of the ball but also free up more than $20 million in salary cap

The New York Giants have reached a new four-year contract with
quarterback Daniel Jones and put a franchise tag on running back

with the deadline for a franchise tag minutes away. The team
announced that Barkley received a nonexclusive franchise tag, which
means he’s able to negotiate a contract with other teams. He will
earn more than $10 million this season if he does not agree to a
long-term deal before training camp.


INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The
process of sorting out this year's No. 1 overall draft pick began at
the NFL's annual scouting combine. It's far from over. After seeing
Anthony Richardson of Florida wow scouts with an impressive workout
and Bryce Young of Alabama measure in shorter than expected, the next
step for teams will be attending pro days and even more testing.
Richardson and Young were just two examples of players who did well
in Indianapolis. Many others weren't as fortunate.

was probably an easy call for the league, it sometimes can be a fine

Jaden Wiley delivered the big hit blasting a three-run go-ahead home run to left field helping the Barton Community College baseball team to a split doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Kasnas City Community College.

Wiley's big hit came in the top of the 10th inning powering the Cougars to a 7-4 victory over the Blue Devils in game one securing Barton's fifth straight series win to open the season. KCK utilized a seven run two-out rally in the home sixth in the nightcap to spoil the Cougars sweep attempt.

Snapping its' 12-game winning streak, Barton now sits at 14-2 overall while the Blue Devils conclude the weekend with a 9-4 mark.

The Cougars will return home to open a three-game weekend set against North Iowa Area Community College. The series will get underway Friday in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Lawson-Biggs Field before concluding with a nine-inning finale Saturday afternoon scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.

The Barton Community College swimming teams made a strong push to finish up the 2023 season at the NJCAA Championships with the women claiming hardware with a 3rd place standing while the men were a solid 4th place overall.

Competing in four grueling days at Burt Flickinger Athletic Center in Buffalo, New York, the women moved up from fourth in the final day of action compiling 533 total points to leap over Iowa Central's 458 accumulation. Indian River continued its dominance with 1328 points while Southwestern Oregon won the battle for runner-up to distance Barton by 150 points in compiling 683 points.

The Cougar men held steady in the 4th position in each day, compiling 460 points, 173.5 behind 3rd place Iowa Central and 113 points ahead of Iowa Lakes' 347. Indian River ran away with the expected title with 1274 points with Southwestern Oregon claiming runner-up honor with 796.5 points.

Barton Swimming places top four at National Championships

A few breaks here and there and hardware would have returned back to Great Bend but overall it was another successful weekend for the Barton Community College track and field team competing at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships held this weekend at Washburn University's Indoor Facility in Topeka, Kansas.

The 2nd ranked women claimed five individual titles in compiling 83 points, falling just 1.5 points shy of the national runner-up Cloud County's 84.5 total and a mere .5 points from South Plains' third place total of 83.5 points. The Cougars were solidly in 4th place by thirty-five points over fifth place Iowa Western. New Mexico captured the title with 116 points.

On the men's side the 4th ranked Cougars claimed one individual title in a dogfight for third place hardware, compiling 48.5 points for 5th place overall. Barton was left 12.5 points from 3rd place Iowa Western and 9.5 points from 3rd place Iowa Central and eight points ahead of Cloud County. South Plains and New Mexico shared the crown with 107 points.

Monday on Sports Day

Great Bend High School graduate Matt Keeley is coaching nearly 800 miles away from his hometown in Sunrise, Ariz. But with a trip to the NAIA National Championships, Keeley is coming back to Kansas. By winning a second straight Golden State Athletic Conference title last week, the Ottawa University Arizona (OUAZ) Spirit will play in the national tournament at Park City's Hartman Arena this week.

Keeley led Great Bend to the Class 5A state tournament as a senior in 2000. He followed as a two-time All-American at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe. Keeley spent several years as an assistant coach before being named the first head coach at OUAZ in 2017. He's made a steady climb with the Spirit, leading them to their first national tournament a year ago with a 25-9 record. This year's squad takes a 21-9 record into Hartman Arena. Keeley has a 90-77 record at OUAZ, but the Spirit are 46-18 over the past two seasons.

Keeley has helped build the OUAZ program from the ground up. The school used a local high school gym for its first two years, but now has a four-court, 14 basket facility near the Kansas City Royals spring training facility.

