KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team clinched its sixth trip to the MIAA Championship game with a 56-49 win over Northwest Missouri State Saturday (March 9) in the semifinals of the 2024 MIAA Championship, presented by Southern Bank. The Tigers (24-6) never trailed in the second half, holding on over the last 60 seconds thanks to hitting each of their last five shot attempts (1-for-1 FG, 4-for-4 FT).

Looking to lift its third MIAA tournament trophy, Fort Hays State will take on Pittsburg State in the conference title game Sunday afternoon (March 10) beginning at 1 p.m. inside historic Municipal Auditorium.

As for the Tiger men, after shooting lights out against Central Oklahoma in the quarterfinals, Pittsburg State did it again to Fort Hays State in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament on Saturday night (March 9). Pittsburg State hit 14-of-20 3-point field goal attempts on its way to a 69-51 victory over FHSU. Fort Hays State is now 23-7 overall, while Pittsburg State moved to 21-9 overall.

Tiger Women Advance at MIAA Tourney, Men bow out

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs and star Chris Jones have agreed to the framework of a five-year contract that includes $95 million guaranteed and keeps the All-Pro defensive tackle off the upcoming free-agent market, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press late Saturday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the contract details were still being finalized. But the money that is guaranteed is expected to come over the first three years with another two years that are not guaranteed.

Jones, who turns 30 in July, becomes one of the highest-paid defensive players in NFL history, falling just behind the $34 million average annual salary that is being earned by San Francisco pass rusher Nick Bosa. The deal eclipses the $31.6 million average of Rams defensive end Aaron Donald, who had long represented the financial benchmark for a defensive player.

Jones' agents, Michael and Jason Katz, tweeted their congratulations in a post on X, formally known as Twitter, to “the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history.”

Jones tweeted moments later: “KC….5 more years of greatness! 3x”

Jones made it clear immediately after the Chiefs beat the 49ers in overtime in the Super Bowl last month in Las Vegas, allowing them to raise their second straight Lombardi Trophy and third in five years, that he was eager to chase a three-peat. But he first needed to reach an agreement to remain in Kansas City, which had proven difficult over the past two offseasons.

In fact, Jones and the Chiefs were at such an impasse entering the final year of his previous contract that he skipped the entire offseason program, including a mandatory minicamp and training camp, and Week 1 of the regular season. Jones piled up nearly $4 million in fines before agreeing to an incentive-laden one-year deal that got him back on the field this past season.

Jones responded by starting every game the rest of the way, including a meaningless regular-season finale against the Chargers, when he got the last sack he needed to reach 10 1/2 for the season and trigger a $1.25 million bonus in his contract.

Jones had another half-sack in a wild-card win over Miami in one of the coldest games in NFL history, then helped Kansas City win road games over Buffalo and Baltimore to return to the Super Bowl. In that game, the Chiefs fell behind early before rallying to force overtime, then winning the game on Patrick Mahomes' touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman.

The Chiefs have been aggressive in trying to keep the core of the league's second-ranked defense together next season.

Earlier in the week, the Chiefs used the franchise tag on L'Jarius Sneed, giving them the option of keeping one of the best cover cornerbacks expected to hit free agency on a $19.8 million contract next season. After a Mountaineers timeout, Kylee Blacksten missed a potential tying 3 with 8 seconds left. Lee missed two free throws with 3.1 seconds to go before Quinerly’s step-back 3 at the buzzer rimmed out.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler and Shane Lowry share the lead in the Arnold Palmer Invitational after another tough day at Bay Hill. Scheffler one-putted his last seven greens. Lowry also had a strong finish. They were helped plenty by Will Zalatoris. He had a five-shot lead until making two double bogeys over the last five holes. That allowed Scheffler and Lowry to share the lead and lot of others to catch up. That includes Rory McIlroy. He drove the par-4 10th green and shot 30 on the back nine. McIlroy is only four behind. Scheffler and Lowry lead Wyndham Clark by one.

