New text scam alert: Don't fall for fake KDOT traffic ticket demands

The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, June 17th shows continued improvement for the state with an increase from 58 to almost 65% of the state totally out of dry conditions. Essentially, the southern two thirds of Kansas is almost totally out of dry conditions. The only parts of the state with some moderate and a bit of severe drought are along the Nebraska border. Barton County is totally out of moderate drought with the southern three quarters just abnormally dry. Keep in mind this rating doesn’t include all the recent rain. The six-to ten-day outlook (June 24 to 28) indicates a 33 to 50% chance of leaning above normal for temperatures and a 33 to 50% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (June 26 to July 2) indicates a 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for temperatures and precipitation. The extreme heat this weekend will help wheat harvest proceed. This heat isn’t great for summer crops. The extended outlook isn’t bad, especially for the early planted corn which is proceeding nicely.

No one is complaining about the recent precipitation, even as it slows down wheat harvest, baling forages, or planting summer crops. After almost five years of drought, producers are facing the challenge of weed control for fallow and cropped fields. Area extension agents are good at sharing information on weed control coming out of Manhattan. Today, instead of specific information regarding specific weeds and herbicides, we will consider weed control in more ecological terms.

· First, before addressing the ecological aspects of weed control, in general terms, the best weed control is to start with a weed free field. Then, plant at the highest practical seeding rate and for crops like soybeans grain sorghum with adequate soil moisture, and forage crops, narrow rows. The best weed control is an actively growing crop that can establish canopy closure as quickly as possible. So, producers must provide a soil environment as free of stress, from soil fertility and structure to diseases and other pest pressures.

· It’s not that herbicides or tillage should not be used but used judiciously to protect the environment. And minimizing tillage to preserve soil structure, organic matter and keep the soil as covered as possible.

· Why is the first bullet point the key? Examine an undisturbed field, say native pasture. You won’t see much, if any, bare ground. You will typically see a variety of grasses and forbs. The life cycles vary in terms of flowering and seed germination. That allows for a stable, resilient ecosystem. That isn’t what we want/need for modern crop production. We need uniform germination with a single species ready for harvest at the same time. It isn’t a “natural,” stable ecosystem. This isn’t “bad” but nature resists it.

· Nature tends to be the most stable ecosystem that is easy to maintain spatially and temporally. Nature wants a system that is easy to maintain, taking the least amount of energy. It wants to fill in the blank spots and with a variety of species. It may look like a mess but it’s the most stable, natural environment. That’s why we must constantly add “energy” through management to maintain that order.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

The water recreation season in Kansas officially runs from April 1 to Oct. 31, as do the Harmful Algae Blooms (HAB) response program's active operations. Kansans should remain vigilant while engaging in activities taking place in or on the water, such as swimming, boating, and fishing.

A HAB may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g., direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache.

Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission to Meet June 26 in Russell

The Great Bend Public Library requested a $20,000 increase in their 2026
budget request from the City of Great Bend. After last Monday’s work session,
the Great Bend City Council found a way to keep the library’s budget the same
but save them $10,000.


City Clerk Shawna Schafer said the library has been paying for their audits
recently, costing them approximately $10,000 per year.


"We took them off because one year the library didn't get all of their stuff," said Schafer. "Our audit was delayed until August. Since then, they have had three clean audits. The library was wanting to hop back on our audits. I asked our auditor, Sean Gordon, what his thoughts were. He said he would do the audit combined or separate from us."

The library asked for $670,000 in the 2026 budget, but the City Council was in
favor of leaving their funding the same at $650,000 and combining the library’s
audit with the city’s annual audit.


Because of a unique state grant, the library’s city funding cannot go down. 


"The reason why is because the library qualifies for a state library grant," said Schafer. "For whatever reason, the statute is we have to levy the same amount of tax dollars as the prior year or more. It can't ever go down."