Keeley and the Spirit enter the national tournament as the No. 7 seed, and will take on No. 10 seed Baker University at 2 p.m. on March 7. The winner will play either No. 2 Oklahoma Wesleyan or No. 15 Concordia (Neb.) in round two. The final 16 teams in the tournament will advance to the 85th Annual NAIA Men's Basketball National Championships March 13-18 in Kansas City, Mo.

Tickets are available at Hartman Arena, or the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) is streaming all opening-round games on the KCAC Network, with each stream costing $9.99.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Craig Porter Jr. scored 24 points and Wichita State rolled to a 69-49 victory over South Florida on Sunday.

Porter also had five rebounds, five assists, and five blocks for the Shockers (16-14, 9-9 American Athletic Conference). Xavier Bell scored 11 points. James Rojas totaled 10 points and six rebounds.

The Bulls (14-17, 7-11) were led by Serrel Smith Jr. with 11 points and two steals. Tyler Harris added 10 points and Russel Tchewa pitched in with nine points and six rebounds.

Wichita State took the lead with 12:13 left in the first half and did not give it up. The score was 36-33 at halftime.

inappropriate, unacceptable, and racially insensitive comment” he
made to a player. Athletic director Kirby Hocutt says he was made
aware of the incident Friday. The school says Adams was encouraging a
player to be more receptive to coaching in a meeting. Adams referred
to a Bible verse that addresses slaves serving their masters. The
school says Adams addressed the matter with his team and apologized.
The school hasn't said who will fill in for Adams at the Big 12
Tournament.

putt to an inch for par on the 18th. He finished with a 72 and a
one-shot win over Rory McIlroy and Harris English. Jordan Spieth,
defending champion Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay and Tyrrell
Hatton were two behind. Kitayama moves to No. 19 in the world.

LAS VEGAS (AP) —
William Byron took the lead on the second-to-last lap of overtime to
win the NASCAR Cup Series race at Las Vegas and put an exclamation
mark on a dominant day for Hendrick Motorsports. The top three
drivers were from Hendrick, with Byron beating teammates Kyle Larson
and Alex Bowman. Bowman won last year’s March race at Las Vegas.
This is Byron’s fifth career victory in his six seasons. He led 176
laps and won both stages.

Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins says there's no timetable for
Ja Morant to return to the team. The two-time All-Star wasn't in Los

moment.” The coach says Morant knows he's made “difficult
decisions and poor choices” that he has to be accountable for. The
23-year-old guard was the subject of another league investigation in

— Major League Baseball says it won't impose any discipline against
Chicago White Sox right-hander Mike Clevinger after completing an
investigation of domestic abuse allegations. In a statement, the
commissioner’s office says its investigation included interviews of
more than 15 people, including Clevinger and a woman who said she is
the mother of Clevinger’s child, as well as thousands of electronic
communications and other documents. Clevinger has voluntarily agreed
to submit to evaluations by the joint treatment boards under the CBA
and to follow any recommendations.

Monday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

The Barton Community College wrestling team would see both of their national qualifiers earn one win apiece as the 2022-23 season would come to a close on day one of the NJCAA National Championships held at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Representing the Cougars at the national meet would be third-year sophomore in the 157-division Dawson Chavez and first time qualifier 133-division Stephan Baldwin. The pair of Cougars concluded the team standings with a 43rd place finish as a team.

Chavez would face a tall task in his opening bout of the tournament drawing 10th seeded Landon Gode of Rochester, falling in a close 5-2 decision, after leading early 2-1 through the opening period. The Andale, KS native would response with vengeance needing just 4:21 to earn a pin over Xavier Byrne of Henry Ford keeping his season alive before bowing out in the second round of the consolation bracket dropping another tight decision 5-7, to Jett Nelson of Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Baldwin would get off to a strong start in his opening match earning a 6-4 upset decision over fourth seeded Brenden Ramsey from Jamestown to advance into the Round of 16. Ninth seeded, Tuvsin Zunnbayan of Harper would be waiting for Baldwin, as the match would go the way of Zunnbayan with an 11-0 major decision. With his tournament life on the line, Baldwin would then face ninth ranked Romelle Person-Williams of Labette Community College having the season end by an 18-3 technical fall. Finishing eighth at the West/Central Districts, Baldwin was rewarded with a national bid having the next highest placing following a scratched West/Central qualifier unable to compete.

