Having a short turnaround with a 6:00 p.m. home match against Colby Community College, Barton easily won the first set 25-12 before taking the foot off the pedal, winning the second 25-23 but dropping the third 25-17, putting the match away with a 25-20 victory.

Barton, atop the conference standings at 12-1 and 20-3 on the season, will close out the regular season this week with three matches, a Monday road contest to Colby followed by Thursday's trip to Dodge City. The Cougars conclude the week with the season finale in what could possibly have conference title implications in hosting Seward County. Salvador Pérez still remembers growing up in the coastal Venezuelan city of Valencia, where as a youngster he would take batting practice against his mother with a broomstick and later play organized ball with the likes of José Altuve.

He never thought a day like Sunday could be possible.

That’s when the Royals gave the six-time All-Star catcher a four-year, $82 million deal — the richest in club history — that will begin after his current contract in 2022. The deal ties Pérez to the only organization for which he’s played until at least 2025, though a club option worth $13.5 million could keep him around for that season, too.

“It’s hard to believe where I’m coming from, where I grew up, to see the situation I have right now, it makes me feel super happy,” Pérez said from the Royals’ spring training home in Surprise, Arizona. “My mother is going to be happy. I know my grandma is going to be happy. I know they’re excited for me to be here for four more years, maybe five.”

Pérez is due a base salary of $13 million as he completes his current contract. He will make $18 million next season, $20 million in 2023 and 2024, and $22 million in 2025 with a $2 million buyout for 2026.

The value of the new deal surpasses the four-year, $72 million contract the Royals gave outfielder Alex Gordon in 2016.

“Nobody loves to play baseball more than Salvador Pérez. There are players that like it just as much but nobody loves it more,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. “Nobody can imagine him not being here.”

Pérez, who turns 31 in May, has not only established himself as one of the game’s premier catchers but also one of the most beloved players in Royals history. He was World Series MVP in 2015, when the club broke its 30-year title drought, and is coming off a season in which he hit .333 with 11 homers and 32 RBIs to win his third Silver Slugger.

He also has five Gold Gloves to his name, and the Royals are counting on his ability to bring out the best in their pitchers to help a young and promising starting rotation that they hope will lead them back to the playoffs.

“I mean, the catching position is without a doubt the most demanding position in our game,” Moore said. “It’s hard, I think almost impossible, to win championships unless you have somebody behind the plate, somebody at the catcher position, that’s a leader — that brings out the confidence in your pitching staff. And Salvy does all that.”

Indeed, Pérez also has proven to be durable behind the plate. He appeared in at least 129 games six consecutive seasons, often arguing against getting days off, until missing the entire 2019 season due to Tommy John surgery.

He returned to have one of the best seasons of his career during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

“It’s the same with everybody: You trust your medical people,” Moore said. “Of course we talked about Salvy, but at the end of the day, they all signed off on it because they believe in his work ethic. They believe in the condition of his body. They believe in his heart and mind to play. He puts himself in a position to go out there every single day.”

Pérez also happens to be a personal favorite of John Sherman, the former part-owner of the AL Central rival Indians, who leads the ownership group that purchased the Royals from the late David Glass prior to last season.

Sherman called a summit in Florida in January that included Moore, Pérez and several other executives, and it was during that meeting that they began hashing out the framework for the new contract. It wound up getting done just weeks before opening day, when the Royals hope to welcome about 10,000 fans back to Kauffman Stadium for each game.

“You know, they believe in me and what I do on the field,” Pérez said, “and all the fans in Kansas City, you know?”

The small-market Royals have long had a reputation for being stingy with contracts, but Pérez’s new deal is the latest sign that Sherman and the new owners are willing to open the checkbook to put a winner on the field.

This past offseason alone, the Royals signed slugging first baseman Carlos Santana to a two-year, $17.5 million contract; they worked an aggressive three-team trade to land Red Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi; they lured right-hander Mike Minor back to town with a two-year, $18 million deal; they bolstered their beleaguered bullpen by signing former All-Star pitchers Greg Holland and Wade Davis, both part of their championship past.

They also have shown a willingness to reward their own. The Royals started March off by signing third baseman Hunter Dozier to a four-year, $25 million contract with the hope that he can bounce back from a rough 2020 season.

As for Pérez, he had no interest in trying out free agency for the first time after this season.

