Retired WNBA Basketball legend Jackie Stiles will speak at Barton Community College at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 29 in the Fine Arts Auditorium to commemorate the 50th&nbsp;Anniversary of Title IX. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. Barton Title IX Coordinator Cheryl Brown said celebrating the 50th Anniversary is an important milestone to acknowledge. “President Richard Nixon signed Title IX into law in 1972,” she said. “Early efforts to obtain equal access for women in education focused on athletics, but it also opened the doors for women in all the professions and every field beyond education.” Brown said Stiles is an exciting figure to help celebrate this landmark anniversary. “Jackie is a Barton County hometown hero who was asked to speak at Barton to inspire not only our students but all of us … not just in athletics, but in all of life’s endeavors,” she said. Stiles is one of the most renowned basketball players in the history of the women's game. From her roots in Claflin, she led the country in scoring. Then to Southwest Missouri State University, she rewrote the NCAA women's basketball record books en route to leading the Lady Bears to the 2001 Final Four. Finally, to a professional career in the WNBA, Jackie has inspired and impacted millions. In 2016, Stiles was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Temperatures in the 80s this week are foreshadowing cooler things to come. As the temperatures drop each summer, that means hunting season is just around the corner. Dove season opens statewide on Sept. 1, and Cheyenne Bottoms Area Wildlife Manager Jason Wagner said dry conditions could make for a successful hunt.

"I've seen more and more dove," he said. "I've seen a pretty good hatch of them. It's going to be pretty prime this year for western Kansas dove hunting if we don't get a cold front or a bunch of rain between now and Sept. 1. It looks really promising for at least dove season."

Teal season begins east of Highway 283, including the Bottoms, on Sept. 10 and runs through Sept. 25. The high plains season west of 283 will be a week shorter from Sept. 17-25. Given the ducks' proclivity for water, they might be a little harder to find this season.

"Teal season is normally the big one we like to talk about at the Bottoms, but it's going to be pretty tough," Wagner said. "You might have to bring your own water."

Deer season for the youth and disabled begins on Sept. 3, and the archery season runs from Sept. 12 through the end of 2022. Fall turkey season begins Oct. 1.

Wagner said hunting maps are available online but regulation books have not been printed yet due to some late decisions on regulations in August. He also said printed hunting licenses will still be available, but this year the licenses will be printed on standard paper and not the green specialized paper as in past years. Licenses may also be purchased through gooutdoorskansas.com.

"Get familiar with the GooutdoorsKansas app," Wagner said. "That's also the check-in and out system. If you were to hunt at Cheyenne Bottoms, or any of the public wildlife areas, you have to check in and out through the Kansas outdoors app. It's almost identical to what iSportsman was, it's just all together in an app."

The next step in beautifying Great Bend’s downtown entertainment district is
coming up Sept. 10 with a community paint day for the art
alley. 
The final Friday of the month, from spring to fall, a portion of Forest Avenue
is barricaded for live music, food and beverages. This year, the consumption
area was extended to the alleyway between Forest and Lakin Avenue. 
The Great Bend City Council gave approval to paint a mural along the ground of
the alley, to inspire more art throughout the community. 
Great Bend Economic Development Director Sara Hayden said the community paint day
will start at 8 a.m. with citizens able to register for painting shifts. "It will be like a 'paint by numbers' project," said Hayden. "When volunteers come, they'll be given a number, paint can and a paint brush. They will paint the numbers that coincide with that can and brush. They get to tell everybody that they helped with a community mural." 
Great Bend Alive, Inc., under the umbrella of Great Bend Economic Development,
had L&amp;M Contractors fill and patch potholes in the alley. The organization
is now looking for donations or sponsorships to raise $5,000 for painting
supplies. 
"We will need about 100 gallons of paint and a clear protective coat that goes over the top," said Hayden. "Doing a community paint day, we'll have to have a good amount of supplies to be able to keep everybody going throughout the day." 
The paint will be rated for cars to drive over it, but Hayden estimated the
alleyway paint will need to be refreshed after three or four years.

