
Local historian Karen Nueforth passed away on March 7th.


Karen dedicated her life to community service and historical
research. Her knowledge of local history and genealogy have been lost
forever and Karen will be missed.


Karen was the Executive Co-Director and Research Director at the
Barton County Historical Society and was a twice a month guest on
“Pages in Time, the New Shows” on KVGB Radio.


A Celebration of Life service and reception will be held at the First
Congregational Church of Christ in Great Bend on Tuesday evening June
8th at 7pm.


She will be buried at the Clarence Township Cemetary at a later date.

Karen Nueforth

Larned - Jesse Rocha Medina, 89, passed away May 30, 2021 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Jesse was born January 11, 1932 in Offerle, Kansas to Sebastian and Julia Rocha Medina and raised in Kinsley, Kansas by his grandfather, Santiago Rocha and great aunt Lupe Rocha.&nbsp; Jesse was active in high school sports lettering in track, basketball and football.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Jesse enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 18 and served in the Korean War between the years of 1951 and 1953 as a Forward Observer.&nbsp;

On October 9, 1954 Jesse married Amelia Garcia in Larned; Amelia preceded him in death on October 11, 1973.

He later married Darlene Heinrich on August 1, 1987 in Larned Kansas.

As a lifetime area resident, Jesse was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Jesse held several professions in Larned, after attending trade school in Chicago for TV repair and became a small business owner of a TV repair shop in 1965, Facilities Electrical Maintenance Supervisor for Larned State Hospital and finally the maintenance supervisor at Diversicare of Larned nursing home before retiring at the age of 84.

Jesse is survived by his wife Darlene, Larned, three daughters, Patricia (Donnie) Harper, Larned, Linda (George) Spady, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Caroline “Sophia” Smith, Larned; two sons, Michael (Paula Michelle) Medina, Katy, Texas, Steven (Ruth) Medina, Houston, Texas; sixteen grandchildren, thirty-nine great grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Amelia Garcia Medina; his grandparents; and infant brother Sebastian Medina Jr.

Funeral mass will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 9th&nbsp;at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Bernard Felix presiding. Visitation will be Tuesday June 8th&nbsp;9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;Vigil and Rosary service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas with Military Graveside Rites.

Walter B. Moore, 63, passed away May 29, 2021, at his home in Kearney, Neb. He was born May 28, 1958, at Chicago, Ill. to Walter B. Moore, Jr. &amp; LaVerna (Ohnmacht) Moore.&nbsp;

A resident of Kearney, Neb. for the last 11 years, Walter was an over the road truck driver. He loved being in his truck and exploring the country.&nbsp;

Survivors include, five children; three brothers, John Moore and wife Jeanne of Colo., Joseph Moore of Great Bend, and James Moore and wife Phyllis of Okla.; a sister, Mary Moore of Mo.; three grandchildren; two nephews; and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Christina Moore.&nbsp;

She was born November 11, 1941 in Alamosa, CO, the daughter of Cecil and Lucy Whitman Mount.&nbsp; Moving from LaJara, CO, she was a longtime area resident of Jetmore and had a Masters in Special Education where she taught for 30 years and later worked at Walmart for 8 years.

She was a member of the Jetmore United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma and Theti Pi.

In LaJara, CO, she married Richard Moore.&nbsp; He passed away in 1996. In Hugo, CO, she married Walter Moore.&nbsp; He passed away.

Survivors include: daughter, Sally (Scott) Kreger, Jetmore; son, Steve (Joyce) Moore, Meade; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Marian Ellen Snow.

Henrietta J. “Hankie” Bartonek, 95, passed away May 31, 2021, at Locust Grove Village, LaCrosse.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born September 21, 1925, in rural Olmitz, to Charles and Anna (Bittner) Menzer.&nbsp;&nbsp;Hankie married Kenneth Bartonek Feb. 13, 1947 in Olmitz.&nbsp;&nbsp;He died Aug. 13, 1977.

