Boxes of Love will be delivered to seniors who receive Meals on Wheels or ElderCare Home Services. Spaugh Zoo has been completed. The zoo look books are officially available for
sale at the zoo located along Main Street. 

Great Bend Convention and Visitors
Bureau Director Christina Hayes said the hard-cover books will be available for
$20.


"It's a marketing piece for the zoo and Great Bend," said Hayes. "As it goes through the history of the zoo, I feel like it turned out really great. I love the pictures and the history."

Kansas Tourism, under the Department of Commerce, awarded Great Bend a $3,468 grant to assist with the look books. The CVB will also use the books in giveaways and promotions as needed.

All area college and high-school-age dancers are invited to Barton Community College's Spring Dance Clinic on Sunday, Feb. 23.  Barton Dance Coach Sabrina Talbot said the special guest this year is former Cougar dance and cheer member Anthony Brown, who is now a member of the Dallas Cowboys Rhythm and Blues Coed Hip Hop team.

"In 2007, he attended Barton on both their cheer and dance teams and competed nationally," Talbot said. "Then he attended the prestigious Navarro Junior College, which is famously known for its Netflix documentary. Then he auditioned for "So You Think You Can Dance" seasons 8, 9, 10, and 11, advancing to Vegas each time."

Brown won two national titles at Navarro, then continued his education at Texas Tech University where he earned a degree in dance and further refined his skills. He's now ready to share his skills in the half-day clinic at Barton.

"It will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with an hour lunch break in between, so they'll need to pack their lunch or plan some sort of transportation to go get lunch for an hour," said Talbot. "Registration starts at 9:30."

NFL coed hip-hop dancer Brown coming to Great Bend for dance clinic

Since last April, Great Bend citizen Daniel Frost has attended a handful
of Great Bend City Council meetings to voice his frustration with noise
complaints and unruly residents in the southeast section of town. Frost and two
other property owners in this part of town spoke at Monday’s meeting to see if
law enforcement could take more action against the claims of loud music, reckless
driving and other nuisances.

owners crank the music back up the moment the patrol officer leaves.


"Can't we say that after an officer comes there two times in a night, they can issue citations?" asked Love. "Maybe if they had to reach in their pocket and pay money to aggravate the people, they might quit doing it."

Following Frost’s complaint last April, Great Bend Police Department officers
went to the section of town in question, including a detective in an unmarked vehicle.
At that time, Police Chief Steve Haulmark said officers did not see any more
violations than they would normally anywhere else in town. 


"We have regular overtime now just to cover our basic shifts," said Haulmark. "We do have a signup sheet for a two-man car to work saturation patrol on Saturday nights. We're still doing it but we're not able to do it as much as we were. I'd be happy to look into numbers of citations versus warnings given."

After three citizens spoke Monday with concerns about the area, councilmembers
asked Haulmark if the city should look into more citations and less warnings
for complaints.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

"In response to 'the police are never there or never do anything,' I would say without specifics that is just throwing eggs," added Haulmark.

I. OPENING BUSINESS: &nbsp; &nbsp;A. Call Meeting to Order. &nbsp; &nbsp;B. Recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. &nbsp; &nbsp;C. Consider Approval of the Agenda. &nbsp; &nbsp;D. Consider the minutes of the January 28, 2025, Regular Meeting. &nbsp; &nbsp;E. Any citizen wishing to make statements during the discussion of any item must first be recognized by the Commission Chair. The Kansas Association of Counties and the League of Kansas Municipalities co-hosted Local Government Day last week. An overview will be provided. This item was tabled on January 28, 2025, due to illness.

III. NEW BUSINESS - All new business to be considered by the Commission will be heard at this time.

&nbsp; &nbsp;A. COUNTY CLERK’S OFFICE: Lease of Postage Machine Equipment: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Bev Schmeidler, County Clerk, will provide details. The lease for the current postage machine ends in March, 2025. The County Clerk’s Office contacted Midwest Single Source and Pitney Bowes for quotes. After a review, it is suggested that the County continue the lease with Midwest Single Source. That lease price is $435.07 per month and monies are included in the Courthouse General account of the General Fund for this anticipated purchase.

&nbsp; &nbsp;B. INVENTORY OF COUNTY PROPERTY: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Ms. Schmeidler; Chris Saenz, Equipment Technician; and Dereck Hollingshead, Information Technology Director, will provide details. Per KSA 19-2687, each County officer and head of a department shall make an inventory of the personal property owned by the County and located in such office or department.&nbsp;The inventory, which shall be taken during the month of December of each year, shall be filed with the County Clerk on or before December 31 of each year. The inventory shall not include books, records, files, stationery, writing materials and blank legal papers. The information will be presented to the Commission during February of each year. Per Resolution 2005-22, the mandated duties have been assigned to the Information Technology Department.&nbsp; &nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp;C. EXECUTIVE SESSION: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Chairman Tricia Schlessiger will present. Any Commissioner may make a motion for the board to recess to executive session at this time as allowed by K.S.A. 75-4319. Any motion must contain the justification for the executive session, the subject matter to be discussed, any individuals in addition to the board who will attend the executive session and the time at which the regular session shall resume.

