Expectations have been high for the Great Bend Lady Panther bowling team all season. Even with a second-place finish to Salina South in last week's regional action, coach David Feldbauer felt like his team was the one to beat at Thursday's Class 5-1A State Bowling Championships at Wichita's Northrock Lanes. The Lady Panthers avenged last week's loss, beating Salina South by 83 pins to win the state title.

"It was amazing," Feldbauer said. "I am so proud. Just the excitement of this morning was great. I'm just overwhelmed we're finally able to make that leap and get first place. We've had the second, we've had the third, and now we finally get title."

Scores were down across the board with just three teams surpassing 3,000 pins. Topeka Seaman was competitive early before falling off to third place with 3,007 pins. Salina South's Rylee Lambeth won the individual title with a 641 series. Panther freshman Zoey Mayberry led the Lady Panthers in sixth overall with a 591 to miss the top-five by just two pins.

"She was great," Feldbauer said. "She started off doing really well, missed a couple little easy spares, but she came right back at it the second and third games with back-to-back 200s. I'm real proud of her. She got focused and was finally able to do a three-game set like she needs to."

Senior Sahara Rhiza put up the best state finish of her career to finish seventh overall with a 586. Just two pins behind her, reigning state champion and senior Kaylin Wahlmeier placed eighth at 584.

"She's disappointed in herself," said Feldbauer. "I think the expectations of her trying to bowl extremely well just got to her and got into her head too quick. We were finally able to break her of a few things by the third game to have her bowl that 237 game at the end and lead her team into Baker games, where she was comfortable bowling. She did really well in Baker, which is where it needs to come from."

Emilee Nelson finished 16th overall with a 565, a single pin outside the top 15. Aliyah Fryberger placed 19th with a 555, again losing a place by a single pin. Paige Heine rolled a 340 in the other varsity spot.

"I knew it was going to be competitive," Feldbauer said. "I knew they were going to have to come out and bowl. We weren't actually bowling next to Salina South, which sort of helped, so we didn't keep looking at their scores and looking at everybody else's scores. I was watching some of the Topeka Seaman scores. Those girls were bowling lights out until that last game so we were doing well."

Jamal Shead scored a career-high 25 points, Marcus Sasser added 22
and No. 1 Houston defeated Wichita State 83-66. Shead shot 10 of 17
from the field. The junior was 4 of 8 on 3-pointers. Sasser tied the
school career record for most 3-pointers set by Robert McKiver with
261. He also scored at least 20 points for the sixth straight game,
and chants of “Sasser” filled the Fertitta Center after it was
over. Jarace Walker had 131 points and nine rebounds for Houston,
which has won 10 straight games and is 28-2 overall. Craig Porter Jr.
had 17 points and seven rebounds, Jaron Pierre Jr. added 16 points
and Kenny Pohto had 12 for Wichita State. The Shockers are 15-14.

AMES, Iowa (AP) —
Former Iowa State basketball player Caleb Grill says he has been
battling mental illness and regrets what led to his dismissal. Coach
T.J. Otzelberger said Grill had failed to meet program expectations.
Grill was the Cyclones’ third-leading scorer and started 22 of 25
games. Grill says he’s been battling mental illness. He thanked
Otzelberger for the opportunity to play for the Cyclones. He thanked
his family for support when he might have made a decision that would
have cost him his life.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio
(AP) — Antoine Davis missed his shot at making history. Detroit
Mercy's star guard finished four points shy of breaking Pete
Maravich's NCAA career scoring record, a mark that has stood since
1970. Davis, who leads the nation with a 28.4 points per game
average, entered Thursday's Horizon League tournament game against
Youngstown State needing 26 to pass “Pistol” Pete’s mark. Davis
finished with 22 after being slowed by a fourth foul. He missed four
3-pointers in the final two minutes of the intense loss. Davis
finished with 3,664 points to Maravich's 3,667. Maravich set his
record in just three years at LSU.

