KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs managed to win the Super Bowl last season thanks primarily to their high-octane offense, which so often outscored opponents when a young but fast-improving defense had trouble slowing them down.

Now it's the defense that is bailing out the offense.

While the Chiefs continue to go through what Patrick Mahomes called “growing pains” after Thursday night's 19-8 win over the Broncos, their defense has quietly become one of the best in the NFL. They held Denver quarterback Russell Wilson to 95 yards passing, the Broncos to 197 yards as a team and did not allow any points until late in the fourth quarter.

Asked if his defense could possibly be playing any better, Chiefs coach Andy Reid replied: “Not tonight.”

“I thought they did a nice job. The guys played well,” he added. “We're doing OK.”

The Chiefs (5-1) already had a top-10 defense coming into the game, and that ranking could well improve after the job they did against the Broncos. They piled up four sacks, picked off Wilson twice and forced a clinching fumble in the final minutes.

Part of the success can be traced to the “growing pains” the defense went through a year ago.

Defensive end George Karlaftis is no longer a rookie but a game-wrecking pass rusher who was in on another sack against the Broncos. Second-year cornerback Trent McDuffie forced that late fumble, and fellow second-year defensive backs Jaylen Watson, Joshua Williams and Bryan Cook have joined veteran safety Justin Reid in forming a lockdown secondary.

Throw in some inspired play by Chris Jones, who also had another sack, and the Chiefs defense is downright nasty.

“We're going in the right direction,” said linebacker Nick Bolton, who returned from an ankle injury to snare one of the two interceptions. “Guys are getting more comfortable playing with each other and executing the game plan. Guys are in the right spot at the right time. Everyone is flying to the football. We keep that up every week and we can be special.”

They at least need to keep it up long enough for the Kansas City offense to hit its stride.

Mahomes threw for 306 yards and a touchdown against the Broncos, but he also was picked off once and was fortunate to have another wiped out by a penalty. And while there were times that the Kansas City offense moved up and down the field as it has in years past, it kept sputtering whenever it got anywhere close to the goal line.

“You ask the guys in the locker room right now, they're going to say we didn't play our best, we could do a lot of things better," Mahomes admitted. "Luckily our defense is playing so well we can still win football games.”

Still win a lot of them. Enough that the Chiefs are the first team in the AFC to reach five wins this season.

“We strive for something better than what we're doing right now,” Reid said. “But you know, we'll take the wins. They're tough to get in this league, and that's what I told the guys. We'll get back and work on a few things and get better.”

Many teams are trying to slow down Kansas City's offense by playing zone defenses, but the tradeoff is watching Travis Kelce nickel-and-dime his way down the field. The tight end's uncanny ability to find soft spots in the coverage was on display again Thursday night, when he caught nine passes for 124 yards — with Taylor Swift watching, of course.

The Chiefs continue to struggle in short-yardage situations, just as they did last season. Mahomes threw an incompletion on third-and-3 before the first of Harrison Butker's four field goals; they had a “tush-push” out of a fake field-goal formation stuffed on fourth-and-2; and a third-and-1 run by Kadarius Toney was stuffed for a loss and led to a punt.

Butker struggled much of last season after an injury in Week 1, but the big-legged kicker is now perfect through six games. He is 14-for-14 on field-goal tries, including a 60-yarder and the clinching 52-yarder Thursday night, and 15-for-15 on extra points.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling, whose contract pays him more than the rest of the Chiefs' wide receivers combined, was without a catch Thursday night; he only has seven for 116 yards this season. In fact, his most notable play against the Broncos was a flag for an illegal blindside block.

Wide receiver Justin Watson hurt his elbow laying out for a catch in the second half, though Reid said afterward that nothing was broken. McDuffie's ankle swelled up but he was able to finish the game.

12 — Mahomes is 12-0 in his career against the Broncos, the longest win streak by a starting quarterback against a single team to start a career since at least 1950. The Chiefs have beaten the Broncos the past 16 times they have played.

The Chiefs get a few extra days off before facing the Chargers on Oct. 22.

The 7th ranked Barton Community College women's soccer team snagged perhaps one of its biggest wins of the season Sunday afternoon at the Cougar Soccer Complex defeating 10th ranked Hutchinson Community College 3-2.

