erupted for all six of their runs over their final three at-bats to defeat the Blue Devils in comeback fashion 6-4.