LAS CRUCES, N.M.
(AP) — At New Mexico State, the once-treasured men’s basketball
program has been suspended for the season due to a fatal shooting and
a gruesome allegation of locker-room hazing. Interviews by The
Associated Press have found a deep distrust and frustration with
school leadership. There have been seven different presidents,
interim presidents and chancellors over the past 15 years. The
state’s second-biggest university has prided itself as a place for
students who are often the first in their families to attend college.
There is no word yet on when the men's program will be back up and
running.

golf. The hottest player in golf had no trouble at one of the
toughest tests in Florida. Rahm opened with three straight birdies at

three PGA Tour wins this year. He's won five of his last nine

Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter has returned to the NFL
scouting combine after turning himself in to Athens police Wednesday
night and posting a combined bond of $4,000 on charges of reckless
driving and racing in relation to a fatal crash that killed a
teammate and team staffer. Carter, projected as one of the top
players in next month’s NFL draft, left the NFL scouting combine in
Indianapolis after being informed of the arrest warrant issued in
conjunction with the Jan. 15 crash that killed teammate Devin Willock
and a recruiting staff member. Carter says he expects to be “fully
exonerated.”

The Barton Community College softball team ran its win streak to six straight as the Cougars completed a doubleheader sweep Wednesday over Seward County Community College.

The Cougars took game one at Cougar Field in the minimum five innings 8-0 before capping the conference sweep with a 9-3 victory.

Barton improves to 4-0 in league play and 9-6 overall while dropping Seward County to 0-4 in conference and 2-14 on the season. Next up is a Saturday 12:00 p.m. first pitch at Pratt Community College.

The Cougars pounded out 22 hits while hurlers&nbsp;Jenna Henderson&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kayla Beers&nbsp;combined to limit the Saints bats to eight hits and eleven strikeouts.

At the top of the lineup&nbsp;Halie Stoneking&nbsp;set the tone in going 5-of-7 with three extra base hits including a belted game two leadoff home run deep in the left field trees for her fourth of the year.

Jaysa Anderson&nbsp;stood out in the opening game victory going 2-of-4 with four RBI's, the first hit coming on a first inning double with the second hit clearing the fence for Barton's clinching three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The day also saw a pair of collegiate first home run achievements for freshmen&nbsp;Mikaila Herring&nbsp;and&nbsp;Leslie Ramos. Making the game two left field start, Herring belted a second inning 1-out home run putting the Cougars up 2-1 with Ramos connecting on her first an inning later with a 1-out two-run shot pushing the margin to 6-1.

Makenzie Haslett&nbsp;made the game two start behind the dish, lacing her first double as a Cougar in going 2-of-3 from the number nine spot in the lineup.

Henderson improved to 2-3 in the circle, sending the Saints down in order three of the five frames in recording her second straight five-strikeout performance. Beers ran her super-sophomore record to 4-0 and 26-18 in her career, striking out six in her seven frames to eclipse five or more strikeouts for the 25th time.

Winners of 10 straight, the Cougars improve to 12-1 overall while the Coyotes development squad drops to 3-6 on the season.

Receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division I poll, Barton will travel back on the road for a three game set in Kansas City, KS taking on the receiving vote Blue Devils of Kansas City Kansas Community College. First pitch of the series will get underway Saturday at 2:00 p.m. after pushing the three game set back a day due to weather. The teams will conclude the weekend with a 12:00 p.m. Sunday doubleheader.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Keyontae Johnson and Markquis Nowell have been the savvy seniors leading Kansas State's basketball renaissance all season, a nearly inseparable duo helping to put the No. 11 Wildcats in position to make a deep March run.

Desi Sills shined every bit as bright as them Wednesday night.

The often-overlooked Arkansas State transfer flirted with a triple-double in his own Bramlage Coliseum farwell, joining Johnson and Nowell in leading the Wildcats to an 85-69 victory over Oklahoma. Sills finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and eight assists before riling up the student section with a fiery postgame speech.

