KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eric Haase hit two solo homers, Jeimer Candelario had a three-run shot and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 10-2 on Friday night.

Haase opened the second inning by blasting Daniel Lynch’s second pitch 444 feet to the seats above the left-field fountains for his seventh consecutive hit.

“I’ve really tried to shorten up my swing, try to still stay powerful, but in a little shorter window,” Haase said.

One out later, Candelario hammered his team-leading 13th homer of the season 445 feet deep to left for a 4-0 lead.

“It was a great swing,” Candelario said. “Short and quick to the ball. When you hit the ball on the barrel, good things happen.”

Haase added another shot to left-center in the sixth, his 12th homer of the year and fifth career multi-homer game. He added a two-out RBI double in the eighth.

“Obviously, he’s living right, with the bloop hit and the two homers,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “We’ve seen him get hot like this before and there’s a lot of damage that comes with it.”

Kansas City-area product Joey Wentz (1-1), who was recalled from Toledo on Thursday, allowed only a pair of two-out hits in 6 2/3 shutout innings for his first major league victory. Wentz struck out five with one walk.

“He looked extremely confident today and that’s how he was throwing the baseball,” Haase said. “He was filling up the zone with all his pitches. He kind of just had his way. He was able to do different things with the ball and get big outs.”

“Definitely cool.” Wentz said. “First major league win, obviously special anywhere, but probably a little more special to have a lot of my family, a lot of my friends here to watch. My win comes on a very good night for the whole team, which was also very good.”

Wentz estimated 40 to 50 of his family and friends were in the crowd behind the Tigers dugout.

“I thought the ovation he got coming off the field was so awesome,” Hinch said. “I told him it’s pretty awesome to come out and pitch in front of your family and friends. Enjoy this walk because it doesn’t happen very often, especially on the road.”

“It was really cool,” Wentz said. “When A.J. came out he said you’re going to walk off in front of all your family and friends, which was special for me.”

Candelario, Haase and Spencer Torkelson each had three hits as Detroit out-hit Kansas City 17-6. The Tigers had multiple baserunners in every inning except the first and seventh.

Lynch (4-10) allowed six runs on 10 hits, recording 11 outs. He has won just one of his last 11 starts.

Tigers IF Jonathan Schoop was reinstated from the IL. Royals 1B Vinnie Pasquantino was reinstated from the IL.

Detroit recalled RHP Joey Wentz from Class AAA Toledo, and optioned IF Josh Lester and RHP Luis Castillo to Toledo. Kansas City optioned OF Brent Rooker to Class AAA Omaha.

Eric Haase homers twice, Tigers beat Royals 10-2

The competition in Class 5A has been especially tough for runners over the past two decades. St. Thomas Aquinas has won the last eight 5A state cross country championships, and last October, two Aquinas runners led the state field before heading on to NCAA Div. I schools.

Right behind them was Great Bend's Kaiden Esfeld. Logan Seger won last year's title in 15:39, followed by teammate Ashton Higgerson in 15:51. Esfeld, in 15:54, was the only other 5A runner to crack 16 minutes at state. Now a senior, Esfeld is the de facto front runner for this year's 5A championship. He opened the season strong on Sept. 1 by setting the course record at Lake Barton.

"I know it will probably be a good battle with some of the other guys up there with me," Esfeld said, "but I do consider myself one of the top ones to be up there with them."

Esfeld set the Lake Barton record in 16:09.6, 33 seconds ahead of Garden City's silver medalist Devin Chappel, who ran fourth at the 6A state cross country meet last October. 

Not that the wins come easy. Esfeld said there were a lot of early morning practices this summer, and he's changed his diet to maximize endurance. By the end of the summer, he was running 50-70 miles a week in preparation for the season.

"Training-wise, it's not as horrible as what it seems like after we get done," he said. "During it, it seems like a very painful thing, and sometimes it's one of the worst things we're doing. Really, I've gotten more used to the training style (Great Bend Coach Lyles) Lashley has, and I've kind of adapted my body to be able to take it pretty well."