This spring the outdoor events took on the name “Final Fridays on Forest” and run from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Citizens are allowed to order alcoholic drinks, buy food, listen to music and enjoy entertainment while staying inside the consumption district.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Guest speaker coming to Great Bend church Saturday

For more than a decade, the Great Bend Farm, Ranch &amp; Hemp Expo called Great Bend its home. Now called the Kansas Ag Expo, one of the Midwest's premiere agricultural and ranching shows moves to the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson for 2023.

"Everything was good at Great Bend and has been good," said Star Expos President Chance Koetter. "We were just having a discussion, and the Kansas State Fairgrounds came up in a couple of different conversations with different vendors. We went and took a look and we thought, what better venue than the Kansas State Fairgrounds to promote Kansas agriculture and also have a great venue for the opportunity for another ag show."

The Kansas Ag Expo is shaping up to be one of the largest farm shows in the United States, with exhibitors from 27 states, Canada, Australia, and England. The expo will be centered around the Prairie Pavillion on the south side of the fairgrounds.

"It's roughly 92,000 square feet, concrete floors," Koetter said. "It's going to be really fun once we get that set up all under one roof for the indoor stuff. The rest of the bigger booths, like the tractors and combines and bigger equipment, will be outside, along with some other cattle equipment and various items as well."

The 2023 expo is scheduled for Thursday, March 30 through Saturday, April 1 in Hutchinson.

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (8/18)

The United Way of Central Kansas (UWCK) has created a new program called “Laundry
Love” which will launch Saturday, Aug. 20 in Great Bend to help those in need with
cleaning their clothes. 
Laundry Love will wash the clothes and bedding of low- and no-income families
and individuals. With no questions asked, anyone can stop by and receive up to
five loads of laundry done for free.

United Way Executive Director Charell Owings
said the event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Discount Laundry on
Jefferson Street, just behind the Subway restaurant. 
"They don't need to bring anything with them, except for their laundry," said Owings. "In case they have to bring their kids with them, we'll have some Dolly Parton Imagination Library books, coloring books and crayons. We'll also have snacks and water available for anyone that joins us."

On average, a load of laundry done in your house costs less than a dollar. At
a laundromat, it costs about $4.25 to do that same load. To help those
underserved, clean laundry can assist with health, children teasing because of a child’s
dirty clothes and the economic burden. 
Moeder Plumbing, Heating &amp; Air is sponsoring Saturday's event, but Owings
said United Way is looking for individuals or businesses to sponsor future
events. 
"We will be doing this monthly," said Owings. "We'll be looking for more sponsors. Even if people want to donate laundry supplies. We have enough to get us through a couple of events but we'll be collecting those donations as well." 
Each Laundry Love event will be on the third Saturday of the month from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

This new program was born from the collaboration that UWCK is a part of, Communities Organizing to Promote Equity (COPE). A fellow member of this group Vicki Richardson with Kansas Children’s Service League and Pilot Club had seen this program in action in Salina and had of goal of bringing this to Great Bend for more than two years.

The story of Laundry Love began with T-Bone, a gentleman living in Ventura, California. In one particular conversation, a question was asked of him: “T-Bone, how can we come alongside your life in a meaningful way?” His response was honest and practical. “If I had clean clothes, people would treat me like a human being.”

five loads of laundry done for free. United Way Executive Director Charell Owings
said the event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Discount Laundry on
Jefferson Street, just behind the Subway restaurant. 
"They don't need to bring anything with them, except for their laundry," said Owings. "In case they have to bring their kids with them, we'll have some Dolly Parton Imagination Library books, coloring books and crayons. We'll also have snacks and water available for anyone that joins us."<figure>

 </figure>On average, a load of laundry done in your house costs less than a dollar. At
a laundromat, it costs about $4.25 to do that same load. To help those
underserved, clean laundry can assist with health, children teasing because of a child’s
dirty clothes and the economic burden. 
Moeder Plumbing, Heating &amp; Air is sponsoring Saturday's event, but Owings
said United Way is looking for individuals or businesses to sponsor future
events. 
"We will be doing this monthly," said Owings. "We'll be looking for more sponsors. Even if people want to donate laundry supplies. We have enough to get us through a couple of events but we'll be collecting those donations as well." 
Each Laundry Love event will be on the third Saturday of the month from 10 a.m.

