Wanting to reduce the mental health gap for veterans, the military
community, first responders and their families, Dropping 22 formed as a
nonprofit organization in Great Bend. 
The name Dropping 22 comes from the statistic that 22 veterans take their lives
every day. The organization is doing what they can to drop that number. 
Dropping 22’s Melissa Ewing said another Military and First Responders Night
Out is coming up Friday, Oct. 28 providing free childcare to allow military and
first responder adults a night out without the worry of finding a sitter. 
"We just want to give an opportunity, for the population that we serve, to have a night out to run errands, do some selfcare and take care of themselves," said Ewing. "This is one way we can do that." 
The Night Out is offered the fourth Friday of the month and is available for
children ages 6-10 years old. The services are available from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at 916 Williams Street.

Free babysitting Friday in Great Bend for military and first responders

In August, the USD 428 Great Bend Board of Education approved 5-2 the purchase of an online tutoring program, Paper, for students in grades 5-12. Earlier this week, the program went live. Using Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief money, the district paid $101,000 for a 12-month subscription to the service. Assistant Superintendent Tricia Reiser said it is all about providing 24/7 access for students.

"We're really excited about this opportunity for students, especially post-COVID, providing them the opportunity and resources to get the help they need," she said.

According to Paper's website, the service was created to solve equity, cost, and scale for school districts. Paper features multi-lingual chat-based tutoring available 24/7, and also has an essay review component so students can upload written documents and receive immediate feedback. The program went live for students Monday, but was really introduced to parents during last week's parent-teacher conferences.

"The feedback I'm getting from the buildings is that parents are very excited about this opportunity for their kids," said Reiser. "I had one parent actually stand up in one of our meetings and say, 'This is exactly what I've been looking for. I haven't been able to help my student with his homework, but now I know where to guide them so I can get the help they need.'"

Paper is available to all students in the district grades 5-12, but Reiser said it is especially aimed at those who work and play sports or are otherwise unable to get tutoring help when teachers are available. Parents have been informed about the benefits of Paper and how to login via the conferences and emails, and family engagement coordinators at Great Bend High School will host a meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16, to further explore the program.

Larned's recycling center to re-open Thursday

A handful of Eagle Radio employees from Great Bend were honored Monday
night at the Kansas Association of Broadcasters (KAB) Convention in Manhattan.
The broadcasting competition encourages the highest standards of reporting,
programming and promotion. 
Eagle Radio won four awards from the state-wide competition and Market Manager
Matt Althouse was recognized with the Rising Star Award as a broadcaster, under
the age of 40, who has made a significant impact on their stations and community. "It was a great night for Eagle in Great Bend," said Althouse. "It was a lot of fun to get up on stage and talk about the Rising Star award. It was how I accidently ended up there by walking through doorways of people who are very talented and just asking how can I help. It was fun to see a lot of people succeed."

Eagle Radio – Great Bend staff recognized with KAB awards

The Barton County Commission, at Wednesday's regular meeting, encouraged basketball coach Ethan Thomas on his mission to start a youth basketball league in the county. Some commissioners even pledged monetary support privately. But the body agreed that public tax dollars should not be used to sponsor a new basketball league.

"This is an admirable project you have, and I know you've put a lot of thought and work into it," said Commissioner Jennifer Schartz. "I wholeheartedly support kids and athletics, that kind of goes without saying. But, collectively, as a commission, we made a decision not to add any non-profit activities, and we're out of our funding cycle right now, so we don't even have money earmarked for any kind of project like this."

Thomas, a coach at Central Kansas Christian Academy in Great Bend, said he had fond memories of a similar league growing up and wanted today's young players to have a similar experience.

"I remember playing, when I was in elementary, a Christian basketball league," he said. "We played Hoisington, we played Holy Family, we played St. Rose. We had CKCA, we had Larned, Kinsley, Dodge City, Ness City. We played all over. I played from fourth grade through eighth grade, and it made me who I was today as a basketball player and a basketball coach."