A budget work session is scheduled for July 14 as city administration
and the council continue to work on the budget.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend finds a way to reduce library’s expenses

The best trade relationships start in the cab of a combine during the Kansas wheat harvest, at least according to a team of South American millers who stopped by the field as part of a jam-packed trade team mission to Kansas on June 13.&nbsp;

“The members of this team are ambassadors from their countries, representing their respective milling associations,” said Claudia Gómez, regional marketing manager for U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) in Santiago, Chile, who led the team. “This trip gives them information about how U.S. wheat farmers are working hard to produce the best wheat in the world.”

The trade team members represented milling organizations from Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador. Together, they represent companies that purchase about 90 percent of the U.S. wheat sold to South America. In 2024, shifting wheat production patterns and rising consumption across the region created new opportunities for exporters. U.S. exporters capitalized on these trends, expanding the U.S. footprint in these key markets through competitive pricing, reliable supply, favorable trade conditions and the range of available wheat classes.&nbsp;

This summer’s trade team brings representatives of these buyers to the United States to gain additional insights into the U.S. wheat market that they will take home to the millers they represent.&nbsp;

After touring wheat production and grain facilities in Washington and Ohio, the team traveled to Wichita. E.G. Herl, vice-president of grain and logistics for Grain Craft, gave the team an outlook on the U.S. wheat market, information that association members will use as they make purchasing decisions. The team also visited the Viterra terminal grain elevator in Wichita, offering a close-up view of the logistics and efficiency of the U.S. grain supply chain.&nbsp;

“We are here to solve the challenges they are facing, like combined cargoes for small mills, and to work together to create logistic synergies to increase business,” Gomez said. “Our job is to connect buyers with the best ways to buy and use U.S. wheat. Milling associations, like the ones this team represents, help USW get information out to more millers more efficiently.”

The most impactful stop, however, was in the harvest fields of Martin Kerschen in Sedgwick County. Team participants emphasized appreciation for the integrity of U.S. farmers like Kerschen, who opened their homes and fields to international visitors. After taking a few passes across the field in the cab of Kerschen’s combine with his son Justin, they expressed a desire to expand that sense of community to trade relationships.&nbsp;

“The team really appreciated the values and hospitality of farmers and enjoyed living the experience of farming as a family business and appreciated their dedication to quality and consistency,” Gomez said. “Riding in the combine with Martin and his family was their favorite part of the trip to Kansas.”

As the Great Bend City Council hashed out budget requests at Monday’s work
session, a common feeling was the working relationship with the Golden Belt
Humane Society needs to get better. Along with adoptions, the City of Great
Bend relies on the Humane Society to handle animal control. 

Police Chief Steve
Haulmark told the council there have been more incidents lately of animal control not
responding to calls.


"The young lady who's their handler right now that goes out was a kennel tech," said Haulmark. "I think they're having a hard time finding people to work there. That's part of the problem. Money is part of the problem, maybe, but like everybody else they're short-staffed. That might be part of the reason why services have been cut. I don't know."

New director at the Humane Society, Emil Halfhill, went before the City Council
earlier this month asking for a $14,500 increase in the shelter’s 2026 budget
after receiving $110,500 this year.


City Attorney Allen Glendenning told Mayor Cody Schmidt that the most recent
contract he found read that after business hours, animal control will respond to
“injured animals, detained strays, bite cases and dead animals as feasible and
practical.”


"If you were in that position as a director, you're at the top and you're short-staffed and somebody calls...as a director you should go put on your pants and go answer the call," said Schmidt. "Everybody is short-staffed in today's world. That's not a good enough excuse for me to not do your job."

With the Humane Society asking for $125,000 in the 2026 budget, the city
council suggested $117,000.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Wheatland Electric Cooperative, Inc. (WEC) announced today that the Barton County Fair has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the WEC Sharing Success Fund to help fund the purchase of a new refrigerator for the fair’s food stand, replacing an inoperative unit.

