NEW YORK (AP) — Salvador Perez homered leading off the fourth inning to spark a four-run rally against Carlos Rodón, and the Kansas City Royals beat the New York Yankees 4-2 on Monday night to even their AL Division Series at one game apiece.

Four relievers held New York in check after an inconsistent Cole Ragans lasted four innings. Tommy Pham, Garrett Hampson and Maikel Garcia singled in runs for the Royals.

Garcia, moved up from ninth to first in Kansas City's batting order, had four hits.

Game 3 in the best-of-five playoff is Wednesday night at Kansas City, the Royals’ first postseason home game since the 2015 World Series.

Yankees star Aaron Judge went 1 for 3 with an infield single and is 1 for 7 with four strikeouts in the series. Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr., expected to finish second to Judge in AL MVP voting, was 0 for 5 with three strikeouts, dropping to 0 for 10 in the series.

All four Division Series opened 1-1 for the first time since the round started in 1995.

Giancarlo Stanton put the Yankees ahead with an RBI single in the third, but New York went 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position and is 3 for 19 in the two games.

Ragans allowed just the one run and three hits, striking out five and walking four. Winning pitcher Angel Zerpa and John Schreiber each followed with a hitless inning before Kris Bubic threw two scoreless innings. Lucas Erceg worked the ninth for his third save this postseason.

Erceg gave up a leadoff homer to Jazz Chisholm Jr. and a two-out single to Jon Berti but retired Gleyber Torres on a grounder to end it with slugger Juan Soto on deck.

Perez, at 34 the only remaining Royals player from their 2015 World Series championship, tied the score when he drove a 2-0 slider into the left-field seats. The nine-time All-Star entered 12 for 26 (.462) with three homers off Rodón, an old AL Central rival when he pitched for the Chicago White Sox.

Yuli Gurriel singled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Pham’s one-out single for a 2-1 lead, prompting cheers from NFL fans at the Kansas City Chiefs' home game against New Orleans at Arrowhead Stadium. Pham stole second and scored on a two-out single by Hampson.

Garcia greeted Ian Hamilton with an RBI single that put the Royals ahead 4-1.

Rodón, lined up to pitch a potential Game 5, gave up four runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. Twenty-four of the 32 home runs he has allowed this season have been solo shots.

Yankees: LHP Nestor Cortes (left flexor strain) took a step forward when he played catch Sunday, manager Aaron Boone said.

Yankees RHP Clarke Schmidt (5-5, 2.85 ERA) makes his first postseason start Wednesday. He was 0-2 with an 11.75 ERA in three relief appearances during the 2022 playoffs. The Royals had not announced their starter.

The weather was almost perfect but the competition was tough at Monday's Western Athletic Conference Championships at the Shannon Schartz Courts. All six Garden City players in action played in the Class 6A state tournament last fall. That showed in the results as the Lady Buffs scored 14 points to claim the team championship. In a hotly contested No. 1 doubles bracket, three teams, including Great Bend's pair of Mac Lindberg and Darcy Feist, tied for the title. Great Bend and Hays each scored nine points to tie for second in the team standings.

Three of the five teams playing in the No. 1 doubles bracket posted three wins on the day for the tie. Hays' Kaelin Maier and Alyse Zimmerman defeated Garden City's Chloe Ptacek and Jocelyn Kennedy 8-7 (5) in the first and best match of the day. That put Lindberg and Feist in the driver's seat as they opened with 8-2 wins over Liberal and Hays, then defeated Dodge City 8-4. The Lady Buffs, who won two matches in the 6A state tournament last season, defeated Lindberg and Feist 8-4 in the final match of the day to force the 3-way tie.

Paige Stacey also strung together a 3-0 day at No. 1 singles before a meeting with Garden City senior Danica Galia in the finals. Stacey defeated Liberal and Hays 8-2, then downed Dodge City 8-3 before falling to Galia 8-2 to drop to second place. 

