Competing in the four-year college dominated Tyson Invitational held at the University of Arkansas this weekend, the 5th ranked Barton Community College men's track and field team left Fayetteville recording ten personal and season bests, and a pair of program historical achievements.

The meet served as the final tune-up for post-season as the Cougars travel to Pittsburg, Kansas, next weekend for the KJCCC/Region VI Indoor Championships held Saturday and Sunday.

Theo Leveque earned the first of the program impact feats on Friday, moving up the historical 3000m chart from 10th into the 5th slot by clocking an 8:31.85 to better his previous best by seven seconds.

A battle all season between the three-man throwing group didn't disappoint in the two-day meet with four personal bests, highlighted by Christopher Crawford's program 7th best shot put throw of 17.82m (58-05.75). Fellow freshman Christopher Young, who leads the nation with an 18.07m mark, placed 3rd in the event with a 17.80m (58-04.75), as Brandon Lloyd placed 8th on a 16.53m (54-02.75) mark. Nationally, Lloyd's 17.87m best ranks 3rd while Crawford is right behind in the 4th slot.

In Friday's weight throw, the each of the trio had a personal best, Lloyd placing 11th in exceeding his by nearly two feet at 17.56m (57-07.50), Crawford's 13th placing added two inches to his previous best to mark 16.35m (53-07.75), with Young launching 2.5 inches further to place 15th at 15.68m (51-05.50). The trio rank 3rd, 10th, and 14th on the current national leaderboard.

Leading the nation's top ranked 60m hurdle squad, Jeramiah Martin moved up one spot to 4th on the leaderboard behind a personal best 8.00 second clocking. Timing an 8.075 in the qualifying round, Martin advanced to the prelims in becoming the lone two-year competitor in the final sixteen. Daqwon Wilson jumped eight up eight spots on the leaderboard to 6th from his Friday performance in the qualifying round, clocking an 8.080 in coming up .005 shy of replacing Martin in the right to advance to the prelims.

Aaron Charles and recent University of Texas signee Almond Small also posted bests in the 200m, Charles moving three spots into 8th nationally behind a 21.19 while Small continues his season improvement in clocking a 21.64.

Also making a move up the national charts, Fabian Campbell's personal 800m best of 1:52.86 gained two slots on the list in placing 19th overall on Saturday.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Super Bowl had something for everyone.

Long before Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy, the biggest winner of this NFL season walked onto the field. Damar Hamlin came out to a rousing ovation during a pregame ceremony honoring the men and women who saved his life.

Hamlin’s third appearance of the week was the best feel-good moment on a day filled with many inspirational themes.

Mahomes and Jalen Hurts put on a historic show in the first Super Bowl featuring two Black starting quarterbacks. Hurts was spectacular but Mahomes played through an ankle injury and rallied the Chiefs from a 10-point deficit for a 38-35 comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

It was yet another lesson on dealing with adversity and rising to the occasion playing out before hundreds of millions of viewers on the sport’s biggest stage.

“I appreciate it because of the failures,” Mahomes said about winning his second championship in four years. “I mean the failure of losing a Super Bowl and losing the AFC championship game gives you a greater appreciation to be standing here as a champion."

Brotherhood was on display in the first Super Bowl matchup involving two brothers playing on different teams. Chiefs All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce caught a touchdown pass to help his team topple All-Pro center Jason Kelce and the Eagles. Mama Kelce was everywhere throughout the week and sat between NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Hamlin in a suite.

“There’s nothing I can say to him other than I love him and he played a hell of a year, a hell of a season,” Travis Kelce said. “To see my family be in all its glory and get all its flowers, my mom be the center of attention on the Jumbotron before the game on the biggest stage and being able to get closer with my brother throughout the season and to meet him at the mountain top, it’s the best feeling in the world. I don’t know how many more I got left, but I’ll cherish this one forever.”

Donna Kelce was the most popular mother in Arizona until Rihanna showed up for a scintillating halftime show. The superstar singer kicked off and finished her superb performance soaring high above the slippery field surface on a platform that was suspended in the air.

And, she did it while pregnant. Rihanna’s representative confirmed afterward that she’s pregnant with her second child.

“So iconic for Rihanna to let an American football game happen at her pregnancy reveal/concert,” a fan wrote on Twitter.

Even the commercials had a warm, fuzzy vibe. Advertisers used familiar celebrity faces, light humor and plenty of cute dogs in ads that cost as much as $7 million for 30 seconds.