“I want to stay here,” he said simply. “I want to finish my career here.”

Kansas, USC meet in Second Round

If you didn’t pay attention to college basketball until the NCAA Tournament, the good news is you didn’t miss much. The regular season was a revolving door, the schedule and sometimes even the final score determined by which players and teams were entering the sport’s COVID-19 protocol and which were coming out.

Besides, Day 2 of the tournament was just like that.

Oregon beat Virginia Commonwealth 1-0 — technically scored a “no-contest” — and advances to met Iowa because, well, because multiple players on the VCU side tested positive. Their rotten luck. One-fifth of the 2020-21 season got wiped out due to the pandemic, and the coronavirus reminded everyone it doesn’t make exceptions just because all the players now have new blue patches affixed to their tournament uniforms reading “NCAA.”

“It just stinks,” said VCU coach Mike Rhoades, whose team was notified at their pregame meal and went straight into quarantine. “There’s no way I can sugarcoat it.”

Defending champion Virginia, dealing with COVID-19-related issues of its own, had most of its roster in quarantine until Thursday, didn’t arrive in Indiana until Friday, and then promptly got bounced out by 13th-seeded Ohio 62-58. But that was only the second-biggest upset Saturday.

Tiny Abilene Christian, a 14 seed that didn’t even officially join Division I until 2018, took down No. 3 Texas, parlaying 23 turnovers and two free throws by Joe Pleasant — a 58.8% shooter from the line — with 1.2 seconds left into a 53-52 win.

“I was visualizing the free throws going in before I shot them,” Pleasant said afterward. “I was just trying to key in on the rim, just lock in and block out the noise.”

UCLA, which entered the main bracket as a No. 11 after a First Four win over Michigan State, overpowered sixth-seeded BYU 73-62 in the day’s only other upset. Otherwise, it was all chalk.

Both No. 1 seeds playing Saturday came out breathing fire. Gonzaga, the tournament’s overall top seed, crushed Norfolk State, and Michigan manhandled Texas Southern. No. 2 Alabama had its way with Iona and peripatetic coach Rick Pitino, and Iowa sent Grand Canyon — which chartered two private jets to bring 240 members of the GCU student section to the game — packing.

The other winners were Oklahoma, Creighton (narrowly), USC, Kansas, LSU, Colorado (over media favorite and trendy upset pick Georgetown), Florida State and Maryland.

Virginia coach Tony Bennett had an alibi handy for why he didn’t make that list, but declined to reach for it.

“I don’t know if it would have mattered if it was a normal prep or not,” he said. The loss marked the second time in the Cavaliers’ last three NCAA tournament appearances — this time as a No. 4 — that they’ve lost to a double-digit seed in the first round.

“I’m grateful we got the chance,” Bennett added. “You can’t go back and change anything. I thought our guys were as ready as they can given the circumstances.”

Yet not everyone in the same situation had the same result. When No. 3 Kansas started slow, trailing 11th-seeded Eastern Washington 46-38 at intermission, coach Bill Self had good reason to wonder how much firepower he had left.

The Jayhawks bowed out of the Big 12 Tournament after a positive test last week and like Virginia, barely made the Indiana state line in time to claim their bracket spot. Forward Jalen Wilson remains in the protocol and 6-foot-10-center David McCormack was cleared to return only Friday. He hadn’t practiced in 10 days, didn’t start against EWU and after a tiring few minutes in the first half, Self admitted thinking that having McCormack use up all five of his fouls before he ran out of gas was the most he could expect.

Coronavirus doesn't care that it's the NCAA Tournament

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Former All-Pro cornerback Kyle Fuller is reuniting with coach Vic Fangio in Denver.

Fuller quickly agreed to a one-year, $9.5 million contract with the Broncos on Saturday following his release from the Chicago Bears.

Drafted with the No. 14 overall pick in 2014, Fuller was an All-Pro in 2018 when he tied for the NFL lead with seven interceptions. That was Fangio’s last season as Chicago’s defensive coordinator before he became head coach in Denver.

Fuller also made the Pro Bowl the following year when he picked off three passes. He had one interception last season.

CB Kyle Fuller, released by Bears, signs with Broncos

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — David McCormack gave third-seeded Kansas a spark when the big man returned from his COVID-19 quarantine in time to practice for its NCAA Tournament opener.

