EUGENE, Ore. - There may be no greater legend in American running lore than Steve Prefontaine. Before his untimely death in 1975, at the age of 24, Prefontaine held every American distance record between 2,000 and 10,000 meters. For 47 years, the Prefontaine Classic at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field has served as a living memorial to the running great. This Saturday and Sunday, the 48th edition of the event, which doubles as the Wanda Diamond League finals, will feature many of the world's top track and field athletes.

The World Track and Field Championships were held in Budapest, Hungary from Aug. 19-27. Several gold medalists from that event will be in Eugene the Classic. Several of those athletes opened the weekend with a press conference in downtown Eugene Friday morning.

Not always the biggest attraction at a meet, the 2023 season has been a big one for pole vault athletes. On Saturday, reigning world co-champions Katie Moon of the United States and Nina Kennedy of Australia will again go head to head. The pair gained fame in Budapest after Kennedy reset a pair of national records to keep up with the then-reigning world champion Moon. When they both bowed out with identical effort on the day, they agreed to share the 2023 gold. Moon was shocked by some negative reactions and responded on social media.

"People see elite athletes and assume it's that 'win at all cost' mentality," she said. "At the end of the day, it was absolutely the right thing for us. I was just wanted to give some insight and some insight on the pole vault in general. I love the sport and want it to be out there more."

On the men's side, all American-born Mondo Duplantis did the last time he was in Eugene was set a new world record for the fifth time. Representing Sweden, he's since added to that record, raising the bar to 20 feet, five inches (6.22m). A tough field includes American KC Lightfoot with a season best of 6.07m, and Ernest John of the Philippines with a season best of 6.00m. Americans Sam Kendricks and Christopher Nilsen, and Australia's Kurtis Marschall, are all at 5.95m. The smaller field could mean a shorter event in Eugene, not the five hours the competition may take at larger events.

"It's nice when you can cut down the time," Duplantis said. "Our legs will be just a little more fresh out there."

100m dash: Noah Lyles (USA) won three world championships in the 100m and 200m dashes, and as a member of the 4x100m relay team. Lyles, now coached by former Barton Community College coach Lance Brauman, ranks third all-time in the 200m dash (American record holder), and his 19.47s from London in July is the fastest time in the world this year. Lyles, however, will only be running the 100m dash in Eugene on Saturday. Lyles and fellow American Christian Coleman have both run a season-best of 9.83s to lead the field, and four other sprinters have best times under 9.9s this year.&nbsp;

"It's now a victory lap," Lyles said. "I remember coming to Prefontaine after the Olympics. My mom was telling me some that some girl in the stands was like, 'Where's Sydney (McLaughlin-Levrone)?' She was so distraught that Sydney wasn't there. I was like, wow, I guess I didn't realize how much people just want to see you after the moment happens. We have to treat this like our victory parade."

The women's race will also take place Saturday. American Sha'Carri Richardson is coming off a gold medal at Worlds with the sixth-fastest time ever of 10.65s. Jamaica's Shericka Jackson has also gone as fast as 10.65s this season, and she finished second to Richardson in Budapest. Four of the nine sprinters in Saturday's 100m dash field have finished in 10.85s or faster this year.

200m dash: This event will close out the 2023 Diamond League season Sunday. With no Lyles in the field, American Erriyon Knighton becomes the favorite for the title. Knighton ran a 19.75 in Budapest to finish second to Lyles' 19.52. Knighton's season-best of 19.72s ranks third in the world. American Kenneth Bednarek ranks No. 6 in the world this year at 19.79s.

For the women, Jamaica's Jackson just missed the world record in Budapest by 0.07 seconds when she ran a 21.41 to take the world lead by 0.19s. America's Gabby Thomas previously held the world lead this year. Jackson, the two-time world champion in the 200m, went for the world record a week ago. Jackson is the only runner in the Classic field to finish under 22 seconds this season. Anthonique Strachan (Bahamas) and Daryll Neita (Great Britain) have season bests of 22.15 and 22.16, respectively.

400m dash: The women's side is a loaded event will feature world champion Mariledy Paulino (Dominican Republic), who is the only athlete in a loaded field to finish under 49 seconds. Notably absent will be America's Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, who has the fastest time in the world this year after converting to the event as the world-record holder in the 400m hurdles. Poland's Natalia Kaczmarek is a strong finisher who finished second to Paulino in Budapest and currently ranks No. 5 in the world. The Netherlands' Lieke Klaver also has a top-10 world time this season and was a member of the world-champion 4x400m relay team.

