WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Vladislav Goldin had 20 points and Brandon Weatherspoon scored 19 to lead No. 20 Florida Atlantic to a 95-82 overtime win against Wichita State on Sunday.

Florida Atlantic (19-5, 9-2 American Athletic Conference) dominated the overtime period, outscoring Wichita State 21-8. The Owls shot 47.2% for the game.

“We made two hustle plays to start and that set the tone in overtime,” Florida Atlantic coach Dusty May said. “Without a doubt the hustle plays helped give us the separation we needed.”

Xavier Bell finished with 25 points off the bench for Wichita State (10-14, 2-9). Colby Rogers had 21 for his fifth straight double-figure game. The Shockers shot 50.8% from the field.

“I thought early in the game we were thinking pass way too much. We have to think shot quality,” Wichita State coach Paul Mills said. “Just knowing the nature of the defense you have to get quality looks. I thought Rogers did that and obviously Bell did a great job of it.”

Bell hit a 3 with 42 seconds left in the second half to take a 73-72 lead. Late free throws for both teams sent the game to overtime tied at 74-74.

Florida Athletic went 0 for 6 from the floor to start the game, but managed to limit Wichita State to just nine points in that stretch. Weatherspoon was vital in getting the Owls some early momentum with eight points in the opening six minutes.

“I knew it was an early morning game and I am a big energy guy so I just tried to get the juices flowing,” Weatherspoon said. “We just needed to stay positive, just working on getting stops and everything will be alright.”

May said Weatherspoon “doesn’t get a lot of accolades,” but the team's success wouldn't be what it is without him.

“Obviously his stat line is easy to talk about today, but his impact goes so much beyond that,” May said.

Turnovers plagued Wichita State and Florida Atlantic capitalized on it with 16 points off 17 Shocker turnovers. It was the 11th time the Shockers have had 14 or more turnovers this season.

Florida Atlantic: The Owls had 44 points inside the paint and went just 7 for 23 from the 3-point line. Free throws were key — Florida Atlantic went 20 for 22 from the free-throw line.

Wichita State: The Shockers shot the ball extremely well, but turnovers were their downfall. Wichita State entered the game with just 13 turnovers in the last two games, but ranked 273rd in the country in assist to turnover ratio at 0.95.

Mahomes made sure of it, leading another super comeback on the NFL’s biggest stage in America’s showcase capital.

Mahomes threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman in overtime, and the Chiefs rallied to beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 on Sunday, becoming the NFL's ninth repeat Super Bowl champs.

With pop star Taylor Swift watching boyfriend Kelce from a suite, the Chiefs captured their third title in five years, a run that puts them among the league's greatest franchises.

“Well, you know the goal has always been to get three,” Kelce screamed on stage after sharing a kiss with Swift. “But we couldn’t get here without getting that two, and having that target on our back all year. ... How about that. We get a chance to do it three times in a row.”

The NFL’s first Super Bowl in Las Vegas was a sloppy, mistake-filled affair that was mostly boring until the back-and-forth fourth quarter and OT. It was the second of 58 Super Bowls to be tied after regulation, and the first played under new overtime rules that ensured both teams got the ball.

The Chiefs (15-6) trailed 22-19 after Jake Moody kicked a 27-yard field goal on the first possession of overtime, but Mahomes rallied the Chiefs, completing another impressive comeback in a rematch of the Super Bowl four years ago.

Mahomes ran 8 yards on fourth-and-1 to keep the Chiefs' chances alive and then scrambled 19 yards to set up the winning score, which came 14:57 into the extra period — just before what would have been the second OT.

“With all the adversity we’ve been through this season to come through tonight. ... I’m proud of the guys,” said Mahomes, who earned his third Super Bowl MVP award. “This is awesome. Legendary.”

After he connected with a wide-open Hardman, the Chiefs ran on the field as red-and-yellow confetti fell onto the turf.

Mahomes and Reid are now halfway to Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, who won six championships in 20 years together with the New England Patriots and were the most recent team to go back-to-back following the 2003-04 seasons.

The 28-year-old Mahomes becomes the fourth starting QB to win three Super Bowls — joining Brady, Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw and Troy Aikman — and second-youngest.

“I am going to celebrate tonight, celebrate at the parade and then work my way to get back in this game next year,” Mahomes said. “I am going to do whatever I can to be back in this game next year. Three-peat.”