Held annually since 1899, the Barton County Fair is a long-standing tradition that celebrates the region’s agricultural roots and strong community spirit. The fair showcases an exciting array of events, including 4-H competitions, livestock shows, exhibits, live entertainment, and carnival rides, drawing visitors of all ages for a week of fun and connection.

Beyond the festivities, the fair plays a vital role in youth development by providing a platform for young people to showcase their skills, responsibility, and hard work through hands-on learning and friendly competition. It fosters leadership, confidence, and a strong sense of accomplishment—values that carry far beyond the show ring.

The new refrigerator will help ensure that perishable food items and essential supplies can be safely stored on-site, enhancing both convenience and food safety during the fair and other events. This replacement helps support the dedicated volunteers and vendors who help make the fair a success and ensures a positive experience for all who attend.

The Scott Community Foundation began formally accepting applications for grants from the WEC Sharing Success Fund from community-based organizations on December 1, 2012. Since then, the application process has been moved internally and is currently handled directly by WEC. This year, WEC and CoBank have each contributed $15,000 to the fund. The program will continue to run until the funds are exhausted. Since 2012, WEC’s Sharing Success Fund has made $195,000 available to community-based organizations and projects across their service territory.

Barton Co. Fair receives $1,000 Sharing Success grant from Wheatland

Runners, walkers, and families are lacing up their sneakers for the annual After Harvest Festival 5K Family Fun Run &amp; Walk, scheduled for Friday, July 18 in downtown Ellinwood.

Hosted by the Ellinwood Hospital Foundation, the event kicks off with check-in and late registration at 6 p.m. at the southeast corner of 2nd &amp; Main Street. The race begins at 7 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony at 8 p.m. on 1st Street.

The 5K has become a beloved After Harvest Festival tradition, offering a family-friendly route through Ellinwood—including a scenic pass by the new Ellinwood Hospital.

“This event is more than just a run—it’s a way to support local healthcare,” said Kristy Rupe, Foundation Director. “Every dollar raised through the 5K stays right here in Ellinwood. It goes directly toward funding new equipment, expanding services, and ensuring our hospital continues to provide high-quality care to our community.”

Early registration is open through June 20 for $30. After that, the cost increases to $35, with day-of registration available for $40. Participants must register by June 20 to guarantee a race t-shirt.

Patrick Crowdis is down to his final two weeks serving as the
superintendent of the Hoisington school district. This past spring, Crowdis
announced his resignation which will go into place June 30. He
spent time at June’s USD 431 Board of Education meeting thanking the board.


"I appreciate the support that I have received from the community," said Crowdis. "I just appreciate everything that has been accomplished over the last five years. You're an excellent board."

Crowdis served the district for five years, starting in July 2020. He resigned
to pursue an opportunity to return to Dodge City Public Schools, where he
served as an assistant principal at Dodge City High School before moving to
Hoisington. Crowdis was named the Associate Superintendent of Business and
Operations for USD 443 in Dodge City.


"I continue to tell people, hands down, I believe our administrative staff is as good as anybody out there," said Crowdis. "Those are the people I worked with directly. We have an excellent teaching staff. It's a great community. I appreciate the support that I was given. Thank you very much."

Trenton Horn was named the next superintendent for the Hoisington school
district. Horn has spent the previous six years in Johnson City as the
superintendent for USD 452 Stanton County Schools. Horn begins in Hoisington
July 1.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Crowdis thanks community for time as Hoisington school superintendent 

This is day 2 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Harvest was off to a rapid start in southwest Kansas on Thursday with temperatures topping out about 100 degrees. There will be more information available on how yields and quality will compare to average by the beginning of next week when reports start to come in.

In central Kansas, harvest came to a halt after Tuesday’s rainfall but will pick back up by the weekend with high winds and nearly triple digit temperatures in the forecast.

