WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Jaron Pierre Jr. led Wichita State past Longwood on Saturday night with 20 points off of the bench in an 81-63 victory.

Pierre shot 8 for 17, including 3 for 8 from beyond the arc for the Shockers (5-4). Jaykwon Walton added 18 points while going 7 of 8 (3 for 4 from distance), and he also had eight rebounds. Craig Porter Jr. was 4 of 6 shooting and 7 of 7 from the free throw line to finish with 16 points.

Nate Lliteras led the Lancers (5-5) in scoring, finishing with 11 points. Walyn Napper added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists for Longwood. Jesper Granlund also had nine points.

Walton scored 15 points in the second half to help lead the way as Wichita State went on to secure a victory, outscoring Longwood by four points in the second half.

Twenty-nine schools, many of the state's top girl wrestlers. And, naturally, Christmas trees and music. Great Bend High School hosted its inaugural Christmas Clash Friday and Saturday, a rare two-day wrestling event in girls' wrestling.

"We want to make this a premiere event every year, which is why we named it the Christmas Clash," said Great Bend coach Nathan Broeckelman. "It's excited to see all these girls come in to battle it out and prepare for the upcoming season."

Despite a loaded field, Western Athletic Conference teams took the top-four spots. Reigning 6-5A state champion and top-ranked Dodge City cruised with 242 points. Garden City scored 218 points for second, followed by Hays with 168 points to edge out the Lady Panthers by a single point. Hoisington placed seventh with 141 points.

Two Lady Panther wrestlers made the finals. Third-ranked junior Daizy Gomez lost to second-ranked Ariana De La Rosa in the consolation finals at state last season, and again in dual action Thursday night. She nearly turned the page Saturday, getting a takedown with 40 seconds remaining to take a lead. De La Rosa responded with her own takedown to take the 125-pound title with a 7-3 decision.

Senior Katie Kuhlman took a perfect record into the finals at 130 pounds. In a high-energy match, she lost by fall to Hoisington junior Daijah Jones midway through the second period. 

Haylee Holinde won a 6-5 decision against Olathe West to secure third place at 235 pounds. Kirra Stevens won by fall in her first match at 170 pounds. She ended up fourth in a tough bracket that featured highly-ranked wrestlers from both classifications.

Paige Sanders placed seventh at 155 pounds. Freshman Kaylea McMullen placed fifth in the 120-pound bracket that included two of the top-four ranked 6-5A wrestlers. Natalee Daniels placed ninth in one of the most difficult brackets at 190 pounds. That group featured two top-ranked wrestlers.

Hannah Crathone finished eighth in a loaded 115-pound bracket that featured a top-ranked wrestler. Braelynn Turner placed 12th in the same 125-pound bracket where Gomez finished second. Karley Stuckey finished 13th in a tough 110-pound bracket that featured a reigning Class 4-1A state champion and a reigning Class 6-5A state runner up who met in the finals. 

The 140-pound bracket was loaded with Great Bend wrestlers. Jaydon Davis led the trio in 12th place, followed by Josie Blevins in 13th, and Raegen Ketch in 14th. That championship featured a top-ranked wrestler against a two-time state placer. Danica Cline followed suit with a 13th-place finish at 145 pounds.

Lady Panthers place fourth in loaded Christmas Clash

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Kevin McCullar Jr. heard the boos and catcalls from the Missouri student section hours before tipoff, when Kansas first emerged from the tunnel for pregame warmups. The noise rose to an ear-splitting roar as the bitter rivals began their first showdown in Columbia in more than a decade.

All that McCullar heard by the end was the haunting refrain of “Rock Chalk Jayhawk.”

McCullar finished with 21 points, Jalen Wilson had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and the sixth-ranked Jayhawks pounded their old Big 12 foe 95-67 on Saturday night in just their second meeting since the Tigers bolted for the SEC.

“The atmosphere was electric tonight,” McCullar said. “We just tried to embrace the environment.”

KJ Adams Jr. also had a career-high 19 points and Gradey Dick scored 16 for the Jayhawks (9-1), who romped past the Tigers last year in Lawrence but were making their first visit to Columbia since Feb. 4, 2012, the year Missouri switched conferences.

