KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs could have two important parts of their offense back with guard Joe Thuney and wide receiver Kadarius Toney returning to practice Wednesday ahead of their trip to Denver.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said that everyone would practice in their first workout since blowing a late lead in Sunday's loss in Cincinnati. That includes Thuney, who did not play because of an ankle injury, and Toney, who was coming off his most productive game with Kansas City when a hamstring injury sidelined him most of the past three games.

“I'm going to let him get out there and work a little bit. We'll just see how he does,” Reid said of Toney, who arrived in a trade from the New York Giants, where similar injuries were a frequent issue for the 2021 first-round pick.

“We're not going to bring him back and have him hurt it again,” Reid said. “We'll see what we can do.”

As for Thuney, who is about as durable as they come, Reid said the big offensive lineman probably could have returned last week in Cincinnati, but chose to give him another week off in the hopes of avoiding any lingering issues.

“His thing was getting that final push,” Reid said. “He feels better this week than he did last week. He's made as much progress as he's had, I said, ‘Let’s give him a little more time.' That's where I was at the end of last week.”

Reid also said that wide receiver Mecole Hardman, who is eligible to come off injured reserve next week, is recovering nicely from his abdominal injury. Hardman has been running outside and put on some of the weight he lost while dealing with the problem, and there's a chance he could help Kansas City for the stretch run.

The Chiefs are tied with the Bills at 9-3 for the best record in the AFC, though Buffalo holds the head-to-head tiebreaker.

“The guys know where they're at. Nobody knows better than they do what's out front,” said Reid, whose team can clinch the AFC West with a win Sunday in Denver coupled with a loss by the Los Angeles Chargers.

“You don't have to stand up there and preach to them about that,” Reid continued. “They want to win games. That's the mentality of this team. They battled their hearts out Sunday and it didn't work out. We're back to it.”

In fact, Reid was peppered with questions Wednesday about bouncing back from the loss in Cincinnati — the third straight game this calendar year that the Bengals have beaten the Chiefs, including last season's AFC title game. And after the third or fourth question, Reid made it clear that his focus was off the Bengals and onto the Broncos.

The same goes for Patrick Mahomes, who will no doubt welcome Thuney and Toney back to the huddle.

“In this league,” he said, “you have to move on or you'll make one loss turn into two. You watch the tape on Monday and you get a sense of what you can do better, when you can take away that was positive, and you move onto next week.”

Mahomes has never lost to the Broncos in nine tries.

“We just really emphasize playing our division opponents,” he said, by way of an explanation. “That's what we work on all offseason. For us, the coaches do a great job of giving us great game plans and I just try to go out and execute them.”

(AP) — The Buffalo Bills’ top pass-rusher Von Miller will miss
the remainder of the season after having surgery to repair an injury
to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Coach Sean
McDermott says the ligament damage was discovered during a previously
scheduled exploratory surgery, which was conducted on Tuesday in
Texas. Miller has missed one game since being hurt in the first half
of a 28-25 win over Detroit on Thanksgiving. The Bills placed Miller
on injured reserve last week with the expectation he would be able to
return after initial tests showed no damage to the player’s ACL.

LOS ANGELES (AP) —
Coach Sean McVay says Baker Mayfield probably will be active for the
Los Angeles Rams’ game against the Raiders on Thursday night.
That's just two days after the Rams claimed the former No. 1 draft
pick off waivers from Carolina. McVay wouldn’t rule out the
possibility of Mayfield playing against Las Vegas, but the Rams coach
indicated it likely would happen only if John Wolford’s persistent

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — David N’Guessan scored 23 points to lead Kansas State to an 81-64 victory over Abilene Christian on Tuesday night.

N’Guessan made all nine of his field goals but was 4 of 11 from the line. Markquis Nowell added 15 points and matched a season high with 12 assists for Kansas State (8-1), which shot 31 of 53 (58.5%) from the field but was just 3 of 12 from distance and 16 of 29 (55%) from the line. Keyontae Johnson and Nae’Qwan Tomlin added 12 points apiece.