Hankie, a life time resident of Rush County, was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Olmitz.&nbsp;&nbsp;Having a servant’s heart, she was a long time cook for Otis Bison elementary school, Central Kansas Medical Center and the LaCrosse Hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;Never having idle hands, Hankie also worked tirelessly as the Otis City Librarian and volunteered as a Senior Companion.&nbsp;&nbsp;Above all, she was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, always enjoying time spent with her family.&nbsp;

Survivors include one daughter, Doris Straub of Otis; three granddaughters, Melissa Swift and husband Eric, Tami Christiansen and husband Curtis, Sharnelle Herrman and husband Chris; and seven great grandchildren, Kendra Swift, Aiden Swift, Chandler Christiansen, Gage Christiansen, Courtney Christiansen, Hunter Herrman, Brayden Herrman, and Makenzy Herrman.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was preceded in passing by a son-in-law, Kenneth “Mert” Straub.

John Herman Miller, 95, May 30, 2021, passed away at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born March 12, 1926, in rural Albert, to Conrad and Anna (Rients) Miller. John married Norma Jean Gilliland Aug 21, 1949.&nbsp;&nbsp;She died Aug. 4, 2010.

John was a lifelong farmer, being proud of living his entire life on the very farm in which he was born.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, rural Albert.

Survivors include one son, Ronald Miller of Great Bend; two daughters, Karen McBrayer and husband Andrew of Edmond, Okla., and Debra White and husband Mark of Cold Spring, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Marshall Miller, Michael Miller and wife Jill, Scott McBrayer and wife Jenny, Jeff McBrayer and wife Sandra, and Heather White; and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Abbie Miller, Louis Miller, Edward Miller, Martin Miller, Eilt Miller, Carl Miller; one sister Tina Marshall; one great granddaughter, River Rose McBrayer; and daughter-in-law, Ann Miller.

John Herman Miller

Violet June Widener Kasselman, 98, of Ellinwood, KS, went to be with her Lord and Savior, peacefully, surrounded by her family May 30, 2021.&nbsp; Violet married Lt. Jg. Leonard Earl Kasselman, of the Navy Air Corp, on November 18, 1945, in Ellinwood, Kansas.&nbsp; Leonard preceded her in death October 10, 2005.

She was born May 30, 1923 in Stafford County, KS, to Harry Widener and Esther Marchand Widener Mabry. She was one of six children blessed to this union.&nbsp; She graduated from Stafford High School in 1940, then attended Hays College where she received her teaching certificate.&nbsp; She taught eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse in Stafford County for several years.&nbsp;

After several naval station moves, Violet and Leonard made their permanent residence south of Ellinwood, Kansas. Violet was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Ellinwood. Her love of Christ led her to be very active in her church organizations, with leadership roles locally and in the church conference.&nbsp; She was involved in 4-H with her children as a project leader and held positions on the County Extension Board, and was involved in local extension work.&nbsp; Later in life, she worked in the Register of Deeds office in the Barton County Courthouse. Violet was also very active in the Ellinwood Historical Society, the Ellinwood District Hospital Auxiliary, as well as the American Legion Auxiliary.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Violet is survived by her children; her sons, Dennis (Jean) Kasselman of Overland Park, KS, and Kent Kasselman of Jacksonville Beach, FL;&nbsp; her daughters, Kathy (Max) Roberts of Great Bend, KS and Patty (Andrew) Sauber of Louisburg, KS; Her grandchildren, Melissa (Tony) Boll, Andrew Kasselman, Matthew Leonard (Jenna) Sauber, Merideth (Jack) Trotter and Casey (Michael) Batchman; her great-grandchildren, Mikayla Boll, Sophia Sauber, Grant Boll, Wyatt Sauber, Violet Kasselman, Catherine Sauber, Emma Violet Sauber, Stella Kasselman, Lucas Sauber, Jackson Trotter, Hazel Kasselman and Ryan Trotter; Sister-In-Law Marilyn Kasselman; and multiple nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Violet was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Leonard Kasselman; siblings and spouses Derril (Florence) Widener, Austin (Bernice) Widener, Yvonne (Leonard) Widener Sittner, Darlene (Eston) Widener Schwartz, and Clede (Juanita) Widener; daughter-in-law Lori Kasselman.