The fevered pitch for the latest showdown of century-old rivals evaporated in the opening minutes, though, when Kansas raced to a 30-16 lead. It swelled to 26 points early in the second half before the Jayhawks cruised to the finish.

“In all honesty, you want to be in environments where people care,” Kansas coach Bill Self said, “and it was obviously a caring environment today. The crowd was great. And I thought our guys really did a good job of not letting them go on runs that could have really gotten the crowd more into the game.”

D'Moi Hodge and Nick Honor scored 15 apiece to lead the Tigers (9-1), who had been one of 10 remaining unbeatens in Division I men's basketball at the start of the day. Noah Carter finished with 12 points and DeAndre Gholston had 11.

“There’s a reason why Kansas is top 10 in the country. There’s a reason why Bill Self is a Hall of Fame coach,” Tigers counterpart Dennis Gates said. “I thought we showed and displayed different things throughout the game where we almost had runs going, but something — a missed free throw or a missed 3 — kind of took the wind out of our sails.”

There are rivalries in college basketball and then there is Kansas-Missouri, marked by a pervasive hatred predating James Naismith and his peach baskets to actual guerrilla warfare along their border in the years leading up to the Civil War.

One fan walking through the concourse of Mizzou Arena on Saturday even wore a hat that read “Remember Quantrill” — as in the Confederate sympathizer William Quantrill, who led a massacre in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1863.

So it wasn't surprising that the smoke billowing out of the tunnel leading to the Tigers' locker room seemed a little thicker Saturday night. The student section and their notorious bunch known as “the Antlers” a little more vulgar. And the roars of their first sellout crowd this season just a little bit louder.

It didn't take long for the Jayhawks to silence all of them.

After missing their first two shots, they proceeded to hit 11 straight, including five by Dick. Two of his were effortless 3-pointers, the second giving Kansas a 28-14 lead and prompting Gates to finally call a timeout.

“I think that gets us jacked up to play,” Adams said of the atmosphere. “It really set a tone for us.”

Not even the return of Hall of Fame basketball coach Norm Stewart nor football coach Gary Pinkel could shake Missouri from its malaise. The Tigers missed 16 of their first 22 shots, allowing Kansas to establish a 36-17 lead — to the chagrin of three-time Cy Young Award winner and former Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer, who also was in the crowd.

“We just didn't execute how we planned,” Honor said.

Dick and Adams had 15 points apiece by halftime as Kansas took a 50-33 lead to the locker room.

Nothing changed there: Missouri turned the ball over on four of its first six second-half possessions, and the Jayhawks turned the miscues into nine straight points. And despite a second-half slump that allowed Missouri to put together an 11-2 run, the Jayhawks were never seriously threatened down the stretch.

“Every segment of the game is a learning experience to get better. You have to learn to win on the road,” Self said, “and I thought we did a pretty good job with that tonight."

Kansas got sloppy midway through the second half but otherwise was dominant on both ends of the floor. The Jayhawks were 10 of 22 from the 3-point arc, caused 21 turnovers and had 24 assists to just eight for the Tigers.

Missouri has played at a breakneck pace this season, scoring a nation-leading 23.9% of its points on fast breaks. But the more athletic Jayhawks outran the Tigers on Saturday night, outscoring them 22-10 in transition.

The Jayhawks begin a three-game homestand against No. 14 Indiana next Saturday.

The Tigers play Central Florida in the Orange Bowl Classic next Saturday in Sunrise, Florida.

LUSAIL, Qatar (AP) — Grant Wahl, one of the most well-known soccer writers in the United States, died early Saturday while covering the World Cup match between Argentina and the Netherlands. He was 48.

U.S. media seated near him said Wahl fell back in his seat in a section of Lusail Stadium reserved for journalists during extra time of the game, and reporters adjacent to him called for assistance.

Emergency services workers responded very quickly, treated him for 20 or 30 minutes on the spot and then took him out on a stretcher, said Keir Radnedge, a veteran British sports journalist who was working nearby at the time.

The World Cup organizing committee said he was taken to Doha's Hamad General Hospital, but it did not state a cause of death. “We are in touch with the US Embassy and relevant local authorities to ensure the process of repatriating the body is in accordance with the family’s wishes,” it said in a statement.