Nowell underhanded a pass off the backboard and a trailing Johnson slammed it home to cap a 27-15 run&nbsp;to open the second half as K-State built a 62-49 lead. Abilene Christian pulled within 11 points with 2:20 remaining but didn't get closer.

Tobias Cameron scored 14 points and Immanuel Allen added 11 for Abilene Christian (5-4).

ACU jumped out to a 14-point lead midway through the first half before Kansas State closed on a 21-6 run for a 35-34 edge at the break.

Kansas State concludes a three-game homestand on Sunday against Incarnate Word before a matchup with Nebraska on Dec. 17 at the Wildcat Classic in Kansas City, Mo.

Five school records
were rewritten, and 40 new personal best times were clocked as the
Barton Community College men's swimming team rode into the holiday
break with their best outing of the season at the Wheaton
Invitational held at the Lederhouse Natatorium in Wheaton, Illinois.

Battling the
eight-team field as the lone two-year program, the Cougars compiled a
third-place total of 528 in the 18-events scored. UW-Stevens College
claimed the team title with 987 points outlasting host school Wheaton
College's 604.5-point total.

Enzo Vogt da Silva,
Jethro Irvine and William McCabe posted sensational results over the
weekend as the trio combined for all five individual titles, one team
crown and all five new program records.

Vogt da Silva guided
the Barton scoring with a team high 57 points through three
individual and four team events. The sophomore long distance
specialist scooped the first of his pair of individual titles
rewriting his previous 500-yard freestyle school record with a
stoppage of 4:38.70 besting the 27-entry field. Vogt da Silva capped
his two-gold weekend taking the longest race in the 1650-yard
freestyle touching the wall in 16:54.92 for a new season best mark.

Irvine joined fellow
teammate Vogt da Silva as the other lone Cougar to claim multi event
titles in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. The
sophomore broke the first of his two records turning in a 44.96 in
the 100-yard freestyle while rewriting his prior program record top
time of 49.08 in the 100-yard butterfly concluding the weekend with
40 points.

Earning a top-three
finish in all three individual events, McCabe put a bow on the
individual record-setting weekend, earning the program record in the
200-yard freestyle. The freshman touched the wall in 1:41.21
rewriting Irvine's short lived program record set earlier in prelims
by 15-tenths of a second.

In the team events,
Barton's final record breaker came in the 800-yard freestyle with the
trio of Vogt da Silva, Irvine and McCabe teaming up with Dominik
Strba posting the top mark time of 6:55.41 outlasting the field of
nine.

The Cougars will
head into the holiday break having nearly two months off before
returning to the pool January 28th for the Nebraska duals taking on
Nebraska Wesleyan University and Coe College.

The Barton Community
College women's swimming team rode into the holiday break shattering
two school records and posting 14 new personal best times at the
Wheaton Invitational held at the Lederhouse Natatorium in Wheaton,
Illinois.

Competing as the
lone NJCAA program in the two-day event, the Lady Cougars compiled a
fifth best team score of 344-points over the 18-events. Claiming the
team title was host Wheaton College outlasting the field of eight
teams with a score of 761.5.

Dominique Cos led
the Barton swimmers obtaining a team high 43 points between a trio of
individual and pair of relay events. The sophomore produced a pair of
fourth place finishes in the 400-yard IM and 200-yard breaststroke
with the biggest impact coming in the 400-yard IM clocking a new
program best stoppage of 4:49.19.

Silvana Jacquez
Viveros produced the second record breaker on the weekend that was
washed ashore by 10 seconds breaking Fanny Courbot's 2019-2020
stoppage touching the wall in 2:13.82 earning a ninth-place finish in
the 200-yard backstroke.

Linda Franco
generated the second most points over the two-day event finishing
with 41 while posting the highest individual finish on the squad with
a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle clocking a time of
53.60.