 </figure>This new program was born from the collaboration that UWCK is a part of, Communities Organizing to Promote Equity (COPE). A fellow member of this group Vicki Richardson with Kansas Children’s Service League and Pilot Club had seen this program in action in Salina and had of goal of bringing this to Great Bend for more than two years.The story of Laundry Love began with T-Bone, a gentleman living in Ventura, California. In one particular conversation, a question was asked of him: “T-Bone, how can we come alongside your life in a meaningful way?” His response was honest and practical. “If I had clean clothes, people would treat me like a human being.”

Russell Regional Hospital has announced the hiring of Chelsee Hoffman, R.N.,&nbsp;as the Main Street Manor Coordinator. Main Street Manor is&nbsp;a&nbsp;long-term care center at Russell Regional Hospital. Hoffman has worked at Russell Regional Hospital for two years, starting out on the acute floor and surgery nurse. Most recently, Hoffman served as the infection prevention and quality assurance nurse. 

A native of Hays, Hoffman has worked in long term care&nbsp;in the roles of CNA, CMA, and LPN. Graduating form NCKTC and Colby Community College, Hoffman has been a nurse for 10 years. She has two children and her husband is a police officer with the Russell Police Department.&nbsp;

“I&nbsp;hope&nbsp;to&nbsp;add to the already amazing Main&nbsp;Street Manor&nbsp;team.&nbsp; I am excited to bring my knowledge, experience,&nbsp;and abilities to the floor and to learn from others while I go," Hoffman said. Russell long-term care center names Hoffman as coordinator

Eagle Radio of Great Bend has been honored with 2022 Excellence in Broadcasting Awards by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters.&nbsp;

Phil Grossardt earned second place for DJ Personality Aircheck on KHOK.

Shannon Towns and Becca Tudor placed second in the Morning Show category for the "Shannon and Becca in the Morning" show on KHOK.

Grossardt and Towns won second place for their Miller Time Fried Chicken Special spot in the Commercial 60 Seconds or Less category.

Grossardt and Scott Donovan received Honorable Mention in the Special Program category for their Melissa Manchester Feature.

The Station Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting is an annual competition sponsored by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters.

Eagle Radio of Great Bend honored by Kansas Association of Broadcasters

For the past several years, the Russell City Council has made improving our roadways a priority. Most recently, the reconstruction of S. Fossil Street from Wichita to Dorrance Street, the mill and overlay of S. Fossil Street from Dorrance to the south city limits, and the reconstruction of N. Lincoln Street from Wichita Avenue to 10th Street, and the planned mill and overlay of W. Wichita.

Continuing the City's efforts to improve our roadways, the City Council authorized a traffic study to address safety issues related to the proximity of the intersections that connect S. Fossil Street to the frontage roads and to consider additional traffic generated from the area's growth. One of the recommendations from the study is to realign the access points from S. Fossil to the frontage road. City staff began to secure funding to begin implementing the traffic study recommendations.

The first project from the recommendation of the traffic study is to move the first access point intersection, in front of the 24/7 Travel Store, to the North to reduce congestion at the intersection and help preserve traffic flow and safety on S. Fossil Street. Edwards Avenue, on the East side of S. Fossil, will be extended to the East to provide a new public street connection from US-281 to 26 acres of newly annexed land for commercial development.

The project will begin on Monday, August 22, 2022. There will be times when for short times, the access points off S. Fossil Street will be closed. The City and general contractor will make efforts to minimize impacts on adjacent businesses. This project includes stormwater improvements and new water and sewer lines.

This $3.3 million project is being funded partly by $2 million in grant funds and is scheduled for completion by May 2023, weather permitting.