HOUSTON (AP) — Jamal Shead had 13 points, six rebounds and eight assists, Damian Dunn added 12 points and No. 1 Houston claimed the Big 12 regular-season title in its first season in the conference, dominating No. 14 Kansas 76-46 on Saturday.

L.J. Cryer scored 11 points and J’Wan Roberts had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars (28-3, 15-3), who shot 46% from the field and hit 6 3-pointers on the way to a 40-21 lead at the half.

“Showing them what we’ve been doing all year,” Shead said. “They didn’t get our best shot at Kansas, we got theirs. I guess we gave them our best shot today.”

Houston shot 44% for the game and hit 11 of 29 shots from long distance, while forcing 18 turnovers and converting them into 30 points.

“It’s gratifying,” Houston coach Kelvin Sampson said of winning the Big 12. “I’m happy for everybody. There’s so many people that have an inferior complex about ... we’re the University of Houston. This is a damn good school. We live in a damn good city, and we’re a damn good basketball program. We should never ever, ever, ever take a backseat to anybody.”

The Cougars closed out their regular season by winning their ninth straight game and extending their home winning streak to 22 games.

“It’s almost like people thought the only teams we played were American (Athletic Conference),” Sampson said of Houston's former conference. “You don’t get to the Final Four or Elite Eight or Sweet Sixteen without beating other really, really good teams. The only difference was playing them every night, but they had to play us, too.”

Hunter Dickinson had 11 points and six rebounds for Kansas, but left with 11:08 remaining holding his right shoulder after battling for a rebound.

Kansas coach Bill Self said Dickinson dislocated his shoulder, but it popped back in.

“He will have an MRI to see what the diagnosis is and try to get a gameplan moving forward for him,” Self said.

Kevin McCullar Jr., who tweaked his knee earlier in the week against Kansas State, was scoreless in 15 minutes in the first half. He didn’t play in the second half.

“Kevin, he hadn’t done anything since K-State much, and then, today, he felt better, thought he’d try,” Self said. “I wish we wouldn’t have played Kev. It’s a pretty level of concern when your two best players are questionable moving forward.”

Self added that it was too soon to know if either would be available for the upcoming Big 12 Tournament.

Kansas (22-9, 10-8) has lost three of its last four games. The Jayhawks shot 33% and were 3 for 21 from 3-point distance.

Kansas State held them without a field goal for more than six minutes, going on a 12-1 run to help take a 28-24 lead into the break. Then, the Wildcats scored the first nine points as part of a 15-2 run to begin the second half, stretching their lead to 17 while holding Iowa State without a field goal until Lipsey's lay-in with 13:30 to go.

The Cyclones finally got some momentum going, and a 10-0 run got them within 48-43 with 7:18 left.

Kansas State answered by pushing its lead back to double digits, though. And when Iowa State began to slap on full-court pressure in an attempt to mount a late-game comeback, Kaluma and Carter along with Tylor Perry were able to break it, and make just enough foul shots in the final minutes to wrap up the win.

Vivian Onugha of the Barton Community College women's basketball team has been named the KJCCC Player of the Week in the final week's voting of the 2023-24 season.

The freshman averaged a double-double against a pair of nationally ranked opponents last week by putting up 12.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per contest. Shooting 50% for the week, Onugha pulled down 7 of her 21 total rebounds from the offensive glass.

Scoring 14 points and grabbing 8 rebounds Wednesday at 14th ranked Dodge City, Onugha followed with an 11 point and 13 rebound evening against top ranked Hutchinson last Saturday for her then 11th double-double of the season.

Most recently Onugha helped the Cougars to a thirty point win at Colby on Tuesday night with a 10 point and game leading 12 rebounds to notch another double-double on the year.

The award is the first for Onugha and the second for the program this season as Vera Ojenuwa was named the Week 10 recipient at both the conference and national level.

Onugha and the Cougars concluded the regular season with a league 4th best 16-8 mark and 21-9 on the season.

Jones posted a pair of double-doubles last week in averaging 22.5 points on 58% shooting and 13 rebounds leading the Cougars to a pair of victories to clinch the program's first Jayhawk title since 2009.