Five of the eight competitors on the mens' side have run faster than 45 seconds this year. Jamaica's Rusheen McDonald ranks No. 3 in the the world this year in 44.03. Wayde Van Niekerk, the world-record holder from South Africa, will not be in action. America's Vernan Norwood led the Diamond League in points this season and enters with a season-best of 44.26.

800m run: All nine entries have personal bests at 1:43, making the field hyper competitive. Eight of those runners have finished faster than 1:44 this year. Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Wyclife Kinyamal rank No. 1 and 2 in the world this year, respectively, at 1:43.20 and 1:43.22. America's lone entry is former University of Kansas standout Bryce Hoppel with a season best of 1:43.95.

The womens' race should be one of the best on the weekend. Kenya's Mary Moraa is coming off a world title in Budapest with a season best of 1:56.03. Great Britain's Keely Hodgkinson finished behind Moraa at Worlds but has the only sub-1:56 time this season. America's Athing Mu won the world title in 2022 but ran third in Budapest. 

1500m run: The field gets bigger for the distance races. Kenya's Faith Kipyegon has set several world records this year, including in the 1500m where she became the first female runner to finish under 3:50. Great Britain's Laura Muir has been running well with a season best of 3:55.34, and Australia's Jessica Hull and Linden Hall, separated by just 0.02s, have been mainstays in Diamond League events this year. The United States will have three runners in action, led by Melissa Courtney-Bryant (3:58.01).

Bowerman Mile: The men will move up to the mile to close out Saturday's competition. Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen has a pair of world records to his name, most recently the 2000m set just a week ago. However, Ingebrigsten settled for second in the 1500m run at worlds (he later won the 5000m). His personal-best mile time of 3:46.46 makes him a favorite. Australia's Stewart McSweyn enters with a personal best of 3:48.37. Ingebrigtsen said there will be a fast pace for the race but did not disclose the expectation during Friday's press conference.

"I think it all depends on the conditions," he said. "I think we all know Hayward Field is a difficult track to manage and run fast, especially in distance events. With 300 meters to go, there's always headwind. That can be a little bit tricky. It all depends if we can get lucky for a couple of laps."

The Classic features more sub four-minute miles than any other meet in the world. American Yared Nuguse did not discount the idea of chasing the U.S. mile record of 3:46.91.

"I ran 3:47 indoors," Nuguse said, "so I feel really confident I'd be able to push out a little further with the athletes being a little faster."

"Just stick to me as long as you can," Ingebrigtsen joked to Nuguse.

Javelin: It's always an event when India's Neeraj Chopra shows up. With more than 7 million followers on Instragram, Chopra is one of the most popular athletes on the planet. He also happens to be the leader in the javelin field Friday with a season best of 88.77m. He reached 88.17m for the Worlds gold in Budapest. Two throwers at the Classic have personal bests beyond 90 feet.

Shot put: If Mondo Duplantis and Neeraj Chopra are stars in their events, so too is America's Ryan Crouser in the shot. Crouser's season best of 23.56m is also his personal best. That happens to be a world record. Crouser is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and a two-time world champion. American teammate Joe Kovacs has been his best competition with a season best of 22.69m and a personal best of 23.23m.

On the women's side, America's Chase Ealey is also putting her stamp on the sport. She won the world title in Budapest on a throw of 20.43, but has not surpassed 20m since. Teammate Maggie Ewen usually finishes behind Ealey, but she won the U.S. championship in Eugene in early August, and reached 20.45m in Los Angeles before that for her season best that leads the field at the Classic.

Discus: America's Valarie Allman turned dancing into one of the best discus throws in the world. She's a five-time national champion, including the 2023 meet in Eugene, and she's won an Olympic gold, but she was shocked in Budapest and had to settle for the silver back in August. She has a season best of 70.47m, and American Laulauga Tausaga, who finished behind Allman in Eugene but beat her in Budapest, is the only other thrower in the Classic field with a season best over 69m.

Kenya's Beatrice Chebet will be vying for a medal in two events. She finished second in the 3,000m steeplechase in Budapest, and is also a premiere runner in the 5K event scheduled for Saturday.

Preview: World's best ready for season finale at Prefontaine

DENTON, Texas (AP) — Kansas guard Arterio Morris entered a plea deal to end a misdemeanor assault case against him in Texas, canceling a trial scheduled for October, his attorney said Thursday.