Derek Sawyer who farms in McPherson County reports that before Tuesday’s rain they were cutting wheat that was yielding 80 bushels per acre. But Tuesday brought the area 5 to 6 inches of rain, up to 10 inches in some places, and 80 mile per hour sustained winds. This took kernels out of the heads in many wheat fields. He estimates that they probably lost 25% of the yield potential. Test weights were good, but will no doubt decrease with the rain. Some fields are in standing water and may not be able to be harvested. While he should be over halfway done with harvest, Sawyer reports that he barely even got started, and won’t be able to get into even the fields with the least amount of rainfall until the weekend at the earliest. The creek is out of its banks and roads are flooded in the area.

Lee Scheufler who farms in Rice and Ellsworth counties reports that harvest began on June 10 and that yields were average up to 20 percent above average. They’ve had a couple rain delays, including Tuesday’s rainfall which ranged from 1.75 to 4 inches in the area, with localized flooding. He was able to find dry ground on Thursday and get back to harvest before the weekend. After the rains, test weight has decreased slightly but is still around average. He is only about 15 to 20 percent of the way done with harvest and has at least a week left.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>This is day 2 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.Harvest was off to a rapid start in southwest Kansas on Thursday with temperatures topping out about 100 degrees. There will be more information available on how yields and quality will compare to average by the beginning of next week when reports start to come in.In central Kansas, harvest came to a halt after Tuesday’s rainfall but will pick back up by the weekend with high winds and nearly triple digit temperatures in the forecast.Derek Sawyer who farms in McPherson County reports that before Tuesday’s rain they were cutting wheat that was yielding 80 bushels per acre. But Tuesday brought the area 5 to 6 inches of rain, up to 10 inches in some places, and 80 mile per hour sustained winds. This took kernels out of the heads in many wheat fields. He estimates that they probably lost 25% of the yield potential. Test weights were good, but will no doubt decrease with the rain. Some fields are in standing water and may not be able to be harvested. While he should be over halfway done with harvest, Sawyer reports that he barely even got started, and won’t be able to get into even the fields with the least amount of rainfall until the weekend at the earliest. The creek is out of its banks and roads are flooded in the area.Lee Scheufler who farms in Rice and Ellsworth counties reports that harvest began on June 10 and that yields were average up to 20 percent above average. They’ve had a couple rain delays, including Tuesday’s rainfall which ranged from 1.75 to 4 inches in the area, with localized flooding. He was able to find dry ground on Thursday and get back to harvest before the weekend. After the rains, test weight has decreased slightly but is still around average. Day 2, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

The biggest jump in outside agency requests this year for the City of
Great Bend’s 2026 budget came from Great Bend Economic Development, asking for an
additional $125,000.


The City and Barton County previously funded GBED $500,000, each entity
allocating $250,000. At the beginning of the year, Barton County removed their
direct allocation and moved to project-based funding.


At Monday’s work session, Great Bend Mayor Cody Schmidt said the city funds
Economic Development to know what is going on with the organization.


"Economic Development is funded by the City of Great Bend so the council and mayor can have a say in what they do," said Schmidt. "If the council and mayor don't want to have a say, then quit funding them. But if you want to continue to have Sara Arnberger (Director) in here, you want to sit down and meet with the board, know the insides and outsides of what they're doing to recruit people, you have to fund that organization."

City Administrator Logan Burns said funding Economic Development at their
requested $375,000 is not sustainable. If the council continued at that rate,
in seven years the economic development fund would be depleted, a fund that is
also used for business recruitment and incentives.


Councilman Cory Urban and the majority of the council were in favor of funding
Economic Development at the increased amount of $375,000, but most likely just
for this upcoming budget.


"We do this as a one year, given the situation from what their prior budgets were," said Urban. "They've cut a bunch from their prior budgets. I think this year we need to do it at this, but then it needs to be clearly stated that this is one-off deal. We need to look to return to the $250,000ish budget in the future."

The Great Bend City Council will conduct a budget work session on July 14 as
they continue to sort out the numbers.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