When the first round game against Eastern Washington began, McCormack gave the Jayhawks much more than a boost of energy.

Put on the ropes early by Tanner Groves and the Big Sky champs, McCormack responded by piling up 22 points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes of work to help slow-starting Kansas rally from a 10-point second-half deficit and beat the No. 14 seed Eagles 93-84 on Saturday to advance to the second round.

“David brought us energy from the time he arrived yesterday,” said Marcus Garrett, one of his closest friends, who fought through foul trouble to add 20 points. “He was just happy to be with us, happy to be back on the court.”

Ochai Agbaji contributed 21 points, Dajuan Harris Jr. scored 13 and Christian Braun overcame a poor shooting day to score 12 as the Jayhawks (21-8) survived the scare to play sixth-seeded Southern California for a spot in the Sweet 16.

Kansas has now won 14 consecutive first-round games in the NCAA Tournament.

“We told our guys you have to play well so your teammates get a chance to experience this,” said Kansas coach Bill Self, whose team is still missing Jalen Wilson and Tristan Enaruna due to COVID-19.

“We didn’t talk about what we did not have, we talked about what we had, that we had to play well, and what we had was enough.”

Tanner Groves scored a career-high 35 points and younger brother Jacob Groves had 23 for the Eagles (16-8), whose third trip to the NCAA Tournament ended just as quickly as the first two — though not without putting up a fight.

The aptly named “Groves Bros” got Eastern Washington off to a flying start. The pair of All-Big Sky forwards combined to score the first nine points of the game and forced Jayhawks coach Bill Self to burn through early timeouts.

Kansas settled down and put together a 17-5 run and suddenly looked again like the big boys out of the Big 12. But Shantay Legans’ motley crew of underrated and overlooked sharp-shooters finished the half on a 24-10 charge.

The Groves kids were at it again. They combined for 3-pointers on three straight trips down floor, then Tyler Robertson added a fourth from the top of the key to give Eastern Washington a 46-38 lead headed into the locker room.

“I just thought Tanner had the advantage all game long and he came up big for us,” Legans said. “He came up aces.”

Compounding problems for Kansas: Garrett, one of the nation’s best defenders, picked up his third foul before the break.

Self turned to McCormack to bail the Jayhawks out. Even though he was only expected to play about 10 minutes a half after his bout with COVID-19, the big guy went to work in the paint as if he hadn’t missed a day. He scored their first eight points of the second half, trying to keep Kansas alive until his teammates could find their shots.

They finally did midway through the second half.

McCormack, who tested positive for the coronavirus before last week’s Big 12 Tournament, continued to score in the post down the stretch, helping the Jayhawks avoid the same fate that befell top-four seed Ohio State and Purdue on Friday.

Kansas could get Wilson back for the next round, though the timing will be tight. The Jayhawks’ leading rebounder is due to finish his quarantine period on Sunday, meaning he would not get to practice before their next game. Enaruna would not be cleared to return until the middle of next week.

There were a few surprises: tiny Abilene Christian, a 14 seed, ambushed Texas when Joe Pleasant — a 58.8 % free-throw shooter — canned two from the line with 1.2 seconds left; and defending champion and fourth-seeded Virginia got clipped by No. 13 Ohio.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Joseph Yesufu scored 21 points and Drake beat Wichita State 53-52 on Thursday night in the First Four, the Bulldogs’ first NCAA Tournament win in a half-century.

Drake’s previous tournament victory was 50 years ago to the day —- March 18, 1971, against Notre Dame.

Wichita State’s Dexter Dennis made a 3-pointer with 8 seconds remaining to trim Drake’s lead to a point. The Bulldogs got the ball in to Yesufu, who was fouled. He missed the front end of a 1-and-1 to give the Shockers a chance, but Wichita State’s Alterique Gilbert settled for a long 3-pointer that hit the front rim as time expired.

Tremell Murphy added 11 points for 11th-seeded Drake (26-4), which advanced to play sixth-seeded Southern California in the West Region on Saturday.

The Barton Community College men's bowling team was back in action this past weekend at the Jayhawk Challenge I and Jayhawk Challenge II held at Royal Crest Lanes in Lawrence, KS.  

Competing against a heavy weighted field, the Cougars managed a 16th place outing in Saturday's Jayhawk Classic I.

