Panthers beat Dodge City 4-3 in big WAC baseball win

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas senior forward David McCormack has declared for the 2022 NBA Draft. He announced his intent via social media Tuesday.

“Man, what a ride these last four years have been,” McCormack posted. “It’s crazy to think how much I’ve grown both on and off the court – as a person and a player. For that, I have to thank our coaches, my teammates, and of course my family. I also want to thank Jayhawk Nation, and those who always believed in me. This place is special because of you, and there truly is no place like Kansas. After talking with my family and coaches, I have decided to declare for the 2022 NBA Draft. I can’t imagine ending my career at Kansas better than we did this past season, as National Champions. Rock Chalk!”

Named the 2022 Big 12 Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the co-Danny Manning Mr. Jayhawk Award recipient last week, McCormack averaged 10.6 points and 7.0 rebounds his senior campaign. The Norfolk, Virginia, forward was named to the Final Four All-Tournament Team, where he averaged 20.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in KU’s two wins versus Villanova and North Carolina. In the title contest against UNC, McCormack posted his 11th double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

“We are all excited for David,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said. “What David did in the NCAA Tournament puts him in a position that he can capitalize on this. We should all appreciate everything he has given to us throughout his career at Kansas and we are certainly not national champs without his efforts and sacrifices he made to our program. This is a good day and we respect and support David in his wishes.”

A three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree, McCormack’s 11 double-doubles led the conference in 2021-22. His 7.0 rebounds ranked third in the Big 12 and he was eighth in free throw percentage at 75.6% and ninth in blocked shots per game (0.8). A 2022 All-Big 12 Third Team honoree, last season in 2020-21, McCormack led the Big 12 in field goal percentage at 51.5% and was the first recipient of the league’s Most Improved Player Award.

McCormack concluded his Kansas career with 1,148 points, which ranks 46th on the KU career scoring list.

David McCormack Declares for the NBA Draft

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head coach Jerome Tang announced the addition of his first-ever signee on Monday (April 18) with transfer Jerrell Colbert (Houston, Texas/Houston/LSU) inking a Financial Aid Agreement with the program for the 2022-23 season.

A former top-150 recruit and a 4-star recruit by Rivals, the 6-foot-10, 216-pound center arrives at K-State after spending his freshman season at LSU in 2021-22. He saw action in 4 games as a true freshman, logging 27 minutes of playing time for a team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

"We are excited about adding Jerrell to our family," said Tang. "Our staff know the Colbert Family extremely well because we all had interactions with them previously. Jerrell is an outstanding young man with a great family, and we are thrilled to have them as a part of our program. We can't wait for him to get to campus and become a part of this special community. The K-State Family and city of Manhattan will love Jerrell as both a person and player."

A native of Houston, Colbert played in four of LSU's first 10 games in 2021-22, averaging 6.6 minutes per game. He scored his first collegiate points in the opener with Louisiana-Monroe on Nov. 9, while posting 2 rebounds and a blocked shot in just over 9 minutes of action. He also had a block and a steal in two other games, while he also had a season-tying 2 rebounds vs. Northwestern State on Dec. 14. For the season, he averaged 0.5 points, 1.3 rebounds, 0.5 assists and 0.5 blocks per game.

"I've had a really good connection with Coach (Jerome) Tang since I was in middle school," Colbert told On3 national recruiting expert Joe Tipton on his decision to sign at K-State. "I always wanted to play for him so that's why I'm becoming a Wildcat. Now let's eat."

Colbert played his senior season at Houston High School in Germantown, Tennessee, where he played for former NBA player Mike Miller. He helped lead the Mustangs to their first-ever state championship, as he scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in a 62-43 win over Cane Ridge in the 2021 Class 3A State Championship game. The team, which also included Oregon's Johnathan Lawson, Creighton's Mason Miller and South Carolina State's T.J. Madlock, won their last 14 games of the 2020-21 season en route to a 21-3 record. Colbert was named Second Team All-Metro by the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Prior to enrolling at Houston High School, Colbert played the 2019-20 season at Cornerstone Christian Academy in San Antonio, where he averaged 12 points and 11 rebounds. He was the top overall performer at the ARS/Rescue Rooter National HoopFest in Tampa after collecting 21 points, 18 rebounds and 6 blocks in Cornerstone's win over St. Pete (Fla.) in late January 2020.