Morris was originally charged with a Class A misdemeanor on allegations he assaulted an ex-girlfriend in the Dallas area in June 2022, shortly before he enrolled at the University of Texas. Morris transferred to Kansas after the 2022-2023 season.

The initial charge could have carried up to a year in jail. After several trial delays, Morris entered a nolo contendere plea, also known as a no contest plea, to a Class C assault misdemeanor and must pay a $362 fine, Morris' attorney, Justin Moore, said. The plea allows a defendant to accept consequences of the charge without admitting guilt.

Missouri QB Brady
Cook against the Kansas State defense, which made life miserable for
him last season. Cook was just 15 of 27 for 128 yards with no
touchdowns and two interceptions in the 40-12 loss. Cook's biggest
impact on the game came no the ground, where he ran for 53 yards.

Kansas State:
WR Phillip Brooks has become the do-everything offensive threat the
Wildcats lost when RB Deuce Vaughn was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys.
He had seven catches for 94 yards and a touchdown while also scoring
on the ground in last week's win over Troy.

Missouri:
Cody Schrader and Daniel Peat combined to run 19 times for 29 yards
against Kansas State last season. The Wildcats currently lead the
nation by allowing just 38 yards per game on the ground.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma coach Brent Venables and Tulsa coach
Kevin Wilson will renew acquaintances when their teams meet on
Saturday. Venables was a defensive assistant at Oklahoma from 1999 to
2011. Wilson was an offensive assistant for the Sooners from 2002 to
2010. Venables went on to lead Clemson defenses for a decade, helping
the Tigers win two national titles before returning to Oklahoma as
head coach. Wilson was Ohio State's offensive coordinator from 2017

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts ran for a pair of 1-yard touchdowns
and threw a 63-yard TD pass to DeVonta Smith, D’Andre Swift ran for
175 yards and a score, and the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles held
off the turnover-prone Minnesota Vikings 34-28. Hurts shook off a
sluggish passing performance in the first half when he connected with
Smith for the scoring strike in the third quarter that made it 27-7.
It almost wasn’t enough as Kirk Cousins tried to rally the Vikings

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers
says on Instagram he had surgery to repair his torn left Achilles
tendon on Wednesday. Rodgers' post Thursday night includes a picture
of him smiling in a blue medical cap and gown in a hospital bed with
his left foot clearly bruised. Rodgers said the surgery was performed
by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, an orthopedic surgeon based in Los Angeles
who has worked with numerous professional athletes during his career.
Rodgers is out for the season after tearing his Achilles tendon on
the fourth snap of his debut with his new team Monday night, a 22-16
overtime victory over Buffalo.

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have fired Chief Baseball Officer
Chaim Bloom as the team stumbled toward a third last-place finish in
four seasons. The team made the announcement before the start of a
doubleheader against the New York Yankees, who took the first two
games of the series to drop Boston into a tie for last. Bloom was
hired from the Tampa Bay Rays to help revive the farm system and
bring financial stability to a team that was one of baseball’s
biggest spenders. One of his first actions was to trade 2018 AL MVP

hoped to clean up his game in a final tune-up, but wasn’t nearly as

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have fired Chief Baseball Officer
Chaim Bloom as the team stumbled toward a third last-place finish in
four seasons. The team made the announcement before the start of a
doubleheader against the New York Yankees, who took the first two
games of the series to drop Boston into a tie for last. Bloom was
hired from the Tampa Bay Rays to help revive the farm system and
bring financial stability to a team that was one of baseball’s

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Doug Pederson has known Andy Reid for nearly 30 years.

He played for Reid in Green Bay (1996-98) and then Philadelphia (1999). He spent seven years coaching under Reid in Philadelphia (2009-12) and then Kansas City (2013-15).

They share offensive philosophies, coaching principles and core beliefs.

They’ll share the field for the third time in 10 months when Pederson and the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0) host Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs (0-1) on Sunday. And Pederson is still looking for a breakthrough victory against his mentor and close friend.

“I got a ton of respect for Coach Reid and his career and what he’s done,” Pederson said Wednesday. “I’ve played for him. I worked for him and obviously you’d love to eventually win a football game against him.”

Pederson is 0-3 in head-to-head matchups against Reid, with all three of those played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

The Chiefs beat Pederson and Philadelphia 27-20 in Week 2 of the 2017 season; the Eagles rebounded and ultimately won the Super Bowl. The Chiefs swept the Jaguars last season, winning 27-17 in Week 10 and 27-20 in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs.