Like many distance runners, Esfeld shows his versatility on the track each spring. As a sophomore, he swept the Western Athletic Conference in the 800, 1600, and 3200m races. Last May he repeated as the 800m champion but lost the 1600 and 3200m league titles to Chappel.

"The kid from Garden had beat him twice at the WAC track meet last year, so it was nice for him to avenge that loss," Lashley said.

Esfeld went on to win 5A regional titles in the 800m and 1600m runs, not competing in the 3200m race. A week later at the state meet in Wichita, with no Seger in the races for Aquinas, Esfeld placed fourth in the 1600m run and fell to ninth in the 800, missing the final state medal by just a quarter of a second. 

Now a senior and with many of the horses in front of him gone to graduation, Esfeld is on the short list of contenders for the Class 5A title this year. He set the course record in his first meet, running alone. His time will only improve as he runs against better competition.

"A lot of my races were running with someone and trying to take in that last 400 or 800 meters," he said. "I would have to say I enjoy those races more. It's a lot easier when you have someone to go back and forth with, pushing each other, compared to your having to push yourself and stay mentally strong throughout the whole race."

Kaiden got his start as a runner in middle school after watching his sister, McKenna, run for the Lady Panthers. She finished her prep cross country career with a 47th-place finish at the state meet in 2019. With no spring season in 2020, she ended her prep track career with state medals in the 800m run and 4x800m relay as a junior.

Following high school, Kaiden plans to study construction science management and run at a college to be determined.

Tigers Fall to Griffons in Home Opener

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Kliff Kingsbury was a fan of Patrick Mahomes before it became cool.

It was nearly 10 years ago that Kingsbury — who was trying to build his program at Texas Tech — ventured to East Texas and decided the little-known, unpolished Mahomes was his quarterback of the future.

“They were really the first and only,” Mahomes said. “I didn’t get recruited much. I got a couple other offers from small schools in Texas, but they're the ones that came down and saw me and talked to my family and believed in me.”

Turns out Kingsbury has a pretty good eye for talent.

Nearly a decade later, the mentor and student meet again in the NFL.

Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs travel to face Kingsbury's Arizona Cardinals in Sunday's season opener. The Chiefs are trying to make the AFC title game for a fifth straight season while the Cardinals want to get back to the playoffs for a second straight year.

Mahomes played three years for Kingsbury at Texas Tech, growing into an NFL-caliber quarterback. Now in his sixth season with Kansas City, he has already won an MVP and a Super Bowl.

While Kingsbury certainly boosted Mahomes' football career, the same could be said in reverse. Kingsbury's work with Mahomes helped the coach earn a reputation for being good with young quarterbacks, which is a big reason he was hired to take over the Cardinals and work with then-rookie quarterback Kyler Murray.

Murray isn't as accomplished as Mahomes, but he's still a two-time Pro Bowl selection. Kingsbury said the two aren't exactly alike, but they do share some traits that make them good quarterbacks.

“The ability to play off-schedule," Kingsbury said. “Pat’s not as fast, but he’s a little bit bigger, where Kyler is more quick-twitch and can really leave people when he takes off. I think the baseball background with the arm angles, being able to get the snap quick and getting it out in a quick release definitely plays into it for both of him.”

The Cardinals are trying to get off to a fast start for a second straight season. They started last year by winning seven straight and improved to 10-2 before fading down the stretch.

The Chiefs definitely provide a difficult test.

“When you got a guy like (Mahomes) across the field, you’ve got to be ready,” Murray said. "You’ve got to be ready to go. There’s going to be a lot of hype around the game. You get the prime-time spot, so I get it all, but at the end of the day we’ve got to execute.

The Chiefs have nine of their 10 draft picks on the 53-man roster, with the other player on their practice squad. Most are expected to play key roles this season, including first-round picks Trent McDuffie at cornerback and George Karlaftis at defensive end, both of whom could start Sunday.

WR Skyy Moore, a second-round choice, is expected to help replace the offense that departed when Tyreek Hill was traded to the Dolphins.