“I wanted to leave a legacy. Leave it all on the floor,” Sills said afterward. “I was shy of a triple-double but that doesn't matter. I'm just glad we got the win.”

Johnson finished with 16 points and Nowell added 11 points and 10 assists, helping the Wildcats (23-7, 11-6 Big 12) end a three-game skid against the Sooners. Nae'Qwan Tomlin also scored 19 points for Kansas State, which led by as many as 20 early in the second half before holding on down the stretch.

Then the party started: Jerome Tang sent his entire team pouring into the student section, where they danced the “Wabash Cannonball,” while the first-year coach headed to the pep band and joined right in.

“I was just so thankful and grateful that I decided to finish my career here at k-state,” Nowell said. “I've been on both sides of the deal, the losing side and now the winning side, so I'm just thankful for it all.”

The Sooners (14-16, 4-13) applied a little pressure late, getting within 75-65 with just under 2 minutes to go. But that's when Tanner Groves was ejected for hitting Sills with an errant elbow, and his free throws put the game away.

“It definitely wasn't intentional,” Oklahoma coach Porter Moser said. “It was an unfortunate play. I don't think it was malicious. I know the kid; that's not who he is. It was a high-elbow play. An unfortunate play.”

Milos Uzan had 20 points to lead the Sooners. Otega Oweh finished with 18.

Oklahoma spent most of the first half mired in foul trouble. Groves and Oweh took a seat with two apiece 5 minutes into the game, and Kansas State spent the last 15 minutes parading to the line in the bonus.

Yet it wasn't until the closing stretch that the Wildcats established some breathing room.

The game was tied 25-all when Tomlin began a 9-0 run to carry Kansas State into the locker room. David N'Guessan added a bucket a couple of minutes later, Johnson drilled a 3-pointer off a nifty behind-the-back pass from Sills, and N'Guessan added a punctuating dunk off Nowell's feed for a 34-25 advantage.

“The wheels fell off,” Moser said. "Not that you can't overcome a 9-0 run to end the half, but we were up and up, and back and forth. Next thing we know we're down nine.”

It wasn't long until they were down much more than that.

After a bucket by Groves to start the second half, the Wildcats ripped off seven straight points — dunks by Tomlin bookending Nowell's 3-pointer. And after Nowell hit another 3 from well beyond the arc, he saved a steal as he fell out of bounds, starting a fastbreak that ended with Sills' reverse layup for a 48-31 lead with 16 minutes to go.

The lead stretched to 53-33 before the Oklahoma began to mount its failed comeback bid.

We all bought in," Sill said. “We all committed on the defensive end, we got easy transition buckets. I thought that was the key to the game. We took off from there.”

Oklahoma is the only Big 12 team that must win next week's conference tournament to earn an NCAA tourney berth, though three others are teetering on the brink. But the Sooners proved in wins over the Wildcats, Iowa State and No. 2 Alabama that they are capable, and they showed glimpses of it again Wednesday night.

Kansas State remains in the mix for a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, which would match the 2010 team for its best since seeding began in 1979. But the Wildcats likely have to beat West Virginia on Saturday and win a couple of Big 12 tourney games to make that happen.

The regular season wraps Saturday when Oklahoma plays No. 22 TCU and Kansas State visits West Virginia.

(AP) — Damion Baugh scored a career-high 24 points, Emanuel Mille
had 20 and No. 22 TCU held on to beat Texas 75-73. The loss denies
the ninth-ranked Longhorns a chance to play for a share of the Big 12
title in their upcoming regular-season finale. Baugh scored on a
breakaway layup off the opening tip and TCU never trailed. It was the
second loss in a row and third in five games for the 22-8 Longhorns
who haven’t won a conference title since 2008. They play league
champion third-ranked Kansas in their regular-season finale Saturday.
Sir'Jabari Rice had 16 points for Texas.