In the relay events,
the Cougars highest finish came in the long distance 800-freestyle as
Olivia Kerr, Jacquez Viveros, Andrea Piedra Fernandez and Mikwena
Lierman generated a third-place finish in the field of nine with a
stoppage of 8:25.61.

Barton will head
into the holiday break having nearly two months off before returning
to the pool January 28th for the Nebraska duals taking on Nebraska
Wesleyan University and Coe College.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — With a rare fumble by Travis Kelce, a missed field-goal try by Harrison Butker and a woeful inability to pressure the quarterback on Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs squandered a chance to control the AFC playoff race down the stretch.

After losing their third straight game to the Bengals, blowing a fourth-quarter lead in a 27-24 defeat in Cincinnati, the Chiefs tumbled out of the top playoff position in the conference.

They are now 9-3 and tied atop the standings with Buffalo, which handed the Chiefs one of their losses and thus holds the tiebreaker with five games left to play.

Making things even more worrisome: The Bengals hold the tiebreaker over Kansas City, too. And they're tied with the Ravens and Dolphins at 8-4, just a game behind the Bills and Chiefs in what is suddenly a tight playoff race.

“They've beaten us three times in a row,” Chiefs running back Jerick McKinnon said, “so they obviously have our number right now. Looking at it and what we're going through, a lot of times it comes down to just doing what it takes — a minor mistake here and there, and it will come back to cost you.”

Such as when Kelce fumbled trying to gain unnecessary extra yardage while the Chiefs were clinging to a 24-20 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Or when Butker missed a 55-yard field goal well within his range with 3:24 to go that would have tied the game. Or any of the times the Chiefs failed to get to Joe Burrow, who was barely pressured much less sacked.

It was all an eerily similar script to the previous two meetings with the Bengals, when the Chiefs blew leads in a regular-season loss in Cincinnati in January and an overtime loss four weeks later in the AFC title game.

“They just have a well-put together team,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “You saw the offense, even though it has the playmakers, they'll take their time and kind of utilize the clock. Their defense changes up a lot of different coverages. They did a good job trying to take Travis away as much as possible and that's why you saw a lot of the other guys making catches. I feel like we executed at a high level ... (but) it wasn't high enough because we didn't win.”

In fact, the Chiefs have had a difficult time defeating both of their biggest rivals for AFC supremacy.

Along with three straight losses to the Bengals, the Chiefs have lost two of their past three against the Bills, including the 24-20 setback at Arrowhead Stadium earlier this season that is suddenly looming large in the playoff picture.

“It was a rematch of the AFC championship game and it lived up to it,” Chiefs safety Justin Reid said. “It isn't a good feeling right now, but the good news is we have a lot of football left to play in December, and I'm sure we're going to see those guys again come January.”

The run game has given the Kansas City offense some balance, and a good argument can be made that the Chiefs didn't utilize it enough Sunday. McKinnon carried eight times for 51 yards with a TD catch and Isiah Pacheco had 14 carries for 66 yards and a scoring run. All told, the Chiefs ran for 138 yards at 5.5 yards per carry; Mahomes was held to 223 yards on 27 attempts.

The Chiefs have turned the ball over at least once in seven straight games, the longest streak during Andy Reid's tenure. That includes two in the loss to Buffalo at the front end of the streak and one to Cincinnati on Sunday.

McKinnon might be the only player on the Kansas City sideline that could feel good about his play Sunday. He's been used primarily as a receiver out of the backfield, but he proved against the Bengals that he can run the ball, too.

The Chiefs defense took a big step back. It didn't matter whether they used three-man fronts, blitzes or some combination, they failed to put any pressure on Burrow, who was 25 of 31 for 286 yards and two scores.