In day one action consisting of four-team games and 16 baker games, Barton toppled 6287 pins falling just 84 back of Drury University. William Penn University toppled the field knocking down 7584 pins, 200 better than runner-up Newman University.

Freshman Kaden Goldsmith headed eight different Cougars tossing a team high score of 693 pins placing 65th over four games rolled. Benjamin Banks tallied the lone 200 score for the Cougars turning in a 202 in the first of his two games.

Sophomore Jacob Holden averaged a team best 182 per match.  

Back in action for the second straight day, the Cougar men turned in a strong effort to finish 13th in Sunday's Jayhawk Challenge II.

Barton totaled 6281 pins as a team falling 34 pins back of Waldorf University and 493 pins ahead of NJCAA foe Iowa Western Community College. For the second straight day, William Penn University was the team champion bowling a score of 7321.

Tracey Hill led the Cougars individually rolling to scores over 200 in three of his four games bowled securing a 9th place finish. The sophomore totaled rounds of 202, 221, 193 and 212 for a total score of 828 for a tournament average score of 207.

Creyton Nisly produced the lone other 200 score for Barton with a game two round of 204.

Barton will have a week off before traveling south to the SWIBC III-IV in what marks the final tune up before the 2021 NJCAA Bowling Championships.

Men's Bowling led by Hill’s strong performance at Jayhawk Challenges

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to a $5 million contract for next season with three-time Pro Bowler Kyle Long, who will come out of retirement to help their rebuilt offensive line, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Wednesday night.

The Chiefs also agreed to one-year deals to keep running back Darrel Williams, linebacker Ben Niemann and defensive end Taco Charlton, sources told The AP. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the deals have not been announced.

The Chiefs tendered wide receiver Byron Pringle and offensive lineman Andrew Wylie as well.

Long, whose deal was first reported by ESPN.com, went to three consecutive Pro Bowls with the Bears before injuries derailed his promising career. First came an ankle injury in 2016, then neck, shoulder and elbow injuries that hampered him the following season. In 2018, it was a foot injury that sidelined Long midway through the season, and a hip injury during the 2019 season landed him on injured reserve for what appeared to be the final time.

But after spending last season doing studio work for CBS, Long decided to make a comeback this offseason. He had visited with the AFC West-rival Raiders before agreeing to a contract with the Chiefs.

Earlier this week, they agreed to an $80 million, five-year contract with former Patriots offensive lineman Joe Thuney, giving them a pair of former Pro Bowl selections to anchor general manager Brett Veach’s reshaped offensive line.

Kansas City was decimated by opt-outs and injuries last season and was ultimately exposed by Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl, making the boys protecting Patrick Mahomes an offseason priority. The rebuild began with releasing injured tackles Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz to create salary cap space, then continued with landing Thuney for a guard spot.

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is expected to return after opting out of last season, filling the other guard spot. But that still left the Chiefs in search of a center and two tackles. One of those jobs could belong to Lucas Niang, a third-round pick in last year’s draft who opted out of his rookie season because of the pandemic, while it’s possible Long could move to tackle. He started all 16 games on the right side for Chicago during the 2015 season.

Charlton joined the Chiefs last season after the 2017 first-round pick spent two seasons in Dallas and one in Miami. He started only 12 games during that span, but he appeared to be resurrecting his career in Kansas City, where he rotated with former Michigan teammate Frank Clark before breaking his ankle in a game against Carolina in Week 9.

Williams will get $930,000 guaranteed and up to $2.13 million on his contract, according to The Kansas City Star. The 25-year-old joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and has become a dependable change-of-pace back.

The move to tender Pringle, who would get $2.18 million next season unless another team offers a better deal, was widely expected after the former undrafted free agent had a strong season. Along with being a special teams standout, he came back from a season-ending injury in his rookie season to catch 13 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown.

Wylie has proven to be a valuable offensive lineman and the first name called when there’s been an injury up front.

Chiefs agree to deal with Long to help O-line

The Barton Community College women's bowling team secured a pair of top-15 performances this past weekend in the Jayhawk Challenge I and II held at the West Ridge Lanes in Topeka, KS.

In Saturday's Jayhawk Classic I, the Cougars finished 14th out of the 16-team field.