IV. ENDING BUSINESS – After new items are heard by the Commission, the following items, including announcements, will be heard.

&nbsp; &nbsp;A. ANNOUNCEMENTS: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Following the close of the Agenda Meeting, the Commission will consider the authorization of personnel changes for classified positions, sign any documentation approved during the agenda meeting or sign any other documentation required for regular County business. Similar action may take place throughout the day.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -County officials are invited to attend the Township Meeting. The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 723 Main, Great Bend, Kansas.

Barton County Commission meeting agenda (2/4)

On Friday, Jan. 31 at approximately 1:15 p.m. an officer with the Great Bend Police Department observed a 2001 Chevy Tahoe commit a traffic infraction in the 2200 block of 12th Street. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop; however, the driver refused to yield and accelerated away from the officer. 

 The vehicle was able to elude law enforcement at the time and leave the city limits, but with the use of the FLOCK camera system the vehicle and license plate were identified. 

 Officers conducted a follow up investigation and on Friday, Jan. 31 at approximately 4:30 p.m. Officers located the vehicle unoccupied in the 300 block of Pine Street.  Officers located a subject walking in the area of the vehicle who they identified at Vince Dandy, age 23.  It was determined that the vehicle belonged to him, and after questioning, Dandy admitted to being the driver of the vehicle and to fleeing from officers. 

Dandy was transported to the Barton County Jail and booked on charges of felony flee and elude, in lieu of bond. This case is still under investigation.

Great Bend PD use camera system to catch fleeing subject

The new physician at Heart of Kansas Family Health Care in Larned offers the entire gamut of family-medicine services, while focusing on functional medicine to treat the whole person.

Good content at a good price. Each year, the Kansas Wetlands Education Center provides hundreds of free educational programs in-house and across the region. Despite dry conditions at Cheyenne Bottoms, KWEC Director Curtis Wolf said the impact of the Center has not changed much in recent years, and 2024 was another big year.

"Overall, the total contacts we've had was more than 23,000 people we had contact with through the Center with drop-in visitors, outreach programs, onsite programs, and people we talk to at trade shows or festivals," he said.

KWEC saw 5,495 drop-in visitors in 2024 and featured 313 on-site programs and 439 outreach programs.

"The programming is still what I'm so proud of," Wolf said. "Mandy Kern is our educator and she just goes above and beyond for the number of programs she's offering with school groups, rec commissions, and even senior living homes. There are just so many different programs she does."

Already in January, Kern has headed 72 programs with more than 2,500 participants.

Nearly 5,500 people stopped at Kansas Wetlands Education Center in 2024

Have you heard of the Blue Zones? If you are familiar with these five places on Earth, you may know the secrets of the longest-lived people on the planet. Although these populations tend to live well into their 100’s, the amazing part of their aging process is not the number of years they live but the quality of life they maintain. In fact, most of these people are still active well into their 90’s. So, what is their secret?

The Power 9 Rule, coined by Dan Buettner, describes the common traits of Blue Zone practices that empower people of these regions to live long, healthy lives.

Move naturally. Contradictory to modern exercise and diet culture, people within the Blue Zones don’t go to the gym, run marathons, or do CrossFit. Their everyday lifestyles avoid mechanical conveniences that nudge them into moving naturally throughout the day. Walking is the basis of their active lifestyles. Walking to the store, a friend’s house, or work is the norm. People garden and do physical labor on a daily basis.

The key here is that regular, low- moderate intensity activity is achieved daily. This keeps their cardiovascular systems strong while strengthening muscles without overusing joints, tendons, and ligaments.

Know your purpose. People in Blue Zones have a purpose for their lives. Every task completed throughout the day is done mindfully and with intention. Okinawans call this sense of purpose “ikigai” and Nicoyans name it “plan de Vida.” Both translate to “why I wake up in the morning.” Knowing your sense of purpose is worth up to seven years of life expectancy.

Downshift. Stress is a major contributor to disease. It is directly linked to chronic inflammation that is associated with every major age-related disease. People of the Blue Zones have stress relief practices naturally built into their day. Adventists pray, Sardinians do a happy hour, and Greeks take an afternoon nap.

The 80% Rule. This Power 9 practice is directly related to healthy weight management. “Hara hachi bu” is the mantra said before meals to remind Okinawans to stop eating when they are 80% full. The science behind this indicates that it takes about 20 minutes for the brain to realize that the stomach is full. This small gap could be the difference between gaining or losing weight.

Plant Slant. Most of us know that the food we consume is the foundation of well-being. This is one reason why people of the Blue Zones maintain health so effortlessly. What they consume is plant-based, unprocessed, and grown naturally. Common foods include an array of vegetables and omega-3-rich nuts. Beans are their main protein source along with moderate amounts of fatty fish. On the other hand, meat is a celebratory food that is eaten about five times per month.

Wine at Five. You may be surprised that a ritual happy hour is part of Power 9. As a regular part of their day, Sardinians drink red Cannanou wine which is exceptionally high in polyphenols while visiting with loved ones. It is important to note the health benefits of this particular drink and the socialization aspect of this practice. This may be more influential to well-being than the alcohol itself.