Mahomes was hobbling around on a sore foot late in the game but said he was fine.

its win in Arrowhead Stadium earlier this season. The Chiefs also
have to worry about the Bengals, who have now beaten them three
straight times, including last season's AFC championship game.
Cincinnati is just a game behind the Bills and Chiefs and now it
holds a tiebreaker over Kansas City, too.

Tom Brady threw a pair of touchdown passes in the final three minutes
Monday night, helping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rally from a 13-point
deficit to beat the New Orleans Saints 17-16 and tighten their grip
on first place in the weak NFC South. The seven-time Super Bowl
champion tossed a one-yard TD pass to rookie Cade Otton, finishing a
91-yard drive to pull within 16-10 with exactly three minutes
remaining. He got the ball back with 2:29 to go, then won it with a
6-yard throw to another rookie, Rachaad White, with three seconds
left.

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell has promoted Nate Scheelhaase from
receivers coach to offensive coordinator. Scheelhaase replaces Tom
Manning. Manning was fired last week after the Cyclones finished at
the bottom of the Big 12 in scoring and total offense during a 4-8
season. Campbell called Scheelhaase one of the rising stars in
college football coaching. Campbell also announced the firing of
fifth-year offensive line coach Jeff Meyers.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP)
— Cincinnati has hired Louisville’s Scott Satterfield to be its
next football coach. Louisville was 7-5 this season under Satterfield
and earned a berth in the Fenway Bowl, where coincidentally it will
face Cincinnati. Satterfield replaces Luke Fickell, who recently left
to become coach at Wisconsin. Satterfield said he was honored to
become coach of the Bearcats and looked forward to continuing the
program’s winning tradition. Cincinnati joins the Big 12 Conference
next fall. Louisville announced that player development director
Deion Branch, a former Cardinals star and Super Bowl MVP with the
Patriots, will serve as interim coach for the bowl game.

SAN DIEGO (AP) —
The Philadelphia Phillies have landed Trea Turner, agreeing to a $300
million, 11-year contract with the dynamic shortstop. The deal
includes a no-trade clause, according to a person familiar with the
negotiations who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of
anonymity because there was no immediate announcement. Turner joins a
Philadelphia team that made it to the World Series this year before
losing to the Houston Astros. He also reunites with slugger Bryce
Harper after the two played together with the Washington Nationals
from 2015-18.

person familiar with the negotiations says Justin Verlander has
agreed to an $86.7 million, two-year contract with the New York Mets.
The deal reunites the AL Cy Young Award winner with Max Scherzer and
gives the Mets a high-profile replacement for Jacob deGrom. The deal
includes a vesting third-year option, according to a person who spoke
to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because there was
no announcement. Verlander leaves World Series champion Houston to
step in for deGrom, who agreed to a $185 million, five-year contract
with Texas last week. It also puts Verlander on the same team as
Scherzer after they played together with the Tigers from 2010-14.
Verlander turns 40 in February.

Georgia, Michigan, TCU and Ohio State were the top four in the final Associated Press college football poll of the regular season.

The Bulldogs (13-0) are No. 1 for the ninth straight week and 12th time this season in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank. Georgia received 62 first-place votes and Michigan (13-0) received the other one in the poll released Sunday.

T he final College Football Playoff rankings to set the four-team field for the national championship tournament was scheduled to be released later Sunday.

TCU (12-1) remained third, despite losing for the first time this season in the Big 12 title game on Saturday. The Horned Frogs lost in overtime to Kanas State.

The Buckeyes moved up a spot to No. 4, ahead of Alabama and Tennessee.

Kansas and Arkansas will meet in the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 28. This will mark the Jayhawks' first bowl appearance since the end of the 2008 season. Kansas started 5-0 and cracked the AP Top 25 this year. The Jayhawks' six wins are more than they had in the previous three seasons combined. Arkansas started 3-0 and reached No. 10 in the AP Top 25. This is Kansas' second appearance in the Liberty Bowl and first postseason trip since the Insight Bowl in December 2008. This is Arkansas' sixth trip to the Liberty Bowl.