Colbert was rated 66th on the ESPN100 as well as the No. 134 national prospect by 247Sports. He was a 4-star recruit by Rivals and ESPN. He was listed as the 20th-best center and the third-best player in the state of Tennessee by 247Sports.

Colbert held at least 17 high-major offers out of high school, including Arkansas, Baylor, Cal, Houston, Memphis, TCU, Texas, Texas A&amp;M, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest, before selecting LSU.

Tang Announces the Addition of Transfer Jerrell Colbert

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The new faces of the Kansas City Chiefs offense are getting to know each other in the warm Texas sun, rather than the cold Kansas City rain, after Andy Reid decided to make voluntary offseason workouts a virtual exercise this season.

In a departure from his previous three decades of offseason work, Reid said Monday that he's encouraging his players to Zoom into voluntary meetings — rather than attend in person at the Chiefs practice facility — so that they can continue their workouts from anywhere in the country ahead of more formalized team activities next month.

“There's a number of guys here lifting,” Reid said, “but again, these are all voluntary camps, all three phases.”

That hasn't stopped a number of players from congregating around Patrick Mahomes in Texas, where the star quarterback spends the offseason. Many of them are new faces that the Chiefs have added to the offense after trading three-time All-Pro Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins and losing wide receivers Demarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle in free agency.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling and JuJu Smith-Schuster are the biggest names that Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has landed to help fill Hill's void in the offense. The Chiefs also have signed Ronald Jones II to help at running back, and there are several other players that have been signed to compete for a spot on the roster next season.

The work toward that goal began this week in the virtual meeting room with Reid and his coaches, and on the Texas practice fields with Mahomes, who knows the foundation for a successful season begins long before kickoff in September.

“The biggest thing for the work we've been getting in Texas is to build those relationships,” Mahomes said by Zoom. “That's what has made us great the last few years, the bond of our team, the chemistry we have, so we can be who we are. I wanted to get everybody together so they can meet each other, get to know each other and build those friendships.”

There are always new faces, even for the most successful of franchises, but the near-total revamp that the Chiefs have had this offseason is rare for a club so stable that it has hosted the past four AFC championship games.

Hill was the biggest departure, shipped to the Dolphins for a slew of draft picks that could further remake the offense next week. It was a move that made eyebrows raise across the league both for the value that Hill has had for Kansas City and for the record contract that Miami gave him the moment he arrived in South Florida.

Smith-Schuster, who showed flashes of stardom in Pittsburgh, and Valdes-Scantling, who must be living right to go from Aaron Rodgers to Mahomes as his quarterback, are high-upside players that Veach believes can balance Hill's production.

“Myself and Brett keep it wide open with Patrick. There's a pretty good chance change will take place throughout your career. That's all part of it," Reid said off the offseason maneuvering. “It's important that they see that it's part of this game, and change does take place, and I think you beat around the bush on it, I don't think that's good, either.”

The change hasn't been solely on the offensive side of the ball, either.

Veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu, who was so important in setting the defense the past three seasons, remains on the free-agent market. The Chiefs also released linebacker Anthony Hitchens, who often relayed the defensive plays.

The Chiefs signed Justin Reid, formerly of the Texans, to take over Mathieu's spot in the secondary. The linebacker group is being turned over to second-year pro Nick Bolton and Willie Gay Jr., a pair of younger players with higher ceilings.

“In this day and age, unfortunately, you can't just pay everybody," Reid said. “It's hard thing to do to extend contracts. You're going to lose a guy here and there. There's how it works.”

The result is a team that is certain to look very little like the one that lost in the AFC title game to Cincinnati, and even less like the one that went to back-to-back Super Bowls and won the Chiefs' first championship in five decades.