Pederson still laments the most recent one. His defense gave up a 98-yard drive with Patrick Mahomes (sprained ankle) sidelined in the second quarter. His offense had two chances to tie the game in the third and couldn’t move the ball past midfield, and then turned the ball over twice in the fourth.

“There were some missed opportunities by us,” Pederson recalled. “Those were critical and those were big and all of that. But I felt like, too, we just missed the opportunities that were there. Whether that’s the outcome of the game or not, who knows?

“Maybe fortunately for us it’s a learning experience and something that our young football team can take away from moments like that. When you’re playing good teams like this and defending world championship teams, you can’t make those mistakes and expect to win.”

Reid has noticed similarities between Kansas City and Jacksonville, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

It's no surprise, either, given how much Pederson studied and learned while playing and coaching under Reid.

“Everywhere you go, you take a piece of it and put it in there,” Reid said. “I think he's probably put his own flair on things. I'm sure there are things he does that he took from here, but we were together a long time.”

The Chiefs are 3½-point favorites, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Jacksonville went 5-0 as home underdogs last season, the best single-season mark by any team in the Super Bowl era.

“It’ll be a good test for early in the season to see where we’re at,” Jaguars receiver Christian Kirk said. “It’s big for us, Week 2, to really get a taste of the caliber of football and the level of football that we want to play. We’re going to have to beat teams like this to get to where we want to go.

“It’s really important for us to approach it that way and see how we respond.”

Pederson won’t mention either Kansas City loss this week. He doesn’t need to. But he’ll surely think about those along with the possibility of getting a first win against his mentor.

KVA Announces 2023 Week 2 Volleyball Rankings

Reigning Big 12 champion Kansas State wraps up non-conference play with a chance to give the league another win in an SEC stadium. So does Big 12 newcomer BYU. K-State plays Saturday at former Big Eight and Big 12 rival Missouri, now in its 12th SEC season. The Cougars go to Arkansas. Texas won last weekend at then-No. 3 Alabama. TCU is at league newcomer Houston for the first Big 12 conference game this season, and only one this week. The Big 12 has eight undefeated teams. But it's the only Power Five league with two winless teams. Texas Tech and Baylor, both 0-2, host FCS teams.

Things to watch for in the Big 12 Conference in Week 3:

No. 15 Kansas State at Missouri. The reigning Big 12 champion Wildcats (2-0) wrap up non-conference play Saturday at former Big Eight and Big 12 rival Missouri (2-0). K-State won 40-12 last year at home in the first meeting since 2011, the final season before Mizzou went from the Big 12 to the SEC.

The Wildcats have scored at least 40 points in each of their last four regular-season games, their longest streak since 2002. And they’ve only allowed 20.4 points a game since switching to a 3-3-5 defensive alignment at the start of the 2021 season.

This is one of two more opportunities the Big 12 has this week to win again in an Southeastern Conference stadium. Texas, in its final season before going to the SEC, beat then-No. 3 Alabama last week. Big 12 newcomer BYU makes its first trip to Arkansas, which won 52-35 in Provo last October.

TCU goes to league newcomer Houston in the Big 12's first conference game this season, and only one this weekend. Both are 1-1. TCU coach Sonny Dykes and Houston’s Dana Holgorsen were assistants together for the late coach Mike Leach at Texas Tech from 2000-06. They both coached receivers throughout that time, and were co-offensive coordinators the final two seasons.

Former Southwest Conference rivals Houston and TCU haven't played since the 2007 Texas Bowl, one of only five matchups between them since the final SWC season in 1995.

Linebacker Danny Stutsman goes into 19th-ranked Oklahoma's game at Tulsa as the Big 12's leading tackler again. He had 17 tackles (one short of his career high), 2 1/2 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery in the Sooners' 28-11 win over SMU. The 6-foot-4, 241-pound junior led the conference last season with 125 total tackles and ranked 18th nationally with 9.6 tackles per game.

The Big 12 has eight undefeated teams, but is also the only Power Five league with two winless teams. Texas Tech and Baylor, both 0-2, are home this week against FCS teams.

The Red Raiders are 0-2 for the first time since 1990 after losing 38-30 to 13th-ranked Oregon, and will try to avoid their first 0-3 start since 1971 against Tarleton State. The Texans are finishing a four-year transition from Division II to the FCS level.

Baylor hosts LIU from New York, a week 12th-ranked and future Big 12 team Utah scored two touchdowns in the final 1:59 to win 20-13 in Waco.