About the only negative on Super Sunday was a controversial penalty on the final drive of the game that left viewers feeling angry that officiating again impacted a playoff game. A defensive holding call on Eagles cornerback James Bradberry allowed Kansas City to keep the ball, run down the clock and Harrison Butker kicked the go-ahead 27-yard field goal with 8 seconds left.

But Bradberry quickly squashed the outrage, saying he held the receiver.

“It was a holding. I tugged his jersey. I was hoping they would let it slide,” Bradberry said.

On a day filled with unifying events, Bradberry’s acknowledgement was a prime example of losing with dignity.

Another best moving up the national chart was clocked in Saturday's 200m with Naiya Morgan's 24.22 time ranking 5th nationally.

Kelsie Murrell-Ross joined Efe Latham on Barton's list of weight throw qualifiers, launching a personal best 16.19m (53-01.50) throw to place 21st in punching her ticket and moving into the 4th slot of the national leaderboard. Latham, who owns the program 8th best 16.57m throw in ranking 3rd nationally ahead of Murrell-Ross, placed 25th Friday with a 14.64m (48-00.50) mark.

In the runway jumps, five of the six set personal or season bests with the lone exception being Couto's first registered mark in the long jump producing an 18th place 5.41m (17-09.00). Brittania Ingram led four Barton entries in the event with a 15th place season best 5.45m (17-10.75), Kay-Lagay Clarke in 16th a half of an inch back at 5.44m (17-10.50), a little over an inch further back in 17th was Jazmine Williamson's 5.41 (17-09.00), and Kayleigh Prentiss's 5.06m (16-07.25) was good for 25th.

Clarke led the Cougars' pair of bests in the triple jump by placing 14th at 11.92m (39-01.25) with Ingram in 17th at 11.84m (38-10.25).

Other personal bests: Williamson tied her personal high jump best for the second straight meet with an 11th place 1.69m (5-06.50), and Dy'Mond Wiley clocking a 400m time of 55.57 to rank 4th nationally.

4th ranked Barton women's track and field posts ten bests at Tyson Invite

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and his ailing right ankle are headed for another Super Bowl victory parade.

After aggravating the sprained ankle he suffered three weeks ago, the All-Pro quarterback led the Kansas City Chiefs to a thrilling 38-35 come-from-behind victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, hoisting his second Lombardi Trophy and taking with it the game's MVP honor for the second time in his career.

Mahomes finished with 182 yards passing and three touchdowns, but he was especially brilliant on his hurt ankle in the second half: 13 of 14 for 93 yards and two touchdowns. The league's MVP also had 44 yards rushing, including his 26-yard sprint with just over 2 minutes left in a 35-all game as Kansas City was driving for the go-ahead score.

Harrison Butker provided it with his 27-yard field goal with 8 seconds to go.

“I told you all this week there's nothing that's going to keep me off that football field,” said Mahomes, who hurt the ankle in the divisional round against Jacksonville. “I just want a shoutout to my teammates — we challenged each other, we needed everyone to win this football game — so shoutout to my teammates. We're Super Bowl champs!”

Mahomes helped the Chiefs end a 50-year title drought when he led the Chiefs past the 49ers in 2020. Three years later, the do-everything quarterback has delivered a third Lombardi Trophy to Kansas City while joining Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Bart Starr, Eli Manning and Terry Bradshaw as the only players to win multiple Super Bowl MVPs.

“He strives to be the greatest, without saying anything,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "That’s the way he works. He wants to be the greatest player ever.”

Mahomes reinjured his ankle late in the first half Sunday when Eagles linebacker T.J. Edwards spun him to the ground. He lay there for several seconds before hobbling off the field in a scene eerily reminiscent of earlier in the playoffs.

Mahomes said he didn't get a painkilling shot at halftime, but he no doubt benefited from a longer halftime to allow for Rihanna's performance. And by the time the field was cleared of the stage, No. 15 was at the head of the pack as he led the Chiefs back to the field, facing a 24-14 deficit but knowing they would get the opening kickoff.

Mahomes promptly marched them 75 yards and Isiah Pacheco crashed into the end zone to close within 24-21. When the Eagles answered with a field goal, Mahomes led another 75-yard TD march. And a 65-yard punt return by Kadarius Toney set up Mahomes' 4-yard TD toss to a wide-open Skyy Moore that made it 35-27 in the fourth quarter.

Mahomes' final scoring drive was pure guts.

The Eagles had just scored and made the 2-point conversion to knot the game 35-all with 5:15 left when Mahomes hit JuJu Smith-Schuster for a first down. He completed another pass to Travis Kelce, then Mahomes escaped on a long scramble — just like his one that set up their winning field goal against the Bengals in the AFC title game.