It's the Arizona debut for receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, who was acquired by the Cardinals in a draft day deal back in April.

Brown was a 1,000-yard receiver last season for the Baltimore Ravens. His production will be needed, especially during the season's first six games, because three-time All Pro DeAndre Hopkins will be out after his suspension for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy.

Brown and Murray played together at Oklahoma.

Hill set a slew of records during his time with Kansas City, and the Chiefs intend to replace his production with a committee approach.

Along with Moore, the Chiefs added former Steelers standout JuJu Smith-Schuster and ex-Packers wide receiver Marques-Valdez Scantling in free agency. They join Mecole Hardman, the top returning wide receiver, and tight end Travis Kelce, who remains one of the best pass-catching tight ends in the game.

The Cardinals will debut their new-look defense against the Chiefs, elevating several young players into more prominent roles. All eyes will be on linebackers Isaiah Simmons and Zaven Collins, who were taken with back-to-back first-round picks in 2020 and '21.

Both have had good moments during their short careers, but will now be asked to take on more prominent roles. Simmons will have play-calling responsibilities, relaying information from defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.

Since coming to the NFL, Kingsbury and Mahomes have never lost in Week 1.

Kingsbury's Cardinals have a 2-0-1 record since his arrival before the 2019 season. The Chiefs have won all four of the season openers Mahomes has started dating to 2018.

(AP) — Kliff Kingsbury was a fan of Patrick Mahomes before it became cool.It was nearly 10 years ago that Kingsbury — who was trying to build his program at Texas Tech — ventured to East Texas and decided the little-known, unpolished Mahomes was his quarterback of the future.“They were really the first and only,” Mahomes said. “I didn’t get recruited much. I got a couple other offers from small schools in Texas, but they're the ones that came down and saw me and talked to my family and believed in me.”Turns out Kingsbury has a pretty good eye for talent.Nearly a decade later, the mentor and student meet again in the NFL.Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs travel to face Kingsbury's Arizona Cardinals in Sunday's season opener. The Chiefs are trying to make the AFC title game for a fifth straight season while the Cardinals want to get back to the playoffs for a second straight year.Mahomes played three years for Kingsbury at Texas Tech, growing into an NFL-caliber quarterback. Now in his sixth season with Kansas City, he has already won an MVP and a Super Bowl.While Kingsbury certainly boosted Mahomes' football career, the same could be said in reverse. Kingsbury's work with Mahomes helped the coach earn a reputation for being good with young quarterbacks, which is a big reason he was hired to take over the Cardinals and work with then-rookie quarterback Kyler Murray.Murray isn't as accomplished as Mahomes, but he's still a two-time Pro Bowl selection. Kingsbury said the two aren't exactly alike, but they do share some traits that make them good quarterbacks.“The ability to play off-schedule," Kingsbury said. “Pat’s not as fast, but he’s a little bit bigger, where Kyler is more quick-twitch and can really leave people when he takes off. I think the baseball background with the arm angles, being able to get the snap quick and getting it out in a quick release definitely plays into it for both of him.”The Cardinals are trying to get off to a fast start for a second straight season. They started last year by winning seven straight and improved to 10-2 before fading down the stretch.The Chiefs definitely provide a difficult test.“When you got a guy like (Mahomes) across the field, you’ve got to be ready,” Murray said. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Every season without fail, when the Chiefs get a week off from their 17-game regular-season NFL grind, Kansas City coach Andy Reid gets asked to explain his 20-3 record when his teams are coming off a bye.

And every season without fail, Reid finds a way to answer the question without ever really answering it.

Turns out the same goes for his record in season openers.

The Chiefs head into their game at Arizona on Sunday having won seven consecutive openers, including three against teams that were destined for the playoffs and one that reached the Super Bowl. And overall, Reid is 8-1 since taking over the Chiefs before the 2013 season, including a perfect mark in five openers played on the road.

“I don't know,” Reid said Wednesday amid another round of verbal shoulder-shrugging. “I appreciate the question, but right now, I don't care about any of that. We just go execute and do the best we can this time of year.”