Texas moved from 11th to No. 4 in this week's AP poll for its highest ranking since finishing second in 2009, when the Longhorns lost to Alabama in the national championship game. A strike just missing inside post within the first twenty seconds of the nationally ranked KJCCC battle Wednesday night in Hutchinson was a sign of the times for the 8th ranked Barton Community College women's soccer team as an 84th minute goal dropped the Cougars from the unbeaten on the 1-0 loss at 11th ranked Hutchinson Community College.

The Cougars outshot Hutchinson 19-7 in the contest, 12-2 in shots between the posts but couldn't rattle the net against its fourth matchup against a ranked opponent.

Barton drops to 3-1-1 in conference and overall on the season while Hutchinson remains unbeaten at 4-0-2 in league and 7-0-2 overall.

Cougars fall 1-0 at 11th ranked Hutchinson

Kansas State made quick work of Missouri a year ago, when the old conference foes renewed their rivalry in Manhattan, Kansas.

Well, it would have been quick if not for the driving rainstorm and hour-long lightning delay.

All it did was make the dreary day even worse for Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz, whose team was soundly beaten by the Wildcats in their first matchup since Missouri bolted the Big 12 for the SEC. Brady Cook struggled through the air, the ground game couldn't get anything going and Kansas State ran roughshod offensively in a 40-12 rout that could have been worse.

“Just a weird day in general with the amount of delays we had and how hard it was raining,” recalled Kansas State coach Chris Klieman. “I know it was a very difficult day to throw the football. It was pouring. It was just a very strange day.”

The weather figures to be a whole lot better Saturday when the teams meet again in Columbia, Missouri.

Whether the outcome will be different remains to be seen.

Kansas State has carried its momentum from a Big 12 championship into this season, waylaying Southeast Missouri and Troy — a 12-win team a year ago — in two home games. Will Howard has been accurate through the air, DJ Gidden and Treshaun Ward have been a potent one-two punch on the ground, and the Kansas State defense has allowed one touchdown in eight quarters.

Asked what must change Saturday, Drinkwitz was succinct.

“We're going to have to do a better job than we did last year defending the run. We put our defense in a lot of bad situations in last year's game,” he said. “We have to limit the explosive plays in the run game. And then I think their quarterback is very good. He has a natural feel for where to place the ball. He's incredibly accurate.”

The Tigers, meanwhile, followed up an easy opening win over South Dakota with a 23-19 win over Middle Tennessee State, which wasn't secured until the Blue Raiders turned the ball over on downs with 3:44 left in the game.

“It's going to be fun. It's going to be a loud, packed environment,” Howard said. "It's kind of an us-against-the world mentality when you go in there. You have 70-plus players and some staff and you have a whole stadium rooting against you.

“We love that,” Howard said. “We love being on the road.”

Wildcats offensive tackle Christian Duffie practiced early in the week but Klieman was not sure whether he would play. Duffie had started 35 straight games before missing the first two because of an undisclosed injury that occurred over the summer.

Missouri linebacker Chad Bailey has also been working his way back from an undisclosed procedure that Drinkwitz said would take about three weeks of recovery. That puts Bailey a bit ahead of schedule if he suits up Saturday.

Drinkwitz relinquished offensive play-calling midway through last year, then he hired Kirby Moore to direct the offense. There have been some bumps early in the season but Drinkwitz remains confident in the Tigers' ability to move the ball.

“Kirby calls the plays,” he said. “Obviously when it comes between series, you're making suggestions. We all have open traffic and talk through what were seeing and what we have to improve and how do we attack them. Pretty standard, honestly.”

Keagan Johnson made his Kansas State debut against Troy, catching three passes for 25 yards. The Iowa transfer missed the opener to an injury, and Klieman said he expected Johnson to be closer to full-go against the Tigers.

It was pouring. It was just a very strange day.”The weather figures to be a whole lot better Saturday when the teams meet again in Columbia, Missouri.Whether the outcome will be different remains to be seen.Kansas State has carried its momentum from a Big 12 championship into this season, waylaying Southeast Missouri and Troy — a 12-win team a year ago — in two home games. It was a short night Wednesday at the Barton Gym as the Barton Community College volleyball team took care of Cloud County Community College in straight sets 25-22, 25-23, and 25-15.

Improving to 13-3 on the season, Barton moves to 3-1 in drawing within a half game of the early conference lead while Cloud County's fourth straight loss drops the Thunderbirds to 1-4 in KJCCC play and 9-5 on the year.