Leonard Earl Kasselman, of the Navy Air Corp, on November 18, 1945, in Ellinwood, Kansas.&nbsp; Leonard preceded her in death October 10, 2005.She was born May 30, 1923 in Stafford County, KS, to Harry Widener and Esther Marchand Widener Mabry. She was one of six children blessed to this union.&nbsp; She graduated from Stafford High School in 1940, then attended Hays College where she received her teaching certificate.&nbsp; She taught eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse in Stafford County for several years.&nbsp;After several naval station moves, Violet and Leonard made their permanent residence south of Ellinwood, Kansas. Violet was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Ellinwood. Her love of Christ led her to be very active in her church organizations, with leadership roles locally and in the church conference.&nbsp; She was involved in 4-H with her children as a project leader and held positions on the County Extension Board, and was involved in local extension work.&nbsp; Later in life, she worked in the Register of Deeds office in the Barton County Courthouse. Larned – Rodney Dean Befort, 59, passed away May 28, 2021 in Larned.

He was born May 11, 1962 in Goodland, KS, the son of Donald Lee and Darlene Heinrich Befort.&nbsp;&nbsp;A longtime area resident, moving to Larned from Granbury, TX in 1993, he was a professional sheet rocker and all-around handy man.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, where he was very active in his younger years.&nbsp;&nbsp;Rodney loved helping others, especially his family, and most recently he helped his brother install a new shower.&nbsp;

He married Lori Devine and they later divorced.

Survivors include: his mother, Darlene Befort, Larned, KS; son, Bradley, Granbury, TX; three brothers, Randall (Kim) Befort, Granite Bay, CA, Ryan Befort, Belpre, KS, Rodger Befort, Denton, TX; two sisters, Sandra (Scott) Befort Coffelt and Stacia (Kevin) Befort Bowers, both of Olathe, KS; eight nieces and nephews, Joshua, Tana, Trevor, Austin, Laci, Gabriel, Nickalaus, Rhianna and two great nieces, Taylen and Parker.

After a full, happy life,&nbsp;&nbsp;Lila Svoboda Robinson, was reunited with her family in heaven on October 20, 2020.&nbsp;Lila was born in Hill City, KS on October 30, 1924 to Louis and Anna (Lilak) Svoboda.&nbsp;&nbsp;She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Carol and Betty, brother, Bill and husband, Winfred(Rob) Robinson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lila’s adventure in life began at an early age, living through the events of the Great Depression.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She graduated from High School, in 1941, then attended Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas, where she received her teaching certificate in 1943 and taught for one year at the Saline River School in Ellis County and a second year at the Cheyenne Bottoms School in Barton County.&nbsp;&nbsp;While working for a brief period at the Munitions Depot during WWII, Lila joined the United States Cadet Nurse Corps program and attended St. Mary’s College in Leavenworth, Kansas, receiving her Registered Nurses’ License in 1947.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was especially proud of this accomplishment and continued her nursing career at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.&nbsp;

She met her future husband, Winfred(Rob) Robinson on a blind date while attending nursing school.&nbsp;&nbsp;The date turned into a love story, and 51 happy and successful years together.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She was an extremely proud and very devoted mother of their seven children, Don, Ted, Bill, Karla, Chuck, Pam, Tricia, ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Her appetite for knowledge and education was insatiable, with a passion for reading anything and everything.&nbsp;&nbsp;Interests included art appreciation, coin collecting, sign language and anything to do with Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;She enjoyed a good debate on all subjects including politics, religion, sports, history, with a broad range of knowledge, past and present, but was happy to take time to listen and discuss, without passing judgment, anything that was on your mind.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lila was always busy, and knew no strangers but was a friend to everyone, offering a helping hand in any way possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her love for&nbsp;&nbsp;children was displayed by her involvement with Operation Kinderlift while stationed overseas in Germany.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was very active in PTA, 4-H, FHA, Sunday School, the Methodist Church, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, you name it, she would volunteer.&nbsp;&nbsp;She lived life to the fullest, with joy in her heart, all while humming her favorite tune along the way.

Graveside inurnment services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, June 5, 2021 at Pawnee Rock Cemetery, with Reverend Dick Ogle presiding.