Wahl, who wrote for Sports Illustrated for a decade then started his own website, was a major voice in introducing professional soccer to an American public more used to seeing the sport as a school-level game. He also brought a critical eye to the organizational bodies of the international sport.

He “really helped put soccer on the mainstream sports map in the States,” Radnedge said.

“Grant had a strong moral compass, on where sports should be and how sport ... should help set standards for people,” he said. “There was never any doubt that Grant was on the side of the good guys in wanting soccer to make the best of itself.”

Wahl was covering his eighth World Cup. He wrote Monday on his website that he had&nbsp;<a href="https://grantwahl.substack.com/p/world-cup-daily-day-22">visited a medical clinic</a>&nbsp;while in Qatar.

“My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you,” Wahl wrote. “What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort.”

Wahl wrote that he tested negative for COVID-19 and sought treatment for his symptoms.

“I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I’m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno,” he wrote.

Wahl tweeted on Wednesday that he had celebrated his birthday that day.

“We could always count on Grant to deliver insightful and entertaining stories about our game, and its major protagonists,” the U.S. Soccer Federation said in a statement. “Grant’s belief in the power of the game to advance human rights was, and will remain, an inspiration to all. Grant made soccer his life’s work, and we are devastated that he and his brilliant writing will no longer be with us.”

Wahl's wife, Dr. Celine Gounder, tweeted that she was thankful for the support of her husband’s “soccer family” and friends who had reached out.

“&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/celinegounder/status/1601404727014879232?s=20&amp;t=Wpv4uCqNxr74RB-kYxrn-w">I’m in complete shock</a>,” wrote Gounder, who is an associate professor at New York University School of Medicine, an attending physician at Bellevue Hospital Center and a CBS News contributor.

U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/StateDeptSpox/status/1601419687619067904">in a tweet</a>&nbsp;that American officials were in touch with Qatari authorities “to see to it that his family’s wishes are fulfilled as expeditiously as possible."

<a href="https://grantwahl.substack.com/p/an-unexpected-detention-by-world">Wahl wore a rainbow T-shirt in support of LGBTQ rights to the United States' World Cup opener against Wales on Nov. 21</a>&nbsp;and wrote that security refused him entry and told him to remove the shirt. Gay and lesbian sex is criminalized in Qatar, a conservative Muslim emirate.

Wahl wrote he was detained for 25 minutes at Ahmed Bin Ali stadium in Al Rayyan, then was let go by a security commander. Wahl said FIFA apologized to him.

Among Wahl’s work before he began covering soccer exclusively was&nbsp;<a href="https://vault.si.com/vault/2002/02/18/ahead-of-his-class-ohio-high-school-junior-lebron-james-is-so-good-that-hes-already-being-mentioned-as-the-heir-to-air-jordan">a Sports Illustrated cover story</a>&nbsp;about LeBron James in 2002, when James was a junior at St. Vincent-St. Mary High in Akron, Ohio.

“He was always pretty cool to be around. He spent a lot of time in my hometown of Akron,” James said in Philadelphia after the Los Angeles Lakers lost in overtime to the 76ers. “Any time his name would come up, I’ll always think back to me as a teenager having Grant in our building down at St. V’s. It’s a tragic loss. It’s unfortunate to lose someone as great as he was. I wish his family the best. May he rest in paradise.”

A voter at times in FIFA’s annual awards, Wahl was among 82 journalists honored last week by FIFA and the international sports press association AIPS for attending eight or more World Cups.

“His love for football was immense and his reporting will be missed by all who follow the global game,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said.

Wahl graduated from Princeton in 1996 and worked for Sports Illustrated from 1996 to 2021, known primarily for his coverage of soccer and college basketball. He then launched his own website.

Wahl also worked for Fox Sports from 2012-19.

His death at the World Cup left fellow journalists covering the games stunned.

“You come to a World Cup as a journalist to work, to share the stresses, the pressures but also the enjoyments and the fascination of it — and to share that with your readers, your listeners, your viewers. That’s what Grant was doing, that’s what he enjoyed doing. Everybody recognized that enthusiasm in him,” Radnedge said.

“So for him to not be with us anymore at such a young age, that’s an immense shock.”