Barton finished the opening day event tallying 5969 pins over the four-team games and 16 baker rounds falling eight pins shy of College of Saint Mary's 5977. Newman University stood atop the field tallying a best mark of 7142 pins.

Alexandria Newell led the Cougars individually knocking down a 22nd best 763 pins in her four games rolled. The sophomore recorded a pair 200+ games with an opening score of 200 until bettering her mark in the final game turning in a team high score of 224. Taylor Cessna and Martinique Merz joined Newell rolling all four games knocking down 699 and 687 pins respectively earning 47th and 53rd finishes.

Erin Mayfield tallied the lone other 200 game for the Cougars with a first round score of 210.

Looking to close the weekend on a high note on Sunday, the Cougars leaped a pair of spots from the previous days' tournament concluding the Jayhawk Challenge II with a 12th place performance.

Barton tallied 5797 total pins falling 121 back of NJCAA foe Iowa Western Community College. Claiming the team crown was Wichita State University knocking down a top mark of 7040 pins.  

Continuing her solid weekend performance, Newell guided the Cougars individually once more posting a 19th place finish accounting for 751 pins. Newell pieced together a pair more 200+ games in the third and fourth rounds turning in scores of 210 and 223.

Cessna joined Newell as the lone Cougar to reach the 200 mark with an opening score of 214 in her four games rolled.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The buzz was evident from the moment that Whit Merrifield walked into the Royals clubhouse at spring training.

After four consecutive losing seasons, including back-to-back 100-loss campaigns, the Royals made the kind of moves this offseason that served notice that they were done with rebuilding. The signing of veteran first baseman Carlos Santana coupled with the trade for Red Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi filled their two biggest offensive holes, giving Merrifield and the rest of the Royals the confidence that they can compete for a division title again.

“We feel like we’ve signed some really good players, guys that are really going to help our team,” Merrifield said. “We feel like some of these young guys are at the point where they’re ready to help us, and we’re ready to see what they got.”

Oh yes, the young guys. That would be the pitching staff, which welcomed first-round picks Brady Singer and Kris Bubic last season and could see another wave of elite prospects take the mound at some point this season.

They’ll be hoping for more production from a new-look lineup that includes Santana, who regularly challenges for the league lead in walks; Benintendi, who is looking forward to roaming the spacious Kauffman Stadium outfield; Merrifield, the two-time league hits leader; catcher Salvador Perez, who is coming off another Silver Slugger season; outfielder and designated hitter Jorge Soler, a former league home run leader; and Hunter Dozier, back at his natural third base position.

No wonder there was a different feel this spring in Surprise, Arizona.

“We’re not walking out there expecting to lose,” said manager Mike Matheny, who led the club to a 26-34 record during his pandemic-shortened debut season in charge. “Our record wasn’t near where we wanted it to be but our caliber of play was getting close to winning-style baseball.”

Bobby Witt Jr. is universally recognized as the top prospect in the Royals system, and he did nothing to dispute that during a torrid spring training. But the Royals like the defense Gold Glove finalist Nicky Lopez brings to second base, and they will likely give him the opportunity to start the season while giving Witt more experience in the minors.

If the 20-year-old infielder doesn’t make the opening day roster, though, there’s a good chance he’ll be in Kansas City soon.

“This kid, man,” Merrifield tweeted about him recently. To which Dozier replied, “He’s a freak!”

The Royals brought back erstwhile closer Greg Holland last season, and he responded by going 3-0 with a 1.91 ERA in 28 appearances. Now, they’ve brought back Wade Davis, his stablemate from the 2015 championship team, giving some experience to a Kansas City bullpen that was borderline awful last season.

So which other young arms could be taking the field at Kauffman Stadium? Start with left-hander Asa Lacey, the Royals’ first-round pick last summer who earned an invitation to big league camp.

Fellow left-hander Daniel Lynch has yet to pitch above Class A but also got a long look this spring. Right-handers Jackson Kowar and Jonathan Bowlan have futures in the rotation or bullpen, and the ridiculous velocity Carlos Hernandez has shown could make him a late-inning stalwart.

There were precious few jobs up for grabs this spring, even as backups. Cam Gallagher will return behind Perez at catcher, Ryan O’Hearn will likely handle first base duties when Santana gets a day off, and the Royals brought back another member of the 2015 team when it signed veteran speedster Jarrod Dyson as the fourth outfielder.