Several issues prevented the formation of a similar Christian league, so Thomas proposed a Barton County elementary school league. In speaking with USD 428 Superintendent Khris Thexton, Thomas learned public elementary schools in the district would be able to use school mascots but not school names. The new league would not violate any Kansas State High School Activities Association rules.

Thomas proposed an 8-week schedule in a league that would feature seven teams from Great Bend. Players from grades 3-4 would make up a B team, and players grades 5-6 would make up the A team. Games would be played at CKCA, Holy Family, and the PAC at the Great Bend High School. The games would also include cheerleaders to allow for development in that sport. Thomas also reported Identifications in Great Bend had agreed on a bargain price for trophies and medals at the end of a single-elimination tournament to close out the season.

"I would also like to include trophies for the tournament," Thomas said. "That was one thing I remember playing in the Christian League. We had a tournament, and we had trophies you could put in your school. It's something you would be proud of, and you could walk with your parents and say, 'Hey, I played, and I earned that trophy.'"

Thomas said using young officials alongside experienced ones would help address the growing concern of a shortage of officials. The season would run in the fall so as not to conflict with area rec programs that begin in the winter.

In the end, the commission agreed it could not fund the approximately $7,000 one-time request to sponsor the league. Commissioner Barb Esfeld referred Thomas to some of the private organizations that might be able to assist, and other commissioners suggested approaching private businesses for sponsorships.

Coach Thomas is looking to establish an elementary league in Barton County to give community children an opportunity to play at an early age and collectively build all future County athletes.  Coach Thomas is asking the Barton County Commissioners to consider sponsoring this league through funding the cost of referees and trophies.  The Commission declined to provide support, but offered to provide personal donations toward the league and encouraged Coach Thomas to contact local Recreation Commission and business and civic groups for sponsorship. 

 EMERGENCY RISK MANAGEMENT:  Fiscal Year 2022 Emergency Management Performance Grant Program:  -Amy Miller, Emergency Risk Manager, provided details.  The Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) Program provides federal funding to assist states and local governments in developing and carrying out emergency management programs. Passed through the Kansas Division of Emergency Management, these funds are used to assist Counties in enhancing and sustaining all-hazard emergency management programs for the protection of life and property.  The Commission authorized the Fiscal Year 2022 grant application.

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING:  Barton County and Great Bend Economic Development:  -Matt Patzner, Director of Operations, presented details.   In August, 2022, Chris Komarek, Ellinwood City Administrator, detailed that the City of Ellinwood is working to develop a water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer infrastructure project.  Included in the project are both the new hospital and new housing area.  The Commission approved $300,000.00 in financial support and directed the County Counselor to develop a Memorandum of Understanding reference the administration of the funding.  The Memorandum of Understanding, as reviewed by Great Bend Economic Development and the City of Ellinwood, was approved. 

 CUNA MUTUAL:  Full Release of Mortgage:  -Mr. Patzner provided details. In 2004, the Commission authorized a loan to CPI Qualified Plan Consultants, Inc. of approximately $1.7 million.  Terms included a five (5) year deferred principal payment with interest paid annually on a ten (10) year note at four percent (4%) interest.   The loan proceeds were to be used by CPI, in conjunction with monies received from other lending sources, the City of Great Bend and local investors, to purchase the business from A. G. Edwards.  In 2009, the loan was repaid following the purchase of the business by CUNA Mutual.  The Commission approved a Full Release of Mortgage as part of the sale of the building to USD 428.

ADOPTION OF THE 2022 / 2023 AUTHORIZED POSITIONS LISTING:  -Mr. Patzner provided details.  The Commission last adopted the 2022 / 2023 Authorized Positions Listing in August of this year.  Given certain changes at the Health Department relative to grants and COVID authorizations, the listing was updated.

KANSAS ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES:  Conference Overview: -Commissioner Barb Esfeld led the discussion.  The Commission asked those department heads that attended the KAC Annual Conference to provide a conference overview.&nbsp;&nbsp;

that go toward the college? These are questions that are asked a lot, and the
college can provide a purely statistical response after having the Docking
Institute at Fort Hays State University conduct a return on tax investment from
Barton Community College. 
The college’s average economic impact between 2019 and 2021 in Barton County
was $20.6 million.