The most excitement in the first half came when a frustrated Kelce bumped Reid on the sideline, knocking the Chiefs' 65-year-old coach a few steps back after teammate Isiah Pacheco fumbled inside the red zone during the second quarter.

“You guys saw that?” Kelce said. “I’m going to keep it between us unless my ‘mic’d up’ tells the world. I was just telling him how much I loved him.”

The action picked up after a crucial blunder by San Francisco’s special teams set up Mahomes’ 16-yard TD pass to Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a 13-10 lead.

Brock Purdy and the 49ers (14-6) answered but they couldn’t make enough plays, denying Mr. Irrelevant an opportunity to go from last pick in the 2022 NFL draft to Super Bowl champion.

“We have the offense to score touchdowns and I failed to put the team in position to do that," Purdy said.

Niners wide receiver Jauan Jennings threw a TD pass and caught one, joining Eagles quarterback Nick Foles six years ago as the only players to do both in the Super Bowl.

After Moody’s 53-yard field goal gave the Niners a 19-16 lead with 1:53 remaining, Mahomes and Kelce went to work. Mahomes connected with Kelce for a 22-yard gain to set up Harrison Butker’s tying kick, a 29-yarder with 3 seconds left.

A holding call on Kansas City’s Trent McDuffie extended San Francisco’s opening drive of overtime and Purdy made key throws to drive the 49ers to the Chiefs 9. But San Francisco settled for a field goal.

Purdy, Christian McCaffrey and the Niners jumped ahead 10-0, but that’s no big deal for Mahomes and the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. They’ve trailed by 10 points in all three of their victories, including last year’s 38-35 win over Philadelphia.

Mahomes wasn’t at his best early and threw an interception. But with the game on the line, he was a magician once again. He finished 34 of 46 for 333 yards and two TDs.

The Chiefs were hardly dominant during the regular season and entered the playoffs as the AFC's No. 3 seed. They won at Buffalo and at Baltimore in the postseason — the first road playoff games of Mahomes' career — and entered the Super Bowl as 2 1/2-point underdogs, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

“The Kansas City Chiefs are never underdogs. Just know that,” Mahomes said.

They became the first team to win consecutive Super Bowls as underdogs; the Philadelphia Eagles were slight favorites a year ago.

The game turned when San Francisco’s Ray-Ray McCloud couldn’t scoop a punt that hit teammate Darrell Luter Jr.’s leg and the Chiefs recovered at the 49ers 16, leading to Mahomes' go-ahead TD pass to Valdes-Scantling.

The Niners answered on the next possession with Purdy tossing a 10-yard TD pass to Jennings for a 16-13 lead. Moody’s extra point was blocked.

Niners coach Kyle Shanahan gambled on fourth-and-3 from the Chiefs 15, passing up a chance for a tying field goal. Purdy hit George Kittle for a 4-yard gain and then found Jennings for the score.

Shanahan resorted to trickery for the only touchdown of the first half.

Jennings, a wide receiver who had never thrown a pass in an NFL game, tossed a 21-yard TD to McCaffrey. He was hit as he threw a wobbly pass across the field, but McCaffrey snagged it and sprinted to the end zone.

Shanahan fell to 0-2 as a head coach in Super Bowls and 0-3 overall, including a loss when he was offensive coordinator for Atlanta. That was the game in which Brady and the Patriots rallied from a 28-3 deficit to win in OT.

“When you go against guys like Tom Brady and Pat Mahomes, you never feel comfortable with a lead. Those guys are two of the best to ever play the game,” Shanahan said.

There were plenty of stars in the building as the NFL brought its biggest game to this gambling mecca — once a taboo idea. Jay-Z, LeBron James and Paul McCartney were among the celebrities in the crowd.

Post Malone sang “America the Beautiful,” Reba McEntire performed the national anthem and Usher electrified the crowd at halftime. He brought out a number of guests, including Alicia Keys, H.E.R., Jermaine Dupri, Lil Jon and Ludacris.

Attendance was announced at 61,629 at the relatively compact Allegiant Stadium, the smallest crowd in Super Bowl history except for the pandemic game in Tampa, Florida, three years ago.

Barton Wrestling results from NJCAA South Central District

The Barton Community College baseball team opened the 2024 campaign taking two-of-three games on the road at Rose State College this weekend in Midwest City, OK.

Rallying in the middle innings Friday to win 14-7 for their seventh straight season opening victory, the Cougars rewrote the script in game one of Saturday's doubleheader 4-1 before falling 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth in the nightcap.