The reality is the Chiefs simply do that better than everybody else.

Take turnovers, which tend to pop up most among the unprepared. The Chiefs have not committed one in their last four openers, while their own defense has taken the ball away seven times over that span, and the last time they coughed it up — at New England in 2017 — they atoned for the miscue by piling up 537 yards of total offense.

In fact, the Chiefs are plus-6 in turnover margin in their nine openers under Reid, and that number would be even more remarkable if not for three turnovers in their opening loss in Tennessee to start the 2014 season.

Only two of their last seven season-opening wins have been by less than a touchdown.

It helps to have Patrick Mahomes under center.

The Chiefs quarterback has completed better than 71% of his passes in openers over the past four years, averaging more than 295 yards per game, and has thrown 13 touchdown passes without a single interception.

“We've put in the practice. We've put in the work,” Mahomes said, “and I'm excited to see these guys in game action. The preseason is one thing, but when you get to the regular season, you want to get out there and show what you can do.”

Everybody around the league has put in the work, though; all teams desire to start 1-0 every bit as much as the Chiefs.

So the question remains: What makes Reid and his bunch nearly unstoppable in Week 1?

“It's all about the preparation with Andy, year-in and year-out,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said. “Training camp is extremely tough and I think that translates to game week. The way he prepares us to be physically and mentally ready for when the season approaches, I think it's beneficial for us as a team.”

It probably doesn't feel like that in camp, when Reid insists the Chiefs uproot from their training base in Kansas City for three weeks of dorm life on a college campus. It's there that Reid and his lieutenants push their players through sweltering late-summer practices with a decidedly old-school mentality designed to foster comradery and toughness.

“Bonding becomes important and you bond when you've got to do something tough,” Reid said. “I know some of them were hurting but they got up and they pushed through. That foundation will pay off for them down the road here.”

NOTES: The Chiefs placed TE Blake Bell (hip) on injured reserve this week. Everyone else on the roster practiced Wednesday, including DE Carlos Dunlap (Achilles inflammation), WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee) and CB Rashad Fenton (groin). ... Chiefs aim to improve to 9-1 in openers under Andy Reid

Tajay Grant of the No. 12 Barton Community College men's soccer team has been tabbed the week three Division I KJCCC Player of the Week award.

Grant was a big contributor on the offensive side delivering a pair of game winning goals helping the Cougars to a perfect 3-0 week.

The sophomore started his week Wednesday providing net shakers on both shot attempts helping Barton open conference play with a 4-1 victory over Garden City Community College.

Stretching his point's streak to two straight games with an assist in Barton's 3-0 victory over Trinidad State College, Grant extended the stretch adding his second game winner and team leading seventh goal in the Cougars 2-0 victory at Otero College, capping a three goal and one assist week.

The sophomore striker becomes the second Cougar to earn conference honors joining Dennis Bottcher's week one Goalkeeper selection.

Grant and the Cougars will return to conference play Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. kick at No. 19 Dodge City Community College.

team found out Wednesday afternoon in dropping a 4-2 decision to
Dodge City Community College at Memorial Stadium.


Dropping its' third straight in the series and having its' three
match winning streak snapped, the Cougars drop to 1-1 in KJCCC play
and 6-2 on the season while Dodge City improves to 1-0 in conference
play and 5-1 overall. Barton will look to bounce back Saturday
afternoon at the Cougar Soccer Complex as they welcome in the Blue
Devils of Kansas City Kansas Community College in a 1:00 p.m. first
kick.

The 14th ranked
Barton Community College women's soccer team took to the conference
road Wednesday evening, returning from Dodge City with a 9-1 victory
at Dodge City Community College.

The victory improves

Cougar Men and Women split road matches

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez’s sacrifice fly in the ninth gave the Kansas City Royals a 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday night, avoiding a three-game sweep.

The Royals entered the ninth trailing 1-0, but Emmanuel Clase walked the first two batters he faced. MJ Melendez drove home Kyle Isbel with the tying run and Perez drove in Nicky Lopez with the game-winner.