“I don't need them here right now,” Reid said. “We've played a lot of games the past four or five years, maybe more than anybody in the National Football League. I think some time away and bonding with new players is important. And when they get here, they'll be revved up, and we'll be here for quite some time. So these next two weeks they can work and get to know each other away from here and I think that's important.”

The Barton Community College eSports team wrapped up the spring regular season this week with the Cougars clinching five into the NJCAAE Playoffs.

Concluding the season at 61-33 as a squad, Barton wrapped the week nine action with a 6-4 mark while a pair locked a perfect season joining the Rainbow 6 Siege team.

Postseason action gets underway on Monday with a NBA2K doubleheader, a pair of Madden 22 contests on Tuesday and Call of Duty Cold War Gunfight 2v2 to conclude the opening week of the NJCAAE Playoffs on Thursday.

Madden 22 gamer Chance Costello joined his teammate Davon Morris with a perfect (8-0) regular season record and perfect (16-0) games record earning a 2-0 triumph over Northeastern Oklahoma A&amp;M College. Costello heads into the NJCAAE postseason as the top seed matching up against the eighth seed from Fort Scott Community College while Morris the defending fall national champion heads into the big dance as the second seed matching up with in-state foe Hutchinson Community College.

Undefeated heading into the final week of the regular season, NBA2K participant Anthony Twiggs fell just short of a perfect regular season at 8-1, splitting his pair of contests for the week. Making up his week one contest on Thursday night, Twiggs experienced his first hiccup of the season dropping a 2-1 decision to Catawba Valley Community College before bouncing back on Friday night cruising to a 2-0 victory over Central Wyoming College.

Riding a six-game winning streak since dropping his season opener to Gogebic Community College, Kaleb Lininger sustained his winning ways with a 2-0 crushing victory over Utah State University Eastern concluding his regular season with a 7-1 sheet.

Joshua Neal wrapped his 2K campaign with a 2-0 victory over Nassau Community College closing his season a game above .500 at 5-4.

Lininger and Twiggs will open their postseason run Monday as the second and fourth seeds taking on Dallas College Mountain View and St. Clair Community College respectfully.

Needing a win to solidify its' spot in the Call of Duty Gunfight 2v2 big dance the duo of Kindric Castro and Adam Hardin achieved just that earning a 3-1 win over Trinidad State College. Sitting at 8-1 heading into the playoffs as the fifth seed, the pair will begin their quest to their second straight national title game in as many semesters on Thursday against Bryant and Stratton College (WI).

The Call of Duty Vanguard 4v4 team ended their season on a positive note snapping its' seven match losing streak finishing their season at 2-7 overall.

Madden 22 gamer Caden Nokleby, the Rocket League team and the Vanguard squad had their seasons close on sour notes dropping 2-1, 3-0 and 2-0 decisions respectfully.

A limited squad of thirteen athletes from the Barton Community College track and field program continued its process of reaching post-season aspirations with a competitive Saturday's work at the Grizzly Classic hosted by Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas.

Barton will assemble its full squad for its next meet taking place April 22-23 in Norman, Oklahoma, for the John Jacobs Invitational.

Six members of the top ranked women's team competed in the one day limited event with three achieving personal best efforts.

Ida Seesay took on the short sprints, setting a new best in a 9th place 100m time of 12.65 and just falling .13 short of a new best in the 200m with a 25.22 time to take 3rd place.

Malama Toure had a busy day of three events in preparation of competing in the heptathlon in post-season, setting a new best in the 200m at 27.35 for 18th, adding in a 2nd place long jump of 4.93m and a 7th place in the high jump at 1.47m.

Also a multi-event performer, Jasmine Carson reached a personal best 1.41m high jump to place 5th and finished 2nd in the triple jump at 9.80m.

Nia Robinson won the women's lone first place of the day, rising to a 1.67m height to win better the high jump field with Molly Norris' 1.43m placing fourth ahead of Carson's 5th and Toure's 7th.

The lone Cougar in the 100m hurdles, Ashanti Harvey placed 3rd with a 16.28 time.