Now 2-1 on the year, Barton will set its' sights on next weekend's home opening four-game series against Western Nebraska Community College. First pitch of Saturday and Sunday's doubleheaders at Lawson-Biggs Field get underway at 1:00 p.m.

Down 3-0 after the opening frame, Hunter Seier's first collegiate homerun with two-outs in the top of the second got the Cougars on the board trimming the deficit to 3-1. Scoreless in the third, Ayden Hadley launched Barton's second of collegiate first big fly's with a leadoff shot drawing the deficit to 3-2.

Grant Nottlemann's RBI double bringing home Robby Bolin's one-out walk drawn pulled things even in the top of the fifth before three batters into the home half pushed the Raiders back in front for the final time 4-3 on a single scoring a leadoff walk and advancement on error.

In the sixth, the Cougars seized all momentum plating seven runs to take a 10-4 lead with four beneficial of two RBI hit-by-pitches drawn, an RBI walk and a passed ball adding another. Hadley's second hit of the game being the big dagger in the inning driving in two of his team high three RBIs.

Rose State managed just three runs over the final three innings with Barton putting the final touches on the opening victory adding a run in the eighth and three in the ninth.

All but one in the lineup taking an at-bat collected a hit, with Jaron Cotton, Bollin and Hadley leading with a trio of hits.

Seier concluded the multi-hit performances going 2-for-5 with a game high four RBIs with two furnished in the three-run ninth.

Making his collegiate debut, Kyler Horsman collected his first collegiate win out of the bullpen working three innings yielding two earned runs on three hits while walking and fanning one each.

Called upon in the second inning, Nathan Bowman stifled the Raider bats going three scoreless innings, surrendering two hits, three walks and striking out a team high four.

RECAP – Saturday (Game 1 - W 4-1)

Held without a hit through the opening three innings, Cole Schieffer's leadoff single and pair of Raider miscues pushed Barton to the lone lead needed, 3-1 as a passed ball scoring Schieffer and second error of inning pushing across Seier's reaching on an error and Austin Nitcher's 1-out walk.

Tacking an insurance run in the sixth as back-to-back Bolin and Nottlemann walks with 1-out created Barton's lone RBI on Cotton's single to rest the score at 4-1. 

Starter Bradley Feezer had a stellar Cougar debut notching the victory going four innings, allowing three hits, one run, walking three and fanning five.

Preston Golden and Colton Wahlstrom were nails out of the bullpen combining for three scoreless innings. Golden working two no-hit frames and walking two while Wahlstrom worked around two hits in his lone inning.

Cotton, Horsman, Schieffer and Seier fashioned Barton's four hits.

Utilizing five arms, starter Aidan Sowers lasted three innings, yielding six hits, three runs, one walk and three strikeouts in the no-decision effort.

Barton Baseball opens season taking two-of-three at Rose State

The Lady Panther wrestlers dropped out of the Class 6-5A rankings heading into Saturday's regional tournament in Dodge City. The only thing that mattered out West was making the top four in each bracket and qualifiying for state. Six Lady Panther wrestlers did just that and Great Bend scored 156 points for fourth in the toughest of the four 6-5A regionals. No. 2 Dodge City won with 190 points, followed by top-ranked Garden City with 174.5 points. No. 7 Derby scored 161 points for third, and No. 4 Hays also scored 156 points.

It could not be regional competition without another showdown between Lady Panther senior Daizy Gomez, ranked No. 2 at 130 pounds, and Dodge City senior Ariana De La Rosa, ranked No. 4. Gomez pinned her first two opponents in short order, including a 41-second win against fellow state qualifier Emma Vogel from Hays. De La Rosa was able to beat Gomez 5-4 for the championship.

Freshman Camdyn Post navigated her way through a tough 105-pound bracket to finish second and qualify for state. Ranked No. 5, Post won her first match against Hays by fall, then avenged an earlier-season loss to fourth-ranked Isabella Gutierrez by pinning her to reach the finals. It got no easier as third-ranked Amara Ehsa, a senior from Derby, defeated Post 14-3 for the championship.

Sophomore Kaylea McMullen advanced to the finals at 125 pounds. Out of the rankings for the first time this season, McMullen still pinned her first two opponents, including sixth-ranked Addison Otte of Hays. The reward was a championship match against top-ranked Maya Tarbet of Garden City, who tech-falled McMullen 17-1.

