The KJCCC basketball regular season has been completed, and pairings and brackets are set for the 2022 NJCAA Division I basketball tournaments.&nbsp; The first two rounds will be hosted at the highest seeds home sites, with the semifinals and finals held at the Tony's Pizza Event Center in Salina. From time to time, everyone needs a wake-up call to get back on course, to regain focus and to “get with the program.” That time is at hand in high school sports as it relates to unsportsmanlike conduct.

In the 103-year history of the NFHS and organized sports in the United States, good sportsmanship has been one of the most important outcomes of these programs. When appropriate behavior occurs, competitive play is more enjoyable for everyone.

And for some individuals recently, the games have not been enjoyable. In the past few months, following are some of the unfortunate incidents that have occurred at the high school level:

The mayor of a city was ejected from his daughter’s high school basketball game after threatening a referee.

A volleyball official was followed off the court by a coach who was shouting obscenities.

A referee was assaulted and knocked unconscious during a basketball tournament.

A student from the opposing school in the stands shouted racist comments at a high school basketball player on the court.

At another game in another state, inappropriate chants were made against the opposing team’s players on the court.

While it was at a lower level, continued poor parent behavior in the stands led a Central New York youth basketball league to end the season early. 

Unfortunately, the list could go on and on. When hearing accounts like these and many others that regularly occur, the primary reason for the current officials’ shortage becomes painfully obvious – unacceptable behavior on the part of coaches, parents and other spectators.

While all of these displays of unacceptable behavior must stop, the recent occurrences of students and other spectators using hurtful, demeaning and hateful language at individuals on the opposing team is heartbreaking.

High school sports and other activities exist to lift people up, not demean or tear people down. The goal is to treat everyone equally and treat each other with respect. Any speech or harassment that is insulting, demeaning or hurtful will not be tolerated.

High schools must establish a culture that values the worth of every single person – both players on the school’s team and players on the opposing team. There must be a no-tolerance policy regarding behavior that shows disrespect for another individual.

Likewise, the accounts of violent attacks against officials are incomprehensible and must be stopped. As Dana Pappas, NFHS director of officiating services, said, “Do you really think that these individuals who are volunteers are going to take a half-day off of work, get paid less than they’re probably making at their real job to go and be unfair in a game? It doesn’t make sense. They are there to give back. They are there to be community servants.”

NFHS playing rules are written to encourage sportsmanship. Participation in these programs should promote respect, integrity and sportsmanship. However, for these ideals to occur, everyone involved must do their part.

Because of a concern that unsporting behavior in education-based athletics has increased the past year, the NFHS has made sportsmanship the No. 1 Point of Emphasis in all sports for the 2022-23 season.

And if there was ever a doubt, the recent unfortunate events at the college level should make it crystal clear that the person most responsible for setting the tone at high school athletic contests is the coach(es).

If coaches act in a sportsmanlike manner, their behavior sets the tone for players, spectators and others. If coaches, however, are constantly complaining about the decision of contest officials, spectators are more likely to do the same. 

There must be a collaborative, working relationship between contest officials and game administration to promote good sportsmanship and safely conduct the contest. Everyone has their roles to play in creating a positive, sportsmanlike atmosphere at contests.

Officials should focus on the actions of players, coaches and other bench/sideline personnel. A positive, open line of communication between officials and coaches ultimately results in a better contest for everyone involved.

Contest officials, however, should never engage with spectators who are exhibiting unsporting behavior. Once the contest begins, school administration is responsible for dealing with unruly spectators. A proactive approach by school administration includes monitoring the behavior of spectators and intervening as needed.

If spectators are using demeaning or profane language at officials – or at others in the stands – those individuals must be removed from the contest by school administration.

Rather than spectators like the ones described above, more fans are needed at high school sporting events. Fans support the officials, the players and the coaches, unlike the fanatics who tear down and do harm to the participants, the school and the community.

Good sports win with humility, lose with grace and do both with dignity. It takes the efforts of everyone every day to ensure that sportsmanship remains one of the top priorities in education-based activity programs.

Girls State Wrestling begins Wednesday


LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Ochai
Agbaji scored 23 points and passed Wilt Chamberlain on Kansas’
career scoring list, leading the No. 5 Jayhawks to a 102-83 win over
Kansas State on Tuesday night.