Gary, a resident of Stafford County since 1973 coming from Barton County, was a long time truck driver in the oil field, working for Sioux Tank.&nbsp;&nbsp;In earlier years, he worked for Cottonwood Cattle Co. and Dresser Industries.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a member of NRA, Kansas Rifle Association, USA Shooting and enjoyed riding motorcycles.

Survivors include, wife, Susan Gray of the home; one son, Gary Lynn Gray and wife Angela Lynn of Radium; two brothers, Don Gray of Hutchinson and David Gray of Radium; one sister, Mary Joan Clark of Radium; three step grandchildren, Tristin, William, and Keane and many step great grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was preceded in death by one&nbsp;&nbsp;brother, Robert Gray.

Carma Jean Tinkel, 68, passed away peacefully May 18, 2021, at the University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. She was born November 13, 1952, to Emil and Alverta (Steinert) Juergensen. On November 29, 1975, Carma was united in marriage to Darrell Tinkel in Great Bend.

As a lifetime resident of Great Bend, Carma was a clerical assistant for Thurman Morrison and Associates and CPI.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Carma was a bright smile and a true joy to be around! She enjoyed traveling, being with her siblings, stock car racing, making new friends and most of all spending time with her two grandsons, Korbin and Krew.

Survivors include, her husband, Darrell Tinkel of the home; a son, Randy Tinkel and wife Jillian of Wamego, Kan.; two grandchildren, Korbin and Krew; two brothers, Fred Juergensen and wife Darla of Gower, Mo., and Louis Juergensen and wife Karen of Omaha, Neb.; two sisters, Marilyn Keller of San Antonio, Texas, and Vera Bortolotti of Council Bluffs, Iowa; three sister-in-laws, Beverly Juergensen of Great Bend, Judy Rabenseifner of Great Bend and Sheryl Richardson of Great Bend; and many nieces and nephews.

Patricia A. McConnell, 83, Salina, passed away November 24, 2020 at Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born September 8, 1937, in Great Bend, KS, to Leonard and Clara (Birzer) Bahr.&nbsp;

She married Warren Ervin McConnell on October 6, 1959.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Patricia worked as a Registered Nurse at Clara Barton Hospital up until her retirement.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and Altar Society, Hoisington.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Clara Bahr; and brother, Donald Bahr.

Survivors include; her husband, Warren “Ervin”; children, Edwinda (Wayne) Day of Isabel, Weldon (Karla) McConnell of Salina, Jan (Jody) Pfannenstiel of Salina, and Renee (Scott) Suppes of Great Bend; seven grandchildren, Miranda Flores, Kristen Flores, Erica Harford, Sarah McConnell, Nathan McConnell, Lauren Suppes and MaKayla Suppes; sisters, Luella Call of Rolla, MO, Rita Bahr of Jones, OK, Jenelda (Leo) Moore of Valdez, AK, and Jane Dietz of Milberger, KS;&nbsp;&nbsp;great-grandchildren, Dakotah and Colton Harlin of Ellensburg, WA, John, Matthew, Kallie, and Lucas Harford of Salina and Brook Harford of Wichita.&nbsp;

Ila Mae Edwards, 89, longtime Bison, Kansas, resident passed away Monday, May 24, 2021, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Ila Mae was born December 11, 1931, in Bison, Kansas, the daughter of Morton and Ella (Gisick) Lewis.&nbsp;&nbsp;She attended all 12 years of school in Bison, Kansas, and graduated from Bison High School, Bison, Kansas, in 1949.&nbsp;

She was united in marriage to Zane K. Edwards December 9, 1951, at the United Methodist Church, Bison, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;He preceded her in death April 8, 2018.

The couple made their home on a farm north of Bison, Kansas, where Ila Mae was a homemaker and farm wife.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Bison, Kansas.&nbsp;

Ila Mae enjoyed hand quilting quilts, reading, and cooking for her family.

Survivors include:&nbsp;&nbsp;two sons, David Edwards (Nancy), Norman, Oklahoma, and Brian Edwards (Karen), Bison, Kansas; one daughter, Gay Graham (Ron), Colorado Springs, Colorado; 11 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Roy Lewis; and one sister, Betty Schleuning.

