The wise and illustrious founding father Benjamin Franklin penned the quote, “Energy and persistence conquer all things.” Organizers of Rosewood Rodeo are getting ready to put those words to the test, in preparation for the annual therapeutic Rodeo. After a two-year hiatus, Rosewood Rodeo will take place Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Great Bend Expo III Arena, located at Barton County Fairground, two miles west on 10th and Patton Road.

“The hiatus and set-backs only make us even more determined to host our 18th Annual Rosewood Rodeo this fall,” said Tammy Hammond, Executive Director of Rosewood Services. “Our therapy riders, staff and families are ready to move forward and keep our proud history going. Our Rodeo’s longevity speaks to the success of our horse therapy program and to the commitment of the program by our therapy staff, our riders, their families and our event volunteers. I am proud to say that the Rosewood Rodeo is back in a big way!”

The annual rodeo is one of the most important days of the year for equine-therapy riders from Rosewood Services who practice their riding skills at Rosewood Ranch on a weekly basis throughout the year. The ranch is a full-working horse ranch near Pawnee Rock where people with developmental disabilities learn to ride and care for approximately 75 horses.

Throughout the Rosewood Rodeo, families can experience children’s activities and games, and face painting. If weather permits, horse-drawn wagon rides around the fairground will also be available. It’s a come-and-go event for spectators, so people can choose the times they wish to attend. Reasonably priced Chuck Wagon Concessions are also available, which includes a pulled pork lunch.

In between the day’s rodeo events are two performances by the all-female “The American Dream” horse riding drill team. “The American Dream” will perform at 10:30 a.m. and again at 2 p.m., featuring two different programs during each performance&nbsp;(All performance times are approximate.)

The 18th Annual Rosewood Rodeo’s grand entry and flag ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Then, throughout the day, therapeutic rodeo events will be held for Rosewood Services riders, including an event for children riders, followed by the award ceremony at approximately 3:30 p.m.

During the rodeo, the public can participate in a&nbsp;silent auction, where you can expect to find excellent deals on merchandise, with all bids closing at 3 p.m.&nbsp; Proceeds from the auction go to Rosewood’s non-profit Roots &amp; Wings Foundation. The foundation provides therapeutic, educational and recreational opportunities to people in need who have developmental disabilities.

Plan to attend any or all of the day’s events while browsing tack-shop merchandise, which will be available throughout the day.

Rosewood Rodeo returns to provide free entertainment in Great Bend

Please do not attach your phone to a harvested deer. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Park (KDWPT) is moving towards digital applications for its licensing, but a little common sense goes a long way. Most know not to attach their phones to a harvested deer, but there are changes with this year's tags that are now on paper, not the green material of the past.

"Obviously that paper copy is not waterproof," said Cheyenne Bottoms Area Wildlife Manager Jason Wagner. "Put it in a Ziplock bag to keep that tag waterproof. Then when you tag your deer, bring a zip tie like most people do, or a piece of rope, and tie that to your deer like you did before."

Wagner also provided clarification on tagging multiple deer. In an effort to reduce numbers in the past, KWDPT allowed the harvesting of multiple female whitetails on public hunting lands. The management worked to reduce numbers, and now hunters are limited to just one deer on public lands like the Bottoms. If multiple tags are purchased, only the first one may be used on public lands.

"You can't go out and shoot a doe on private land, put the first one on there, then go to Cheyenne Bottoms and a shoot a second doe and put your second tag on there," Wagner said. "It has to be your first whitetail tag."

KDWPT promotes the use of the Gooutdoorskansas application on phones for digital licensing and tagging. The application provides wildlife managers with real-time access to data.

"When we had the green tags before, we didn't see a lot of that data," Wagner said. "But a lot of states do require it. That just gives us a better idea on harvest rates, harvest compliance, how many bucks, does, fawns are getting harvested."

Muzzleloader and archery seasons in Kansas began on Sept. 12.

Wildlife manager: how to properly tag your whitetail this fall

A family medicine physician, who recently moved to Larned, has started seeing patients at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital and its clinic, Pawnee Valley Medical Associates.

Kurtis Herwich, DO, is caring for and treating patients of all ages, offering the full range of primary care services. His office is at the clinic.

“I have been interested in a smaller community ever since I started medical school,” Dr. Herwich said. “There are many challenges in rural areas, but Larned has an excellent balance. It provides many services found in larger cities, as well as those offered in collaboration with HaysMed.