The No. 2 singles bracket was almost as competitive as the No. 1 doubles bracket with three players winning two matches for a 3-way tie in second. Garden City took the title with a 4-0 record. Great Bend's Clarise Snapp came up a tie-break shy of second in the second-best match of the day. She downed Liberal 8-5 and defeated Dodge City 8-6 but lost an 8-7 (4) match to Hays in round two. Snapp fell to Garden City 8-0 in the final match of the day.

The No. 2 doubles bracket featured a 3-day tie for third place. Great Bend's Mackenzie LaViolette and Beth Hammeke defeated Liberal 8-2 but lost matches to Hays (8-2), Dodge City (8-5), and Garden City (8-0). Garden City's team finished at 4-0 and Hays won three matches to finish second.

Great Bend heads to Salina on Saturday for Class 5A regional action.

Feist and Lindberg tie for WAC title; Lady Panthers tie Hays for second

Fort Hays State University held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Bickle-Schmidt Athletic Complex Friday morning to kick off Homecoming weekend. The 20,000-square-foot complex in the south end zone of Lewis Field Stadium will be a game-changer, accommodating for the growth of FHSU’s athletic programs.

The estimated $11.5 million complex will be well-utilized by our football team and enhance the training capabilities for all student-athletes. The new complex is expected to be complete in November 2025.

“This facility represents a commitment to our growth both on and off the field and the trust and support our fans and this university have in our program,” said Myles Menges, defensive lineman for the Tiger football team. “Access to state-of-the-art equipment will help us train more effectively, recover quicker, grow stronger, and perform at our very best.”

Maintaining student-athlete health and reducing injury has always been at the forefront of FHSU Athletics.

“The new athletic complex offers advanced technology and resources to help prevent injuries and support recovery for the growing number of student-athletes at FHSU,” said FHSU senior Jessica Saunders, who competes in both volleyball and track and field. “These improvements will not only enhance our performance on the court but also enable athletes to recover more effectively when injuries occur.”

An expansive meeting room and equally impressive locker room will easily fit 130 athletes. In addition to the spacious meeting room, other spaces, like coaching offices, are much-needed additions. FHSU Director of Sports Medicine Nate Hepner said these expanded health resources, like the new sports medicine area, will take Fort Hays State to the next level.

“The new athletic training room within this facility will be on par with many Division I universities but will most importantly set us apart as a leader in sports medicine across the highly competitive MIAA Conference and Division II,” Hepner said.

“Our student-athletes demonstrate their unwavering commitment to Fort Hays State University, and the Bickle-Schmidt Athletic Complex is a testament to our dedication to promoting their health and well-being as they compete at the highest level,” said FHSU President Dr. Tisa Mason.

BRAINTREE, Mass. (AP) — Patriots captain Jabrill Peppers was arrested over the weekend on assault, strangulation and other charges following a disturbance at a home, police said Monday.

Peppers, 29, appeared for his arraignment Monday in Quincy District Court. He’s also charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a Class “B” substance believed to be cocaine, court records show.

Braintree police said they were called to a home for an altercation between two people early Saturday. The charges allege Peppers shoved a girlfriend to the ground, shoved her head into a wall, and put his hands around her neck to strangle her. Police said she was treated at home for injuries to her face and knees.

Peppers was arrested and posted $2,500 bail. His next court date is scheduled for Nov. 22, but he was allowed to waive his appearance.

In court, Peppers’ attorney, Marc Brofsky, said evidence in the case “sheds real doubt on the allegations, including videotaped evidence.” He said Peppers agreed not to have contact with the woman.

Coach Jerod Mayo told reporters Monday the team is still gathering information on Peppers’ arrest. He said Peppers will be allowed at the team’s facilities for now.

“We don’t know enough to say he shouldn’t be in the building,” Mayo said.

The situation has been addressed with the team, Mayo said, adding that the “players need to know about it so we can learn from whatever happened.”

The Patriots signed Peppers, a safety in his third season with the team, to an extension over the summer. Peppers was originally drafted by Cleveland in 2017 and spent two seasons with the Browns before playing for the New York Giants for three seasons.