Nina Norshie of the 15th ranked Barton Community College women's soccer team has been named to the first team of the 2022 NJCAA Division I All-America selections.

Norshie's award is the third straight and fourth All-America award winner for Head Coach Ousmane Camara following Seulgi Lee's consecutive national honors. Norshie also joins Lee as the just the program's second defender to earn the award, the fourth 1st team selection, the fifth Lady Cougar recipient and the program's sixth overall All-America award.

Posting consecutive hat tricks to begin the season, Norshie followed with a seven goal outburst tying Great Bend native Yesenia Garcia's 2007 program high single game performance.

Scoring three or more goals nine times during the season, Norshie's 43 nationally leading total posted the program's 2nd best single season accumulation and jumped into the 4th placing on the all-time career list.

Distributing a team third best 8 assists, Norshie totaled a nation leading 94 points for the program's 3rd best single season achievement while also checking in at the 7th spot of the career chart.

In addition to the seven nation leading game winning goals and a constant offensive threat on the field, the freshman from Accra, Ghana, also dropped back to the defensive line when the situation warranted which limited her attacks but proved pivotal in Barton's defensive successes leading to ten team shutouts including two in post-season action.

The Great Bend High School wrestlers returned to dual
action Thursday in Dodge City. The Lady Panthers came up just shy in a bid to
unseat top-ranked Dodge City (5-6A) in a 42-36 loss. The Great Bend boys lost
54-19 to the No. 9 Red Demons (6A).

In the girls' battle, Dodge City picked up 18 points via three
open weights, but gave back six points with an open heavyweight bracket of
their own. Just two matches went the distance on the evening.

Hannah Crathorne (115 pounds), Kaylea McMullen (120), Katie
Kuhlman (130), Paige Sanders (155), and Kirra Stevens (170) all pinned their
opponents.

Dodge City’s second-ranked junior Ariana De La Rosa
finished just ahead of Lady Panther junior Daizy Gomez in third place at state
last year. De La Rosa won a 5-3 decision against third-ranked Gomez Thursday. Great Bend's Natalee Daniels also went the distance against third-ranked Jolette Almaraz in
a 7-0 loss at 190 pounds.

Karley Stukey (110), Josie Blevins (140), and Jaydon
Davis (145) were pinned in their matches.

Panther boys win four matches Junior Cooper Liles has moved to No. 3 in the Class 5A
rankings at 157 pounds. He pinned his opponent, and Triston Tomlinson also won
by fall at 106 pounds for 12 of the 19 Panther points. Keyven Schroeder picked
up a 10-2 major decision at 215 pounds, and fifth-ranked Jace Schartz won an
8-3 decision at 150 pounds.

The 175-pound bracket featured a pair of state contenders
in Great Bend’s second-ranked Matthew Johnson and Dodge City’s top-ranked Luke
Barker. The reigning 6A champion Barker defeated Johnson by tech fall 20-4.

Sixth-ranked Skyler McMullen went the distance in a 9-7
loss at 138 pounds. Trenton Kern also hung tough against No. 2 Roman Loya in a
4-2 loss at 190 pounds. Kaiden Hoffman lost an 11-2 major decision at 132
pounds.

Ambrose Kramer (120), Hayden Kelly (126), Stephen
Calderwood (144), Michael Montoya (165), and Brody Schnoebelen (285) all lost
their matches by fall.

Lady Panther wrestlers nearly beat top-ranked Dodge City; boys fall

A local cross country course record and another state
medal. Those were just two of Great Bend High School senior Kaiden Esfeld’s
accomplishments as a cross country runner this fall. Earlier this week, Esfeld
signed a letter of intent to continue his running career at Fort Hays State
University.

Esfeld ran third at the 2021 Class 5A State Cross Country
Championships, and was among the favorites for a state title this year. Esfeld,
winner of back-to-back regional meets as a sophomore and junior, finished
second at this year’s regional, losing his Lake Barton course record in the process. He
went on to finish 11th at state for another medal.

The senior is not quite finished as a runner at GBHS,
however. As a sophomore, he won three Western Athletic Conference titles in the
distance events on the track, and won another as a junior. Last season, he won
regional titles in the 800m and 1600m runs and later medaled in the 1600m run
at state. He missed the final 800m medal by just a quarter of a second.

second all-conference accolades after receiving a 2nd team selection
her inaugural season.