This time, the Chiefs kept going. They benefited from a defensive holding call on third-and-8 against Eagles cornerback James Bradberry, then got down to the goal line before killing the clock and sending Butker onto the field for what turned out to be the winning field goal.

“It hasn’t even sank in yet. I appreciate it because of the failures,” said Mahomes, whose Chiefs lost to the Buccaneers in the Super Bowl two years ago. "It gives you a greater appreciation to be standing here as a champion.”

Mahomes' ankle was a big question mark for the AFC championship game, when he only had a week to recover from the initial injury sustained against Jacksonville. But with two weeks to rest it, Mahomes had insisted all week that he was good to go in the Super Bowl, and Reid likewise said his star quarterback had no limitations.

Mahomes was moving around well in the first half Sunday, too. He scrambled for a big gain on Kansas City's opening series and was doing a good job of buying time against the NFL's top-ranked team in sacks this season.

He was flushed from the pocket, stepped forward and scrambled to his left, then Edwards lassoed him and spun him to the ground. Mahomes lay there for a moment with his facemask buried in the turf before getting to his feet and hobbling to the sideline in a near-carbon copy of the scene from three weeks ago at Arrowhead Stadium.

That night, Mahomes came back after halftime to lead the Chiefs to victory to keep their Super Bowl hopes alive.

Super Bowl MVP Mahomes rallies Chiefs to win on hurt ankle

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes was magical when the Kansas City Chiefs desperately needed him to pull off another Super Bowl comeback.

Playing on an injured ankle, Mahomes threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and scrambled 26 yards on the go-ahead drive before Harrison Butker kicked a 27-yard field goal with 8 seconds left to give the Chiefs a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

The Chiefs won their second NFL title in four years and two-time NFL MVP Mahomes earned his second Super Bowl MVP award.

“I thought guys just embraced the moment,” Mahomes said about rallying from a 10-point halftime deficit. “In that first half, we were playing and doing some good stuff, but I felt like the guys were getting consumed by everything around us.”

Mahomes and Jalen Hurts excelled in the first Super Bowl matchup featuring two Black starting QBs. But Mahomes turned it up in the second half after reaggravating a sprained right ankle.

“It took everybody to win the game,” Mahomes shouted as red and yellow confetti littered the field.

Coach Andy Reid, who couldn’t win the big game in Philadelphia, beat his former team to earn his second ring with Mahomes and the Chiefs.

“We wanted to get this so bad for him,” Travis Kelce said. “His legacy in Philly lives on forever. ... There’s a lot of pride in knowing that he’s had success in two different organizations, but this was the better one.”

With the score tied at 35-35, the Eagles tried to let the Chiefs score a touchdown with under two minutes left so they could get the ball back after a defensive holding call on cornerback James Bradberry on third-and-8 gave Kansas City a first down. But Jerick McKinnon slid at the 2, forcing the Eagles to use their last timeout.

On third down from the 4, Mahomes connected with Skyy Moore to extend their lead to 35-27. Moore also was wide open on the play.

Hurts hit DeVonta Smith for a 45-yard gain to the Chiefs 2 and ran in for his third score of the game. He also ran in for the 2-point conversion to tie it at 35-35 with 5:15 to go.

As “Fly! Eagles! Fly!” reverberated throughout the stadium, Mahomes and the Chiefs went back to work.

The 27-year-old Mahomes became the third player to win his second NFL MVP award before age 28. He also became the youngest QB to start three Super Bowls. Mahomes finally broke the MVP curse, becoming the first player to win the Super Bowl the same season after nine straight players lost.

Just five years after winning the first Super Bowl in franchise history, the Eagles (16-4) came close with a different coach and new quarterback. Nick Sirianni replaced Doug Pederson in 2021 and Hurts took over for Carson Wentz in late 2020.

Hurts set a Super Bowl record with 70 yards rushing and tied a record with three rushing scores. He also threw for 304 yards and one TD.

"We use this pain, we use this failure to motivate us so we can make it a strength,” Sirianni said.

Hurts, who missed two games late in the season with a shoulder injury, had TD runs of 1 and 4 yards in the first half along with a 45-yard TD pass to A.J. Brown.

But Hurts also made a rare mistake when he fumbled without being hit while scrambling away from pressure. Nick Bolton picked it up and raced 36 yards for a score that made it 14-14. Hurts had just eight turnovers this season, six picks and two fumbles.

Mahomes finished 21 of 27 for 182 yards with three TDs and no turnovers. He ran for 44 yards.