The one spot in the lineup that could be up for grabs is the utility role. The Royals signed Hanser Alberto to a minor league contract and he’s played well enough — with enough versatility — to force his way on the team.

Matheny acknowledged he may have thrown his team for a loop last year when he sent them some required offseason reading — a book called “Legacy” about the New Zealand rugby team that breaks down its winning culture. So, Matheny let them enjoy this offseason without any homework and they wound up arriving to camp with confidence to spare.

“When you feel like all pieces are all in the same mindset,” Matheny said, “that we’ve got a chance to do something really special here and we just keep making that investment from the top level, it’s just so encouraging. It’s hard for us not to be excited. We’re being realistic here. It’s not just dreaming.”

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to a $5 million contract for next season with three-time Pro Bowler Kyle Long, who will come out of retirement to help their rebuilt offensive line, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Wednesday night. The Chiefs also agreed to one-year deals to keep running back Darrel Williams, linebacker Ben Niemann and defensive end Taco Charlton, sources told The AP. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the deals have not been announced.

Isaac Brown took over on an interim basis but is now the Shockers' permanent coach after guiding them to their first AAC regular season title. They enter the tournament as a No. 11 seed and will face Drake in a First Four play-in game.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Drake basketball coach Darian DeVries has agreed to an eight-year contract extension through 2028-29, athletic director Brian Hardin announced Wednesday night. DeVries has led the Bulldogs to 20-win seasons each of his first three years at the school. Drake's 25 wins this season are third-most in the nation. The Bulldogs play Wichita State in an NCAA First Four game on Thursday. Terms of the extension weren’t announced. DeVries has twice been named the Missouri Valley Conference coach of the year.

The imitation is purely a show of respect toward longtime Kansas coach Bill Self. Legans and Self also have in common the experience of dealing with their seasons being disrupted due to coronavirus protocols. The third-seeded Jayhawks will be without two of their players due to the protocols when they play No. 14 seed Eastern Washington.

Coale is a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and will be inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame this summer. She is a four-time Big 12 Coach of the Year who led the Sooners to six Big 12 regular-season and four Big 12 tournament titles. She finished her college coaching career with a 512-293 record.

Thursday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

In addition to the almost eight million participants in high school sports, more than four million students are involved in other education-based activities such as speech, debate, music and theatre.

And the importance of these programs is being highlighted this month with the celebration of Music in our Schools Month (MIOSM). Although this is an annual event each March, this year’s celebration is particularly special given our nation’s struggles with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NFHS and the National Music Council collaborated on a special video to kick off MIOSM. The video featured several of America’s greatest artists thanking music teachers and letting them know the importance of their efforts in the lives of students – especially in times of crisis like the pandemic.

This video, featuring artists like Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Paul Shaffer and many others thanking music educators, has been viewed thousands of times and has drawn rave reviews. 

The support for music educators from these luminaries has been uplifting because, unfortunately, high school music programs – in many cases – have not proceeded as quickly to a return to activities from the pandemic as their counterparts on the athletics side.

And as many states and schools return to spring sports competition, we would urge that music activities – singing and instrumental programs that are on the calendar – be given equal consideration to return to regular in-person participation.

In cases where schools have returned to 100-percent in-person instruction, there is much research and data to support the allowance of playing instruments and singing in the classroom – with proper mitigation protocols in place.

The NFHS, the College Band Directors National Association and more than 125 performing arts organizations have been involved in an unprecedented aerosol study to determine mitigation strategies that would allow performing arts activities to continue during the pandemic.

Through three sets of results, the study has shown that if music participants wear masks, use bell covers for instruments, maintain social distancing, reduce rehearsal time and increase and/or improve ventilation, aerosol emission can be reduced by up to 90 percent.

Despite the findings from this study conducted by research teams at the University of Colorado and the University of Maryland, many music rooms remain dark and silent while classes are in session in other parts of the school building.    

Bob Morrison, director of Arts Ed New Jersey, which was one of the sponsoring organizations of the aerosol study, noted that the efforts to reinstate winter indoor sports, such as basketball and wrestling, amid the pandemic have been helpful to the performing arts cause.