Justin Blade Nunez, 25, died May 20, 2021.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born March 15, 1996, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Jaime and Breta (Brack) Nunez.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Justin attended Hoisington High School and Barton Community College. He worked for Venture Corporation.&nbsp;

Justin’s favorite thing to do was fishing and time spent at the lake. He especially loved spending time with friends and family.&nbsp;

He is survived by his fiance, Kayla Baxley and 3 month old daughter, Adalinn Ora Marie Nunez of the home; a daughter, Serenity Rose Nunez of Wichita; mother, Breta Nunez of Great Bend; father, Jaime Nunez of Durango, Mexico; brother, Brandon Brack of Hoisington; sister, Jazmin Nunez and fiance Chris Snow of Colby; and a nephew, Isaac Snow.&nbsp;

Darrell Leroy Holden, 76, passed away May 22, 2021, at Via Christi St. Francis, Wichita. He was born August 3, 1944, at Lakin, to Ralph &amp; Vera (Deshler) Holden. He married Roberta Smith June 26, 1966, in Great Bend.&nbsp;

A Great Bend resident for over 50 years, Darrell was a roustabout mechanic for FG Hall. He enjoyed doing any type of mechanic work, collecting guns and could handcraft just about anything you could think of. Darrell was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam War. He especially loved to spoil his grandchildren.&nbsp;

Survivors include, his wife, Roberta Holden of the home; two sons, Danyon Holden and wife Brenda, and Darrell Holden and wife Aimee, all of Great Bend; a daughter, DeVonna Jaske and husband Kevin of Lyons; a sister, Linda Thornton of Pawhuska, Okla.; twelve grandchildren, Michael, Ty, Kenny, Stephen, Ryan, Breanna, Jacob, Braeden, Avah, Layton, and Noah; and eight great grandchildren, Leon, Elie, Luke, Nolan, Karter, Colt, Holden, and Gideon. Gloria May Nuss, a 29 year resident of Kettle Falls, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2021 in Colville, WA.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born on September 23, 1932 in Dodge City, KS to Hubert and Mary (Pizinger) Ailslieger.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Gloria grew up in Kansas graduating from Hoisington High School with the class of 1950.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was in high school where she met Bill Nuss, the man she would eventually marry.&nbsp;&nbsp;After graduation, Bill enlisted into the U.S. Navy and Gloria attended the Wesley Hospital School of Nursing in Wichita, Kansas, where she graduated first in her class in 1953. Many letters were written between the two during their time apart until his honorable discharge brought him back to Hoisington where they were wed at the Methodist Church in Hoisington on September 4, 1955.&nbsp;&nbsp;The newlywed couple moved to Texas while Bill attended Sam Houston State College and Gloria worked in the operating room for the local hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bill was hired by Westinghouse and that brought them to Athens, GA and it was there that they welcomed their two children, Debbie in 1958 and Scott in 1961.&nbsp;&nbsp;The family spent several years in Georgia until a job opportunity with Boeing brought the family across the country to Bellevue, WA.&nbsp;&nbsp;Wanting to get away from the rain and gray skies of the Seattle area, Gloria and Bill ventured to Kennewick, WA where they stayed until Bill’s retirement in 1988.&nbsp;&nbsp;They made one last move in 1992 to Kettle Falls, WA to be near their daughter, Debbie and her family.&nbsp;&nbsp;Gloria loved going to yard sales, antiquing and taking cruise ship vacations with Bill and visiting Scott and his wife Dena in Clearfield Utah, which usually included a trip to Wendover Nevada so Gloria could play the slot machines she enjoyed. Sadly, Bill passed away in 1997 and Gloria was never the same as he was the love and purpose of her life.&nbsp;&nbsp;That void of his loss was filled with volunteering with the Mt. Carmel Auxiliary and Relay for Life, reading, crossword puzzles, and most importantly, spending time with her granddaughters, Shannon and Bridget, whom she was so very proud of.&nbsp;&nbsp;Gloria joked that it was harder on her when these girls left home for college than when her own children left home. She was their biggest cheerleader during their years in college and graduate school, as they became a lawyer and veterinarian. Gloria was the epitome of a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and she will be greatly missed.

Donald Eugene “Don” Deines, born February 11, 1930, in Hays, Kansas, 
son of Palmer E. and Caroline (Massier) Deines, departed this life on 
May 25, 2021, at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, in
 WaKeeney, Kansas at the age of 91.