Mahomes connected with Kelce on an 18-yard TD pass in the right corner to tie it at 7-7 in the first quarter. The Chiefs’ All-Pro tight end and Eagles All-Pro center Jason Kelce became the first set of brothers to play against each other in the Super Bowl.

Their mom, Donna Kelce, wore a half-red, half-green jersey with No. 87 on the front for Travis and No. 62 on the back for Jason. She sat in a suite between NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Damar Hamlin.

scintillating Super Bowl 57 had a bit of an underwhelming finish. The
Chiefs — who won 38-35 — were driving and faced third-and-8 at
the Eagles 15-yard line with 1:54 remaining when Kansas City
quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw incomplete to JuJu Smith-Schuster.
But officials flagged Bradberry for defensive holding, which negated
the incompletion and gave the Chiefs a first down. Replays showed
that Bradberry made light contact with Smith-Schuster, but it didn’t
appear to affect the play. Kansas City was able to essentially run
out the clock from that point forward and kick a late field goal for
the win.

LAS VEGAS (AP) —
Quarterback Derek Carr turned down a trade offer from the Las Vegas
Raiders to the New Orleans Saints, a person with knowledge of the
decision said Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity
because they weren’t authorized to comment publicly. That person
said Carr wouldn’t accept a pay cut to help finalize the deal, and
the Saints were the only team interested in making a trade with the
Raiders. Carr has a no-trade clause in his contract. Given those
circumstances and Wednesday’s deadline for the Raiders to trade or
release Carr, it appears Las Vegas will cut the QB.

— Liz Scott finished with 20 points and eight rebounds and No. 16
Oklahoma breezed to its fourth straight win with an 85-68 victory

Mexico State has called off the rest of its men’s basketball season
after reviewing a police report that cited three players for false
imprisonment, harassment and criminal sexual contact against a
teammate. In a statement, chancellor Dan Arvizu said the action was
needed after receiving additional details of reports related to
hazing allegations against players. KTSM-TV in El Paso, Texas,
obtained what it said was a redacted police report with none of the
players named. The station said the report detailed the victim
telling investigators that on Feb. 6, three members of the team held
down the victim, removed his clothing exposing his buttocks and began
to hit him in the buttocks, The victim also said the players touched
his scrotum.

Dawson Chavez will carry the Barton banner once again to the National Championships as the third-year sophomore placed 4th in the 157-division on Saturday helping the Cougar wrestling team to a 9th place finish at the NJCAA South Central District Championships held in Chanute, Kansas.

Making the most of the Covid-19 eligibility exemption, Chavez knocked off the nation's 3rd ranked wrestler in a key match punching his third straight ticket to the big stage at the Mid-America Center held March 3-4 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

As a team the Cougars accumulated 41.5 points to finish tied with Neosho County Community College. In a district loaded with six of the nation's Top-17 teams, 4th ranked Pratt Community College had four individual district champions in winning the team title with 187 points to distance 5th ranked Northeastern Oklahoman A&amp;M College's 154 points.

The Cougars also came away with a pair of 7th placers in back-pinning fashion as Avery Wolf won in the 125-division with Zane Hennessey capturing the 149-division.

After receiving a first round bye, Chavez dispatched Labette's Jonathan Vincent 9-2 but was sent to the backside on a narrow 10-9 loss to 8th ranked Richard Mack of NEO in the semifinals round. Needing a victory for an automatic qualifying spot, Chavez regrouped to knock off Pratt's 3rd ranked #3 Samajay Alboyd by a 13-10 decision to avenge a 10-7 loss two weeks prior at the Jayhawk Duals. Dawson's attempt to knock off his second straight ranked opponent was spoiled in the consolation finals as 7th ranked Noah Smith of Carl Albert State piled up a 17-8 major decision.

In addition to Chavez, five other Cougars received first round byes but were knocked to the consolation side of the bracket in taking quarterfinal losses to nationally ranked opponents.

Wolf was the lone exemption of the first round bye but made quick work of his first round opponent in pinning Ayden Montez of Cowley on a 1:08 Fall. Bounced to the bracket by the 2nd ranked Jett Strickenberger of Northwest Kansas Technical College, Wolf then registered his second back flattening with 1:54 mat slap over Caden Betz of Carl Albert State. Brady Foster of Cloud County then racked up a 13-3 major decision loss on Wolf in the Consolation Round 3 but Wolf again would regroup with another pinning over Dalton Kivett of Labette in the 7th place match. Not done with his day, Wolf had to wrestle a challenge match in ending his day with a 9-8 loss to Tyler FIelds of Colby.