The Guardians still lead the AL Central by two games over the Twins and White Sox

Scott Barlow (6-4) earned the win. Clase (2-4) took the loss. He blew his first save since May 9 and had converted 25 straight opportunities.

“He just lost the plate early and proved he’s human,” Cleveland manager Terry Francona said of Clase. “It’s been a long time since something like that has happened. He tried to fight his way back, but 1-0 is a hard way to win. We walked some other guys too and it finally ended up biting us.”

Zack Greinke allowed one run on six hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out two. He returned to the rotation after being on the Injured List since Aug. 24 with right forearm tightness.

“For them to be able to put together at-bats that they did, they made him work,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “We always talk about that. Just pass it on to the next guy. Trust the next guy to get the job done. That was a great job against a very difficult closer.”

Cleveland starter Cody Morris, making his second major league start, allowed two hits in the first and then retired nine straight batters on his way to four scoreless innings.

“That was much more what we were looking for,” Francona said. “He was able to use his changeup. Probably could have gone farther. I just thought that with the way the lineup was set up it was a good time to get him out. I thought he did very well.”

Morris was pleased with his effort, once he settled in.

“In the first inning I was still battling some nerves, but I feel like I settled in well,” Morris said. “I felt a lot more relaxed after I got out of that first inning. I felt more in tune and fluid.

“There’s always room for improvement. I haven’t reflected on the start yet, but I’m sure there are pitches I could have executed better.”

The Guardians scored first on an RBI single by Owen Miller. Oscar Gonzalez led off the fourth with a double to the wall in right center. He went to third on a groundout to first and scored when Miller blooped one to short center.

Gonzalez also doubled in the eighth, but was stranded at third. He had a game-winning double in the 10th inning of Monday’s Cleveland victory.

Guardians RHP Aaron Civale, who is on the Injured List with a right wrist strain, threw for the third straight day, increasing the intensity each day. He’ll throw a long-toss on Thursday and a bullpen on Friday, according to manager Terry Francona…RHP Zach Plesac, on the IL with a fracture of his fifth metacarpel bone on his right hand, had another exam, but Francona says there is no timetable for his return.

Both clubs will have Thursday off. The Guardians head to Minnesota for a three-game series with the second-place Twins Friday night. RHP Cal Quantrill (11-5, 3.55 ERA) will start for Cleveland while RHP Dylan Bundy (8-6, 4.34 ERA) will start for the Twins.

The Royals will host the Detroit Tigers for the first of three on Friday. The Tigers will start LHP Joey Wentz (0-1, 8.10 ERA). The Royals have not yet announced a starter.

The Great Bend High School volleyball team opened the season with a 1-1 showing against a pair of Western Athletic Conference rivals in Garden City and Liberal. Tuesday night things got a little easier with a road trip to another WAC school. The Lady Panthers handled Dodge City in a best-of-five match 25-12, 25-20, 25-10.

Senior Rylie Duvall paced the offense with 10 kills, followed by sophomore Kara Feist with seven. Cassie Ellegood and Valarie Luna combined for nine more spikes. Junior Sadie Spray dished up most of the assists with 28. Juniors Paige Thexton and Lauryn Davis served up three and two aces, respectively.

Defensively, the senior Luna did her thing up front with nine blocks, followed by four from Feist. Junior Macy Nachtical led a busy back row with 10 digs. Spray and Kyndall Blessing each added nine digs, Thexton finished with eight, and Luna had six.

The Lady Panthers take a 2-1 record into Saturday's tournament in Riley County.

Lady Panther volleyball team dominates in Dodge City

The smallest school at Tuesday's quad at the Shannon Schartz Courts in Great Bend ruled the day. Larned won the meet in Great Bend with 27 points, followed by the Lady Panthers with 19 points. Dodge City and Hays combined for 14 points.