Peppers, who is dealing with a shoulder injury, didn’t play Sunday in the Patriots 15-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Mayo said the Patriots were aware of the arrest on Saturday.

As he approached the plate with two outs in the ninth inning, with two runners on and the score tied, Castellanos had a hunch he could win Game 2 of the NL Division Series for the Philadelphia Phillies. Even in the face of an 1-2 slider against Mets reliever Tylor Megill. “I did like that pitch when I saw it,” Castellanos said. The Barton Community College swimming teams sustained their early season success Friday afternoon competing in the annual Sunflower Showdown held at the Robinson Natatorium in Lawrence, Kansas.

Featured as the lone two-year school, the Cougar men exhibited a runner-up finish against the three team Kansas field while their counterparts, the Lady Cougars ran into a pair of top tier four-year programs conducting a third-place finish in the field of four. Claiming the men's title was the University of Saint Mary's from the NAIA while host school and Division I powerhouse University of Kansas captured the women's crown.

Guimaraes secured his pair of golds in the 200-yard IM with a 2:00.25 stoppage while maneuvering through the waves with a personal best 4:58.45 in the long distance 500-yard freestyle.

Barton's other individual title came from freshman&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mswimdive/2024-25/bios/ribeiro_joao_m0f9">Joao Ribeiro</a>&nbsp;out stretching the 10-fielded 50-yard freestyle field with a personal best 21.98, with teammate&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mswimdive/2024-25/bios/sein_cameron_yvef">Cameron Sein</a>&nbsp;finishing runner-up in 22.01.

Controlling first half possession against the wind, the Barton Community College women's soccer team maintained second half control with the advantage to rattle the net twice for a 2-0 victory at Coffeyville Community College.

The victory improves Barton to 5-4-2 in league play and 7-4-2 overall while keeping the Red Ravens winless in the KJCCC at 0-7-3 in dropping to 1-8-3.

Next Saturday Barton begins its second time through a tough three-game stretch against ranked opponents hosting 9th ranked Kansas City Kansas Community College for a 3:00 p.m. kick followed by a Wednesday road trip to No. 18 Hutchinson Community College before 12th ranked Cowley College comes to town on Saturday, October 19.

The Cougars had a few opportunities in the first half but in the final forty-five minutes Barton peppered the box consistently with the initial goal coming with 30:31 remaining.

Fielding a varsity and junior varsity team, the teams competed in a three-game series of individual games concluded with nine baker games.

Barton's varsity squad accrued 4785 pins falling 49 back of third place KWU JV and 295 back of the Coyotes varsity squad while Bake University claimed the top spot with a final tally 5198 pins.

Campbell Peterson with his third place trophyMaking his collegiate debut, Campbell Peterson paced the Cougar squad throughout the 46 competitor field amassing the third most pins of 629. The hometown product of Salina raced out to a sizzling start destroying 217 and 216 in his opening two games before closing with a final round of 196, for a 10-frame average score 210.

Tossing on Barton's second entered team, sophomore Khalil Sanchez rounded out the final top-10 finishers for the Cougars tallying the eighth most pin destruction of 577 with games of 183, 181 and 213 to lead the junior varsity team.

Barton Men's Bowling starts 2024-25 strong at KWU Invite; Peterson finishes third

The No. 9 Lady Panther volleyball team continues to make big waves on the court. In Saturday's home tournament, Great Bend posted a 5-0 record to win the invite, bumping their overall season record to 18-2. Head Coach Shelly Duvall notched her 200th career win as a head coach.

"The girls knew we were within five matches of my 200th win, so they came in ready to get it done," Duvall said. "The only way these wins happen is because of the amazing athletes I've been able to coach the past nine years. The credit goes to them for sure. I'm very blessed to be able to coach the game I love."

Duvall's 200th win technically came on a forfeit after a disciplinary move from Liberal halted its tournament. Minus a 3-set win against Salina Central, the Lady Panthers were otherwise dominant in straight-set wins against Hutchinson, Newton, and Wichita West.