Donald was baptized February 23, 1930 at Christ Lutheran Church, 
Ellis, Kansas, and was confirmed into the membership of Bethlehem 
Lutheran Church in WaKeeney on February 3, 1952, where he has been an 
active member. Donald served on the church council for 6 years and was a
 sponsor for the Senior High Youth Group at the church for 4 years. 
Donald attended rural Trego Elementary schools and was a 1949 graduate 
of the Trego Community High School, participating in all sports during 
his high school years.

On April 14, 1953, Donald was united in marriage to Helen Caroline 
Zachman at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ellis. They made their home on 
the farm 1 ½ miles southeast of WaKeeney. To this union one son, Dean 
Alan, was born.

Donald was a farmer and stockman, also for many years employed with 
Deines Construction Company of WaKeeney, helping to construct several 
churches, businesses, and homes, locally and in the nearby communities.

Donald loved the outdoors and spent many hours fishing, hunting and 
trapping. He also was an avid sports fan, especially football and 
baseball, keeping up with all teams. Donald played baseball and 
basketball on the town teams for many years after his school years.

Donald’s biggest pride and joy are his son Dean and daughter-in-law 
Christine. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Palmer E. and 
Caroline Deines; and sister Eleanor Swank.

Donald is survived by his wife Helen; son Dean (Christine) Deines of

son of Palmer E. and Caroline (Massier) Deines, departed this life on 
May 25, 2021, at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, in
 WaKeeney, Kansas at the age of 91.Donald was baptized February 23, 1930 at Christ Lutheran Church, 
Ellis, Kansas, and was confirmed into the membership of Bethlehem 
Lutheran Church in WaKeeney on February 3, 1952, where he has been an 
active member. Donald served on the church council for 6 years and was a
 sponsor for the Senior High Youth Group at the church for 4 years. 
Donald attended rural Trego Elementary schools and was a 1949 graduate 
of the Trego Community High School, participating in all sports during 
his high school years.On April 14, 1953, Donald was united in marriage to Helen Caroline 
Zachman at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ellis. They made their home on 
the farm 1 ½ miles southeast of WaKeeney. To this union one son, Dean 
Alan, was born.Donald was a farmer and stockman, also for many years employed with 
Deines Construction Company of WaKeeney, helping to construct several 
churches, businesses, and homes, locally and in the nearby communities.Donald loved the outdoors and spent many hours fishing, hunting and 
trapping. He also was an avid sports fan, especially football and 
baseball, keeping up with all teams. Donald played baseball and 
basketball on the town teams for many years after his school years.Donald’s biggest pride and joy are his son Dean and daughter-in-law 
Christine. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Palmer E. and 
Caroline Deines; and sister Eleanor Swank.Donald is survived by his wife Helen; son Dean (Christine) Deines of

Kenneth L. Kerns

Larned – Marvin Duane Barker, 72, passed away May 22, 2021 at Diversicare of Larned.

He was born August 3, 1948 in Larned, the son of Fred H. and Norma L. Turpen Barker.

A lifetime area resident, he was of the Christian faith. He was a 1966 graduate of Larned High School and following graduation he attended North Central Kansas Area Vo-Tech at Beloit and later took classes at Barton County Community College and Dodge City Community College.&nbsp;

After graduating from NCKA Vo-Tech he went to work for Boyer, Hagadorn and Wright at Salina, doing drafting, surveying, and inspecting. He later moved back to Larned and worked at Larned State Hospital on the Fire Department. He worked at Larned Grain and Fertilizer as an assistant manager for a number of years. He had the opportunity to work in the oil field and worked for Skelly as a pipe liner. He later became district gauger for Getty and Texaco, for which he spent 22 ½ years. He also began a farming operation in tough economic times and made it work. In 2011 he quit farming and sold his equipment and invested in a liquor store which he and Brenda ran for a number of years.

He served in the United States Army Reserve from 1968 thru 1974 and became a drill sergeant, receiving the rank of Master Sergeant.