Agbaji, a 6-foot-5 senior
guard, now has 1,444 points in 110 games, 26th on Kansas’ all-time
list. He passed Chamberlain with his 13th point of the first half.
Chamberlain had 1,433 points in 48 games.


Christian Braun scored 20
points, Jalen Wilson added 17 and Mitch Lightfoot 13 for Kansas
(23-4, 12-2 Big 12), which posted its 16th straight win over K-State
at home.


Kansas is 203-94 all-time
against Kansas State. The 203 victories are the most by any school
over any opponent in NCAA Division I history. Oregon State’s 193
wins over Oregon ranks second.


Markquis Nowell scored 20
points, Nijel Pack, Selton Miguel and Mike McGuirl each had 13, and
Mark Smith added 11 for Kansas State (14-13, 6-9), which finished a
point shy of its season-high.


Kansas maintained its 1½-game
lead in the Big 12 Conference over Baylor and Texas Tech. The
Jayhawks will face Baylor on Saturday in Waco, Texas.


Kansas, which had to overcome
a 17-point deficit in the second half of their victory in Manhattan
in January, didn’t have to mount any comeback Tuesday. The Jayhawks
scored the first bucket of the second half and their lead never
dipped into single digits.


The Jayhawks’ 102 points
matched a season-high. They shot 64.1% (41 for 64) from the field.


K-State stayed close early
with 3-point shooting, connecting on 3 of 7 early on, including two
straight by McGuirl. But Kansas used a quick 6-0 run to take an 18-13
lead.


Kansas gradually pulled away,
taking a 10-point lead on a tip by Wilson with 9:02 left in the first
half. The Jayhawks’ biggest lead in the first half was 16 points at
46-30, and they led 53-43 at halftime.


Agbaji’s 15 points in the
first half led the Jayhawks. K-State was led by Pack and Nowell with
11 points apiece in the opening half.


Kansas State: The Wildcats
probably need to win three of their next four games to reach the NCAA
Tournament. They have home games against Iowa State and Oklahoma,

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Ochai Agbaji scored 23 points and passed Wilt Chamberlain on Kansas’ career scoring list, leading the No. 5 Jayhawks to a 102-83 win over Kansas State. Agbaji has 1,444 points in 110 games, 26th on Kansas’ all-time list. He passed Chamberlain with his 13th point of the first half. Chamberlain had 1,433 points in 48 games. Markquis Nowell scored 20 points, Nijel Pack, Selton Miguel and Mike McGuirl each had 13, and Mark Smith added 11 for Kansas State.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Davion Warren scored 16 points, Bryson Williams had 13, and ninth-ranked Texas Tech won its 20th consecutive home game with a 66-42 victory over Oklahoma. The 22-6 Red Raiders won their fourth game in a row since a loss at Oklahoma two weeks ago. The Sooners have lost four in a row since that win at home. Texas Tech opened the second half with a 10-0 run and later scored 19 in a row. Jalen Hill had a team-high eight points for the 14-14 Sooners. 

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Phil Martelli is all set to guide Michigan for the rest of the college basketball regular season. The 67-year-old Martelli will fill in while Wolverines head coach Juwan Howard serves a five-game suspension. Howard was penalized after hitting a Wisconsin assistant coach in the head during a postgame handshake line Sunday. Martelli has spent nearly four decades as a coach in big-time college hoops, and led Saint Joseph’s within one win of the Final Four in 2004. His first game will be Wednesday night when the Wolverines host Rutgers. Howard is expected to return for the Big Ten Tournament, which begins March 9 in Indianapolis.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Another day ran off the clock in talks to salvage opening day when locked-out baseball players proposed what they considered a small move forward in drawn-out labor negotiations and management termed it a third straight step backward. Management again proposed a federal mediator enter the negotiations, but the union immediately turned down that idea, leaving Major League Baseball on track to lose regular-season games to a labor dispute for the first time since 1995. Still, the sides agreed to meet for a third day in a row tomorrow.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Phil Mickelson apologized for comments he made about the Saudis and the financing of a rival league. Mickelson disparaged the Saudis and said he doesn’t care if Greg Norman’s proposed super league works, as long as he has leverage to try to change the PGA Tour. Meanwhile, KPMG announced that the company and Mickelson have agreed to part ways. Their sponsorship has been around since 2008. Mickelson says he has been under pressure and stress for the last 10 years and says he needs time away. But he didn’t say when or for how long.