Notching their 10th victory of the season and avenging its' earlier season 1-0 loss in Hutchinson, the Cougars maintain their lead in the conference standings at 10-1-2 and on the season while the loss drops the second place Blue Dragons to 9-2-3 in league play and 12-2-3 overall.

Barton will make their final road trip of the regular season on Wednesday, traveling to Arkansas City for another key Jayhawk Conference battle against 17th ranked Cowley College in a 5:00 p.m. kickoff. The Cougars then return home for a pair closing out the regular season beginning next Saturday against Garden City Community College and Monday, October 23rd hosting Seward County Community College.

Barton opened the scoring in the 18th minute as Ivanna Faria's fourth setup of the season came on a near-side cross to find the head of leading goal scorer Nina Norshie on the backside for her 14th goal of the season.

Moving into sole possession for third most points in a career following her opening goal, Norshie climbed into a tie for second most just 23 minutes later as the sophomore carried Beatriz Baldi's setup through ball, converting the 1-v-1 battle with Blue Dragon keeper Karsyn Slothower for a 2-0 advantage.

Set pieces would hinder the Cougars on the afternoon as Hutchinson sliced the lead in half just 1:13 later on Kaitlyn Edwards first of two goals headed in on Emma Hoffman's delivered in kick.

Despite battling the 15-20 mph north wind in the opening stanza, the Cougars would outshoot the Blue Dragons 5-2 in the opening period while adding to the advantage in the final frame holding a 5-3 edge in the second half.

Rin Sato provided Barton a 3-1 lead in the 55th minute, placing a perfectly struck 40-yard free kick just beneath the crossbar over Slothower for the sophomore's second net shaker of the season and first collegiate game winning goal.

Hutchinson countered back just ninety seconds later as Adriana Delgado's sent corner found Edwards' head for the second time on the backside trimming the margin to 3-2 with 56:28 remaining.

Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson had a night to remember in his first Big 12 game.

The true freshman rushed for five touchdowns against Texas Tech on Saturday, the most in the Football Bowl Subdivision since Israel Abanikanda of Pittsburgh had six against Virginia Tech on Oct. 8, 2022.

Johnson, who ran 12 times for 91 yards, tied the school record for TDs rushing set by Jonathan Beasley in 2000 and tied by Collin Klein in 2011.

Johnson entered the game late in the first quarter and ran for TDs of 2, 5, 30, 11 and 3 yards in a 38-21 win in Lubbock, Texas. Johnson shared snaps with the starter, Will Howard, in the first half and took all the snaps in the second half.

Notre Dame safety Xavier Watts filled up the statistics sheet against Southern California like few defensive players.

He became the second player since at least 2000, according to Sportradar, to have two interceptions, a fumble return for a touchdown and a forced fumble. He also had seven tackles and a pass breakup in the 48-20 win.

The last player with two picks, fumble return TD and forced fumble was Kent State’s Demetrius Monday, who did it in a 10-7 loss to Minnesota on Sept. 19, 2015.

Houston has had a 100-yard kick return three straight years after Matthew Golden went the distance in the first quarter of the 41-39 win over West Virginia. Golden is the only player in the country with two kick returns for a TD this season. He had a 98-yarder against TCU on Sept. 16.

There have been four 100-yard kick returns in the FBS this season.

Stanford's Elic Ayomanor had 294 yards on 13 catches — all in the second half and overtime — in the Cardinal's 46-43 double-overtime win over Colorado.

The yards receiving total was the highest in the FBS since Jaxon Smith-Njigba of Ohio State had 347 on 15 catches against Utah in the 2022 Rose Bowl.

Antwaun Powell-Ryland Jr. of Virginia Tech matched the national season high for sacks with four against Wake Forest. He has seven for the season, tied for fifth nationally.

Kyle Kennard of Georgia Tech had the first four-sack game of the season, also against Wake Forest, on Sept. 23.

Garrett Cora of Division III Franklin (Indiana) set the NCAA all-division single-game season high for rushing yards with 318 and four touchdowns in a 35-21 win over Defiance (Ohio).

Cora has gone over 100 yards in four of his team's six games, including a 265-yard performance against Bluffton (Ohio) on Sept. 30, and he's second in Division III with 157.8 per game.