In the March issue of the NFHS’ High School Today magazine, Morrison noted, “If (departments of health) are going to allow contact athletics like wrestling and basketball to go on – if 10 student-athletes can run up and down the court and bang into each other without masks, and that’s okay – then a quartet wearing masks and socially distancing should be able to play, too.”

We are in full agreement with that assessment. Music activities, along with speech, debate and theatre, should be given an equal opportunity to practice, perform and compete this spring in cases where schools are in session. While many states have conducted some of these activities successfully in a virtual setting, there is nothing to replace in-person participation – if proper mitigation protocols are followed.

We give a special shout-out to all educators in high school performing arts programs for their tireless efforts during the 2020-21 school year. Music, speech, debate and theatre programs provide invaluable lifelong learning experiences for millions of high school students every year. We encourage continual support for these vital education-based activities.

The support for music educators from these luminaries has been uplifting because, unfortunately, high school music programs – in many cases – have not proceeded as quickly to a return to activities from the pandemic as their counterparts on the athletics side.And as many states and schools return to spring sports competition, we would urge that music activities – singing and instrumental programs that are on the calendar – be given equal consideration to return to regular in-person participation.In cases where schools have returned to 100-percent in-person instruction, there is much research and data to support the allowance of playing instruments and singing in the classroom – with proper mitigation protocols in place.The NFHS, the College Band Directors National Association and more than 125 performing arts organizations have been involved in an unprecedented aerosol study to determine mitigation strategies that would allow performing arts activities to continue during the pandemic.Through three sets of results, the study has shown that if music participants wear masks, use bell covers for instruments, maintain social distancing, reduce rehearsal time and increase and/or improve ventilation, aerosol emission can be reduced by up to 90 percent.Complete information from the three rounds of results of the NFHS aerosol story can be obtained here: https://www.nfhs.org/articles/unprecedented-international-coalition-led-by-performing-arts-organizations-to-commission-covid-19-study/Despite the findings from this study conducted by research teams at the University of Colorado and the University of Maryland, many music rooms remain dark and silent while classes are in session in other parts of the school building. Bob Morrison, director of Arts Ed New Jersey, which was one of the sponsoring organizations of the aerosol study, noted that the efforts to reinstate winter indoor sports, such as basketball and wrestling, amid the pandemic have been helpful to the performing arts cause.In the March issue of the NFHS’ High School Today magazine, Morrison noted, “If (departments of health) are going to allow contact athletics like wrestling and basketball to go on – if 10 student-athletes can run up and down the court and bang into each other without masks, and that’s okay – then a quartet wearing masks and socially distancing should be able to play, too.”We are in full agreement with that assessment. Music activities, along with speech, debate and theatre, should be given an equal opportunity to practice, perform and compete this spring in cases where schools are in session. While many states have conducted some of these activities successfully in a virtual setting, there is nothing to replace in-person participation – if proper mitigation protocols are followed.We give a special shout-out to all educators in high school performing arts programs for their tireless efforts during the 2020-21 school year. That’s when the Chiefs can also finalize a five-year, $80 million contract with former Patriots offensive lineman Joe Thuney.

The 25-year-old joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and has become a dependable change-of-pace back.His value to the Chiefs was evident when they decided to release Damien Williams, their leading rusher during their 2019 championship season. He was expected to return to the team after opting out of last season due to COVID-19.The move to tender Pringle, who would get $2.18 million next season unless another team offers a better deal, was widely expected after the former undrafted free agent had a strong season. Along with being a special teams standout, he came back from a season-ending injury in his rookie season to catch 13 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown.Wylie has also been invaluable as a backup offensive lineman often pressed into service due to injuries.Last season was a prime example: Wylie was pushed into the starting right guard job after Laurent Duvernay-Tardif opted out, starting 14 regular-season games and all three postseason games. He also has played left guard and tackle in a pinch.The Chiefs view him as insurance as they rebuild an offensive line that was decimated by opt-outs and injuries last season and ultimately was exposed by Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl. They began by releasing injured veteran tackles Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz to create salary cap space, then struck a deal with Thuney to plug the hole at one guard spot.Duvernay-Tardif is expected to return next season, filling the other guard spot. But that still leaves the Chiefs in search of a center and two tackles. One of those jobs could belong to Lucas Niang, a third-round pick in last year’s draft who opted out of playing his rookie season because of the pandemic.