UNDATED (AP) — U.S. women soccer players have reached a landmark agreement with the sport’s American governing body to end a six-year legal battle over equal pay. The deal promises them $24 million plus bonuses that match those of the men. The players will split $22 million, about one-third of what they had sought in damages. The federation will also establish a fund with $2 million to benefit the players in their post-soccer careers and charitable efforts aimed at growing the sport for women.

Final KBCA Basketball Rankings (2/22)

A pair of runner-up placings concluded the Barton Community College track and field teams' weekend competing in the KJCCC/Region VI Indoor Championships held at Pittsburg State University's Plaster Center.

The 5th ranked women's team compiled 143 points with seven individual championships led by the trio of golds by Nia Robinson to earn the Female High Point Athlete of the Meet and Kayan Green's runner-up 600m performance ranking 6th best in program history.

The 6th ranked Cougar men moved up a spot after day one's result to finish in a tie for second place with 97 points, earning three first place finishes highlighted by Giovanni Gutierrez' shot put title in taking over the nation's top spot on his program 5th best ever heave.

Barton women's squad added five new national qualifying performances, bringing their total to 24 between thirteen individuals and the top ranked 4x400 relay team.

Also adding five additional national qualifying performances, the Cougar men upped their total to 20 between 12 individuals and its 3rd ranked 4x400 relay team.

Combined, the squads put forth 20 personal or season bests, 11 from the men's team and 9 from the women.

Barton returns to the Plaster Center March 4-5 for the NJCAA Indoor Championships.

Barton Baseball concludes home opening sweep

The Barton Community College softball team split each of its two days of action on a weekend swing through Oklahoma.

The Cougars opened up on Saturday at Northern Oklahoma College-Enid, dropping the first game 6-4 before taking the second in a five inning 8-0 shutout.

Traveling the near four hours to the southeast part of the state, Barton took the first game 7-3 at Eastern Oklahoma State College but fell in the weekend finale 4-3 in walk-off fashion.

Now 6-4 on the season, Barton was to have a final tune-up on Tuesday hosting Bethany College JV but since has been cancelled due to low temperatures. The Cougars will now take the week indoors preparing for Saturday's home 1:00 p.m. conference opening doubleheader against Garden City Community College.

Both Cougar pitchers went 1-1 on the weekend as each move to 3-2 on the year. Game one starter Kayla Beers pitching 10.1 innings, striking out four, earning the victory Sunday allowing just two earned runs of the three scored. Jessica Morgan took over for each of the second games, earning the victory over NOC-Enid spinning a two-hitter before taking the hard luck loss on Sunday despite striking out eight of her twelve on the weekend.

Teegan Krol led the Barton offense batting .545, collecting six hits including a double and home run in driving across five runs. Halie Stoneking also connected on her first home run of the season, joined by Kennedee Lara in collecting five total hits each. Lexi Dryden again solidified the bottom of the lineup batting .333 with four RBI.

Barton Softball splits Oklahoma weekend

UNDATED (AP) — Gonzaga is the unanimous No. 1 in the latest Associated Press men’s basketball poll. The Zags aren’t likely to budge the way they’re dominating the West Coast Conference. Gonzaga remained at No. 1 for the second straight week, receiving all 61 votes from a media panel. Arizona moved up a spot to No. 2 for its highest ranking in four years, with Auburn, Purdue and Kansas rounding out the top five. Gonzaga is winning its WCC games by an average of 27 points. Saint Mary's gave the WCC two ranked teams and No. 25 Iowa moved into the poll for the first time this season.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Adam Flagler scored a career-high 29 points and James Akinjo’s jumper with 14 seconds remaining provided the winning points as No. 10 Baylor defeated Oklahoma State 66-64 in overtime. Oklahoma State’s Isaac Likekele missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have won it. Matthew Mayer added 12 points for Baylor. Bryce Thompson scored 15 points and Moussa Cisse added 12 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks for the Cowboys, Oklahoma State beat Baylor 61-54 on Jan. 15 when the Bears were ranked No. 1.