Kansas returns to postseason, faces Arkansas in Liberty Bowl

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Alabama and newly crowned Big 12 champion Kansas State will meet for the first time at the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Eve.

The Crimson Tide (10-2, No. 5 CFP) is headed to the Sugar Bowl for the 17th time after narrowly missing out on the four-team College Football Playoff because of losses at Tennessee and LSU on the last play of each game.

“We had opportunities in both of those games but weren’t able to take advantage of it. I think our team learned a lot, you know, from that,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. “We played well as a team in the last three games. So, hopefully we can continue to build on that.”

Kansas State (10-3, No. 9 CFP) did its best to help Alabama's chances of a playoff berth by handing TCU its first loss of the season in overtime of Saturday's Big 12 title game in Dallas.

“I don’t think a lot of people thought that K-State would be in that Big 12 championship game, let alone win it,” Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said.

“We’re looking forward to coming to New Orleans,” Klieman added. ”I know our guys, when they saw Alabama come up, they were excited about getting a chance to play one of the traditional powers for decades in college football. Especially in the time that Coach Saban has been there."

The close loss in a title game for TCU was not enough to persuade the College Football Playoff selection committee to drop the Horned Frogs out of the top four in its rankings. TCU wound up as the third seed and Ohio State, whose lone loss came against unbeaten Michigan, is the fourth seed and will meet top-seeded Georgia in the Peach Bowl.

No. 2 seed Michigan will play TCU in the Fiesta Bowl.

Alabama has played in 75 postseason games overall and is 9-7 at the Sugar Bowl. Kansas State is heading to the Sugar Bowl for the first time.

The Sugar Bowl could be the final college game for Alabama quarterback and 2021 Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young, if he plays at all. Young is eligible for the 2023 NFL draft and might even be the top player selected. He passed for 3,007 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Like Young, Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson also is expected to enter the draft, putting his playing status in doubt.

Saban said he wasn't sure whether Young and Anderson would suit up in New Orleans or skip the game to prepare for the draft.

“They participated in the workouts that we had last week,” Saban said. “We’ll get an opportunity to talk to them at some point in time this week.

“This is still a tremendous opportunity to play against a really, really good team. And we have a lot to prove as a team in terms of who we are and what’s the legacy of this team, how are we going to be remembered,” Saban said. “So, it’s each guy’s choice as to what they do. We — and they — have a lot of choices now.”

Kansas State has been led this season offensively by running back Deuce Vaughn, who has rushed for 1,425 yards and eight touchdowns.

Dual-threat quarterback Adrian Martinez passed for 1,261 yards and six TDs while rushing for 615 yards and 10 scores.

Since 2014, in seasons when the Sugar Bowl was not incorporated into the College Football Playoff as a semifinal, it has taken the top available teams outside the top four of the CFP rankings.

In those six non-CFP games, the Big 12 participant has won four times.

Overall, this will be the 17th Sugar Bowl meeting between teams that are current Big 12 or SEC members.

The first meeting came in the second Sugar Bowl in 1936 when TCU and Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh held off LSU.

The Big 12 holds a 10-6 advantage all-time.

Alabama has played in the Sugar Bowl four times since the 2008 season, losing all three times when the game was not part of the national championship structure.

Sugar Bowl pits Alabama vs. Kansas State for first time

CINCINNATI (AP) — Joe Burrow got a huge assist from his defense in another riveting duel with Patrick Mahomes.

With the Chiefs leading Burrow's Bengals 24-20 early in in the fourth quarter on Sunday, Mahomes hooked up with Travis Kelce, who rumbled for a big gain. But while Bengals linebacker Germaine Pratt and other defenders were wrestling Kelce to the ground, Pratt forced the ball free and recovered the ensuing fumble.