Hennessey's first time on the mat following his bye was met by top ranked Dylan Brown of NEO. Sent to the consolation via a Fall, Hennessey won by an 8-4 decision over Chase Koehler of Cowley before getting pinned in the first period by Labette's Traylon Jackson. Wrestling in the 7th place match, Hennessey would be the lone Cougar to include the day's action with a victory in taking care of Cloud County's Salvador Barintas with a 1:35 Fall.

Three other Cougars reached the 7th place matches but came up short of the placings, Stephan Baldwin in the 133-Division, Cohen Suchy in the 141-Division, and Chance Unruh in the 165-Division. Keondre Bonner was the lone Cougar to come up empty in his matches, finishing the 174-Division with a pair of losses.

Not done with his day, Wolf had to wrestle a challenge match in ending his day with a 9-8 loss to Tyler FIelds of Colby.Hennessey's first time on the mat following his bye was met by top ranked Dylan Brown of NEO. Sent to the consolation via a Fall, Hennessey won by an 8-4 decision over Chase Koehler of Cowley before getting pinned in the first period by Labette's Traylon Jackson. Wrestling in the 7th place match, Hennessey would be the lone Cougar to include the day's action with a victory in taking care of Cloud County's Salvador Barintas with a 1:35 Fall.Three other Cougars reached the 7th place matches but came up short of the placings, Stephan Baldwin in the 133-Division, Cohen Suchy in the 141-Division, and Chance Unruh in the 165-Division. Keondre Bonner was the lone Cougar to come up empty in his matches, finishing the 174-Division with a pair of losses.

Barton Wrestling finishes 9th at NJCAA South Central District

The blood round lived up to its name Saturday in Dodge City. At least for the Great Bend wrestlers. Five Lady Panther wrestlers came up just one win shy of advancing to the state championships, but four Great Bend wrestlers did survive and advance. The five Western Athletic Conference schools dominated the loaded Class 6-5A regional with Dodge City beating Garden City for the title. Hays placed third, and Liberal and Great Bend finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Just one Lady Panther wrestled for a regional title. At 125 pounds, third-ranked Daizy Gomez pinned her way to the finals for another rematch against top-ranked Ariana De La Rosa of Dodge City. After some quiet finals matches, the gym came to life as Gomez took an early lead but was eventually pinned by De La Rosa in the third period. Gomez takes a 29 record to state.

Freshman Kaylea McMullen heads to state after a third-place finish at 120 pounds. She pinned her first opponent, then won in sudden victory against a tough Hays opponent. That pitted McMullen against second-ranked Julissa Rodriguez of Garden City of the semifinals. Rodriguez pinned all three of her opponents in the first period en route to the championship. Needing one more win to qualify for state, McMullen pinned her Liberal opponent, then pinned her Wichita West opponent in the consolation finals. McMullen heads to state with a 26-12 record.

Senior Katie Kuhlman pulled out a third-place finish at 135 pounds the hard way. After a bye, she was pinned by Arkansas City in the quarterfinals. A bye on the backside put Kuhlman one win away from state. She answered the call with a 10-2 major decision against Liberal. Kuhlman defeated her Garden City opponent 5-2 in the consolation finals to secure third place. She takes a 17-12 record to state.

Freshman Natalee Daniels is headed to state at 190 pounds after a fourth-place finish. She opened with a 5-2 decision before being pinned by second-ranked and unbeaten Druzzla Johnson of Wichita West. Needing a win to advance, Daniels pinned her Dodge City opponent  before getting pinned by Bishop Carroll in the consolation finals. Daniels takes a 23-11 record to state.

Then there was the heartbreak. Sophomore Kirra Stevens pinned her first two opponents to reach the 155-pound semifinals. She was in a competitive match against the eventual-runner up from Garden City before suffering a broken arm in the second period. With the injury, Stevens came up one win shy of state qualification.

Sophomore Leah Nokes opened with a bye and a pin to reach the semifinals at 170 pounds. After a loss to fourth-ranked Jolette Armaraz of Dodge City, Nokes needed just one more win on the back side of the bracket. She was pinned by Goddard-Eisenhower to end her season.

A mild 235-pound bracket was wide open for the top-four to qualify. Freshman Yarlene Granados opened with a bye before getting pinned by the eventual runner-up from Derby in the semifinals. Just one win from state, Granados fell behind 5-4 late in her consolation semifinal match against Wichita Northeast. That proved to be the final in one of the most exciting blood round matches of the day.