Duane was raised to a Master Mason on May 20, 1983 and has been a mason for 38 years, a Scottish Rite Mason for 37, and was a current member of the Walnut City Lodge #215 in Rush Center. He has been an ISIS Shriner for 36 years and Potentate of the ISIS temple, 2014. He is twice past master. He is a member of the Sunflower, Russell, and Fort Hays Shrine Club. He was past president of the Fort Hays Shrine Club, two-time past president of Sunflower Shrine Club, past treasurer of the Sunflower Shrine Club, past president of the ISIS Grid Iron Club, and was also a member of Topless Travelers, and ROJ.

Duane spent 20+ years as a volunteer for Larned EMS and Larned Fire Rescue. He became Rescue Squad leader and Captain on the fire department.

On March 9th, 1994 he married Brenda Fairchild at Larned; she survives.

Other survivors include: his mother, Norma Barker, Larned; three sons, James Barker, Kanapolis, Gary (Brandi) Nash Jr, Salina, and Michael Nash, Wassila, Alaska; three daughters, Melissa Barker, Great Bend, Sara Barker Lewis, Great Bend, Michelle (Joe) Koch, Larned; a brother, Robert Barker, Larned; a sister, Diana L. Selfridge, Hanston; fifteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Fred H. Barker.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, with Pastors David Spare and Tonya Andrews presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at Beckwith Mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery with Masonic and Military Graveside Rites.

Marvin Duane Barker

Barbara 'Sue' Campbell, 83, passed away on November 16th, 2020. Her death was due to complications from COVID-19, however, she was not alone and in the comfort of her Hoisington, KS home.&nbsp;

On November 3rd, 1937, Sue was born to Walter ‘Shelby’ Hawkins and Letha Mae (Fisher) Hawkins in Maud, OK. She was an alumna of Hoisington High School, class of 1955. She married a dashing young Marine, Orville Richard “Dick” Campbell (1934-2008), on May 3rd, 1959 in Hoisington, KS. They had three wonderful, strong, and stubborn children: Russ, Rana and Robert. Professionally, she was a business owner of “Le Shop” hair salon and went on to be a proud employee of ElderCare, Inc. in Great Bend, KS where she retired after 18 years. Sue was an active member at the First United Methodist Church and was involved with American Legion Auxiliary, Post #286. Sue volunteered with Boy Scout Troop #130, and was a leader of Explorer post #013.&nbsp;

Very few things were more important to her than God, family, and the people she surrounded herself with. She was firm and soft in all the ways a mother should be. She was a strong constant for all of the people who were a part of her beautiful life. She celebrated life in many “little” ways: ice cream and popcorn for dinner on Sundays, posting daily Bible verses, and tending to her flowers (real AND virtual). Sue was all but quiet in the kind of love and support she would give. She never forgot a birthday and strove to be there for important events. Sue found comfort in truth and never valued herself above others.&nbsp;

She is survived by one son, Robert Campbell; one daughter, Rana Campbell (Richard Lynn); a daughter-in-law, Holly Campbell-Heinze (Ron Heinze); four grandchildren: Shiree Houf (Donnie Houf), Shelby Lynn, Ian Lynn (Michelle Castillo), Courtney Campbell (Marcus Allen); and two great grandchildren, Arabell &amp; Emerson Houf. Sue was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Russell Campbell; her brother, Bill Hawkins; and devoted dog, Jack.

Memorial service will 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at First United Methodist Church, Hoisington, with Pastors Chris Lehew and Seong Lee presiding. Followed by inurnment in Hoisington Cemetery.&nbsp;

Libuse N. “Libby” Serpan, 88, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed.

Libby was born January 22, 1933, in the Czechoslovakian Republic.&nbsp; She was a resident of Rush County, Kansas, since 1969.&nbsp; She was a homemaker. &nbsp;

On December 30, 1969, she married Erwin O. Serpan at Pawnee County, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death July 12, 2017.

Survivors include:&nbsp; one nephew, Steven Serpan, Timken, Kansas; and three nieces, Debra Duntz, Raymond, Kansas, Kay Winford, Lyons, Kansas, and Dona Strubhar, Lyons, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her husband; brother and sister in law, Milton and Wilma Serpan; and one niece, Carol Grothe.

The family has chosen cremation.&nbsp; A private family service will be held at a later date.