Barton Wrestling concludes season at the NJCAA National Championships

The Barton Community College bowling team placed 6th on the men's side and 7th in the women's at the NJCAA National Championships held the past three days at the Airport Lanes in Cheektowaga, New York.

Griffin Peterson etched his name in program history, becoming the second male and fourth overall All-America performance with his 6th place individual standing of the 130-man field.

The Cougars finished strong on its last of three days of competition, making a spot climb into the 6th position with 13,421 pins to distance Mid Michigan College by 99 pins while coming up 165 pins shy of moving up into the fifth spot.

Angelina Leeper bettered teammate Courtney Kitchen by just 18 pins to finish 22nd overall of the 100-participant field to grab team high bragging honors, as the duo compiled 2174 and 2156 pins respectively.

Barton men finish 6th with women 7th at National Championships

The Barton Community College softball team continued its early season roll of conference opponents by sweeping Pratt Community College on Saturday in Pratt 16-0 and 7-4.

Barton shortened the opener to five innings by plating thirteen runs in the final two frames before scoring runs in six of game two's seven innings to complete the sweep.

Winners of eight straight, Barton improves to 6-0 in league play and 11-6 overall while dropping Pratt to 0-6 in conference and 1-11 on the season. Next up is a Monday non-conference 2:00 p.m. first pitch at Fort Scott Community College before flipping sides of the state with a return to conference action Wednesday in a 2:00 p.m. first pitch at Colby Community College.

Jessica Morgan improved to 4-2 in the circle by scattering two hits in the five innings, striking out six while walking just one.

Kayden Smith connected on her first home run of the season, a three-run shot to cap the Cougars' seven run fourth inning to go 2-4 in the game. Lani Dryden joined Smith as the lone multi-hit opener going 2-4 out of the No. 9 slot.

Jaysa Anderson, who connected for a home run in the opener, collected hits in both games in running her consecutive hit streak to ten.

Sydni Williams pitched the final four innings of game two in picking up her first victory of the year in allowing just two hits, walking two, and striking out three.

Barton scored the opening tally of game two, but Pratt was able to plate three in the first at-bat on four hits. Kaylee Richardson settled in for a scoreless second frame but two walks and a hit chased her from the contest with Williams shutting out the Beavers the rest of the way.

Halie Stoneking and Anderson led the offense with two hits each as Anderson drove in two of Barton's runs.

The Barton Community College baseball team held off a late Kansas City Kansas Community College rally earning an 8-6 road win Saturday afternoon at the KCKCC Baseball Complex.

Opening a three-game set, the Cougars built an 8-0 lead after 4.5-innings and survived late following a pair of three run innings from the Blue Devils to earn their 11th straight and fifth straight road victory.

Improving to 13-1 on the season while KCK falls to 8-3 overall, Barton will look to secure the weekend series Sunday afternoon in a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.

Lasting five innings, starter Owen Reynolds worked four shutout innings before permitting three runs in the fifth to close his afternoon. Striking out three, the lefty scattered three hits and three walks in the winning effort improving to 3-0 on the year.

Tyrus Riley collected his second save of the season getting the final two outs after the Blue Devils pulled within two runs with a three run ninth.

Dryden Howse reached base in all five-plate appearances finishing 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and walks.

Riley Silva drove in a team high three RBIs highlighted by an RBI triple in the top of the first to give Barton a 1-0 lead.

Owen Bailey and Robby Bolin concluded the multi-hit performances each recording a pair of hits and driving in two runs.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Kansas had already won the Big 12 championship by the time the Jayhawks made their last trip of the season down to Texas.

The Longhorns sent them home with a message: The league tournament promises to be every bit as rugged as the regular season.

Sir'Jabari Rice scored 23 points and a smothering defensive effort carried No. 9 Texas to a 75-59 win over No. 3 Kansas on Saturday that earned the Longhorns a second-place finish in the Big 12.

Texas entered the day in a three-way tie for second, but the win and losses by Kansas State and Baylor left the Longhorns alone in the spot. A loss at TCU four days earlier denied Texas a chance to earn a share of the league title.

“We wanted confidence going into postseason,” Rice said. “We had to get ourselves focused and re-centered (after the losses).”

Tyrese Hunter made 9 of 10 free throws and scored 20 points for the Longhorns (23-8, 12-6).