Beginning his week scoring Barton's opening seven points Wednesday night at Dodge City, the sophomore finished with game high honors of 26 points and 12 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season.

With the Cougars having already clinched a share of the league title, Jones capped the week carrying the Cougars to the outright crown in Barton's 91-78 win over #15 Hutchinson last Saturday by dropping 19 points on 55% shooting and pulling down six of his 14 rebounds on the offensive side.

The effort recorded his fourth double-double over the last five games and 12th double-double of the year.

Most recently Jones logged just 19 minutes in Barton's 93-69 blowout win at Colby scoring 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting, grabbing two rebounds, recording two steals, and dishing out an assist.

Jones' award is his lone national accolade and fourth within the KJCCC this season having won three consecutive in the 4th, 5th, and 6th weeks while additionally garnering the squad's sixth overall joining Myles Thompson's week two and fourteen conference honor.

Research Medical Center didn't provide exact numbers but said in a statement that it treated dozens of people who had experienced frostbite during an 11-day cold snap in January. Twelve of those people — including some who were at the Jan. 13 game — had to undergo amputations involving mostly fingers and toes. And the hospital said more surgeries are expected over the next two to four weeks as “injuries evolve.”

The University of Kansas hospital said it also treated frostbite victims after the game but didn't report any amputations.

The temperature for the Dolphins-Chiefs wild-card playoff game was minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 20 Celsius), and wind gusts made for a windchill of minus 27 degrees F (minus 33 C). That shattered the record for the coldest game in Arrowhead Stadium history, which had been 1 degree F (minus 17 C), set in a 1983 game against Denver and matched in 2016 against Tennessee.

The wild-card game was played the same day the Buffalo Bills were supposed to host the Pittsburgh Steelers, but that game was pushed back a day because a blizzard dumped up to 2 feet (0.61 meters) of snow in New York and made traveling to the game too dangerous.

The game in Kansas City went on as scheduled because the frigid weather didn’t present similar problems getting to Arrowhead Stadium, even though the National Weather Service warned of “dangerously cold” windchills.

Frostbite can occur on exposed skin within 30 minutes, Dr. Megan Garcia, the medical director of the Grossman Burn Center at Research, said in a statement that answered one of the top questions she is asked. The timing can be even shorter if there is a windchill, she said.

Fans were allowed to bring heated blankets into the stadium and small pieces of cardboard to place under their feet on the cold concrete.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Kansas senior Hunter Dickinson has been named one of five finalists for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced today.

The annual Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, named after the Class of 1995 Hall of Famer and three-time NCAA Champion, celebrates its 10th year by honoring the top centers in Division I men’s college basketball.

Joining Dickinson as finalists are Armando Bacot (North Carolina), Zach Edey (Purdue), PJ Hall (Clemson) and Ryan Kalkbrenner (Creighton).

A six-time Big 12 weekly award winner and on nearly every national player of the year and All-America watch list, Dickinson leads the Big 12 and is seventh nationally in rebounds per game at 11. The Alexandria, Virginia, native recorded his 16th double-double of the season with 15 points and 20 rebounds against Kansas State (3/5) and his 16 double-doubles lead the Big 12 and are 10th nationally. With an 18.2 ppg, which is second in the Big 12 behind Kansas teammate Kevin McCullar Jr., Dickinson is the only player in the Big 12 averaging a double-double. He also leads the Big 12 with 14 games of 20-plus points and leads KU with 42 blocked shots and has 29 steals.

Dickinson enters Saturday’s game at Houston with 2,163 points and 1,117 rebounds and is one of four active players in NCAA Division I to surpass both 2,100 points and 1,100 rebounds for his career. Prior to joining Kansas last summer, Dickinson was a three-time all-conference honoree while at Michigan and a 2021 Consensus All-America Second Team selection.

Chris Jones won't have to wait so long to cash in this year.

The Kansas City Chiefs' star defensive tackle will be among the headliners when free agency opens next week and he could eclipse Aaron Donald's three-year, $96 million deal that made Donald the league's highest-paid defensive tackle.

Teams can begin negotiating Monday and can sign players starting Wednesday.