Great Bend's Kaylin Wahlmeier and Larned's Abby Holt squared off in the title match at No. 1 singles. Wahlmeier defeated her first two opponents 6-1 and 6-3, and Holt cruised to a pair of 6-0 wins. Holt, a reigning state qualifier on the doubles side, completed a perfect day with a 6-0 win over Wahlmeier.

Great Bend's No. 1 doubles team of Samantha Mayers and Taylor Lashley finished their own big day at 3-0. After a 6-5 (7) battle against Hays to open, the girls beat Dodge City and Larned 6-4, 6-2, respectively. Larned's duo of Sarah Manry and Reese Watkins finished at 2-1 for second.

Larned and Great Bend again faced off for the No. 2 singles title. Larned's Ella McNett edged Lady Panther Lakyn Smith 6-5 (5) in the title match. The girls were otherwise dominant with 6-0 wins to open the day. Smith had to fight for a 6-4 win against Dodge City.

Larned's No. 2 doubles team of Arianna Hemken and Breanna Hemken went 3-0 by a combined 18-5 tally for the sweep in that bracket. Great Bend's team of Danica Strickland and Clarise Snapp got as close at 6-3 against Hays but finished the day at 0-3.

The smallest school at Tuesday's quad at the Shannon Schartz Courts in Great Bend ruled the day. Larned won the meet in Great Bend with 27 points, followed by the Lady Panthers with 19 points. Dodge City and Hays combined for 14 points.Great Bend's Kaylin Wahlmeier and Larned's Abby Holt squared off in the title match at No. 1 singles. Wahlmeier defeated her first two opponents 6-1 and 6-3, and Holt cruised to a pair of 6-0 wins. The Barton Community College volleyball team was knocked from the unbeaten Tuesday evening in Liberal as the 15th ranked Saints of Seward County Community College prevailed in straight sets 25-13, 27-25, and 25-21.

Dropping to 11-1 on the season, Barton next heads to Cloud County Community College on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. first serve. Seward County improves to 3-0 in league and 10-2 on the year.

Barton grabbed its only lead of the set on the match's initial point coming on a service error with the Saints taking the next five points. Following a Jada Davis block and Molly Norris kill, the Cougars would slice the deficit to three but it was as close as the opening set would be the rest of the way. The Saints methodically pulled away behind a pair of three-point stretches, outscoring the Cougars 14-5 for a 20-8 lead. A pair of Buse Kocakaya aces helped slice the deficit to nine before the Saints took five of the last seven points in wrapping up the set.

The Cougars again grabbed the first point to begin the second set, fell behind early then rallied with four straight to tie it at nine. The Saints answered with two straight then later added another trio of points forcing Barton's first timeout of the match trailing 14-10. Making a valiant comeback, Barton climbed back in it with five straight and despite Seward County using both their timeouts, the Cougars continued to roll getting help off the bench from Darby Smith then a Davis' attack putting the visitors up 23-22. A service error gave away the next point but Smith's attack gave the Cougars set point and with multiple chances to even the match, an eventual net violation and subsequent point gave Seward County the edge. Smith again came through on an attack to even the score but the Saints claimed the final pair of tallies in taking the 2-0 match lead.

Unlike the previous two sets, the third was tight early and stayed that way through ten ties until a late Seward County surge. Barton had trailed by four at one point before clawing back to tie it at nine but could never regain the lead as the teams would eventually be gridlocked for the final time ten points later at nineteen. Seward County surged ahead with three straight, was interrupted by a Kocakaya kill, before scoring three of the last four points to clinch the match.

Barton Volleyball knocked from unbeaten in conference opener at 15th ranked Seward County

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Shane Bieber pitched eight sharp innings, José Ramírez drove in two runs and the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 Tuesday night.

Bieber (9-8) allowed one run and four hits. He struck out seven and walked one.

“I didn’t think (Bieber) had his best curveball,” manager Terry Francona said. “But with his fastball and his cutter, he really was effective. Some of the balls they squared up were in the middle of the park, and this is a big park. So that helps, too.”

In his last eight starts, Bieber has 1.79 ERA (11 runs in 55 1/3 innings). He is now 5-0 in his career against the Royals.