AMES, Iowa (AP) —
Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger announced that guard Caleb Grill
has been dismissed from the team for a failure to meet expectations.
Grill started 22 of 25 games and was the Cyclones' third-leading
scorer. The fourth-year player from Maize, Kansas, averaged just
under 10 points per game. He started every game this season before
coming off the bench in a Feb. 15 game against TCU. Otzelberger said
at the time Grill needed to rest his sore back. The coach did not
elaborate on the reasons for the dismissal.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) —
Skylar Vann scored a career-high 23 points and Madi Williams scored
19 and No. 16 Oklahoma beat Kansas State 90-86 in overtime. The
contest saw Oklahoma squander a 22-point second-quarter lead while
committing 26 turnovers overall. Kansas State missed 3 of 4 foul
shots in the final six seconds with two-point lead at the end of
regulation squandering the chance to win it. The Wildcats were 18 of
30 overall from the line. Serena Sundell scored a career-high 33
points for Kansas State.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP)
— Offsetting a milestone night from No. 23 Iowa State’s Ashley
Joens, Zakiyah Franklin scored a career-high 31 points and Wyvette
Mayberry added 22 and Kansas ended a 16-game losing streak to the
Cyclones with a 98-93 victory. Joens scored 33 points to jump two
spots to 16th place on the Division I all-time scoring list with
2,935. Joens moved past LSU’s Joyce Walker (2,906) and Penn State’s
Kelly Mazzante (2,919). Franklin shot 12 of 20, including 3 of 4 from
3-point range, and all four of her free throws for the Jayhawks
(18-10, 8-9 Big 12 Conference). Mayberry made four 3s adding six
assists. Freshman Denae Fritz scored a career-high 26 points shooting

There will be no Big 12 regular-season title for the Baylor women for
the first time in 13 seasons. But they can still clinch their 23rd
consecutive season winning at least 20 games in their regular-season
finale at home Saturday before going to the Big 12 and NCAA

teams, and just won at 12th-ranked Texas. After two-time Big 12
player of the year NaLyssa Smith was one of three Baylor players

president of the NCAA this week. At the top of his to-do list is
getting a handle on name, image and likeness compensation for college

racing his SUV against an SUV driven by the recruiting staffer, which
led to the Jan. 15 wreck. Carter had been due in Indianapolis on
Wednesday for the NFL's scouting combine. Police say he is expected
to address the arrest warrant when he returns to Athens. Carter
posted a statement on his Twitter account saying he expects to be
“fully exonerated of any criminal wrongdoing.”

The PGA Tour has approved sweeping changes to its 2024 schedule. That
starts with 16 designated events that includes the majors. Eight of
them will not have cuts and will have fields of no more than 80
players. Commissioner Jay Monahan informed the players of the changes
in a memo. Those changes include the Player Impact Program bonus
being cut from $100 million for 20 players to $50 million for 10
players. The rest of the money is redirected into performance bonus
pools. It also includes room for players on the outside to play their
way into the elite events.

Thursday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

Approved by the Barton Community College Board of Trustees on Tuesday, Megan Besecker and Sabrina Boyd have been added to the Barton Athletic staff.

Besecker fills the vacancy of Head Volleyball Coach while Boyd takes over the Barton Dance Line team.

A Liberal, Kansas, native, Besecker becomes the 16th coach in program history by filling the vacancy following Alan Segal's departure to NCAA Division I San Jose State University.

A former player at Garden City Community College and Tougaloo College (MS), Besecker entered the coaching ranks as Head Coach at Liberal High School before moving up to the college ranks as an assistant at NCAA Division II Emporia State University.

Most recently Besecker served as an assistant coach for the 2022 NJCAA Division I Volleyball National Champion Buccaneers of Florida Southwestern State College under Thais Baziquetto-Allen, her former high school coach who then guided Seward County Community College for three seasons prior to FSW.

"Megan's vast coaching experiences at the high school, club, community college, and NCAA levels, have prepared her well for her first ever collegiate head coaching opportunity," Barton Athletic Director Trevor Rolfs said. "Growing up in Kansas and competing at a conference school, Coach Besecker is well aware of KJCCC history in the sport of volleyball. We are extremely excited to have her on staff, and look forward to her positive energy leading to tremendous success for Barton Volleyball."