Junior Sierra Ferguson lost another exciting match at 130 pounds. Ferguson pinned her first opponent before giving sixth-ranked Belle Hernandez of Garden City her best match of the day in a 2-0 loss in the quarters. Ferguson pinned her Hutchinson opponent and won a 7-2 decision against Campus to reach the blood round. There, Ferguson trailed Derby before a late really nearly gave her the edge. Freshman Brooke Downs was ultimately able to get the pin to end Ferguson's season.

Danica Cline came up one win shy of state at 145 pounds. After a bye, she was pinned by Liberal's state qualifier in the quarters. Cline pinned her next two opponents from Wichita Northeast and Eisenhower to reach the blood round where she lost an 8-1 decision to the eventual third-place finisher from Hays. The bracket also featured top-ranked and unbeaten Ashley Arroyo of Dodge City.

Senior Jaydon Davis entered a 140-pound bracket with the top-two ranked wrestlers. After a bye, Davis was pinned by second-ranked Yareli Garcia of Dodge City in the quarters. Davis came up with a pin to stay alive, but missed the blood round after a competitive match against Derby where she was pinned in the third period.

Senior Karley Stuckey had a tough road at 105 pounds. A first-round bye meant a quarterfinal match against second-ranked and eventual champion Amara Eshe of Derby. Stuckey was pinned by her Campus opponent on the backside. Sophomore Hannah Crathorne posted an 0-2 record at 115 pounds.

The four Lady Panther state qualifiers head to the Class 6-5A State Wrestling Championships at Park City's Hartman Arena on Feb. 22-23.

Four Lady Panther wrestlers headed to state

PHOENIX (AP) — Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt remembers the halcyon days of Philadelphia sports in the early 1980s when, during a span of consecutive seasons, the city's four professional sports teams all played for championships.

The Flyers lost to the Islanders in the Stanley Cup Final. The 76ers fell to the Lakers in the NBA Finals. The Eagles were blown out by the Raiders in the Super Bowl. Only the Phillies — Schmidt and those fabulous Phillies — were successful, beating the Kansas City Royals in six games to win the World Series.

Schmidt called 1980 a “year that I'll never forget,” not only for that championship but for the start of his long friendship with Royals third baseman George Brett, one that endures to this day but will be put to the test on Sunday.

Schmidt is pulling for the Eagles in the Super Bowl. Brett, quite naturally, is all-in on the Chiefs.

“He and I made a bet,” Schmidt said. “Just $20, but the bragging rights are worth millions.”

There really is no loser in Philadelphia or Kansas City these days.

The Phillies are coming off another World Series appearance, and another defeat, this time to the Astros, while the Eagles are trying to avoid a similar fate Sunday night. The Sixers are soaring in the Eastern Conference with Joel Embiid and James Harden, Villanova is coming off a Final Four appearance and the Union played for the Major League Soccer title.

Even Temple beat Houston a few weeks ago in men's basketball, the third win over a No. 1 team in program history.

“I live in Atlanta," said hoops Hall of Famer Julius Erving, who was a big part of the Sixers' early 1980s success, “so when I turn the radio on, all I hear about is Atlanta sports. So it’s so nice to come back to Philadelphia and know that buzz is here.

“The town is crazy,” Dr. J added. “Everybody’s feeling themselves."

They're feeling warm and fuzzy in Kansas City, too.

The city straddling the Kansas-Missouri state line long ago shed its old cow-town image, turning into a hipster paradise on the plains.

And the dizzying amount of sports on tap in Kansas City, coupled with the success of Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs over the years, have only heightened the sense of civic pride that people are feeling these days.

“I think the fanbase is unbelievable,” Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster said. "I want to be in a place where I can play ball, show my personality and just win man, so yeah. This has been it.”

The Chiefs are playing in their third Super Bowl in four years and trying to bring home a second Lombardi Trophy in that span.

And just across the parking lot, within the past decade, the long-suffering Royals won two American League pennants and a World Series — though they are now in the midst of a massive rebuilding effort.

Not that they've become irrelevant. They're in the planning stages to replace the aging jewel of Kauffman Stadium with a new downtown stadium, which promises to be the centerpiece of a ballpark village and entertainment complex.

There's another stadium under construction, too, for the Kansas City Current of the National Women’s Soccer League — the team lost the NWSL title game to the Portland Thorns in late October. Mahomes owns a stake in that club, along with pieces of the Royals and MLS club Sporting Kansas City.