Bieber said going out for the ninth was never up for discussion.

“You always want more,” he said, “but it was an easy decision.”

“I threw a lot of cutters,” he said. “The curveball got a little better as the game went along. I was still able to get a little swing and miss. I just tried to primarily land it for strikes.”

The Guardians moved 1 1/2 games of Minnesota, which was rained out and will play a doubleheader Wednesday at the New York Yankees.

The Royals lost their 82nd game, meaning they’ll have a losing record for the sixth straight season.

Salvador Perez hit his 20th home run for Kansas City, the sixth year he’s reached the mark. He is tied with Mike Sweeney on the team list for the second-most seasons with at least 20 — George Brett holds the franchise record with eight.

“He hit a fastball about six inches off the plate,” Bieber said. “He’s got to be the strongest man alive.”

James Karinchak pitched the ninth for his first save.

Kris Bubic (2-11) allowed three runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked one.

Ramírez hit a bases-loaded, two-run single in the third for a 2-0 lead. He has 108 RBIs this season.

Myles Straw’s RBI single in the seventh extended the Guardians’ lead. Cleveland added another run on a single by Owen Miller in the eighth.

“My stats stink,” Straw said, batting .202 after getting two hits. “But we’re playing great as a team. That’s what really matters. We’re here as a team and we’re trying to get to the playoffs and win a championship. It’s little things to help your team win.”

Royals: RHP Zack Greinke, on the injured list with right forearm tightness, will start Wednesday’s series finale. … 1B/DH Vinnie Pasquantino is nearing the end of his rehab assignment in Triple-A Omaha. “We’re hearing good things,” manager Mike Matheny said before the game. “He wants to be back here and we want him back here. And I'm excited to play a regional game. We played Stanford, we've played Mississippi State. To have a regional game for our fans and our players, I think it's really exciting. And it's really exciting for all our fans who saw Mizzou come in here for all those years.”What makes their reunion Saturday so intriguing is that the stakes happen to be exceptionally high.The Tigers, who are coming off a losing season, welcomed an influx of transfers that played well in a season-opening romp over Louisiana Tech, raising hopes that Eli Drinkwitz can finally break through in his third year in charge.“We ain’t done nothing. We’re 1-0, which is exactly what we want, but what happened last week — they don’t carry any of that over,” said Drinkwitz, who was a young quality control coach at Auburn the last time the Tigers and Wildcats met.“This is a whole new week with a new set of challenges,” Drinkwitz said. “They have a lot of really good players, and we’re on the road in a tough environment. We have to have a mature mindset.”The Wildcats welcomed back most of their key players, and the one they lost — quarterback Skyler Thompson — was replaced by prolific Nebraska transfer Adrian Martinez. The result was an as-expected 34-0 blowout of South Dakota last Saturday night, which built some momentum that Kansas State intends to carry into Saturday's showdown.It's not just the prospect of a 2-0 start that makes the game important, though.The Tigers and Wildcats keep tangling on the recruiting trail, especially when it comes to the Kansas City metro area, which sits smack-dab between the two campuses. And winning their long-awaited showdown will provide one of the programs some extra ammunition when it comes to swaying top prep prospects.“Our guys are pumped,” Martinez said. “We started talking about it after our win. We'll be ready for those guys.”The fact that Martinez already understands the ramifications of the old rivalry speaks volumes: He grew up in California, about as far from the Heartland as possible, and played the past four years for Nebraska in the Big Ten.The same goes for Kansas State safety Kobe Savage, who like Martinez arrived on campus earlier this year. He grew up in Texas and played two seasons of junior college football before joining the Wildcats yet already is well aware of the history that his new program shares with the one situated just across the border in Missouri.“I'm excited to be playing some SEC football. I'm going to treat Mizzou like they're Alabama,” Savage said. “I'm going to treat them like they're the best team in the conference. There's not going to be a drop-off from our game against South Dakota.“There's probably going to be more juice,” he added, "but it's not going to be anything less.”