Boise State's Ashton Jeanty had the top FBS rushing performance of the week with 212 yards on 31 carries in a 31-30 loss to Colorado State. It was the 13th 200-yard game in the FBS this season, and second by Jeanty.

Barton's winning play was set up by defenseman Kimito Fritz, thwarting a 2v1 situation against the Rattlers attack by stealing a pass then immediately sending a 65-yard ball deep downfield to Voinier. Settling the pass then juking the Otero defenseman, Voinier sent a rocket game winner near post to the upper-90 as the clock stopped with just two seconds remaining.

The Cougars' bounce-back from Tuesday's disappointing loss improves to 11-1-3 on the year while Otero takes its first loss of the season to also stand at 11-1-3 on the season.

Barton now prepares for another big nationally ranked matchup on Wednesday, traveling to 8th ranked Cowley College with conference title implications in play for the 7:00 p.m. kick-off.

5th ranked Barton wins 3-2 at 13th ranked Otero

Jordan Montgomery shut down the Houston Astros and Leody Taveras
homered as the Texas Rangers did just enough against Justin Verlander
to get a 2-0 win in the opener of the AL Championship Series Sunday
night. Montgomery threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings and Taveras made it
2-0 with his solo homer in the fifth inning. Rookie Evan Carter
helped in the win, too. The 21-year-old doubled and scored in the
second and made two nifty defensive plays. The Rangers, who are in
the ALCS for the first time since back-to-back appearances in
2010-11, improved to 6-0 this postseason after sweeping the Rays in
the Wild Card Series and the Orioles in the ALDS.

capped a week for Larson in which he began his preparations for next
year’s Indianapolis 500. Larson plans to run both the Indy 500 and

— A total of 55,646 fans turned out in Iowa City for the “Crossover
at Kinnick” women's basketball exhibition between DePaul and Iowa.
Returning national player of the year Caitlin Clark had a
triple-double of 34 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Iowa coach
Lisa Bluder came up with the idea to play an outdoor game in the
football stadium with the hope of setting an all-time women's
basketball attendance record. The crowd nearly the doubled the
previous record of 29,619 set by Connecticut and Oklahoma in the 2002
NCAA championship game at San Antonio’s Alamodome.

Cricket is an Olympic sport again. Flag football gets in for the
first time. Five sports have been finally added to the 2028 Los
Angeles Games by the International Olympic Committee.
Baseball-softball, lacrosse and squash have also been included on the
program. All five cleared a final hurdle Monday from the Olympic
body’s full membership. The slate of sports was proposed by Los
Angeles officials one week ago and recommended by the IOC executive
board on Friday. Cricket has been elevated to Olympic status for the
first time since 1900 in one of the hotpots of the sport, Mumbai,
where the IOC is holding annual meetings while India hosts the
sport’s World Cup.

Athletic Conference volleyball champions. The Panthers swept to their
first WAC title in 20-years, and just the 6th title ever,
by crusing through their four opponents without losing a set Saturday
in Dodge City.

will look to turn an outstanding regular season into a state
tournament berth when they host a 5A Sub-State Saturday (10/21) at
Great Bend High School.

Lady Panthers claim WAC Tourney title

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State improved to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the MIAA with a 31-17 win over Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday (Oct. 14) at Lewis Field Stadium. The Tigers scored the first 17 points of the game and never trailed, sending the Lopers to 2-5 both overall and in the MIAA. The Tigers did a lot of damage on the ground, rushing for 235 yards as a team, while holding the Lopers to just 165 yards of total offense.

Churning out a career-high 162 rushing yards on 21 carries was Shane Watts, averaging 7.7 yards per carry in the game. He also caught a pair of passes for 19 yards to finish with 181 all-purpose yards in the game. Travis Dixon also produced a season high in rushing yards with 57 on seven carries. The pair combined for 219 yards of the 235 by the team.

Field position was key in the opening quarter as Nebraska-Kearney opened the game into a brisk north breeze. The Tiger defense forced a 3-and-out and a short punt gave the Tigers the ball at the UNK 33. Carson Arndt converted a field goal on FHSU's first drive of the game from 22 yards out. The Tiger defense produced another 3-and-out and set up a 56-yard field for the Tiger offense. Nine plays later, Jack Dawson found Jayden Horace for a 2-yard touchdown pass to make it 10-0 Tigers, which was the score at the end of the opening quarter.