Boyd returns to Barton in taking over a program she danced for during the 2014-17 seasons before continuing her talents at Kansas State University on the prestigious "Classy Cats" dance team.

Connected to the dance industry for many years, the Abilene, Kansas, native will work alongside Cheer Head Coach Amanda Schnoebelen in helping the Athletic Department and Cougar Athletics expand its reach and impact on the College community.

"Growing up in Abilene, Kansas, combined with her community college experience here at Barton, and university roots in the state, make Sabrina a great fit to lead the Barton Dance program," said Rolfs. "She has periodically assisted Coach Schnoebelen with big events and performances since graduating from Barton so I'm excited of the possibilities, and the future of both the dance and cheer programs with Sabrina on staff."

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — In their final game at Allen Fieldhouse, Jalen Wilson and fellow Kansas senior Kevin McCullar Jr. not only kept the hardscrabble Jayhawks in front of Texas Tech most of the night but made the play that sealed the win.

Wilson had 21 points to lead all scorers, McCullar added 14 points with a critical basket in the final minute, and the third-ranked Jayhawks held off the Red Raiders 67-63 on Tuesday to clinch at least a share of their NCAA-leading 64th regular-season conference championship.

“It felt so good to win,” Wilson said. “I just wanted to cherish the moment.”

Dajuan Harris had 16 points for the Jayhawks (25-5, 13-4), who would capture the outright title if No. 9 Texas loses to No. 22 TCU on Wednesday night. Otherwise, the Jayhawks would need to beat the Longhorns on Saturday.

Kansas was left clinging to a 61-60 lead after the Red Raiders' De'Vion Harmon could only make the second of two free throws with 56.4 seconds left. But after the Jayhawks raced up the floor, and Wilson failed to get an open look, a loose ball ended up in the hands of McCullar, who merely had to lay it in for a three-point lead.

“It was a loose ball. I seen Harmon reach for it and I was like, ‘I need to get this ball and get this bucket,’” said McCullar, who transferred from Texas Tech. “Nobody was around so I just stuck it in. That play was huge.”

“If anybody was going to make that play, it was Kevin,” Wilson added. "That's just the type of guy he is."

Texas Tech still had time left and called a timeout to set up a play. But Pop Isaacs threw a driving layup off the side of the backboard, and Harris scored in transition for the Jayhawks to put the game out of reach.

“We had to decide for the 3 or try to score and get something quick and went with that,” Red Raiders coach Mark Adams said of the game's crucial possession. “Didn't get the call.”

The Jayhawks improved to 22-1 against Texas Tech (16-14, 5-12) in the Phog with their seventh consecutive win overall, and they have not lost on senior night since the 1983-84 season.

“They made some big plays down the stretch, especially the last couple of minutes. That's what Kansas does,” Adams said. “With their homecourt advantage, they know how to win late in games.”

Harmon had 15 points to lead Texas Tech, which was just 3 of 16 from the 3-point line. Kevin Obanor added 14 points, Fardaws Aimaq had 13 points and 18 rebounds, and Isaacs finished with 11 points.

Wearing retro red uniforms for their senior sendoff, the Jayhawks got off to a frigid start against the defensive-minded Red Raiders. McCullar eventually dropped a couple of 3s minutes apart to give Kansas some breathing room, and Wilson began driving for contested layups, helping the Jayhawks forge a 30-21 lead by the break.

Texas Tech was 1 of 11 from beyond the arc and committed seven turnovers over the first 20 scattershot minutes.

The Red Raiders' cold streak ended there. They scored five quick points to start the second half, nearly wiping out their deficit in their first few trips down floor, and Obanor began to get easy buckets in the paint.

While the Jayhawks kept answering every time Texas Tech got within a possession, they could never put the game away. And when it appeared as if they might as Gradey Dick scored his first points on two free throws to make it 60-55 with about three minutes to go, the Red Raiders answered with back-to-back baskets at the other end.