“The facilities are very impressive, and it is obvious that this community cares deeply for their hospital,” he added. “Everyone has been welcoming, and I hope they are as excited about working with me as I am about working with them.”

Dr. Herwich treats the whole gamut of family-medicine conditions – from anemia to zinc deficiency.

“Most days there is a mix of sore throats, runny noses, itchy eyes and sports injuries, as well as chronic conditions such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and high blood pressure.

“We also encourage health maintenance and management through yearly check-ups and offer advice about healthy lifestyles,” he noted. “It is easier to establish good habits to prevent disease than it is to treat a condition once it has developed.”

Dr. Herwich has specialized training in Wilderness Medicine, which focuses on patients in austere environments where an Emergency Department is not readily available.

“This includes treatment for injuries, lightning strikes, elevation sickness and snake bites,” he explained. “I also have training in advanced wound care.”

In addition, Dr. Herwich has a personal understanding of the challenges that patients and their families encounter.

“My personal health experiences have given me valuable insight into the medical system, teaching me empathy and perseverance.

“I always try to treat my patients with the same dignity and respect that I would expect for myself. I empower patients to be involved in decision-making to optimize their outcomes.”

The physician offered a definition of a DO, doctor of osteopathic medicine, who receives the same training as an MD, medical doctor. “But there is also additional training for DOs in hands-on techniques for muscle, joint and spine concerns.”

Dr. Herwich earned his DO degree in 2010 at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. His family-practice residency was performed at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center in Niagara Falls, N.Y., from 2011 to 2015.

Previous employers include Wilson Medical Center in Neodesha, Hillsboro Community Hospital and Southwest Boulevard Family Health Care, Kansas City, Kan.

Prior to medical school, Dr. Herwich earned a bachelor’s in mass communications/radio &amp; TV at Kansas State University in 1994. He worked in video and film production, mostly as a sound recordist, for about 14 years. This included extensive national and international travel.

Today, his traveling companion around town and other destinations is Buster Bleu, a rescue cat.

When he got to the scene, he saw his son standing in the ditch. He and his friend wore their seat belts and were OK, just scared and shaken.

“The thought - I nearly lost my son today - ran through my mind as I sat on running boards of my patrol truck, my head in my hands, tears of thankfulness running from my eyes,” Moore said.

Kansas Highway Patrol Lt. Tanner Blakesley&nbsp;was standing on the side of the highway when he was hit by his patrol vehicle, which was struck by a passing vehicle going highway speed.

“The next thing I remember is waking up in the ditch. I was able to put the parts of my broken memory together after seeing the video from my patrol car cameras,” Blakesley said. “There’s nothing like seeing video of yourself launched off your vehicle's windshield into the air.”

Liberal Deputy Chief Chris Head&nbsp;was first on the scene of a rollover crash in Oklahoma. The driver was not wearing a seat belt and died from the injuries. He also found out the driver just had a baby girl. Years later, Head went back to that town and saw a prom photo of the grown-up girl.

“I couldn’t help but think about her dad, and how proud he would have been of his little girl. There was absolutely a void in those photos where he should have been,” Head said.

Stories telling about lives saved & lost shared in annual safety blog series

It’s that time of year again when the weather starts to cool down and everyone looks forward to Fort Larned’s annual Candlelight Tour.&nbsp;

This year’s tour theme is all about dealing with bad food. A shipment of flour delivered to Fort Larned turned out to be bad. Some of the enlisted men had to sift through the flour to find out just how much was bad. What difference did that make you might wonder? Well, the commissary officer could have been financially responsible for the bad flour and needed to know just how much of it there was.&nbsp;

The tour vignettes highlight the important role food shipments played in the life of a frontier fort, and how a shipment of bad food could affect the whole fort’s operation.&nbsp;

The tour will be on Oct. 8 with reservations beginning on Sept. 26 at 8:30 a.m. Reservations can only be made by phone at (620) 285-6911.&nbsp;&nbsp;The first tour will leave at 7:30 p.m. and then every 15 minutes after that until the last tour leaves at 10:15 p.m. for a total of 12 tours. Each tour has space for 20 people and reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.&nbsp;