Seven Cougar men of the nation's 2nd ranked squad competed and chalked up four personal bests.

Two of the bests were achieved in the 400m as Andrew Ferguson won the event on a 48.68 time with Zander Von Stade placing 5th at 49.66.

Jye Gillard clocked a 200m best 21.83 in placing 13th with Von Stade leading the three Cougar entries with a 21.54 placing 9th while Xavier Madden finished 26th at 22.77. Madden was the lone Cougar in the shorter 100m, clocking an 11.19 to place 18th.

A trio of Cougars took on the longer events, Djordje Racic leading the way with a 15th place 800m 2:13.53 time and a 1500m clocking of 4:27.39 placing 8th. Trent Padilla set a new 800m tie of 2:17.81 to place 21st and was just off his pace in the 1500m in clocking a 16th place 4:47.47. Ethan Woodrome was two spots behind in 18th at 4:55.69 and placed 26th in the 800m at 4:55.69.

Barton track and field continues the process at Grizzly Classic

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Before a capacity crowd on the floor of Allen Fieldhouse, the Kansas men’s basketball senior trio of Ochai Agbaji, David McCormack and Mitch Lightfoot were named co-recipients of the 2022 Danny Manning Mr. Jayhawk Award at its annual banquet Thursday.

Players, coaches, staff, families and Williams Education Fund donors packed Allen Fieldhouse to honor the 2022 NCAA National Championship team. Displayed on the stage were the trophies the 2022 squad won during the season – the Big 12 regular-season, the Big 12 Tournament, the NCAA Midwest Region and the NCAA title. During the evening, head coach Bill Self was also presented the crystal NABC National Championship trophy for finishing No. 1 in the 2022 USA TODAY Coaches’ Poll.

The evening emcee was Brian Hanni, radio voice of the Jayhawks. Following an invocation from KU All-America and associate athletics director Wayne Simien, the participants ate dinner while watching highlight videos of key moments in Kansas’ national championship run. Following the video Director of Athletics Travis Goff addressed the crowd, which was followed by the formal presentation of the NABC trophy. Self then introduced staff, players, by class, and coaches. KU’s six seniors said a brief word to the crowd and then Self handed out the Danny Manning Mr. Jayhawk trophies.

"I don’t know about you guys but I haven’t come down yet and I don’t know that I want to. You work so hard for a common cause and you actually do it. You feel elation but you also feel overwhelmed and humbled. This team will go down as loved as any team in the 120-plus years of history at this school. The players that come here are caretakers in the period of time they are here, and what a great job this group has done as caretakers."

Kansas won its final 11 games of the season, posting a 34-6 overall record and tying Baylor for the Big 12 regular-season title with a 14-4 league mark. KU won its 12th Big 12 and 16th all-time conference tournament title and advanced to its NCAA-record 32nd consecutive NCAA Tournament, a streak that started in 1990. KU would then advance to its 32nd all-time Sweet 16 and its 16th Final Four. With its 72-69 win against fellow blueblood North Carolina in the championship game, KU secured its sixth all-time, fourth NCAA, national title, its first since 2008 and second under Self.

A finalist for most all 2022 national player of the year awards, Agbaji was named the unanimous 2022 Big 12 Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring with an average of 18.8 points per game. The Kansas City, Missouri, guard finished second in the league in three-point field goal percentage (40.9%, 23rd nationally) and second in three-point field goals made per game (2.6).

A four-year starter for KU, Agbaji etched his name into the Kansas records book. He set the record for consecutive games of three-point field goals made at 53. Agbaji concludes his KU career ranked 15th on the KU career scoring list with 1,652 points, fourth on the three-point field goals made (250), fourth on three-point field goals attempted (670) and ninth in minutes played (3,978).

Named the 2022 Big 12 Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this week, McCormack averaged 10.6 points and 7.0 rebounds his senior campaign. The Norfolk, Virginia, forward was named to the Final Four All-Tournament Team, where he averaged 20.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in KU’s two wins versus Villanova and North Carolina. In the title contest against UNC, McCormack posted his 11th double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

McCormack concludes his career with 1,148 points, which ranks 46th on the KU career scoring list.