Big 12 scoring and rebounding leader Jalen Wilson led Kansas (25-6, 13-5) with 23 points and 10 boards as the Jayhawks' seven-game win streak ended.

Texas swarmed Kansas with a defensive effort that frustrated Wilson and the Jayhawks from the opening tip.

Kansas scored just 12 points over the first 12 minutes and missed nine of 12 3-point attempts in the half. Wilson, who scored just two points when Kansas beat Texas on Feb. 6, struggled to find open shots or even open passes.

Hunter made consecutive deep 3-pointers late in the half as Texas built a 32-24 lead at the break.

The Longhorns quickly stretched the lead in opening minutes of the second half. Dylan Disu scored the first five points after halftime, and Rice's 3-pointer pushed the lead to 15.

Kansas got within eight when Gradey Dick made consecutive 3-pointers, his first baskets of the game, before Texas answered with six consecutive points. Rice then ran off seven straight points, including a 3-pointer from the left corner, and Texas led 68-52 with 3:30 to play.

Rice scored his 23 points in 27 minutes off the bench.

“Texas was turned up. Defensively they made us play outside our comfort zone," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "We weren’t any good. We got what we deserved today.”

Kansas: The Big 12 champs won a league many consider the toughest in the country and are still a contender for a No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament. The defending national champions head into the Big 12 tourney having won nine of their last 12.

“Our season is really just beginning now,” Wilson said. “We’re playing for a lot, trying to get a No. 1 overall seed. You can’t get too high after wining the conference and can’t get too low after a loss like this.”

Texas: Interim coach Rodney Terry's future with the program was probably always going to depend on the Longhorns' postseason success. He might have eased that pressure had Texas won at least a share of the program's first conference title in 15 years. But finishing second with an emphatic win over the league champ is better than many would have predicted when Texas fired coach Chris Beard in midseason.

“My message is to continue to be a hungry team,” Terry said. “I think we have a team as good as anybody.”

Saturday was the senior-day sendoff for five Texas players. The Longhorns have one of the oldest lineups in college basketball.

Marcus Carr is in his sixth season, and Timmy Allen, Christian Bishop and Rice are fifth-year players. Dylan Disu completed his fourth season. They account for an average of 54 points and 19 rebounds per game.

Texas went 16-1 at Moody Center, the new arena that replaced the 45-year-old Erwin Center. One big change was to move the student section behind the team benches.

“We've created a home court (advantage) at Texas basketball. People know if they come into Moody, it’s going to be hard to get a win,” Terry said. “The environment we’ve crated here, our guys love playing here.”

The Big 12 Tournament starts Wednesday in Kansas City, Missouri. Kansas will be the No. 1 seed. Texas will be No. 2.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Emmitt Matthews’ last regular-season home game at West Virginia was even better than he had envisioned.

Matthews played for Washington a year ago before returning to West Virginia, where he had spent his first three seasons. When Washington's Senior Day ceremony was held almost a year ago to the day, Matthews said he closed his eyes and imagined being back in Morgantown.

On Saturday his eyes were wide open and his smile went from ear to ear as he and five other seniors walked onto the court with loved ones during pregame introductions. And their energy eventually translated into one of their best efforts of the season.

Matthews, Erik Stevenson and Kedrian Johnson led an offensive onslaught in their home finale Saturday and West Virginia gave its NCAA Tournament hopes a big boost with an 89-81 victory over No. 11 Kansas State.

Matthews, who played all 40 minutes, then joined Stevenson, Johnson and West Virginia’s other seniors to sing John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” one last time in their own arena before going into the student section to celebrate.

“This is everything I imagined and then some,” Matthews said.

Stevenson finished with 27 points, Johnson added 23, Matthews had 20 points and Tre Mitchell scored 14 for West Virginia (18-13, 7-11 Big 12), which has won three of four heading into the conference tournament.

“That was special, for sure,” said Stevenson, who made 11 of 22 field goal tries, including five 3-pointers, and has averaged nearly 25 points over his last five games. “I can tell you that basket gets bigger and bigger every time I make one. I've just got to credit my teammates for finding me.”

Before a sellout crowd, West Virginia rallied from 10 points down to take a 39-37 halftime lead and never trailed after that, shooting 58% (15 of 26) from the floor in the second half.