Playing a pair of home matches this week, Barton will now embark on a two-match road swing beginning Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. first serve at Pratt Community College. The Cougars will then head to El Dorado next Wednesday in taking on Butler Community College before its next home match slated for Saturday, September 23, against Colby Community College.

The Cougars were solid most of the night, putting together a .291 efficiency on 110 attacks with just 13 errors and five service miscues.

Coming off a career high fifteen kills two nights prior, Mya Thompson matched her three-set collegiate best by leading the second wave of attackers with 11 kills on a .364 efficiency. Phoebe Reyes led the first wave with 11 kills as well, totaling 38 in a three-match stretch to average 3.45 kills per set.

Keying the offense to a .291 night, Maurin Reyes and Elena Stankovich put up 19 and 18 assists respectively.

Cougar Volleyball earns sweep of Cloud County

CHICAGO (AP) — Michael Massey homered for the second straight game, Salvador Perez had three hits and two RBIs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 7-1 on Wednesday night.

Four pitchers combined to limit Chicago to one run on five hits while striking out nine. Kansas City won its second straight against Chicago and took the season series 7-6.

Rookie Steven Cruz opened with two scoreless, two-hit innings in his first career start. Fellow rookie Alec Marsh (1-8) followed, allowing one run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings for his first major league victory.

“That was probably the best we've seen with him as far as his execution of pitches, the quality the shape of the pitched, the competitiveness,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said.

James McArthur got five outs, and Tucker Davidson tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to preserve the win for Marsh, who pitched in his 14th game. The 25-year-old righty started eight of them since being recalled from Omaha and making his debut June 30.

“To see the things I've been working on, to see it come together was amazing” said Marsh, who added teammates “didn't let up on him” in a postgame celebration.

Massey has six homers and 17 RBIs in 19 career games against the White Sox, a team he rooted for while growing up in the Chicago suburb of Palos Park, Illinois. The 25-year-old infielder has 13 homers this year, his second in the majors, and 17 total so far in his career.

As usual, Massey had group of family and friends cheering him on during the series on the South Side.

“I've gone back and forth, like, `If I'm doing it against these guys, what have I got to change against other teams?'" Massey said. “Again, I think it always comes down to just my family's here and being comfortable with them the whole week.”

Chicago starter Mike Clevinger (7-8) allowed two runs — on Massey’s drive in the second — and six hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out seven and didn't give up a walk.

“Six innings, two runs, made one mistake,” Chicago manager Pedro Grifol said. “Paid for it with Massey, but overall this is another good start for him.”

Nick Loftin drove in two runs, with a single and double, after entering as a pinch-hitter in the seventh.

Loftin, Perez and Bobby Witt, Jr. had RBIs in the seventh for the Royals, whose 46—101 record is the worst in the majors. The White Sox have the fourth-worst mark at 56-90. Both teams have been eliminated from the postseason.

Massey hit Clevinger’s 1-0 fastball into the right-field bullpen in the second to put Kansas City ahead 2-0.

Loftin and Perez each had an RBI single in the seventh as Kansas City scored three-runs off relievers Aaron Bummer and Lane Ramsey to take a 5-0 lead. Witt drove in a run with a sac fly.

Through the first six innings, Chicago advanced only two runners as far as second base.

The White Sox broke through in the seventh. Yoán Moncada led off with a double, then advanced to third on Andrew Vaughn's infield hit and scored when Witt threw wildly on Yasmani Grandal's grounder to shortstop.

Loftin and Perez drove in runs in the ninth.

The Milwaukee native struck out Gavin Sheets to cap a 13-pitch at bat for the first out of the seventh before McArthur took over and got Elvis Andrus to ground into a double-play.

“I think it was the longest at-bat of my career," Marsh said. “It was a battle the whole time.”

have been in first place since July 19, in part because their longest
losing streak since that time has been two. But Baltimore has scored
only two runs in its last two games, not the kind of momentum it was
looking for heading into its most pivotal series of the year.

scoreboard in the fourth inning.

The NBA has taken steps to try to ensure that its star players appear
in more games, particularly nationally televised matchups and the
in-season tournament that is being added this year. The league’s
board of governors has approved a new player participation policy
that will take effect for this upcoming season, replacing the player
resting policy that was implemented prior to the 2017-18 season. The
new rules focus primarily on star players — someone who has been an
All-Star or on the All-NBA team in any of the prior three seasons.
Teams will have to manage their rosters to ensure that multiple