Being a part of six seasons at Kansas, Lightfoot will go down as the winningest player in KU history as KU amassed 171 victories from 2016-17 through 2021-22. The Gilbert, Arizona, forward donned the KU uniform in 168 games which ranks fifth all-time in NCAA history.

As a Jayhawk, Lightfoot won four Big 12 regular-season titles, two Big 12 Tournaments and advanced to six NCAA Tournaments, three Elite Eights and two Final Fours, garnering the 2022 National Championship. His 17 career games played in the NCAA Tournament are more than any other KU player. Lightfoot concludes his KU career No. 9 on the career blocked shots list at 156.

🏀 Kansas trio named Mr. Jayhawk for 2021-22

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Today’s 1:10 p.m. CT game between the Royals and Tigers at Kauffman Stadium has been postponed and will be rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on Monday, July 11. Game 1 of that doubleheader will start at 1:10 p.m. CT, and Game 2 (the originally scheduled game) will follow at 7:10 p.m. CT. Both games of the split doubleheader will be 9-inning regulation games.

The Cougars got a six solid frames from starter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bartonsports.com/sports/bsb/2021-22/bios/reynolds_owen_nfdw">Owen Reynolds</a>&nbsp;in the opener earning a 6-2 victory before the 4-3 walk-off in the nightcap sealed the weekend series victory.

Winners of three straight, Barton remains atop the KJCCC West standings at 18-6 moving to 31-11 overall while the Saints fall to 5-15 in league play and 12-30 on the season. 

Entering their conference bye week, the Cougars will head back on the road Thursday to open a four game non-conference tilt against the Red Ravens of Coffeyville Community College. First pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Walter Johnson Park with the series concluding Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. from Lawson-Biggs Field.

Rodgers walk-off single lifts Barton to doubleheader sweep of Seward

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hunter Dozier homered to break a tie in the sixth, and lead the Kansas City Royals to a 3-1 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

After Carlos Santana walked with one out, Dozier lifted an 0-2 pitch from Will Vest (0-1) into the left field bleachers for his first home run of the year.

“Going up there I was actually looking fastball because he likes to run it in,” Dozier said. “When I got down 0-2, I was able to react to a slider and put a really good swing on it.”

Collin Snider (2-0), the first of four Royals relievers, picked up the victory getting five outs. Josh Staumont earned the club’s first save of the season as Kansas City snapped a five-game losing streak.

“(Staumont) looked like he had something to prove,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “He came in and looked different. He came in pounding the zone and it was a thing of beauty.”

“We needed this,” Dozier said. “Anytime you can get a win, but we needed to break that losing streak.”

Royals starter Kris Bubic departed after 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits and five walks; he struck out four.

“Probably not the greatest recipe for success,” Bubic said, “but found a way to get through it and the bullpen was huge picking us up there.”

Kansas City took an early 1-0 lead when Bobby Witt, Jr., and Andrew Benintendi singled with one out in the first. Salvador Perez brought in Witt with a ground out. It was the first run scored by the Royals in the first inning this year. They have surrendered 11 first-inning runs.

The Tigers responded the next inning when Dustin Garneau’s two-out double plated Daz Cameron, who had walked and stolen second.

Detroit starter Matt Manning left the game after two innings with right shoulder discomfort; he allowed a run on five hits with two strikeouts.

Dozier’s two-run homer lifts the Royals to win over Detroit

Ashantae Harvey and Almond Small of the Barton Community College track and field team has been named the week four Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week respectively.

The duos performances came last weekend at the Jo Meaker Classic &amp; Multi hosted by West Texas A&amp;M University where Barton recorded a combined 34 new personal bests performances or season best performances with the Cougar women accounting for 15 and their counterparts adding 19.

Harvey surpassed national qualifying standards in recording a program top-five best time in the 500m hurdles with a 59.17 finishing runner-up to teammate and program record holder Lashanna Graham.