Kansas State (23-8, 11-7) was within 61-57 when Johnson blocked Markquis Nowell’s layup attempt, and Stevenson hit a 3-pointer at the other end of the court. Stevenson hit another 3 less than 2 minutes later for a 69-59 lead with 8:49 remaining.

Kansas State went scoreless over a nearly three-minute stretch and the Mountaineers padded their lead at the free-throw line, going 7 of 8 en route to their largest lead, 84-69, with 2:42 left.

“They played like seniors on Senior Night are supposed to play, so credit to them,” Kansas State coach Jerome Tang said. “What they were able to do, especially in the second half, we couldn't guard them. They were really good.”

Kansas State saw its four-game winning streak snapped. Nowell and Keyontae Johnson each scored 24 points for the Wildcats and Cam Carter finished with 13.

Kansas State guard Desi Sills missed the game because he was attending a funeral. Tang said he'll be back for the Big 12 tournament.

Kansas State could drop a few spots in the AP Top 25 poll.

Kansas State: The Wildcats scored the first eight points of the game but couldn’t keep the momentum going. Despite the loss, Kansas State capped its best regular season since 2018-19, when they went 24-7.

West Virginia: The Mountaineers had a 22-9 advantage at the free-throw line and forced 20 turnovers. West Virginia committed four turnovers in the second half after committing 12 before halftime.

“That was pretty much the focus at halftime was to stop turning the ball over," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. "I think the majority of our turnovers led to their scoring in the first half.

”We've gotten a lot better. Our older guys have really stepped up."

WACO, Texas (AP) — Jaren Holmes had 16 points and Iowa State ended a four-game losing streak with a 73-58 win over seventh-ranked Baylor. The 18-12 Cyclones played their first game Saturday since the dismissal of veteran guard Caleb Grill from the team earlier this week. They built as much as a 14-point lead before halftime. When Baylor had a 10-0 run early in the second half to cut its deficit to 36-32 with 15:29 left, the Cyclones responded with a spurt of 11 points in a row of their own. Adam Flagler had 20 points with five 3-pointers for the 22-9 Bears.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Tanner Groves scored a season-high 23 points to go with 10 rebounds and Oklahoma rode a hot start all the way, beating No. 22 TCU 74-60 in the regular-season finale for both teams. Grant Sherfield added 20 points and Milos Uzan had 12 for Oklahoma. The Sooners made their first six shots and improved their record this season to 15-16. LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Caleb Asberry knocked down seven 3-pointers and Oklahoma State held on late to beat Texas Tech 71-68 in the Big 12 Conference regular season finale. The Cowboys, who had lost five straight games, four to ranked teams, going into the game, will be the No. 7 seed in the conference tournament and play 10th-seeded Oklahoma on Wednesday. Texas Tech is the No. 9 seed and plays eighth-seeded West Virginia, also Wednesday.

The Tigers held an eight-point halftime lead only to see the Bronchos slip by in the second half and hold on by a score of 55-51. FHSU moved to 21-9 overall, while UCO moved to 26-4 and will play Northwest Missouri State in the championship game Sunday.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Hendrick Motorsports says Chase Elliott is out indefinitely after undergoing a successful three-hour surgery to repair a fractured tibia. General manager Jeff Andrews says there is no timeline on when the star NASCAR driver will return. Elliott injured his left leg Friday while snowboarding in Colorado. Josh Berry will drive the No. 9 Chevrolet in place of Elliott in Sunday’s Cup race in Las Vegas. Andrews said the process has begun to attain a waiver from NASCAR for Elliott to be eligible for this year’s playoffs.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Kurt Kitayama is hanging on at Bay Hill. Kitayama recovered from an early double bogey and finished with a birdie for an even-par 72. That gives him a one-shot lead over defending champion Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland going into the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Scheffler finished with three straight birdies to overcome a rocky start. He shot 68. Hovland had a 66. Also in the mix are past Bay Hill winners Tyrrell Hatton and Rory McIlroy. Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas are four behind. Bay Hill is likely to be as brittle and baked as usual for Sunday's final round.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Jon Jones ended a three-year sabbatical from the UFC, moved up to its highest weight class and emphatically won the heavyweight belt Saturday night with a first-round submission over Ciryl Gane. The 35-year-old Jones took Gane to the mat just a little more into the round, and won with a guillotine chokeat 2:04 in UFC 285. For Jones, this was his first fight in three years and his first in the heavyweight division. The former light heavyweight champion is regarded as UFC’s greatest fighter.