The Tigers scored on the first play from scrimmage in the second quarter, a 16-yard shovel pass from Dawson to Cale Cormaney, putting the Tigers up 17-0. But they went scoreless the remainder of the quarter before halftime and the Lopers managed to pick up 10 points on a 26-yard field goal and a 5-yard touchdown pass from T.J. Davis to Reggie Anderson. The Tigers led by seven at the break.

The Tigers took control of the game going into the wind in the third quarter. Shane Watts broke off a 28-yard run for his only touchdown of the game and then later in the quarter Dawson found Horace again for a 26-yard touchdown pass. The Tigers led 31-10 going into the final quarter.

The Tigers played the clock management game in the fourth quarter and the Lopers were able to score only once on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Bailey Torres with 7:37 to go.

Dawson finished with 21 completions on 32 attempts for 177 passing yards. Cormaney had a team-high seven catches for 60 yards.

The Tiger defense contained dual threat quarterback T.J. Davis to just 91 passing yards and 13 rushing yards. The defensive line wreaked havoc all day as Myles Menges finished with 2.5 sacks and six tackles. Parrish Terry added a team-best eight tackles with a sack. Makel Williams came up with an interception right at the end of the third quarter to keep the Tigers well in control going into the fourth quarter.

For UNK, Zane Schawang led in rushing with 45 yards and AJ McPhee led in receiving yards with 63. Tre O'Guinn led the Lopers in tackles with eight.

Tigers Rumble to 31-17 Win Over Lopers

The 19th ranked Barton Community College volleyball team held off an upset bid Saturday evening in Concordia with a fifth set thriller over Cloud County Community College (25-12, 25-16, 16-25, 23-25, 20-18).

Barton's 10th straight victory improves the first place Cougars to 11-1 and 21-3 on the season while dropping Cloud County to 5-7 in the KJCCC and 19-11 on the year.

Barton Volleyball wins in five sets at Cloud County for 10th straight victory

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Freshman quarterback Avery Johnson played the entire second half while starter Will Howard watched because Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said Texas Tech was giving the Wildcats the QB run game.

Still, there will be questions about what's next under center for the defending Big 12 champions.

Johnson ran for five touchdowns, a first in FBS this season, while sharing time with Howard before taking over after the break, and Kansas State beat the Red Raiders 38-21 on Saturday night.

“That’s why we stayed with Avery because if they’re going to play a deep safety and give you quarterback run, then we’re going to make people pay for it,” Klieman said. “Had we had to get into a game where we’re throwing the heck out of it, who knows what we would have done?”

Johnson finished with 91 yards rushing as the Wildcats (4-2, 2-1 Big 12) bounced back from a surprising loss at Oklahoma State with an eighth consecutive victory in the series.

Jake Strong led a 99-yard drive to the only lead for Texas Tech (3-4, 2-2) in his debut in the third quarter after replacing injured starter Behren Morton. But the freshman threw three interceptions after the Wildcats had gone back in front.

Morton, who was starting because of the third long-term injury in as many seasons to Tyler Shough, was slow to get up several times in the first half and was ruled out after the break.

Coach Joey McGuire said Morton had already been dealing with a shoulder injury before the Red Raiders had a two-game conference winning streak stopped after a disappointing 1-3 start to his second season.

“I’m frustrated right now because I think you’ve always got to find a way to win no matter who’s out there,” McGuire said. “This is going to go back to, ‘Yeah, hey, you lose your starting quarterback.’ But at the end of the day, we didn’t play good enough football to win the game.”

Strong's second series started at the Texas Tech 1-yard line, but his 13-yard pass got the drive going.

Strong ran 54 yards to set up an 8-yard scoring pass on third down, when he lofted a pass just as he was hit hard in the pocket and Jerand Bradley got a foot down as he fell out the back of the end zone to give the Red Raiders a 21-17 lead.

Johnson, whose only other touchdown came in a blowout of Southeast Missouri State in the opener, replaced Howard on the third series and scored on a 2-yard run for a 10-0 lead.