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Wes Phillips will follow Kevin O’Connell to Minnesota from the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams. Phillips will serve as offensive coordinator for the Vikings under their new head coach O’Connell. Phillips was one of five more assistants for O’Connell’s staff finalized on Monday. The others are special teams coordinator Matt Daniels, defensive backs coach Daronte Jones, assistant special teams coach Ben Kotwica and outside linebackers coach and pass rush specialist Mike Smith. Phillips was the tight ends coach for the Rams for the last three years and added the passing game coordinator title in 2021.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jaylen Clark had 16 points and nine rebounds in his third straight start and No. 12 UCLA avoided a second-half collapse to beat Arizona State 66-52. UCLA improved to 20-5 overall and 12-4 in the Pac-12 with its third consecutive victory. Arizona State fell to 10-16 overall and 6-10 in league play. The Sun Devils closed within one point to cap a 24-12 surge that opened the second half. But the Bruins answered with a 14-2 run to stay in front for good. DJ Horne, Jay Heath and Marreon Jackson scored nine points each for ASU.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Malaki Branham scored 27 points and No. 22 Ohio State rallied to beat Indiana 80-69 in overtime. Indiana led by four with 2:47 to go in regulation, but E.J. Liddell forced a steal with 1:11 remaining and slammed home the tying dunk with six seconds left. The Hoosiers jumped ahead by two early in overtime, but Jamari Wheeler hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:58 left as Ohio State took the lead for good.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — J’Wan Roberts’ dunk with 1.3 seconds remaining in double overtime gave No. 14 Houston a stirring 76-74 victory over Wichita State on Sunday.

It was Roberts’ only basket of the game and followed Wichita State’s Craig Porter hitting a tying 3-point shot with 5.4 seconds remaining in the second overtime.

The Cougars’ Jamal Shead took the inbounds and raced up the floor, hitting Roberts for the uncontested game-winner.

Houston coach Kelvin Sampson credited a loss to Wisconsin earlier this season, when the Cougars failed to execute in the final five seconds. That situation was addressed in practice repeatedly

“We kept putting five seconds on the clock, five seconds on the clock, five seconds on the clock to get a feel for what we can do in that amount of time,” Sampson said. “Jamal learned from failure, and that led to this success.”

Josh Carlton scored 11 of his 23 points in the two overtimes, finishing 9 of 14 from the floor for Houston (22-4, 11-2 American).

Shead scored 13 points for the Cougars while Kyler Edwards, Fabian White and Ramon Walker each added 11.

Porter and Ricky Council each scored 17 for Wichita State (13-10, 4-7) while Tyson Etienne added 15.

“This is a confidence builder for us,” Etienne said. “They’re a great team, and we took them to the wire.”

Much of that credit goes to Porter, who scored eight points in the second overtime. The Shockers started clearing out for him every possession.

“But then Houston went zone, and that gave us a problem,” Wichita State coach Isaac Brown said. “Credit Houston for that. They made some crucial plays.”

Houston built a six-point lead in the first overtime behind Carlton, but Wichita State rallied and Porter’s free throw tied it with 18.1 seconds left. Walker’s 3-pointer at the buzzer fell short sending it to a second OT.

The Cougars are still excelling despite listing starting guards Tramion Mack and Marcus Sasser to injuries mid-season. Sampson said victories like this one make all the difference.

“I had two kids play 49 minutes tonight,” said Sampson, who improved to 8-2 against Wichita State. “Think about that. I’ve neer had that. To win six of seven (conference games) on the road for this group is a really big deal.

Houston leads the American in rebounding margin and offensive rebounding percentage (37.2 coming into the game).

But the Shockers outrebounded the Cougars 20-19 in the first half, allowing Houston only four offensive rebounds in 20 first-half opportunities. Wichita State was even better in the second half, outrebounding the Cougars 15-12. But in the first overtime, Houston grabbed four of the first five rebounds while quickly building a six-point lead And near the end of the second overtime, two Houston offensive rebounds led to Carlton’s three-point play with 13 seconds to play. No. 14 Houston edges Wichita State 76-74 in double OT

MANHATTAN, Kansas – K-State used one of its best defensive performances of the season to register its 14th home win in front of the largest home crowd of the season, 5,868, on Sunday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum, as the Wildcats downed Oklahoma State, 56-38.