Even the win against Central was mostly dominant with Great Bend taking the first set 25-16. After a 26-24 falter in the middle set, the Lady Panthers answered with a 25-8 third set. Senior Cassie Ellegood put down 13 kills in the win, followed by nine from sophomore Alex Mayers, six from senior Kara Feist, and five from freshman Mikayla Minton. AP Top 25: Texas returns to No. 1, Alabama drops to No. 7 after upsets

NEW YORK (AP) — Alex Verdugo hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning and saved at least one run with a sliding catch along the left-field line, boosting the New York Yankees over the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Saturday night in their AL Division Series opener.

New York’s Gleyber Torres and Kansas City’s MJ Melendez hit two-run homers in a back-and-forth game in which the Royals wasted leads of 1-0, 3-2 and 5-4 and the Yankees failed to hold 2-1 and 4-3 margins. It was the first postseason game with five lead changes, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Kansas City pitchers tied their season high with eight walks, forcing in a pair of runs in the fifth inning. The Yankees were just 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position before Verdugo lined a single off loser Michael Lorenzen.

Verdugo’s hit scored Jazz Chisholm Jr., who singled leading off and stole second on a play allowed to stand following a video review. Yankees manager Aaron Boone started Verdugo in left over rookie Jasson Domínguez in a defense-influenced decision. Verdugo entered the game in a 2-for-34 skid at the plate

With the Yankees trailing 3-2, Verdugo made a sliding catch on Michael Massey’s fourth-inning fly just inside the line to strand two runners. The ball hit Verdugo’s right wrist just below his glove and bounced off his chest before he grabbed it with his bare left hand.

Chisholm, playing third base this year for the first time after the Yankees acquired him from Miami at the July trade deadline, made three fine defensive plays, two with the help of first baseman Oswaldo Cabrera, starting because of Anthony Rizzo’s fractured fingers.

Four Yankees relievers combined to allow only an unearned run over four innings after ace Gerrit Cole came out, unhappy with his performance. Clay Holmes, dropped from his closer’s job last month, worked 1 2/3 innings for the win. Luke Weaver got four straight outs for the save in his postseason debut.

Yankees star Aaron Judge went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts, and Royals standout Bobby Witt Jr. was 0 for 5, barking at plate umpire Adam Hamari after a called third strike in the ninth.

Juan Soto went 3 for 5 and threw out Salvador Perez in the second inning trying to score from second on Melendez’s single to right. Kansas City first baseman Yuli Gurriel threw out runners at the plate on grounders in the first and fifth.

After a day off between Games 1 and 2, the series between the AL-best Yankees and wild-card Royals resumes Monday night. These teams met in four playoffs from 1976-80, with the Yankees winning the first three and getting swept in the last.

Cole allowed four runs — three earned — and seven hits in five-plus innings. Royals starter Michael Wacha gave up three runs, four hits and three walks in four-plus innings.

The Barton Community College women's bowling team opened the 2024-25 season with a third-place finish at the Kansas Wesleyan University Invite Wednesday at the Alley in Salina, Kansas.

Featuring a trio of teams competing over three individual and nine baker games, the Cougars came out with a total pin count of 3936 falling 107 back of host Kansas Wesleyan University's 4043 accumulation and Baker University's tournament high 4246 pin count.

Leading Barton in the 19-participant field was freshman&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wbowl/2024-25/bios/thetford_jaelinn_ac5t">JaeLinn Thetford</a>&nbsp;piling up a three-game mark of 514 falling 10 back of Baker's Kaleigh Buckalew's top series 524 score. Thetford started off hot with an opening best round 201 before concluding with games of 154 and 159.

On the girls' side, the Class 5A ranks have been dominated in recent years by the likes of Lenexa's St. James Academy and Overland Park. A pair of Wichita private schools are making their push back into the top of the class. At Saturday's The Rush at Brown Thrush Invitational in Wichita, Bishop Carroll edged Kapaun by three spots for the win with 45 points. Great Bend scored 52 points for third place, 60 spots ahead of fourth-place De Soto.