Howard, a senior closing in on 30 career games but coming off a three-interception showing against the Cowboys, returned several times in the first half.

His 30-yard run put Kansas State back in front for good at 24-21, and Johnson's 11-yard score put the Wildcats up 10 the first play after VJ Payne's 17-yard return of Strong's first interception.

After Kobe Savage corralled Strong's third interception in the end zone, Johnson led an 80-yard drive to the game-sealing score, a 3-yard run for his fifth TD.

The Wildcats finished with 436 yards a week after generating a season-low 372 in a 29-21 loss to Oklahoma State.

“We just needed to stay the course, block out the outside noise and listen to the inside noise of coaches, support staff, your teammates that do believe in you all the time,” Klieman said.

Kansas State: The Wildcats appeared to have a chance for a three-score lead just before halftime when linebacker Jake Clifton forced a fumble on a catch by Cam’Ron Valdez and Kansas State recovered inside the Texas Tech 25. But Clifton made helmet-to-helmet contact with Valdez and was ejected for targeting. Texas Tech then drove for a touchdown and a 17-14 halftime deficit.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders just can't seem to escape injuries at quarterback. Shough had played the deepest into the season of the Oregon transfer's three years in Lubbock before breaking a leg. Now the question is how soon Morton might return, if at all. This could be a serious test of the QB depth chart.

Treshaun Ward had 118 yards rushing as the Wildcats finished with 273 yards on the ground, the most allowed by Texas Tech this season. Tahj Brooks ran for 98 yards and a touchdown for Texas Tech, and Morton scored on a 1-yard plunge.

Kansas State: TCU at home next Saturday in a rematch of last year's Big 12 championship game, when the Wildcats handed the Horned Frogs their first loss of the season.

Texas Tech: at BYU next Saturday in the second meeting between the schools. The other was in 1940.

The Horned Frogs jumped ahead 14-0 in the game's first five minutes. Millard Bradford had a 35-yard interception return for a TD and Hoover's first drive ended with a 42-yard TD to JP Richardson. Hoover completed 37 of 58 passes. BYU was held to a season-low 243 total yards. Kedon Slovis was 15-of-34 passing for 152 yards with that interception and a lost fumble. Hoover started in place of the injured Chandler Morris.

The Cyclones entered the day with 10 interceptions, third-most in the FBS. Emory Jones. tossed his sixth interception in the last four games to cornerback T.J. Tampa, giving the Cyclones the ball at the Cincinnati 34-yard line. The turnover set up a 30-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead with 2:12 to play in the first quarter. Jones responded by throwing a 20-yard score to tight end Chamon Metayer. It was the third touchdown for Metayer in the last two games and the first for Jones and the Bearcats offense in their last 17 drives at home.

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston dominated Texas during the regular season, winning nine of 13 matchups. Now the Rangers get another chance at the Astros when they meet for the first time in the playoffs in a Texas-sized showdown in AL Championship Series with a trip to the World Series on the line starting Sunday night in Houston. The Astros completed the regular season matchup against the Rangers with a three-game walloping at the beginning of September. Houston clubbed 16 homers to sweep that series by a combined score of 39-10. But despite the lopsided results this season, both teams say they’ll start with a clean slate for this series.

Sunday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

No doubt about it, Great Bend's Kaylin Wahlmeier had a tough road ahead of her at the Class 5A State Tennis Championships in Salina Friday. All players had to contend with the cold and wind, but with a win in her first match, Wahlmeier would draw the favorite for the title in round two.

Wahlmeier entered the field as the No. 17 seed, playing a competitive match but losing 6-4, 6-3 to the No. 16 seed from Aquinas. Things got no easier on the back side of the bracket with an 8-1 loss to the eventual 12th-place finisher from St. James Academy.

The Class 5A bracket had undefeated state champions. Bishop Carroll's Brynn Steven had at a 6-0 set in each of her four state matches to finish her season at 29-0. Andover's Anna Jittawait and Brooke Walker were almost as impressive but needed three sets to get by teammates Emma Jittawait and Elizabeth Gaddis in the semifinals. With those teams in the mix, Andover scored 49 points to cruise to the team championship. Salina Central and Bishop Carroll each scored 23 points for second and third, respectively.