KVITFJELL, Norway (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin finished seventh at a World Cup super-G affected by changing weather conditions as the American skier missed out on a record-tying 86th career victory. Shiffrin was among the early starters when low clouds caused flat light and snowfall slowed most racers. Later starters benefited from improved conditions when skies cleared. Nina Ortlieb with bib 31 led an Austrian sweep of the podium. Shiffrin's next race is a giant slalom in Sweden on Friday. The American needs one victory to match Ingemar Stenmark’s total on the all-time overall winners list.

Sunday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

On January 2, millions of people held their collective breaths as Buffalo Bills’ defensive back Damar Hamlin dropped to the ground in a Monday Night Football game on national television. 

A victim of cardiac arrest, medical professionals rushed to his aid to enact a well-thought-out Emergency Action Plan (EAP). Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) were utilized, and Hamlin was quickly taken by ambulance to an area hospital in Cincinnati.

While there were some tense moments in the days to follow, Hamlin recovered and continues to make progress toward a potential return to the NFL. The quick enactment of the EAP, along with CPR and use of the AED, saved Hamlin’s life.

We are pleased to share that there have been some equally heroic moments recently at the high school level.

In late January in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, a Gatlinburg-Pittman girls basketball player, Kendl Reagan, collapsed during a game against Union County High School. Like the more publicized pro football game, quick enactment of the EAP and use of an AED saved Reagan’s life.

Colton Jenkins of Covenant Health, who serves as the school’s athletic trainer, started CPR and activated the AED. Once Reagan was stabilized and her pulse regained, she was taken by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Knoxville and has since been cleared by a cardiologist. Following the incident, Jenkins offered the following thoughts:

“Tomorrow is not promised, let alone how it is going to turn out. Always have a plan in place in case that ‘it can’t happen here’ scenario hits. When you have a plan, know your part and practice it. Never underestimate training and mental repetition, because if you have not mentally made up your mind that you will do a hard task like CPR, you might freeze when it becomes reality.”

In early February, one of the officials working the girls basketball game in Argyle, New York, between Argyle-Fort Edward High School and Whitehall High School collapsed on the court. Thanks to a visiting EMT from Whitehall, a nurse from Argyle and an AED located about 20 seconds away in the school hallway, the official’s life was saved.

Boyd Hunt, the Whitehall girls basketball coach, was the first to the referee’s side. Hunt helped with chest compressions before the AED was utilized.

“As much as people dread all the trainings that we do, that’s the reason we do this,” Hunt told Pete Tobey in an article in the Glens Falls (New York) Post-Star newspaper. “We all worked very coordinated to save his life. That’s what you’re hoping to do when you do the training.”      

About this time a year ago, Ashley Cowan, athletic trainer at Bear Creek High School in Lakewood, Colorado, responded to a crisis. Near the end of the first quarter of a Bear Creek-Heritage girls basketball game, an official collapsed on the court due to a malfunction of his pacemaker.

After a shock was delivered, the pair continued to administer CPR until the official was once again alert and breathing. Another life was saved.These case examples show that AEDs – in concert with CPR and implementation of a previously designed Emergency Action Plan – can save a person’s life.The NFHS kick-started a nationwide effort several years ago to make sure every school has an AED. Through its NFHS Foundation, the NFHS distributed almost 1,200 units to schools and state association offices in 2018 and 2019. Since then, schools have ordered more than 1,000 additional units from the distributor.Schools must have an AED – preferably more than one unit – in high-traffic areas and near athletic competition. Every school needs to have a working AED on the property – and staff members need to be trained in use of the machine.However, the first step is to establish – and regularly practice – an Emergency Action Plan. The best-case scenario is for a school to employ a certified athletic trainer to establish and carry out the EAP. In some settings, this task may fall to a coach, athletic administrator or other school personnel. Following are some resources from the NFHS to help in implementing an EAP: School administrators, athletic directors, coaches, parents and students should also be made aware of the following resources from the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA) and the Korey Stringer Institute (KSI):Throughout its 103-year history, minimizing the risk of injury in high school sports and activities has been one of the most important roles of the NFHS. With more than 7.6 million participants in high school sports, we know that injuries will occur; however, we also know that lives can be saved if plans are in place to handle times of crisis.