Sitting with the second top spot of the season in NJCAA performances, the freshman also entered the 200m all-conditions program record book, clocking an event and personal best 3rd place time of 23.52.

Small shined leading the Cougar best times in the short sprints placing runner-up in the 200m, not only posting a national qualifying time of 20.50, but doing so in a wind legal time in what is a Canadian U20 national record.

The freshman took the top time of the 36-entry field on a personal best 10.17 leading four other Cougars.

Barton will return to action this weekend at the Grizzly Classic held by Butler Community College in El Dorado, KS. The Cougars will then travel down south to Norman, Oklahoma, for the the John Jacobs College Invitational held April 22nd-23rd.

Great Bend and Garden City battled to
a pair of one run victories Friday at the Great Bend Sports Complex.

The
Panthers took game one 5-4 before Garden City returned the favor with
a 4-3 victory in game two.

Great
Bend is now 6-3 on the season heading into Tuesday’s home double
header against Dodge City.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Rookie Spencer Torkelson hit a long two-run homer and had two of Detroit’s three hits, and the Tigers handed the Kansas City Royals their fifth straight loss, 2-1 on Friday night.

Miguel Cabrera doubled with one out in the seventh, leaving him five hits shy of 3,000. Torkelson followed one out later with a 432-foot bomb to left off Brad Keller, the second of his career. The rookie also had a two-out single in the fifth.

“It’s a big emotional hit,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “A big swing like that put a jolt in the dugout. It’s a great way to stamp his arrival.”

“It’s a really special moment,” Torkelson said. “That inning doesn’t happen without (Cabrera’s) double.”

Tarik Skubal fanned six of the first eight Royals batters and retired the first 11 before Salvador Perez squeezed a grounder through the left side for the game’s first hit with two out in the fourth.

“I felt pretty synced up to kind of incorporate the things I was working on,” Skubal said. “I felt good from the start.”

Jacob Barnes (1-0) worked 1 1/3 hitless innings, Joe Jimenez handled the eighth and Michael Fulmer pitched a perfect ninth for his first save as the Tigers combined on a five-hitter.

Keller (0-1) didn’t allow a baserunner until a fourth-inning walk to Austin Meadows. He worked seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Skubal finished with seven strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings, and the only run he gave up was unearned. Andrew Benintendi reached with two out in the fourth on an error by shortstop Harold Castro, and Carlos Santana then singled to drive in Perez.

“He came in and established himself in the strike zone, which got them in swing mode, and then he’s got the nasty slider,” Hinch said of his starter. “There’s just a lot to like with the way he attacked the hitters. He made some really big pitches.”

Tigers: Optioned RHP Elvin Rodriguez to Triple-A Toledo. RHP Wily Peralta’s contract will be purchased from Toledo.

Liberal Redskins defeated the Great Bend Lady Panthers 7-2 Thursday
at Cavanaugh Field.


Great Bend drops to 2-5 overall and 0-4 in league play. Liberal
improved to 3-3 on the season with their second win of the season
against the Lady Panthers. The Redskins are 2-1 in the Western
Athletic Conference.


Great Bend's next action comes Tuesday at Garden City.

Liberal Girls defeat Great Bend 7-2

Facing its second straight ranked conference opponent, the 6th ranked Barton Community College men's tennis team knocked at the upset door but were turned away by the top ranked Tigers of Cowley College 6-3 on a windy Wednesday afternoon at Great Bend's Shannon Schartz Tennis Courts.

The Tigers took a 2-1 lead after doubles action then pulled out a pair of three set victories to hold off Barton to win four of the six singles matchups.

Barton's No. 2 tandem of James Kaoma and Barnabas Kalaba earned the Cougars' lone doubles victory knocking off the Cowley's Boruch Skierkier and Gaston Erhardt 8-5. The Tigers got revenge in singles play as the four matched up against each other again. Skierkier, ranked 2nd in the latest poll, prevailed 6-1, 6-4, in the No. 2 slot while Erhardt prevailed in three sets of the No. 4 slot over Kalaba. Down after a 7-5 result, the 13th ranked Tiger turned back Kalaba's upset bid in taking the final two sets 6-1 and 6-4.