Next month, the NCAA Tournament is bringing a regional final to T-Mobile Center, and there's a chance Kansas will be there trying to defend its men's basketball national championship. Then in April, the NFL brings its draft circus to town with a sprawling setup centered on the historic Union Station downtown.

“How can it be better?” asked Kathy Nelson, the chief executive of the Kansas City Sports Commission, who grew up with Brett and the Royals and now is helping to organize the draft and other events in the city.

“I remember celebrating championships,” she said, “but I don't remember a time when we were this stacked.”

Most cities have a golden era in sports. Some more than one. And they can sometimes last decades, such as the one in Boston, where over a nearly two-decade span its four pro teams won a combined 12 championships: six Lombardi Trophies for the Patriots, four World Series crowns for the Red Sox, and titles each for the Bruins and Celtics.

Philadelphia and Kansas City are basking in the glow of one right now.

Going 1-1 in the first day of the Permian Basin Invitational in Odessa, Texas, an early first pitch and defensive woes did not fare well for the Barton Community College softball team on Saturday as the Cougars dropped both games completing the weekend trip down south.

Beginning the day with the 9:00 a.m. contest, Barton led after the first inning against North Central Texas College but the Lions pulled ahead in the third frame in going on to a an 11-3 complete game victory. Returning to the field twenty minutes later, the Cougars faced host 3rd ranked Odessa for the second time of the weekend, scoring four runs on Friday but getting shutout by the Wranglers on Saturday 8-0 in a game shortened five innings.

The Cougars next games will be Tuesday, opening up Cougar Field for the 2023 season by hosting Northern Oklahoma College-Enid in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.

Barton Softball comes up empty on final day of Texas trip

The Barton Community College baseball team earned a doubleheader split Saturday at Rose State Community College. The Cougars secured the series win in the front end of the doubleheader earning a dominating 12-2 run rule victory while falling in the finale 9-5.

Concluding the opening weekend 2-1, Barton will return home to prepare for their home opening series on Saturday and Sunday against Western Nebraska Community College. First pitch for the pair of doubleheaders is slated for 1:00 p.m. from Lawson-Biggs Field.

Looking to secure the weekend series, Barton wasted little time grasping the momentum in the opening frame loading the bases on a Riley Silva single, Ricardo Sanchez drawn hit-by-pitch and the first of two errors allowing Jaden Wiley to reach all with one-out. Three pitches later the Raiders second error in the inning proved costly allowing Ayden Blachowicz to reach scoring Silva. The Cougar lead grew quickly as a wild pitch brought in Sanchez and a bases loaded drawn walk by Dryden Howse expanded the lead to four with a Hunter Seier fielder's choice capping the five-run frenzy.

Barton came back to add four more tallies in the second extending the lead to 8-0. Back-to-back leadoff singles by Robby Bolin and Silva's second in as many innings jumpstarted the frame, with a Sanchez sacrifice fly following by a Wiley RBI groundout making it 7-0. With two-down a Blachowicz plunk by pitch would structure the final run-on Jaron Cotton's RBI double to left.

The offense resumed in the third as a leadoff Seier double and one-out Bolin hit-by-pitch had the Cougars back in business. Following a Silva fielder's choice, Sanchez brought home his second and third RBIs delivering a two-out single pushing the Barton lead to 10-0.

Rose State broke through with its first run of the game in the bottom of the third as Barton's lone error of the game to open the inning would cross on a two-out single trimming the lead to 10-1. 

Barton would respond, scoring their final two runs in the fifth as Blachowicz continued his strong day at the plate driving in his second and third RBIs scoring Sanchez double and Wiley walk.

The Raiders would make one final comeback attempt in the home fifth loading the bases behind a pair of walks and hit-by-pitch issued by Brett Allen. Colton Wahlstrom would limit the damage coming on facing a one-out bases loaded jam squandering just a sacrifice fly before getting the final flyout halting any Rose State comeback.

Barton's offense was highlighted by Sanchez 2-for-2 day driving in three RBIs and scoring twice. Blachowicz contributed driving in a trio of runs going 1-for-3. Also contributing multiple hits were Silva and Seier each recording a pair.

On the mound David Stuart was solid tossing 4.0-innings of one-hit baseball, allowing one unearned run, walking three and striking out six across 84 pitches en route to his first win of the season.

Looking to sweep the series, Silva got the Cougars on the board in the top of the first reaching on a one-out single, scoring on a wild pitch three batters later. The lead would be short livid as the Raiders cashed in during the home half producing a double and RBI single.