K-State (18-8, 8-6 Big 12) held Oklahoma State to a season-low for points in a game. The 38 points are tied for the fewest points K-State has allowed in a Big 12 game in the Jeff Mittie era, which spans eight seasons beginning in 2014-15. Sunday's opponent point total matches the fewest in a K-State Big 12 game since the Wildcats held Texas Tech to 38 in Lubbock on Jan. 31, 2015.

"I think our defense was good," said K-State head coach Jeff Mittie. "I think that we were really active and then I think as we struggled a little bit offensively, we let that affect us a little bit and I didn't think we were as good defensively in the second half."

For the afternoon, K-State held the Cowgirls to 20.0 percent shooting (11-of-55) and a 22.7 percent (5-of-22) performance from 3-point range.

The 14 home wins by the Wildcats this season are the most since the 2016-17 season and marks the fifth time in the 34-season history of Bramlage Coliseum in which the Wildcats have won 14 or more home games.

Panthers Boys Swimming 10th at State 5-1A

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Kansas enters the final two weeks before the Big 12 Tournament in control of its own chances to earn at least a share of its 20th regular-season championship.

There’s still time to clean up the glitches that keep the sixth-ranked Jayhawks from winning some games decisively.

Ochai Agbaji scored 23 points, David McCormack had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Kansas withstood a second-half comeback from West Virginia for a 71-58 victory Saturday night.

The Jayhawks (22-4, 11-2) maintained their two-game lead in the Big 12 over No. 7 Baylor and No. 11 Texas Tech with five games remaining before the conference tournament.

“We can see the finish line now,” coach Bill Self said. “The only reason we need help is if we don’t take care of business. So, I told our guys that right before we played and they took care of business.”

Kansas had a 49-32 rebounding advantage but committed 15 turnovers that allowed West Virginia to keep it close most of the way.

“Sometimes we just have mental lapses and make bonehead mistakes, but when the game is on the line we have to make sure we lock in,” McCormack said.

“I was thinking about, instead of shooting a layup, just turn around, throw it back out and let a guy shoot a 3,” West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. “At the end of the day, that probably would be more fruitful for us than having guys continue to miss layups.

“I’ve been doing this a long time. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Gabe Osabuohien, West Virginia’s top defender, returned from a one-game benching after picked up three technical fouls in two previous games, including an ejection. Less than a minute after he entered Saturday, Osabuohien took a charge on Mitch Lightfoot.

But the Mountaineers couldn’t do much to stop Agbaji, the Big 12’s leading scorer who had a 3-pointer and a layup during a 9-0 run that gave the Jayhawks a 42-30 lead with 17:11 remaining.

Kansas followed that with a more than four-minute scoring drought. Sean McNeil hit two 3-pointers and Taz Sherman one during a 13-point West Virginia burst that cut the deficit to 44-43 with 12:39 left. But the Mountaineers never retook a lead they only held early in the game.

“Just in timeouts, any huddles we had during the game, I just told the guys to keep their composure,” Agbaji said. “They’re going to make their runs. It’s a game of runs. They’re obviously playing at home, they got the crowd. Just stay in it and keep playing our game.”

McCormick made layups less than a minute apart, sank two free throws and Kansas pushed its lead back to 60-48 with 5:11 left.

West Virginia was limited to two field goals over the final eight minutes. McNeil led the Mountaineers with 18 points and Sherman, second in the Big 12 to Agbaji in scoring, added 16.

Christian Braun added 10 points and he and Jalen Wilson had 11 rebounds for Kansas, which won in Morgantown for the fourth time in 10 tries under Self.

Kansas: In late February, it’s all about staying healthy and gaining momentum toward tournament time, and Kansas has won three straight. But there are plenty of challenges left, including a trip to Baylor next Saturday.

West Virginia: The week wasn’t a total loss for the Mountaineers, whose only representation at the NCAA Tournament could be Huggins. He was announced Friday among the finalists for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The class of 2022 will be announced at the Final Four on April 2 in New Orleans.

Huggins seems to think his team still has a chance to make the Big Dance.