Tsholofelo Tsiang pulled the upset of the afternoon in the No. 6 singles match, winning 6-4 and 9-7 in the tiebreak to knock off 24th ranked Taiyo Hirano.

No. 3 position player Eduardo Morais picked up the other Barton singles victories, also winning in tiebreak for straight set win by defeating Hanamichi Carvajal 6-2 and 8-7.

Barton nearly split the singles matches as the marathon match of the day came in the No. 5 flight. Samyak Bajracharya and the Tigers' Andoni Garmendia trading big margin sets, Bajracharya winning the first 6-0 with Garmendia forcing the third with a 6-1 win. Battling point for point in the final frame, Bajracharya's couldn't finish off mulitple match point opportunities as Garmendia rallied with three straight points to win 14-12.

Now 1-1 in conference play after a win over 11th ranked Pratt and the loss to the top ranked Tigers, next on the schedule is Barton's third straight ranked league opponent in Monday's hosting of 3rd ranked Seward County Community College. First serve slated for 1:00 p.m. at Schartz Courts.

6th ranked Barton Men's Tennis falls to top ranked Cowley College


Dodge City took both games of a double header from the Great Bend
Lady Panthers Thursday at the Great Bend Sports Complex.


In game one, Dodge City rallied from a 6-4 deficit with 2-runs in the
sixth and seventh innings to beat Great Bend 8-7. In game two, the
Red Demons scored in five of the seven innings to hand the Lady
Panthers an 8-2 setback.


Great Bend remains winless on the season as they fall to 0-8 overall
and 0-4 in the Western Athletic Conference.  Dodge City improves to
5-1 and 3-1.


The Lady Panthers travel to Hays Tuesday for a single game before
returning back to Great Bend Thursday to again face the Indians in a
double header at the Great Bend Sports Complex.

Lady Panthers tie for 1st at inaugural Jack Bowman Invitational

The Barton County Community College women's team were competitive Wednesday afternoon against the 4th ranked Tigers of Cowley College at Great Bend's Shannon Schartz Tennis Courts but had nothing on the scoreboard to show for it other than a 9-0 loss in the books.

Results were close in four of the nine conference matches on the windy afternoon, including the No. 1 doubles match from Angelina Gnezdilova and Clara Penido. The duo held a late lead in the match but the 5th ranked duo of Isid Hernandez and Ntokozo Zungu finishing strong for a 9-7 victory.

Zungu picked up her second win over Penido in the No. 2 singles matchup as the 14th ranked Tiger took the first set 6-4 in holding off a third set by taking the second in the tie break 9-7.

Azul Barrios pushed for an upset over 16th ranked Saara Kunakunova in the No. 4 slot, winning the first set 7-5 but dropping the second 6-2 before falling 10-7 in the third.

A step above in the No. 3 singles, Malena Hernandez battled Mariia Koroleva but fell to the 21st ranked player 6-4 and 6-3.

The Cougars will face its second straight nationally ranked opponent on Monday, hosting 5th ranked Seward County Community College in a 1:00 p.m. first serve at Schartz Courts.

Alex Rodgers rewrote the programs single season steals mark with four stolen bases on the afternoon and third baseman Henry Hayman drove in 10 of his 11 RBIs on the day in nightcap setting the programs most RBIs produced in a single game in recent memory leading the Barton Community College baseball team to a Jayhawk West split with the Seward County Saints on Thursday at Brent Gould Field in Liberal, KS.

After dropping the series opener 8-6 in the late innings, Hayman, Ricardo Sanchez and Rodgers played key roles in the back end combining for 19 of the 26 RBIs in a 27-2 seven-inning run rule victory.

Receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division I National Rankings, the Cougars maintained their hold on first place in the Jayhawk West at 16-6 and 29-11 overall with the Saints sitting at 5-13 in league play and 12-28 on the season.

The series will shift locations on Saturday with the first of the twinbill scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch from Lawson-Biggs Field.