Scoreless over the next two innings, Barton snatched their final lead in the fourth on Cotton's sac-fly scoring Wiley and Ayden Hadley's first collegiate run batted on the ensuing pitch driving in Blachowicz's single. Rose State brought the deficit to one as a solo shot to lead off the fourth made it 3-2.

Rose State broke through in the fifth, as four straight Raiders reached base to open a five-run inning fabricated behind four hits and drawing a trio of walks claiming a 7-3 lead into the sixth.

Barton drew within 7-5 in the top of the seventh as a Seier single brought home Cotton's leadoff single and later scoring on Silva's RBI single with two-outs.

A leadoff error in the bottom of the seventh generated to a Raider run with the final touches being put on in the eighth, as a leadoff double resulted into an RBI single and a pair of walks loading the bases equipped an RBI groundout.

Silva and Blachowicz furnished the bat production each supplying 2-for-4 games as the Cougars were held without an extra base hit in the series finale after producing six in the opening two contests.

Starting pitcher Teegan Cain (0-1) was solid through the opening four innings allowing just one run and three hits before getting into trouble in the fifth concluding the day surrendering five runs on five hits, walking four and striking out two in the losing effort.

The lead would be short livid as the Raiders cashed in during the home half producing a double and RBI single.Scoreless over the next two innings, Barton snatched their final lead in the fourth on Cotton's sac-fly scoring Wiley and Ayden Hadley's first collegiate run batted on the ensuing pitch driving in Blachowicz's single. Rose State brought the deficit to one as a solo shot to lead off the fourth made it 3-2.Rose State broke through in the fifth, as four straight Raiders reached base to open a five-run inning fabricated behind four hits and drawing a trio of walks claiming a 7-3 lead into the sixth.Barton drew within 7-5 in the top of the seventh as a Seier single brought home Cotton's leadoff single and later scoring on Silva's RBI single with two-outs.A leadoff error in the bottom of the seventh generated to a Raider run with the final touches being put on in the eighth, as a leadoff double resulted into an RBI single and a pair of walks loading the bases equipped an RBI groundout.Silva and Blachowicz furnished the bat production each supplying 2-for-4 games as the Cougars were held without an extra base hit in the series finale after producing six in the opening two contests.Starting pitcher Teegan Cain (0-1) was solid through the opening four innings allowing just one run and three hits before getting into trouble in the fifth concluding the day surrendering five runs on five hits, walking four and striking out two in the losing effort.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Texas Tech found itself in yet another another tight conference game. This time the Red Raiders were able to pull out the victory.

De’Vion Harmon scored 20 points, including a crucial driving basket in the final minute, as Texas Tech upended No. 12-ranked Kansas State 71-63 on Saturday night.

“I missed like my first six shots,” Harmon said. “But the coaches and my teammates had confidence in me and told me to continue being aggressive. It was a good team win.”

Victories have been elusive for the Red Raiders since the start of conference play. Tech has been in most of its league games, but has fallen short down the stretch with the latest example coming Wednesday on the road against Oklahoma State as Tech gave up a three-point play as time expired and lost 71-68.

It was a different story against the Wildcats, though. Tech took the lead in the final minutes of the first half and never relinquished it, despite Kansas State pulling within one point on four occasions and two points two other times during the final 10 minutes.

“I think that speaks volumes for this team,” Tech head coach Mark Adams said. “We’ve been in this situation many, many times. We know we want to win, but we haven’t been able to. We just kept encouraging these guys to stay aggressive, make plays and have no regrets.”

The Red Raiders (13-12, 2-10 Big 12) held the Wildcats to two field goals in the game’s final four minutes as they extended a 62-61 lead at the 2:15 mark.

Jaylon Tyson added another huge basket for Tech with a tip-in that pushed the advantage to 64-61, setting the stage for Harmon’s slashing drive between defenders as the Red Raiders rebounded from a last-second road loss to Oklahoma State.

Kevin Obanor added four free throws in the final 37 seconds and Harmon converted one of two as Tech held off the Wildcats, who got only a pair of free throws and layup from Markquis Nowell in the final two plus minutes.

“I was disappointed that we gave the ball away as many times as we did,” Kansas State head coach Jerome Tang said of his team’s 23-turnover night. “Texas Tech gets credit for that, but it’s also us not being tough enough.”

Kansas State (19-6, 7-5) edged as close as one point throughout the second half, but Tech answered with key baskets to maintain the lead. The Wildcats were led by Nowell’s 18 points. Desi Sills added 12 points.

The Red Raider defense limited Kansas State guard Keyontae Johnson, who had been averaging 18 points per game, to just nine points.

“He picked a bad night to have a bad night,” Tang said.