The Wichita
Northwest High School product capped her career with a 14-4-2 record,
contributing to eight of the Cougars' ten shutouts during the year.
Allowing just .84 goals per contest in league play, Baker led the
West's full-time goalkeepers additionally in save percentage at .771
and five league shutouts with another two coming in post-season.

Rin Sato – 1st
Team All-KJCCC West Division/2nd Team All-Region Division I

Sato was a critical
component of Barton's midfield possession and controlling the game
leading to the Cougars' offensive and defensive successes.

The freshman from
Asaka-Shi, Japan, began her collegiate career with a goal, provided
an assist in her second game, then five games later into the season
set up her teammates for five goals in victory at Dodge City to tie
two former Cougars for top single game distribution achievement in
program history.

Leading the Cougars
with 12 assists and contributing 4 goals for a team fourth best 20
points, Sato's assists tied for 9th best in program single season
history and 11th overall in a career best on the chart.

Aya Saiki – 1st
Team All-KJCCC West Division/2nd Team All-Region Division I

Saiki gave the
Cougars a formidable 1-2 punch on the attacking front, second only to
Norshie in ringing the bell.

Beginning her
collegiate career with two goals and two assists, Saiki followed that
performance with a hat trick, going on to score two or more goals six
times during the season including three game winning goals.

Rattling the net 14
times, the freshman from Nishinomiya, Japan, distributed two or more
assists in three games to finish second on the squad with 9 assists
for 37 total points.

Hinata Kojima –
1st Team All-KJCCC West Division/2nd Team All-Region Division I

Kojima not only led
the backline athletically but more importantly assessed the game to
prevent opponents' attacks.

Helping the defense
to nine shutouts, the freshman from Konosu, Japan native also
contributed on the offensive end with an assist and 3 goals, one
being a game winner in knocking off 12th ranked Cowley with another
coming late to help knock off 17th ranked Hutchinson.

Hinano Nakagawa –
2nd Team All-KJCCC West Division

Teaming with Saiki
and Kojima, Nagakawa was also a key component to Barton's strong
midfield play throughout the season.

Transferring to
Barton from Southeastern Community College, the sophomore from
Komatsu, Japan, was also an offensive threat in setting up her
teammates including taking most of the Cougars' corner kicks.

Nagakawa tied
Norshie for a team third best 8 assists and contributed 3 goals
during the season including the game winner at Neosho County and two
net shakers coming in the Cougars' 3-0 win in NJCAA National
Tournament pool play over Motlow State.

Olivia Allen –
2nd Team All-KJCCC West Division

A two-year starter,
Allen was the backbone of the Cougars and the captain of the squad
from her defensive position.

The sophomore from
Wichita, Kansas, and Maize High School product, helped keep the
backline intact through the challenges of each match and solidified
one of the best defenses in the Region VI.

Offensively Allen
contributed to the Cougars' first goal of the season with the first
of her three assists during the year then capped the '22 opening day
victory with her lone net shaker of her two-year career.

Belen Guerrero –
2nd Team All-KJCCC West Division

Arguably one of the
most improved Cougars throughout the season, Guerrero was in the
starting lineup nineteen of her twenty-two games played.

Giving Barton their
third backline player to receive a post-season award, the Odessa,
Texas, native completed her freshman season with 5 assists.

The freshman from
Odessa, Texas, joins Kojima and Allen giving Barton three backline
defenders on the post-season list.

Like Allen, Guerrero
also had a goal and three assists throughout the season.

Eight Barton women's soccer players earn post season recognition

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — When Nathaniel Hackett was hired as coach of the Denver Broncos, he quickly put the motto “Win the West” on the walls at team headquarters and the front of players' T-shirts.

The Broncos, however, are the only AFC team that hasn't won a divisional game yet.

Heading into their game against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs (9-3) on Sunday, the Broncos (3-9) are already saddled with a sixth straight losing season and will miss their seventh consecutive playoffs.

The Chiefs have won 13 consecutive games in the series, and Hackett doesn't really want to talk about it.