Jones held out last year, missing the entire offseason plus the opener and a $1.1 million weekly paycheck, in a contract dispute that resulted in a restructure of the final year of his contract.

Although the Chiefs retained the right to franchise tag Jones in 2024, they decided to place that tag instead on cornerback L'Jarius Sneed at $19.8 million.

Call them priorities 1A and 1B for Chiefs GM Brett Veach, the architect of the NFL's latest dynasty with a trio of Lombardi Trophies since 2020.

“You'd like to ... pay all the guys and it's tough because the more you win, the more you've got to pay players, and obviously when you have this amount of success you're paying a lot of players a lot of money,” Veach said.

"Hopefully, we’ll be able to figure something out but every free agent is different, unique and crazy. But we do have one tag and ... our goal is to get both those players done and then work down the rest of our roster.”

The 31 other teams looking to knock the Chiefs from their pedestal will begin plugging holes with veterans next week.

The team that made the most racket in free agency a year ago won't be noisy this year.

The Denver Broncos signed 14 veterans to contracts totaling a whopping $242,647,500, which was only slightly more than the $242,588,236 contract extension Russell Wilson signed less than a year earlier.

Now, the Broncos are moving on from Wilson, a separation that saddles them with a record $85 million in dead cap charges, crimping any designs on another spending spree even with the salary cap's historic spike.

“We can't do that every year,” said Broncos general manager George Paton, who began the roster purge Thursday by releasing star safety Justin Simmons to save $14.5 million.

One truism about free agency is it's usually a whole lot less risky to re-sign one's own free agents than to acquire other teams' castoffs, misfits, pluggers or stars.

With that in mind, here's a free agent from every team that front offices want to keep from calling the moving trucks:

WR Marquise Brown has had a star-crossed stint in Arizona but he has flashed when he and Kyler Murray are healthy.

EDGE Calais Campbell. He's valued more for his leadership at age 37, although he did post 6 1/2 sacks last season.

DL Justin Madubuike's 13 sacks and 33 QB hits led all defensive tackles. Baltimore put its $22.1 million franchise tag on him.

EDGE A.J. Epenesa is a consistent, improving player on a team whose purge of players this week cut deep into its core.

EDGE Brian Burns, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, received the franchise tag, which is worth $24 million.

CB Jaylon Johnson, a second-team All-Pro, received the franchise tag, which will pay him $19.8 million in 2024.

WR Tee Higgins received the franchise tag that will pay him just under $22 million next season.

Joe Flacco is the most valuable backup QB in the NFL and Deshaun Watson is recovering from shoulder surgery.

LT Tyron Smith is 33 and often hurt, but he gave up one sack in '23 and remains the NFL's top pass-blocking tackle.

C Lloyd Cushenberry III is one of the NFL's best, but Luke Wattenberg or Alex Forsyth could step in if he bolts Denver.

G Graham Glasgow had a resurgence in 2023 in his return to Detroit after a three-year stint in Denver.

KR-CB Keisean Nixon was an All-Pro kick returner in each of the last two seasons. No more one-year “prove it” deals.

EDGE Jonathan Greenard collected 12½ sacks last season as the Texans returned to relevance.

WR Michael Pittman is coming off his first 100-catch season and received the franchise tag worth $21.8 million in '24.

QB Kirk Cousins. Even at 36 in '24 and with a repaired Achilles, his exit would shake up the Vikings and the NFL QB market.

Safety Kyle Dugger received the Patriots' transition tag, which will pay him $13.8 million in 2024.

Jameis Winston provides a spark whenever he subs for starter Derek Carr, much like Flacco does with Watson out.

FS Xavier McKinney picked off three passes and didn't allow a single TD catch in 2023, solidifying his topflight status.

EDGE Bryce Huff was one of the few Jets who had a stellar 2023 with a career-high 10 sacks and a budding reputation.

RB D'Andre Swift posted his first 1,000-yard season and made the Pro Bowl in '23 after three years in Detroit.

QB Mason Rudolph was terrific subbing for Kenny Pickett in ‘23 and could provide similar support for a new QB in ’24.