S. Fossil and Edward Ave. improvement project to begin in Russell

Not all trips to Florida are for vacation. In July, Barton County Health Department Health Educator Katelyn Sigler and Youth Crew member Jasmine Figueroa were among the 2,500 attendees at the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) training in Orlando, Fla. The pair shared their experience with Barton County Commissioners at Wednesday's meeting.

Sigler attended as the Central Kansas Partnership Coordinator that works with the cessation of tobacco, drugs, and alcohol, and as a sponsor for Youth Crew. Sigler said they heard from many of the field's top experts, including those behind the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) grant that makes the local programs possible.

"We had the opportunity to listen to the Office of National Drug Control Policy director, the CDC acting principal deputy director, and the DFC program administrator," she said.

Figueroa, who will be a sophomore at Great Bend High School this year, was selected to attend this year's training because she is one of the older Youth Crew members and has been with the program since its inception.

"Jasmine has a passion for improving her community, and her dedication to the group is a big reason why she was selected," Sigler said.

On day two of the four-day program, Figueroa met General Barrye Price, president and CEO of CADCA, who offered encouragement to Figueroa.

"He said don't worry about the backlash you're going to get," Sigler said. "He said keep working toward what you want to work toward. It was nice for her to hear that."

Figueroa prepared her own presentation for peers by creating a map of Great Bend, broken down by neighborhoods with hot spots for nicotine and alcohol use. In one of her seminars titled "Empowering Adults to Empower Youth," Sigler heard a similar presentation from a student in one of the largest school districts in the nation.

"There was this one student that made a map of his school district and how many tobacco vendors were close to his school district," Sigler told commissioners. "He did a visual of that, and it was crazy to see how many vaping dispensaries are around their school. That's kind of how they target kids is making it close for them to walk."

Figueroa attended another session where more than 100 students circled up. Those who have been bullied were asked to step forward.

"You realize how many people are with you in that struggle who are battling with being bullied in school," said Sigler. "It's to visually show that you are not alone and people are going through the same thing you are."

Throughout the seminar, the Barton County team learned about drug goggles, which are similar to drunk goggles, when teaching prevention to youth. Sticker Shock is a national campaign that uses stickers on alcohol products to remind adults of the consequences of supplying minors with alcohol. Figueroa learned that working together is the best way to find solutions.

"The biggest thing I learned was how the strategic prevention framework and community change only happens when you have cultural competence and civility," she said.

Figueroa's mother, Flor Sanchez, closed out Wednesday's meeting by thanking those who made the trip to Florida responsible, including Sigler, Marissa Woodmansee, Juvenile Services Director for the 20th Judicial District, and Health Director Karen Winkelman.

"I just wanted to give you a thank you," Sanchez said. "Sometimes we look at the bad stuff but we don't say 'thank you' to the good stuff you're doing."

Great Bend City Council member Alan Moeder said Monday night that he
will be voting against the approval of abatements until the City of Great Bend
takes care of their own overgrown vegetation. 
Moeder referenced weeds growing in front of the Great Bend Events Center, a
shed near Brit Spaugh Park and the ditches along north Main Street. 
Moeder approached the city last year, and stated it was not fair to citizens receiving
notices that their property is in violation, when the city does not take care of
their own properties. 
"We're telling our citizens if you don't clean it up we're going to nail you, but we don't clean up our stuff," said Moeder. "I shouldn't have to come do this. This should be on a schedule with the department heads to take care of our property." 
The overgrown vegetation ordinance states any grass that is nine inches or
higher is noncompliant. Last June, Moeder referred to the city’s property at
the southwest corner of the 24th and McKinley intersection that was
in violation.

"I feel like if I have to come do this again next year at this time, we need to find new department heads," said Moeder. "This all should be on a schedule." 
City Administrator Kendal Francis acknowledged Moeder’s concerns and told the
city council that an update on the concerns will be given at the next meeting.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend councilmember: ‘We can’t clean our own property’

Wednesday afternoon a Barton County jury convicted Shawn Phillip Rosenberg of one count of rape and one count of furnishing alcohol to a minor for illicit purposes. 