Sophomore Kirra Stevens also made it to the finals at 170 pounds. After a bye, she needed just 61 seconds to get by her Hays opponent. Goddard junior Breann Bradley held a comfortable lead against Stevens in the third period of the semifinals before Stevens turned it into a pin. Top-seeded Aariyah Jackson of Wichita North, with just four losses on the season, was able to defeat Stevens 3-0 in the finals.

With just eight wrestlers in the 190-pound bracket, Lady Panther sophomore Natalie Daniels had to like her chances to make it to state. Ranked No. 5, she pinned opponents from Ark City and Bishop Carroll to reach the finals. There, she was pinned by second-ranked Hayleen Martinez of Liberal.

Freshman Keira Leyva made the most of a tough bracket at 110 pounds, finishing third to punch her ticket to state. Leyva pinned each of her first two opponents from Maize South and Ark City to reach the semifinals where she was pinned by second-ranked Marina Loera of Garden City. Needing one win to qualify for state, Leyva needed just 89 seconds to pin her Derby opponent. She added a 57-second pin against Hays for good measure and to capture third.

Freshman Kayle Baldwin came up a win shy of state at 100 pounds. After a bye, she advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3 decision against Hays. Third-ranked Kaira Acosta pinned her way to the championship, including a pin against Baldwin in the semis. Baldwin was pinned by the fourth-place finisher from Bishop Carroll in the consolation semifinals.

Sophomore Braelyn Turner also came up one win shy of the state tournament at 120 pounds. She pinned her first opponent from Goddard only to get pinned by third-ranked Tionna Napue, the eventual champion from Hays, in round two. Turner used pins against Wichita South and Derby to reach the blood round where she was pinned by sixth-ranked Alyxia Serrano of Garden City.

Danica Cline was another Lady Panther who came up just short of state with a late loss at 155 pounds. She pinned her first opponent in 55 seconds before getting pinned by third-ranked Liliana Arroyo Alba in the quarters. Cline stayed alive by pinning her Garden City opponent and lost by fall to Ark City in the consolation semifinals. Both of Cline's losses on the day came against state qualifiers.

Josephine Blevins lost her first contested match to Wichita North at 145 pounds. She pinned her next opponent to stay alive, and was leading Wichita Northwest sophomore Lily Land before falling victim to a season-ending pin. Both of Blevins' losses came against state qualifiers. 

Shatarah Newton pinned her first opponent at 140 pounds before falling to top-ranked Lexi Burton of Hays in round two. She won a match on the back side but came up a pair of wins shy of state. Kaydence Demel finished her day at 1-2 with a pin at 135 pounds.

This year's Class 6-5A State Wrestling Championships will be held at Park City's Hartman Arena on Feb. 22-24.

Six Lady Panther wrestlers headed to state

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Fousseyni Traore scored 14 points and had eight rebounds to lead No. 21 BYU to a 72-66 victory over Kansas State on Saturday night.

Spencer Johnson and Jaxson Robinson added 12 points apiece for the Cougars (17-6, 5-5 Big 12) while Noah Waterman chipped in 11 points and Trevin Knell added 10. Aly Khalifa had a team-high six assists in his return to the lineup following a two-game absence because of the flu.

Arthur Kaluma led the Wildcats (15-9, 5-6) with 18 points and eight rebounds and Cam Carter added 14 points.

BYU led by 17 points in the second half, but Kansas State pulled within 66-64 with a run that included Kaluma’s 3-pointer with 1:11 left. Kaluma returned to help lead the rally after going to the locker room earlier in the second half with an ankle injury.

Robinson and Johnson countered with baskets in the final minute to help BYU keep the Wildcats from completing the comeback.

“We needed both of those buckets,” Robinson said. “Obviously, it all came down to the defensive end. We forced 16 turnovers and only turned the ball over seven times. Can’t complain about that.”

The Cougars missed five shots and three free throws over a five-minute stretch to open the door for Kansas State to rally.

“We just pressured the ball a lot more and picked up a little higher,” Kaluma said. “Went into a little bit of a press. I feel like we just had more energy.”

Kansas State struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm during the first half. The Wildcats committed nine turnovers and scored one field goal over the final four minutes before halftime.

BYU scored 14 points off 16 Kansas State turnovers by game’s end.