The health and safety of our visitors, employees, volunteers, and partners continues to be paramount.  </figure>It’s that time of year again when the weather starts to cool down and everyone looks forward to Fort Larned’s annual Candlelight Tour.&nbsp;This year’s tour theme is all about dealing with bad food. A shipment of flour delivered to Fort Larned turned out to be bad. Some of the enlisted men had to sift through the flour to find out just how much was bad. What difference did that make you might wonder? Well, the commissary officer could have been financially responsible for the bad flour and needed to know just how much of it there was.&nbsp;The tour vignettes highlight the important role food shipments played in the life of a frontier fort, and how a shipment of bad food could affect the whole fort’s operation.&nbsp;The tour will be on Oct. 8 with reservations beginning on Sept. 26 at 8:30 a.m. Reservations can only be made by phone at (620) 285-6911.&nbsp;&nbsp;The first tour will leave at 7:30 p.m. and then every 15 minutes after that until the last tour leaves at 10:15 p.m. for a total of 12 tours. The Fall Season is underway for 1,233 student athletes participating in the Kansas State High School Clay Target League (KSSHSCTL) fall program, which is part of the USA Clay Target League. The athletes are competing on 68 high school teams statewide.

“The League continues to break records each year,” said John Nelson, President of the USACTL, “The high demand for outdoor activities that are an alternative to traditional sports proves that young people want to get outside and enjoy safe and fun activities with their peers. Thanks to the efforts of volunteer coaches and parents, these teams are possible”

The students’ six-week season began on Sunday with a practice week to get them warmed up and to record reserve scores in case of weather or other issues. Weekly competition begins on the Sept. 25, and top-scoring teams and athletes will be recognized at the completion of fall competition in October.

“Athletes of all types are able to participate in clay target shooting,” said Nelson, “The League has a ‘no benchwarmers’ philosophy, and the League’s True Team® scoring system is designed so that everyone’s score matters, not just the top athletes on a team.”

About the USA Clay Target League With just under 45,000 participating athletes in 2022, the non-profit USA Clay Target League is America's largest clay target shooting organization. The League offers trap, skeet, sporting clays, and 5-stand leagues to secondary and postsecondary schools across the country.

The League is the only 100-percent, school-approved clay target shooting sport program in America. Every team must have school approval to participate. Most participating schools have lettering programs as well as yearbook inclusion for the teams. In addition, tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships are provided to qualifying seniors by the League and post-secondary institutions each year.

Eagle Radio's News Week in Review

Mini donuts, stuffed waffles, energy drinks, and Middle Eastern food. That's what makes Rock'n Rooster Baked Mini Donuts and Rawya's Middle Eastern Cuisine unique to the area. The businesses have been open since June, but last week Larned Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting for the two eateries located at 1123 Broadway Street in Larned.

"We're trying to offer something that has more of an ethnic background that nobody else can get," said Rock'n Rooster owner Sharon Towery. "They either have to drive to Wichita or Manhattan, or some of the bigger cities. Overall, we've had a very good reception from the community. Most people are just thrilled to eat something totally different."

Rawya Evers is a native of Israel and became good friends with Towery. Evers had built a Middle Eastern food following out of her own home. The friends decided to open their own business.

"This building came open, and I had already kind of started doing the baked mini donuts out of my home," said Towery. "I just said let's go for it, so we decided to join forces, and here we are."

Everything about the businesses is unique, from the non-fried menu, to healthy energy-drink options, to Rawya's ethnic menu. The businesses do have tables for dining, but most orders are made to go.

"It's just Rawya and I here," Towery said. "We don't have any employees, so basically we run the front, run the back, and in between. For lunches, we're a pre-order system. We mostly post on Facebook what our menu is going to be. We try to get pre-orders from there because once we make so many meals, we're out. 

"We're not like a regular restaurant. We're a special eatery, so we don't have overage, we don't have food always stocked. It's basically that special that day, and once we're out, we're out. The next day we have something totally different. That way people don't have the same thing over and over, and also, it helps us with overhead and costs."

The pre-order method usually means shorter wait times, typically no longer than 10 minutes. The stuffed waffles for breakfast - blueberry and cream cheese for example - are also made in short order.

Rock'n Rooster offers a variety of mini donut flavors that vary from week to week. The business offers a wide variety of drinks, including hot and cold lattes with seasonal flavors. Lotus Energy drinks are a natural way to find a little pep in the step.

"It comes from the green coffee bean, so they're a lot healthier than Monster or Red Bull," said Towery. "They offer B-12, they've got a beta-alanine in them. They're just a healthier alternative to getting your regular energy drink."