Class 3-2-1A The Ellsworth girls just missed team hardware by two points at the Class 3-2-1A State Tennis Championships in Topeka. Wichita Collegiate scored 50 points for the win, followed by Marysville with 28 points, and Conway Springs with 25 points. Ellsworth finished with 23 points in fourth.

As regional runners-up, Reygan Coonrod and Inarie Rippert had a bye in round one. They easily defeated Marysville's No. 14 seed 6-2, 6-1, then advanced to the state semifinals with a 7-5, 6-3 win against the No. 6 seed from Osborne. The girls took down No. 2 seeded Hesston in an epic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, 8-6 battle to reach the championship match. There they were defeated by Collegiate's No. 1 team 6-0, 6-4. Collegiate had at least one 6-0 set in each win of the tournament.

Elene Jundt and Hanna Vague won their first match against Osborne 6-2, 6-4, only to be rewarded with a 6-0, 6-0 match against the eventual champions from Collegiate. The girls won their next two matches on the backside before falling 8-6 to the eventual sixth-place finishers from Phillipsburg. The Bearcats downed Smoky Valley 8-0 in the 11th-place match.

The 3-2-1A singles bracket included several area players. Larned's Abigail Holt entered as a regional champion and drew the No. 7 seed. She was upset by Sterling's Chelsie Brown 7-6, 6-0 in round two. Brown lost her next match 6-4, 6-1 to the eventual runner-up from Colby. Brown finished seventh with an 8-3 win against Cimarron.

Holt won two matches on the back side before falling to Cimarron's eighth-place finisher 8-2. Holt defeated Phillipsburg 8-4 and Ellsworth's Karli Haase 8-5 to secure ninth place. Haase, playing as the No. 16 seed, opened with a 6-0, 6-4 win against Colby before falling 6-0, 6-0 to the eventual state champion from Collegiate. Lady Bearcat junior Felis De La Cruz lost her first two matches.

Central Plains' junior duo of Grace Lamatsch and Ryann Metro came up a win shy of a medal. The girls went three sets in both of their first two matches, including a loss to the eventual fifth-place finishers from Osborne. On the game's opening drive, Gordon caught a 50-yard pass from Bowman, then caught a short pass from Bowman and took it 17 yards to the end zone. On the next drive, Bowman found Presley for a 20-yard score to make it 14-0.

Oklahoma State tops No. 23 Kansas 39-32

Returning to duel action, freshman Torrey Lindsay led the Barton Community College men's bowling team Thursday afternoon securing the lone placing in its' dual match at Ottawa University.

Competing over three individual games, the Cougars "B" entry team posted a fourth-place finish (2,724) pins while the "A" squad finished with the fifth best score (2,603). While the duel served as a scrimmage for Ottawa, the hosts "A" squad led the six-team field with a best (3,091) pins destroyed to edge out the Braves "B" squad's (2,989).

Torrey Lindsay All-Tournament awardLindsay posted the fourth best three game total 640 in the 31-man field as the freshman overcame his lowest game score 177 in the opener, with the teams' highest round 269 in the middle game before concluding with a third game 194.

Kamron Stude followed Lindsay on the "B" squad finishing nine spots back in 13th achieving the teams second highest single game score 234 in the opener with scores of 186 and 155 in his final two games for a total 575.

Leading the "A" entered team was Carter Lambeth's trio scores of 172, 168, and 223 for a 15th top output 563, with teammate Chris O'Connor falling three spots back and five pins behind at 558.

Four top-10 performances carried the Barton Community College women's bowling team Thursday afternoon in its' dual at Ottawa University.

Rolling a trio of individual games, the Cougars "A" squad accumulated a 3rd place 2,616 total edging out the "B" entered Barton team's 2,155 output. As the event was served as a scrimmage for Ottawa, the home teams "B" five pack led the four-team field with a top score (2,910) pins to outduel the Braves "A" team's (2,705).

Allyson Heidenreich's 6th place finish of 585, highlighted a string of four straight Cougars' finishing inside the top-10. The sophomore directed 11 Cougars with back-to-back 200 round scores of 221, 220 before concluding with a third game total 144 in the 24-entry field.