It wasn't until McCullar's bucket and Harris' breakway layup in the final minute that Kansas could finally celebrate.

Texas Tech was making a late run toward an NCAA Tournament bid with four straight wins, including consecutive victories over Kansas State and Texas. But back-to-back close losses to TCU and Kansas could make a run to the Big 12 Tournament title the only way to make it back to the dance.

Kansas has more Quad 1 wins than any other team in the country, and advanced metrics also love the Jayhawks, who once again reign supreme in the nation's toughest conference. That's probably enough to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, but winning Saturday along with a Big 12 tourney title could get them the top seed overall.

The regular season concludes Saturday when Texas Tech plays Oklahoma State and Kansas visits Texas.

off. Marcus Mariota was cut, Derek Carr became a hot commodity, and
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were expected to discuss how they'll replace
the retired Tom Brady.

Press that Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder's future is on the
agenda to be discussed at upcoming committee meetings in Florida
before the annual NFL meeting in Arizona scheduled for late March.

the team remains a possibility. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay in
October said there was merit to remove Snyder as Commanders owner
amid multiple ongoing investigations. Dan and wife Tanya hired a firm
two weeks later to explore possible transactions related to selling
part or all of the team.


MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — LeBron James’ injury hasn’t changed the
Los Angeles Lakers’ goal of reaching the postseason. Lakers coach
Darvin Ham said Tuesday that James is still going through medical
evaluations before the team makes a decision on how long the NBA’s
career scoring leader may be unavailable after injuring his right
foot Sunday in a victory over Dallas. Ham added that he is uncertain
on an exact return date for James.


UNDATED (AP) - Gavin Lux will miss the season for the Los Angeles
Dodgers because of torn ligaments in his right knee. The 25-year-old
was in line to become their new starting shortstop before getting
hurt in a spring training game. Lux says the toughest part is knowing
the opportunity he had before getting hurt. He ducked to avoid a
throw when running between second and third base during a spring
training game against the San Diego Padres. He then took a couple of
steps before his right knee buckled. He says it was a freak thing.


UNDATED (AP) - Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane says
safety Damar Hamlin has a few more visits to doctors before
determining whether he can pursue his goal of returning to play
football after going into cardiac arrest and having to be
resuscitated on field in January. Beane says all is well with the
test results Hamlin's had so far in providing the update from the
NFL's combine in Indianapolis. He says further testing is required
before specialists and the Bills doctors can provide Hamlin clearance
to return to the field.


NEW YORK (AP) — K'Andre Miller of the New York Rangers has been
suspended three games for unsportsmanlike conduct for spitting at Los
Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty. Miller will miss upcoming
games against Philadelphia, Ottawa and Boston and forfeit $15,000 in
salary. The 23-year-old was given a match penalty and ejected from
the Rangers' game against the Kings on Sunday. Miller on social media
said he did not intend to spit and thanked Doughty for the chance to
explain that in person. Miller's suspension complicates New York's
already murky roster situation with the trade deadline fast
approaching.

reduce the number of plays in games in the name of player safety. A
tweak in clock operating procedures is likely the first step. The
NCAA Football Rules Committee is meeting in Indianapolis this week
and recommendations it forwards and approved in the spring would take
effect next season. The average number of plays per game in the Bowl
Subdivision has hovered at 180 the past three seasons. NFL games
average 154. The NCAA rules committee is looking at keeping the clock
moving when a team makes a first down.

Barton No. 20 in NJCAA rankings

The 7th ranked Barton Community College men's tennis team notched a pair of victories over ranked opponents in its 3-1 trip to Plano, Texas, competing in the Collin College Super Bash.

Fresh off the bus Thursday from making the long trip, the Cougars' grabbed just two wins in the nine matches in dropping a 7-2 loss to host and 6th ranked Collin College.

Returning Friday for one match, Barton rode its doubles play sweep for a 5-4 win over NAIA member Texas A&amp;M University Texarkana to overcome three tiebreak losses in singles action.