Bishop Carroll sophomore Gwen Sattler won the girls' race by 23 seconds in 18:42. Five of the top eight runners hailed from Carroll or Kapaun.

All five Great Bend scorers finished in the top 15. Junior Sienna Smith broke up the monopoly in seventh place with a time of 19:22.67 to miss fifth place by just three seconds. Junior Reese Bullard ran ninth in 19:36.53, followed by senior Marissa Boone in 10th in 19:40.40, and sophomore Teegan Guerra in 11th in 19:53.60. Sophomore Bella Long scored the final team points in 15th in 20:17.56. Sophomore Teah King finished 18th in 20:40.87. Senior Kate Welcher placed 30th in 21:37.83, just ahead of freshman Samantha Negaard in 31st with a time of 21:40.47. Lady Panthers finish third at Wichita XC meet; boys seventh

There may be no standard definition of a sports "superfan," but everyone knows one when they see one. Cleveland's John Adams comes to mind. The Guardians fan attended every home baseball game from 1973 until his death, at the age of 71, in 2023. He literally beat the drum from the stands for 48 seasons, or more than 3,500 games.

Kansas City has its own Superfan. Chris Coats, a United States Postal Service employee from Raytown, Mo., has been attending Royals games for most of his life, including 31 of the team's 33 playoff games since 2014. Coats attended the two American League Wild Card games in Baltimore earlier this week and is sticking around on the east coast for the Divisional Series that begins Saturday at Yankee Stadium. The goal is to make it back to Kauffman Stadium for Wednesday's game three in the series.

"It's going to be about 18 hours after Monday night to try to get back by Wednesday," Coats said in a Friday appearance on 1590 KVGB/95.5 FM's "Sports Day" show. "I think we can manage. We did 16 to Baltimore and we did okay. I've got a home-game streak going of over 1,600 games. I've got to make it."

With 81 home games a season, Coats' streak dates back more than 20 seasons. Things picked up around 2009 when Coats began following the Royals to other stadiums. Wearing a promotional Royals flag as a cape, he made the Fox Sports Kansas City broadcast at a game in Houston. The nickname "Superfan Chris" was christened.

"I was walking back and I found Ryan Lefebvre," Coats said. "We just got to talking. I had driven to Houston and I told him I was driving to Pittsburgh. He said, 'Oh wow, we'll have to get you on TV there, too. That's a heck of a drive.'"

Coats became a regular on Royals broadcasts as the team continued to struggle with losing seasons from 2004 to 2012. The Royals finished the 2013 season at 86-76, then made it to Game Seven of the 2014 World Series. Coats was one of several fans that postseason featured on the side of buses in downtown Kansas City.

Coats has now been to all 30 Major League Baseball cities but has yet to visit the new Truist Park in Atlanta or LoanDepot Park in Miami. Also a Kansas City Chiefs and Missouri Tigers fan, he frequently attends football games in the fall.

"I get five weeks off every year but I've been saving a lot of that every year for something like this," Coats said of the MLB playoffs. "I asked for the whole month of October off and they gave it to me. I told them I'd come back as long as the Royals aren't playing. I don't expect to use all the time, but I guess I will if they make it to the World Series."

During his streak, Coats has married and had two boys. The youngest son, at just five years old, has attended between 50 and 60 Royals games this year and made the 16-hour trip to Baltimore with his father.

"I wanted to include him on the ride," Coats said. "I worked Monday, then I packed up the car and we drove. We had about 24 hours to get there. We made it work and what an incredible series to watch."

Coats has watched games from the old Yankee Stadium and the new park that is already 15 years old. As discussion in Kansas City turns to a new downtown stadium, Coats said there are plenty of good examples to choose from.

"A lot of the National League ballparks are pretty good," he said. "Pittsburgh and San Diego, there's just something about the background. Even St. Louis, with the Arch in the background, the downtown atmosphere is pretty cool. I know the Royals are pushing for it and the fans don't like it but it's something else."

Kansas City will play games one and two of the American League Divisional Series at Yankee Stadium on Saturday and Monday evenings. Game three moves to Kansas City with a time to be determined.