Olivia Oliver shared honors with Heidenreich with the second-best single game score of 200. Oliver highlighted the "B" squad with a 7th best score 550 while Angelina Leeper's 532 pins, and Chailyn Scott's 515 total followed respectfully for 8th and 9th place performances.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Everything is certainly bigger deep in the heart of Texas this baseball postseason, with a Lone Star State showdown for a spot in the World Series.

Defending world champion Houston is no stranger to playing long into October, now getting ready for its seventh consecutive American League Championship Series. This time, the Astros play the up-and-coming Texas Rangers, who led them in the AL West standings for most of the season but again didn't fare well in the head-to-head matchups.

Both benches and bullpens cleared the last time the two teams played in Houston, where the ALCS opener will be played Sunday night.

“There's a lot of intensity. ... I'd say we're rivals,” first-year Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday. “That's the way baseball should be, I guess. They're your opponent, so I don't think it should be a lovefest out there.”

Especially with so much at stake when the instate rivals meet in the playoffs for the first time.

This will be only the 10th postseason series featuring teams from the same state in baseball’s divisional era (since 1969). It will be the first outside of California since the New York Mets and New York Yankees played in the 2000 World Series, which was a year before the Astros and Rangers had even met in a regular-season game.

Hall of Fame strikeout king Nolan Ryan pitched for both teams, finishing his career with the Rangers and later was part of the ownership group for their only World Series and ALCS appearances in 2010 and 2011. Their respective 40,000-seat retractable-roof stadiums are about 250 miles apart — Minute Maid Park in Houston opened in 2000, and Globe Life Field is in its fourth season.

Houston's Dusty Baker and Bochy are the winningest active managers, both with more than 2,000 wins in 26 seasons managing in the big leagues. Bochy won three World Series titles with the San Francisco Giants and Baker finally got his first championship last season.

“Now me and Bruce Bochy need to battle,” the 74-year-old Baker said. ”I know Bruce and he knows me.”

They have gone head-to-head 214 times. Their only playoff meeting was the 2012 NLDS that Bochy's Giants won in five games over Baker's Cincinnati Reds.

Houston has dominated the AL West since the Rangers won the division in 2016, their last winning season before this year. The Astros have since been to the World Series four times, winning two of them, and the only time without a division title was the abbreviated 60-game regular season during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when as a wild-card team they lost a seven-game ALCS to Tampa Bay.

“They are the reigning champions, so you have to give them a respect for that,” Rangers catcher-designated hitter Mitch Garver said. “I’d say we have equally as good a chance to win as they did.”

Texas led the AL West for 148 of the first 149 days this season, and 159 overall. But when the Rangers lost at Seattle on the final day of the regular season, a day after clinching a playoff spot, and Houston won to match them at 90 wins, the Astros had another division title and a first-round playoff bye.

“A lot of people were wondering what it was gonna be like if the ’Stros didn’t win the division,” third baseman Alex Bregman said at the start of their champagne celebration after the regular-season finale. “I guess we’ll never know.”

The Rangers became a wild card and had to fly across the country — going over North Texas on the way — before sweeping the AL's winningest teams from the regular season, Tampa Bay and Baltimore.

Houston, which won its ALDS over Minnesota in four games, had the division tiebreaker because of its 9-4 record against the Rangers this year. The Astros had clinched the season series even before their obliterating three-game sweep with 16 homers and 39 runs in Arlington from Sept. 4-6. That is the only time they have played since the benches cleared July 26, after the Astros won the previous two nights to move within a game of the division lead.

Yordan Alvarez got hit by a pitch right after Bregman homered in the first inning of that series finale, and Texas second baseman Marcus Semien took a retaliatory plunk in the third. Semien hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the fourth, and exchanged words with catcher Martin Maldonado. An inning later, Semien scored on a grand slam by Adolis García, who was face-to-face with the catcher when the benches cleared, though no punches were thrown.

“It's a heated rivalry. I understand why there's some animosity,” Rangers first baseman Nathaniel Lowe said.

Bochy was drafted by Houston and began his nine seasons as a big league catcher with the Astros from 1978-80, when they were still in the National League. Their first World Series came as National League champions in 2005.