Belong. In all of the Blue Zones, people identify with some sort of faith-based community. While Denomination doesn’t seem to matter, research shows that attending faith-based services once per week will add 4-14 years of life expectancy.

Loved Ones First. Being around family and close friends is incredibly important. Not only because of the socialization aspect, but because these close connections build relationships that foster trust, support, and stability.

Right Tribe. As the saying goes, “You become who you surround yourself with” is proven to be true. Studies show that smoking, obesity, happiness, and even loneliness are contagious. In Japan, the Okinawans have “moais” – groups of five friends who are committed to each other for life. People of the Blue Zones have favorable social networks that support healthy behaviors, and this creates an environment of healthy living.

So, there you have it; the nine powerful practices from the world's healthiest people. If you’re anything like me, you are fascinated by the research, but you are also puzzled by the reality of practicing the Power 9 in your own daily life. Dan Buettner explains, “The secret to longevity, as I see it, has less to do with diet, or even exercise, and more to do with the environment in which a person lives: social and physical. What do I mean by this? They live rewardingly inconvenient lives.”

On the other hand, meat is a celebratory food that is eaten about five times per month.Wine at Five. You may be surprised that a ritual happy hour is part of Power 9. As a regular part of their day, Sardinians drink red Cannanou wine which is exceptionally high in polyphenols while visiting with loved ones. It is important to note the health benefits of this particular drink and the socialization aspect of this practice. This may be more influential to well-being than the alcohol itself.Belong. In all of the Blue Zones, people identify with some sort of faith-based community. While Denomination doesn’t seem to matter, research shows that attending faith-based services once per week will add 4-14 years of life expectancy.Loved Ones First. Being around family and close friends is incredibly important. Not only because of the socialization aspect, but because these close connections build relationships that foster trust, support, and stability.Right Tribe. As the saying goes, “You become who you surround yourself with” is proven to be true. Studies show that smoking, obesity, happiness, and even loneliness are contagious. In Japan, the Okinawans have “moais” – groups of five friends who are committed to each other for life. People of the Blue Zones have favorable social networks that support healthy behaviors, and this creates an environment of healthy living.So, there you have it; the nine powerful practices from the world's healthiest people. Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (1/31 - 2/2)

Business owners are tasked with an obvious yet constant task…making sure
potential customers know where their company is located. In an effort to help
retail businesses, the Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau will create a
new shopping guide map. 

CVB Director Christina Hayes said the current map in
the visitor’s guide needs to be updated, and the new map will be animated to
showcase the shopping districts and the entire town of Great Bend.


"I feel like this will be a fun, new way to showcase Great Bend," said Hayes. "It'll be shopping, and we'll focus on certain areas on one side of this big foldout map. The other side will be the big map which will also have hotels marked and points of interests, like our zoo and waterpark."

The Great Bend CVB hired Lindsey Kernodle, a freelance
illustrator, to illustrate a map of Great Bend that highlights shopping
locations and areas of interest for visitors. Kernodle used to work as a
graphic artist at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita. She will be making a visit
to Great Bend this month.


Hayes was hopeful to have the illustrated map finished by the end of the year
to have available for visitors.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend creating new illustrated map to showcase points of interest

Leadership comes in all shapes and sizes. Lincoln Elementary School in Great Bend already has a student council for its older students but that left out some of the younger grades. During Wednesday's USD 428 Board of Education luncheon at the school, Student and Family Advocate Jose Arias introduced several student ambassadors to the board.

"It's all about elevating our leadership as much as we can within our student body," Arias said. "We thought a good way to do that and give them the power to empower other students and the staff is nominating them as student ambassadors in the classroom on a weekly basis."

Students are nominated each Monday. The goal is that every student will have a turn at being an ambassador but the position must still be earned. All grades, K-6, have an ambassador. Fifth-grader Brady Karlin and Jaylan Brown, a newcomer to the sixth grade this year, explained what it takes to be an ambassador.

"Something you have to do to be an ambassador is be kind, respectful, responsible, and safe," Karlin said.

"I help with small errands around the classroom," Brown said. "I feel like to be a student ambassador, you must be a leader."

Kloie Schmidtberger added ambassadors must be patient. Mack Elsen said ambassadors should encourage classmates to do their best, and Jasper Ryff said being an ambassador is all about being respectful and behaving.

Rosewood Services caretakers Judy Shelton, with 25 years, along with her husband Ken, with 15 years of service, represent the longest-tenured Rosewood employees who were recognized. Achieving 10-year milestones were employees Dan Haselhorst, transportation; Amy Kilwein, benefits specialist; and Tandy Webb, equine therapy riding instructor. Recognized with 5-year awards were April Burhenn, residential; Michael Dawes, public relations director; Victor Jacobs, maintenance manager; Traci Maris, case manager; and Lakota Werner, residential.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We’re always happy to recognize our employees who have shown a commitment over a long period of time to providing care and supports to our folks we serve with developmental disabilities,” said Rosewood CEO Tammy Hammond. “Employee retention speaks to the health and success of our organization.