On Saturday the Cougars were pretty well dominate, sweeping doubles play and straight-setting 17th ranked Meridian Community College for a 9-0 win before wrapping up the weekend with a 6-3 victory over 10th ranked Jacksonville College.

Now 6-1 on the season, Barton returns to action on Friday at McPherson College (4:00 p.m.) with a Monday, March 6, trip to Southwestern College (1:00 p.m.). The Cougars open the home slate March 17 in the two-day Cougar Classic.

The weekend success was set up by the strong doubles play to begin each match, going 10-2 in the pairings with the 1's undefeated while the next two pairings went 3-1.

The No. 1 doubles tandem of Sebastiao Vilas and Fernando Andre rolled through the weekend undefeated, winning by 8-5 scores over both Collin's 12th ranked Luis Ching and Tristan Scattarregia and Texarkana's 10th ranked NAIA duo of Alejandro Oviedo and Mauricio Velasco. The pair were dominant on Saturday beginning with an 8-2 win knocking off Meridian's 10th ranked Sebastian Hernandez and Loic Hiss before capping the weekend with an 8-1 win over Jacksonville's Logan Stoltz and Andres Ayala.

Both the No. 2 and No. 3 dropped their first matches against Collin on Thursday before winning the next three match-ups.

At the two slot, Barnabas Kalaba and Tsholofelo Tsiang lost 8-5 to the 17th ranked Colin duo then showed scoreboard improvement in their next three by winning on 8-5, 8-4, and 8-3 scores respectively.

In the No. 3 duo, Gustavo Campos and Marno Du Plessis lost 8-6 to Collin, prevailed in the tiebreak over Texarkana, then finished strong with 8-0 and 8-1 victories to cap the weekend.

Two Cougars came out with a winning 3-1 singles record, both at the top of the lineup as the rest of the card finished 6-10 combined.

At the top, 22nd ranked Campos picked up the only singles win on Thursday, bouncing back from a 6-3 first set loss to 30th ranked Seth Seely to win 6-0 and 10-7 in the breaker. The tiebreak wouldn't be as kind on Friday for Campos, again dropping the first set by a 6-4 tally to rally with a 7-5 tiebreak win to eventually fall short on a 10-8 score the Texarkana senior Alejandro Oviedo. On Saturday, Campos prevailed by 6-4 scores over Meridian's 23rd ranked Sebastian Hernandez before chalking up a 7-5, 6-3 win over 44th ranked Edoardo Brustia of Jacksonsville.

Vilas also dropped his Thursday match in the No. 2 spot, falling 6-2, 6-4 against Collin's 33rd ranked Tristian Scattarregia before rattling off a trio of wins. On Friday Vilas recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win over Texarkana's Mauricio Velasco then Saturday won both his matches by 6-2, 6-3 scores beginning with knocking off 23rd ranked Loic Hiss of Meridian capped by a victory over Jacksonville's 50th ranked Andres Ayala.

Barton came up short in four tiebreak losses, Kalaba being the hard-luck loser in two of his No. 3 singles matches to finish 1-3 on the weekend. Ranked 41st in the November national rankings, Kalaba's first loss began with a 6-0, 6-3 against 34th ranked Luis Ching of Collin. On Friday, Kalaba dropped the first 7-5 set against Texarkana's Andrew Otzenberger, took the second 6-4 before coming up short 10-7 in the tiebreak. Notching his lone win by 6-4, 6-3 scores over Meridian's Will McCullough, Kalaba was down 6-3 to Jacksonville's Logan Stolz but turned the tide with a 6-3 win before eventually falling 10-8.

In the No. 4, Andre went down 6-3, 6-2 to Collin's 27th ranked Joseph Restrepo on Thursday, rolled to a 6-3 sweep of Texarkana's Felipe De la Carrera on Friday, then dispatched Parker Lyons of Meridian by 6-0, 6-2 scores. Winding down the weekend with Jacksonville's Franco Vedda, Andre recovered from a 6-3 first set to even the match 6-2 before falling 10-5 in the tie break to finish 2-2 on the trip.