Rock'n Rooster and Rawya's are open Wednesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., but will be temporarily closed on Saturdays through Oct. 22. Larned Chamber cuts ribbon on two new Broadway eateries

Two little goats. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but perhaps it could be the beginning of an entrepreneurial career.&nbsp;

Today we’ll meet a young rural-preneur who is using her two little goats to learn the principles of entrepreneurship for the future.&nbsp;

Kansas Lange is a teenager who won her county’s Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge in spring 2022. Kansas and her family live in Garfield, in Pawnee County.&nbsp;

Her father is Charles Lange, a K-State grad and public health veterinarian in Dodge City. While inspecting the packing plant in Dodge, Dr. Lang met one of the workers, Sabrina, who is originally from New Mexico. They married, moved to Garfield, and now have two daughters and a son.&nbsp;

Kansas is the younger daughter. “My grandfather suggested they name me Kansas because that is where they met,” Kansas said.&nbsp;

Kansas became very active in 4-H. “I’m homeschooled, so this is my creative outlet and my opportunity to meet people in the community,” Kansas said.&nbsp;

In addition to showing multiple species of livestock, she enrolled in such projects as shooting sports, woodworking, clothing and textiles, and foods and nutrition.&nbsp;

Kyle Grant is the K-State Research and Extension 4-H agent in Pawnee County.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Kansas has excelled in our Pawnee County shooting sports program,” Grant said. “She also excels at livestock judging, meats judging and skillathon, where she earned the opportunity to go to the national contest in Louisville, Kentucky. She is a good role model for Pawnee County 4-H’ers.”&nbsp;

Kansas learned about the Pawnee County Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, sponsored by NetWork Kansas. YEC is a sequence of community-based entrepreneurship competitions for students in grades 6-12, culminating in a state championship.&nbsp;&nbsp;Students present their conceptual or business ideas to judges and compete against others in their age division locally. The top contestants advance to the state finals, held in April at K-State in partnership with the College of Business’ Center for Entrepreneurship and the Kansas Masons.&nbsp;

Erik Pedersen is president and COO of NetWork Kansas. “When you walk into one of these events at a middle school or high school, you see a student standing there with a tabletop display that they’ve created,” he said. “They’re dressed up and talking to a group of adult judges; they’re shaking hands, they’re making eye contact, they’re answering questions about their project or business idea. The life skills that they’re gaining will put them miles ahead of their peers.”&nbsp;

Kansas thought about what project she might enter in this competition. As a teenager, she was experiencing acne on her skin and looking for better skin treatments. “I found a lot of articles that said that goat milk soap could help,” she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;No big city stores carried such products nearby, but she could raise dairy goats and make soap of her own.&nbsp;

Kansas got two Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats that she milked twice daily, did the research and developed a process for producing scented goat milk soap. It worked so well that she wanted to share the products with others and started selling the product locally. She named her business Two Little Goats.&nbsp;

“My mom has a degree in business, so she could help with the business side, and my dad helped with the science and biology,” Kansas said.&nbsp;

She entered her project in the Pawnee County Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge. In 2022, she took first place and advanced to state. At the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s 2022 Ag Growth Summit, Kansas spoke about her project at the entrepreneurship breakout session.&nbsp;

“I especially enjoyed doing the research and thinking on my feet when the judges ask questions,” she said.&nbsp;

She’s a remarkable young woman from the rural community of Garfield, population 151 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

Over 100 Barton Community College students participated in the tenth annual “Golden Belt Glow 4 Life” 5k run/walk to help raise money to promote suicide awareness and prevention Saturday in Great Bend at Veteran’s Park. The Central Kansas Partnership Suicide Prevention Task Force put on the event.

Student registrations, along with an official sponsorship, raised $3,350 for the cause. Barton Community College Mental Health Counselor Jakki Maser said it’s important to raise awareness about suicide. “I am so proud of the number of students that showed up for the event,” she said. “We are seeing that students care about this cause deeply, as it seems that unfortunately, an increasing number have been personally affected by a suicide loss at some point in their lives.” Maser said although suicide is a very difficult topic to discuss, knowledge is key to saving lives and silence can have tragic results.

“Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people aged 10 to 34,” she said. “Suicide rates have been increasing steadily over the last 15 years and in 2021, a state of emergency was declared for youth and adolescent mental health. Now, more than ever, it is important to increase efforts to improve awareness and prevention.”