“We said this was going to be a 15-round fight,” Kansas State coach Jerome Tang said. “The problem is they got to throw the last punch tonight instead of us.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson scored 15 points to lead a balanced attack as No. 4 Kansas extended its home winning streak to 18 games with a 64-61 win over No. 13 Baylor on Saturday night.

Baylor got the ball with 14.2 seconds left and a chance to tie it, but Jayden Nunn's 3-point try from the corner was short. After Nicolas Timberlake missed the front end of a one-and-one, Ja'Kobe Walter's 3-point attempt caromed off the rim.

“I was hoping the game was slow, which it was,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “I was hoping the game was ugly and muddy, which it was, in large part because they turned it over and in large part because we couldn’t make shots.”

His team's 21 turnovers were what troubled Baylor coach Scott Drew.

“We've got to do a better job,” he said. ”You'll never beat anybody of quality, let alone Kansas, with 21 turnovers. That was the area that will we’ll focus on the most trying to get better at. I’m happy with holding them to 43 percent (from the field). We win games like that. We did a great job on the glass, 15-4 on second chance points.

“But if (Patrick) Mahomes throws six picks, (the Chiefs) are not going to win tomorrow (in the Super Bowl).”

Kansas, 13-0 at home this season, played without guard Kevin McCullar, who is out with a knee injury. Timberlake made his first start with the Jayhawks.

Kansas (19-5, 7-4 Big 12) got 14 points from Dajuan Harris, 13 from KJ Adams and 11 from Johnny Furphy.

Despite the win, Self was in a testy mood after the game.

“This is probably the least happy I’ve been after a win, because that’s not how you play basketball,” he said.

Baylor (17-6, 6-4) was led by Yves Missi with 21 points and Walter with 17.

“He’s a really good athlete, obviously,” Dickinson said of his counterpart on the Bears. “He just runs really good out of ball screens. That puts a lot of pressure on a defense when you've got really good guards out there that can stretch the floor.”

Kansas kept Baylor at arm's length for most of the second half. After Baylor trimmed the deficit to 37-36 early in the half, the Jayhawks responded with a 6-0 run. Baylor again trimmed it to a one-possession game at 44-41, but a 9-1 Kansas run opened a double-digit lead.

Baylor kept the game within reach, getting within 3 points but couldn't get over the hump.

The bench stepped up, with Timberlake scoring eight points.

“We were missing a lot with Kevin being out," Dickinson said. "He's one of the best players in college basketball. But we all felt pretty confident in one another to step up and make big plays. We’re at Kansas for a reason. It’s not a surprise that guys stepped up. That’s what we expected.”

Dickinson was the story in the first half. He scored 13, more than half his team's first 25 points. Kansas jumped out quickly, racing to an 18-6 lead by the second media timeout. In that opening stretch, the Jayhawks hit seven of their first 10 shots.

Dickinson picked up his second foul with 2:59 left in the first half and sat the rest of the half.

Kansas led by as many as 13 points in the first half before Baylor trimmed it to 34-28 at halftime.

The Chiefs ruled Thuney out for Sunday's game earlier in the week because of an injury to his pectoral muscle that he sustained in their divisional win in Buffalo. Veteran backup Nick Allegretti will get his second start in a Super Bowl in his place.

McKinnon remains a longshot to play, but the fact that he even put himself in position to be active Sunday is noteworthy. One of the unsung heroes of the Chiefs' win over the Eagles in last year's Super Bowl had surgery in early January to repair a core muscle injury, and few gave McKinnon any chance of making it back to the team this season.

McKinnon is especially useful in the passing game, where he had 25 catches and four touchdowns in 12 games this season.

Garoppolo then missed an open Emmanuel Sanders on a potential go-ahead deep shot in the closing minutes and threw a late interception to seal the loss.After playing most of his brief career as a front-runner, Purdy has shown the ability to come from behind in the playoffs if the Niners needed that. He led a game-winning touchdown drive in the fourth quarter of a divisional round win over Green Bay and then helped San Francisco rally from 17 points down to beat Detroit in the NFC title game.He's also a far better deep passer than Garoppolo with his 62.3 percent completion rate on deep throws leading all passers this season, according to Pro Football Focus.Beating Mahomes will require more than just offense and even though the Niners have taken a step back in recent weeks defensively, their strengths match up well with Kansas City.San Francisco is stout defending runs between the tackles, where the Chiefs have had their most success with Isiah Pacheco.The Niners are also one of the best teams defending the middle of the field thanks to linebackers Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw so they should be positioned to at least limit Travis Kelce's production.