“There’s still opportunity there,” he said. “As long as there’s an opportunity there and there’s a chance to keep fighting, we’re going to keep fighting.”

Kansas: Hosts rival Kansas State on Tuesday. The Jayhawks won 78-75 on the road in their earlier meeting.

West Virginia: Travels to TCU on Monday in a makeup of a Jan. 3 game that was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the Horned Frogs’ program. The Mountaineers will play three games in six days.

(AP) — Kansas enters the final two weeks before the Big 12 Tournament in control of its own chances to earn at least a share of its 20th regular-season championship.There’s still time to clean up the glitches that keep the sixth-ranked Jayhawks from winning some games decisively.Ochai Agbaji scored 23 points, David McCormack had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Kansas withstood a second-half comeback from West Virginia for a 71-58 victory Saturday night.The Jayhawks (22-4, 11-2) maintained their two-game lead in the Big 12 over No. 7 Baylor and No. 11 Texas Tech with five games remaining before the conference tournament.“We can see the finish line now,” coach Bill Self said. “The only reason we need help is if we don’t take care of business. So, I told our guys that right before we played and they took care of business.”Kansas had a 49-32 rebounding advantage but committed 15 turnovers that allowed West Virginia to keep it close most of the way.“Sometimes we just have mental lapses and make bonehead mistakes, but when the game is on the line we have to make sure we lock in,” McCormack said.“I was thinking about, instead of shooting a layup, just turn around, throw it back out and let a guy shoot a 3,” West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. “At the end of the day, that probably would be more fruitful for us than having guys continue to miss layups.“I’ve been doing this a long time. I’ve never seen anything like it.”Gabe Osabuohien, West Virginia’s top defender, returned from a one-game benching after picked up three technical fouls in two previous games, including an ejection. Less than a minute after he entered Saturday, Osabuohien took a charge on Mitch Lightfoot.But the Mountaineers couldn’t do much to stop Agbaji, the Big 12’s leading scorer who had a 3-pointer and a layup during a 9-0 run that gave the Jayhawks a 42-30 lead with 17:11 remaining.Kansas followed that with a more than four-minute scoring drought. Sean McNeil hit two 3-pointers and Taz Sherman one during a 13-point West Virginia burst that cut the deficit to 44-43 with 12:39 left. But the Mountaineers never retook a lead they only held early in the game.“Just in timeouts, any huddles we had during the game, I just told the guys to keep their composure,” Agbaji said. “They’re going to make their runs. It’s a game of runs. They’re obviously playing at home, they got the crowd. Just stay in it and keep playing our game.”McCormick made layups less than a minute apart, sank two free throws and Kansas pushed its lead back to 60-48 with 5:11 left.West Virginia was limited to two field goals over the final eight minutes. McNeil led the Mountaineers with 18 points and Sherman, second in the Big 12 to Agbaji in scoring, added 16.Christian Braun added 10 points and he and Jalen Wilson had 11 rebounds for Kansas, which won in Morgantown for the fourth time in 10 tries under Self.BIG PICTUREKansas: In late February, it’s all about staying healthy and gaining momentum toward tournament time, and Kansas has won three straight. But there are plenty of challenges left, including a trip to Baylor next Saturday.West Virginia: The week wasn’t a total loss for the Mountaineers, whose only representation at the NCAA Tournament could be Huggins. He was announced Friday among the finalists for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The class of 2022 will be announced at the Final Four on April 2 in New Orleans.Huggins seems to think his team still has a chance to make the Big Dance.“There’s still opportunity there,” he said. “As long as there’s an opportunity there and there’s a chance to keep fighting, we’re going to keep fighting.”UP NEXTKansas: Hosts rival Kansas State on Tuesday. The Jayhawks won 78-75 on the road in their earlier meeting.West Virginia: Travels to TCU on Monday in a makeup of a Jan. 3 game that was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the Horned Frogs’ program. The Barton Community College baseball team scored early and never looked back Saturday afternoon as the Cougars swept their home opener over Western Nebraska Community College with a pair of run rule victories 11-1 and 12-2.

The victories improve Barton to 4-0 on the season while Western Nebraska drops to 1-5 on the year. Winners of 18 straight in the head-to-head series, the Cougars will look for their fifth straight series sweep Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field as the two wrap up the four-game set with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