The jury trial lasted two and a half days and the jury deliberated for an hour before returning the verdict. 

Following the jury’s verdict, District Court Judge Carey Hipp informed Rosenberg of his duty to register as a sex offender. Sentencing in the matter will be scheduled for a later date.

The State of Kansas was represented by Assistant Barton County Attorneys Colin Reynolds and Rita Sunderland. The Defendant was represented by Ben Fisher.

In May, Rosenberg was sentenced to life in prison for sexually molesting a teenage girl in Reno County. Rosenberg, from South Hutchinson, also had convictions out of Saline County.

Staying open late for Great Bend’s ‘Moonlight Madness Sale’

On Wednesday, Aug. 17 at about 12:30 p.m., the Barton County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a collision at the intersection of NW 40 Avenue and Northwest 110 Road. This location is about ½ mile north of the Boyd elevator.

Upon arrival, deputies located a two-vehicle accident. Investigation at the scene indicates that a 1998 Buick Century, operated by Glenn Stricker, age 92 of Great Bend, was northbound on NW 40 Ave. 

A 2012 Dodge charger, operated by Colin Mater, age 15 of Olmitz, was eastbound on Northwest 110 Road. 

Evidence indicates the Mater vehicle failed to stop for a stop sign and struck the northbound Stricker vehicle. Both vehicles continued into the east ditch with the Stricker vehicle rolling 1 ½ times before coming to rest.

Glenn Stricker suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Barton County Coroner’s Office. Mater sustained minor injuries and was transported to Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington and was later released.

The roadway was closed for approximately 1 ½ hours while the accident was investigated. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Hoisington Fire and EMS units, Kansas Highway Patrol and the Kansas Department of Transportation. 

The accident remains under investigation.

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (8/17)

Some of the unsung heroes are the brave men and women climbing electrical poles to restore power to the masses after a storm. Hoisington artist Bruce Bitter of B&amp;B Metal Arts is paying tribute to those linemen with his "After the Storm" stainless steel installment, recently dedicated to Jim McVey at the new Wheatland Electric facility on east 10th Street in Great Bend.

The Board of Wheatland Electric dedicated the artwork to McVey in recognition of his efforts in managing the design and construction of the new facility. Jim's wife, Dana, reached out to Bitter for the project. Bitter answered by poring over photographs of linemen and speaking with supervisors to get every detail accurate.

"If you look, it's got the safety glasses, the current safety straps, the right tools," Bitter said. "Everything is up to date with what a Wheatland lineman would use. It was also based off their brand new poles they are currently using with the fiberglass tops and the bolt patterns." 

The full depiction spans 30 feet and includes three power poles with two linemen working. Bitter worked on the project from August to October, perfecting many of the fine details and colors.

"The coloring is what I can get out of the stainless steel," he said. "It's more of an art than a science. You can't reproduce it, you have to know what you're doing. You take the heat like a paintbrush over the steel to create all the different colors."

Much like his previous 9/11 memorial that included steel from an actual World Trade Center building, "After the Storm" also incorporates various elements to heighten the work's authenticity.

"It actually has copper staples in there," Bitter said. "It has a copper ground wire ground down it. I simulated the wood on the telephone poles, I used the correct insulators, and how they tied the straps and electrical lines. Everything was correctly proportioned."

Since opening B&amp;B Metal Arts with his brother, Brent, in 1995, Bruce has remained busy. Some of his larger projects include the 9/11 Memorial and a Steve Fossett memorial at Salina Regional Airport. Closer to home, Bruce recently completed an installment for the Barton Community College Fine Arts Building. He created the signs for Dry Lake Brewing and P&amp;S Security, and the hospital benches for Clara Barton Hospital. In 2013, his life-sized baseball and softball players were commissioned for the entrance of the Great Bend Sports Complex.

"After the Storm" will be on display at Wheatland's open house on Thursday, Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The new facility is located at 200 10th Street in Great Bend.