Tsiang's lone tiebreak action came on Thursday's No. 5 matchup, falling behind 6-3, forcing extra play with a 6-1 win, to fall short in the upset bid of Collin's 39th ranked Gianni La Mantia 10-6 in the breaker. Falling 6-4, 6-2 Friday to Texarkana's Iker Alonso, Tsiang split his Saturday's matches in blanking Meridian's Denzel Jones before dropping twin 6-3 scores to Jacksonville's Daniel Pinzon.

Anchoring the lineup at the No. 6, Du Plessis went 2-2 with losses coming against a ranked opponent and the other in a tiebreaker. Collin's 32nd ranked Djordje Kurcubic took Thursday's match 6-2, 6-1 with Friday's match against Texarkana's Marc Molina slipping through the grasp by winning the first set in a tiebreaker but dropping the second 6-2 and falling short in the deciding points by a 10-7 score. Du Plessis then gave Barton its second 6-0 set sweep against Meridian by keeping Nathan Smith scoreless, wrapping up the weekend with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jacksonville's Brock Dawson.

Barton Women move up one spot to No. 16 in NJCAA rankings

The 6th ranked Barton Community College women's tennis team picked up three victories over ranked opponents this weekend competing in the Collin College Super Bash held in Plano, Texas.

Making the long trip and stepping onto the court Thursday, the Cougars took a 2-1 doubles lead and battled through to gain four singles victories to knock off host 8th ranked Collin College 6-3.

Taking a day of rest in watching the 7th ranked men's team pull out a 5-4 win over NAIA member Texas A&amp;M University Texarkana, the women returned to action on Saturday in registering a pair of 7-2 victories over 13th ranked Meridian Community College and 15th ranked Weatherford College.

Improving to 5-0 on the season, Barton returns to action on Friday at McPherson College (4:00 p.m.) with a Monday, March 6, trip to Southwestern College (1:00 p.m.). The Cougars open the home slate March 17 in the two-day Cougar Classic.

Doubles action produced seven victories on the weekend as both the No. 2 and 3 tandems won all their matches.

In the No. 2 slot, 10th ranked Luciana Braga and Azul Barrios pulled out a Thursday tiebreaker win over Collin then on Saturday dominated Meridian 8-0 before dispatching Weatherford 8-3.

The No. 3 duo of Carmen Lyons and Ana Vasilis won 8-5 over Collin before chalking up the second Cougar 8-0 blanking against Meridian to wrap up their weekend due to Weatherford unable to fill a 3rd slot tandem.

The lone losses in doubles play came at the always tough No. 1 as 10th ranked Clara Penido and Tshegofatso Tsiang dropped an 8-5 loss to Colin followed by an 8-2 defeat against Meridian, rebounding with a 7-3 tiebreaker win over Weatherford.

In singles play, Vasilis was the lone victor in each of her matches, rebounding from 6-3 setback to Collin's Margaryta Bugaienko to even the match with a 6-0 score then taking the tiebreaker 10-5. The No. 6 slot player blanked Meridian in straight sets on Saturday but didn't play her final match due to Weatherford's lacking of the last two spots on the singles matches. Doubles partner Lyons went 1-1 in her No. 5 singles matches, dropping a 6-2, 6-1 loss Thursday to Collin before nearly blanking Meridian by 6-0, 6-1 scores.

At the top of the lineup, 12th ranked Penido went 2-1 beginning with a marathon 4-6, 7-6 (1), 12-10 victory over 15th ranked Larissa Correa of Collin. Penido's Saturday match against Meridian also went to tiebreak, dropping the first set 6-1, winning the second 7-5, but falling 11-9 in the breaker to spoil the upset over 5th ranked Ana De Mata. Penido capped the weekend with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Weatherford.

Three other Cougars join Penido in the national rankings released last November with each of them going 2-1.