Barton students show up to support local suicide awareness 'Glow 4 Life' event

Just in time for “spooky season,” the Barton Theatre Department will present its suspense-filled production of “The Thin Place,” by Lucas Hnath at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7, 8, 14 and 15 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 8 and 15 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Tickets are on sale now at&nbsp;<a href="https://shows.bartonccc.edu/" target="_blank">shows.bartonccc.edu</a>. This show is for mature audiences due to strong language. The play explores elements of the supernatural such as communication with the dead and telepathy.

Barton Theatre Student Sarah MacMahon plays the lead of Hilda who has alleged psychic powers. “This play is unlike any I have seen or performed before,” she said. “It's a modern work and the show almost forces you to be in a different mind. It's chilling, awkward and uncomfortable, but at the same time, it pulls you in and locks your focus. Each detail is important, and you may finish the show and want to come back another night to see if you missed something.”

MacMahon said the habit we have as humans to seek out suspenseful or scary material for entertainment is an interesting tendency to analyze. “I believe that we live in a comfortable place and we enjoy that comfort, but our minds can't help but ponder the dangers of the what-ifs,” she said. “When we see suspenseful plays or shows, it allows our mind to fantasize and immerse itself into an experience of the what-if, to see how we would react. To have a taste without consequence.”

Barton’s new Director of Theatrical Activities Dan Williams said he was looking for a short, modern and scary play. “When I came across this script, I became very excited, as Lucas Hnath is one of the top playwrights in the country right now,” he said. “I love doing new work and teaching modern theatre. This show will feature a new method of production, a frightening story and a suspenseful ending.”

MacMahon has been involved in the theatre program for over a year now and has loved her experience. “The people, the atmosphere, the products we create by all our minds coming together is so beautiful and fun,” she said. “The program has definitely nurtured my love for theatre and I never really want to stop. Even if you aren't majoring in theatre, I recommend taking a class or even joining a performance. The newest healthcare provider at Heart of Kansas Family Health Care may be a familiar face to some of her patients.

Originally from Great Bend, Maria Villanueva, a nurse practitioner, completed her clinical training at Heart of Kansas, 1905 19th.

“When I was here earlier, I had wonderful teachers,” Villanueva recalled. “I am so pleased to be back at Heart of Kansas with this professional and compassionate team.”

Villanueva, who is fluent in Spanish and English, was also attracted to Heart of Kansas because of its long list of physical- and mental-health services and diversity.

“We offer the whole gamut of family-medicine services for all ages, as well as behavioral-health options,” she noted. “Multiple staff members are bilingual and we take same-day appointments for acute issues.”

The responsibilities of a nurse practitioner include monitoring patients for high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, influenza, Covid, bronchitis, abdominal pain and many other chronic and acute conditions.

“As nurse practitioners, we order tests and medications, and refer to specialists when necessary to achieve the best outcomes,” Villanueva said. “Educating patients also is a major responsibility.

“Education is so important because patients should understand what we are doing, why we are doing it and why certain medications are prescribed. We also offer guidance on the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle.”

Villanueva earned an associate’s degree in nursing at Barton Community College before receiving her bachelor’s and master’s in nursing at Grand Canyon University. Her

post-master’s certification as a family nurse practitioner came from Chamberlain University.

“When I was in school, I saw the difference between emergency and primary care,” she said. “I decided to specialize in primary care to help prevent patients from needing an emergency-room visit.”

Villanueva also noted that Heart of Kansas is helping to meet the goals of a national program called Healthy People 2030. It is designed for low-income patients who are uninsured or under-insured.

“The goal is to provide these patients with equal access to quality healthcare,” she explained.

Villanueva’s previous employers include the former Cherry Village, a long-term-care residence in Great Bend, and The University of Kansas Health System Great Bend Campus.

Brett Middleton, Heart of Kansas chief executive officer, said “even though Maria has been here only a short time, she is making a real difference in her patients’ lives. She is a most welcome addition to our staff.”

Heart of Kansas Family Health Care is a Federally Qualified Health Center, which allows it to be a safety net for patients who are uninsured or underinsured. Its professional providers also welcome those with insurance at the Great Bend, Larned and Stafford locations. Heart of Kansas is open to everyone.

Continuing the tradition created by President Edward Hammond more than three decades ago, Fort Hays State University President Tisa Mason will be on the road next week with reporters and editors in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Nebraska.