Burrow took it from there, completing 6 of 7 passes during a 53-yard drive that he finished with a go-ahead 8-yard touchdown to backup running back Chris Evans. The Bengals' defense held Kansas City scoreless from there and Burrow closed out a 27-24 victory over the Chiefs.

“He’s playing at an MVP level – absolutely,” Bengals coach Zac Taylor said. "He gives us a lot of confidence.”

The Bengals (8-4) have won four straight overall and their last three meetings with Kansas City (9-3) — all in the same calendar year. Cincinnati won on Jan. 2 to clinch the AFC North title. Four weeks later, the Bengals beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in overtime — also by a 27-24 score — to reach the Super Bowl for the first time in 33 years.

This time, Burrow finished 25 of 31 with two touchdowns and ran in for a 4-yard score to get the Bengals on the board in the first quarter. He concluded his day by converting two third downs on passes to Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, allowing the Bengals to run out the clock.

“We left some points on the field, but we still find a way to win,” Burrow said. “We’ve still got five weeks left. Let’s keep this train rolling. This team knows what it takes to win these games. We’ve been there. It’s December. It’s time to separate ourselves.”

Cincinnati running back Samaje Perine, subbing again for Joe Mixon (concussion), ran for a season-high 106 yards on 21 tough carries.

Mahomes was 16 for 27 for 223 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score. But the Chiefs fell short on their final possession when Joseph Ossai sacked Mahomes on third-and-3 from the Bengals 33, and Harrison Butker missed a 55-yard field goal wide right.

“We started off slow, we got back in the game, into the flow of things and (then) we had a turnover late and a missed kick,” Mahomes said. “In the fourth quarter, those are the things that kind of bite you at the end.”

Cincinnati led for the entire the first half and took a 14-10 advantage into the locker room.

Mahomes led Kansas City on two methodical third-quarter drives that ended in touchdowns — an 8-yard-run by Isiah Pacheco and a 3-yard scramble by the multi-talented QB — while the Bengals had to settle for a pair of field goals. That gave the Chiefs a 24-20 lead that held until the turnover and subsequent Cincinnati TD.

Chase, in his return after missing four games with a hip injury, had seven receptions for 97 yards. He was also flagged for taunting after getting in the face of Chiefs defenders after Higgins caught a 12-yard TD pass to push Cincinnati's first-half lead to 14-3.

“I was surprised at how quickly he was looking like the same Ja’Marr, even in practice last week," Taylor said. "He’s a freak.”

Bengals TE Hayden Hurst suffered a right calf injury in the first half and was ruled out. ... Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Mahomes “hurt his foot there at the end of the game, but he's going to be OK.”

Reid defended his decision to attempt a long field goal that would have tied the game instead of keeping Mahomes on the field.

“If I don't think he's going to make that, I'm not going to do it,” Reid said. “It's pretty simple. I feel like (Butker) has been in a good place, and we just have to execute it better all the way around. It really shouldn't come down to that, but it did.”

Kansas State (7-1) took a 47-45 lead on Nae'Qwan Tomlin's layup and Marquis Nowell answered Ballard's free throw with a bucket to extend the Wildcats' lead to three.Ballard sank two free throws, Craig Porter Jr. buried a jumper and Wichita State (4-4) grabbed a 50-49 lead with 2:13 to go. Nowell sank 1 of 2 free throws to knot the score, then stole the ball and sank a 3-pointer with an assist from Desi Sills to put K-State up 53-50 with 54 seconds left. The Shockers turned the ball over on their final two possessions.Tomlin finished with 14 points and six rebounds for K-State. Nowell scored 11 with seven assists.Porter topped the Shockers with 11 points.Kansas State, under first-year coach Jerome Tang, opened the season with six straight wins before losing by 12 to Butler last time out. It was the Wildcats' longest win streak since 2018.The Wildcats have won four straight over the Shockers and lead the all-time series 22-11, including a 15-2 mark on their home floor. The two in-state rivals played last year — a 65-59 Wildcats victory — after a 20-year hiatus in the series.