The primary goals of the annual media tour are to build strong working relationships with members of the media, identify where FHSU experts and resources can assist in news reporting, and listen and learn about the issues that are of greatest concern to the readers, viewers, listeners of each media outlet.

The president’s key messages will focus on the intentional alignment of FHSU’s strategic plan with the Kansas Board of Regents’ strategic plan. A major area of this alignment is a shared commitment to making a high-quality education an affordable reality for families. FHSU’s tuition and fees have long been the lowest among all KBOR system universities and unmatched nationwide.

Academic excellence is also a primary goal in the university’s strategic plan. Recent investments in faculty professional development contribute to the quality of instruction, increase faculty subject-matter expertise, and expand our professors’ personal and professional networks, exposing them to emerging knowledge and best practices.

“Our recent investments in ensuring our students are successful, including new student engagement facilities, integrated health and wellness services, and centralized professional academic advising programs, serve as evidence that the FHSU experience is the best value in higher education anywhere,” said President Mason.

Business development and economic prosperity are other areas of the strategic plan that President Mason will highlight. Several university initiatives have made remarkable progress recently in addressing the needs of rural Kansans.

The expanding cohort programs in social work, nursing, and communication sciences based in Dodge City are examples of these initiatives. Two dynamic teacher education and licensing programs that directly support rural school districts have also had a big impact. Also, the expanding Regional De-escalation Training Center at FHSU, which is training law enforcement officers on how to use personality modeling to defuse potentially violent confrontations, will be highlighted.&nbsp;

President Mason will also discuss FHSU’s newest economic development initiative, the Cybersecurity Institute and Technology Incubator in Hays. Fueled by a $500,000 investment from the state of Kansas, the institute will provide a supportive environment designed to help technology and security-oriented ventures develop and ultimately launch.&nbsp;

All but one of the stops on this year’s tour will be different from last year. Scheduled stops in Nebraska and Oklahoma were added to highlight the more than 340 on-campus and online students enrolled from these two bordering states.

Golden Belt Humane Society appreciates the help it receives from the community. And now it's time to give back. Saturday morning at Brit Spaugh Park, the humane society will be handing out pet food and materials on a first-come, first-serve basis. Director Heather Acheson said it's part of a partnership with Chewy brand and the Humane Society of the U.S.

"There's no limit, so whenever they have a truck available, they alternate through different shelters," she said. "I happen to have the space to get all this food and hold onto it until we do a giveaway."

The event begins Saturday morning at 10 a.m. on the north side of Brit Spaugh Park, and will run until supplies run out. The supplies are for community-owned, or personal pets, and there is a limit of four items per person. 

Acheson has received all sorts of goods before, from horse and llama food to dog kennels, bathtubs, and bowls. This giveaway will consist mostly of food, but cat litter and potty pads will also be available. 

"I think a lot of its either overstock, it's been discontinued, maybe different packaging, maybe defective a little bit," Acheson said. "It's a wide variety of stuff."

Volunteers will assist in handing out the supplies Saturday, and those wishing to pick up goods must be present.

For years, the City of Great Bend battled a blue-green algae issue at
Veterans Lake. The problem was remedied in 2015 by inserting doses of alum into
the body of water to remove the phosphorus from the geese. The lake has
remained off the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s blue-green algae
warning list since the alum insert. That’s the good news. 
The bad news is the previous blue-green algae issues have wiped out most of the
habitat for the fish, such as plants beneath the water. 
City Administrator Kendal Francis said the state continues to stock the lake
with fish, but without much habitat, there is no place for the fish to feed,
hide, grow and live. The city hopes to create artificial habitats at both Vet’s
Lake and Stone Lake. 
"A lot of the water willows will be on the edge," said Francis. "There were some talks about cattails down by the walking bridge, but those can be invasive. These are not enormous structures." 
The state will provide the vegetation habitats to plant or install, but the city
will need to build structures around the habitat sections until they’re strong enough
on their own. Great Bend is considering high school groups to help build and
install the aquatic life. 
"Biologists told us it needs to be a two to three year process to really get things established, but once it's established, then the fish will have a habitat and the fishing will be significantly better," said Francis. 
Funding to build up the fish habitats will come from the .15% sales tax revenue
designated for quality of life projects. There is $5,500 assigned to the
project this year, and $5,000 planned for each the next two years.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