Barton’s Director of Institutional Effectiveness Todd Mobray
stated over that three-year average, for every $1 of revenue derived from
Barton County taxes, the college spent $2.05 directly back in the county. 
"We're trying to get additional information," said Mobray. "We know we spend $2.05 directly in Barton County for every one dollar in taxes. The economic impact number will be higher than that because the information the institute will get from us will add to that."

An expanded survey will calculate what revenue the college brings to town, including hosting the Class 1A-DII State Basketball Tournament. 
Of the college’s total revenue, Barton County taxes accounted for nearly 28% of
the budget. Tuition and fees made up more than 34% of the college's revenue, state aid 27% and grants and other sources at 10%. 
For the 2021-2022 academic year, Barton had 212 full-time employees living in
Barton County and 109 part-time employees living within the county. Almost
$13.7 million was paid in salaries and benefits to Barton County residents. 
More than $2.1 million was awarded in financial aid for Barton County

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (10/25)

Sweet Dreams are now a little bittersweet. Three years ago, Skylar Meeker opened Sweet Dreams Candy Shop in downtown Great Bend. Two months ago, she announced the store was up for sale, with a buyer needed before November. With some hits and misses on that front, Meeker says the store is now liquidating its merchandise and furniture.

"It's hard because this was a childhood dream of mine, but I'm thankful I got to carry it out and experience it for three years," she said. "I think that part is helpful not feel quite so sad about it. I think the hardest part is when I have my loyal customers that come in and bring it up and talk about it. That's one thing I've tried hard to do over the last three years is not just run a business, but form relationships with my customers in our community. That's when it makes it hard."

The store was originally opened on Lakin Avenue in October 2019, eventually moving to 1403 Main Street in May 2021. Meeker's oldest of three children was diagnosed with epilepsy a couple of years ago, and complications with that helped force Meeker's business decision.

Meeker was contacted by several local and out-of-town individuals about purchasing the business, but none felt like it was the right fit. To close the doors in the coming months, Meeker is marking down prices.

"This week we are doing 25 percent off store-wide," she said. "We actually even have some items marked down to 50 percent off. We have a lot of inventory to try to sell off. As we sell off inventory, we're selling off furniture and equipment."

Sweet Dreams Candy Shop is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone interested in purchasing equipment or furniture can stop in during business hours, call (620) 796-2639, or email sweetdreamscandyshopllc@gmail.com.

By GREG DOERING Kansas Farm Bureau I recently had to fire up the furnace for the first time this season. As painful as it was to switch the thermostat from the off position to heat, Mother Nature forced my hand with a hard freeze about two weeks early. In my mind there’s nothing better than waking up in a chilly house. On the flip side, there’s nothing worse than being awoken by a freezing house. The acorns falling on my roof for the past few weeks were one of the first signals this day was coming. Despite the drought, the oak tree north of my house has had a productive year. We’ve endured what can best be described as an intermittent hailstorm since late August. The seeds land with a thud before rolling into the gutter. Some of the larger acorns get a significant enough bounce off the hipped roof to make it to the patio, which adds an extra bit of excitement to each step once the little ovals are covered by leaves. The leaves and acorns will require some extra work over the coming weeks to remove. Like switching on the heat, raking leaves, disconnecting hoses and cleaning gutters are just some of the season’s many routines. In a couple of weeks my wife and I will participate in what’s become another fall tradition, voting early. Like any good idiosyncratic custom, this habit developed accidentally rather than on purpose. We’ll go out to breakfast on the Saturday before Election Day. On our way home we’ll stop by the county annex building to cast our ballots. I don’t remember exactly how this particular routine got started, but it ranks high on the list for why fall is my favorite season. Even if I’m not fully satisfied with the slate of candidates, I get to talk over the choices with my wife at our favorite breakfast place. Of course, voting early does involve a little risk. There’s always the chance of late-breaking news happening in the hours between Saturday morning and Tuesday evening that would change my vote in a particular race. I think the odds of that happening are up there with delaying my vote, getting busy on the second Tuesday of November and not voting, only to see a race end in a tie all because I didn’t cast my ballot. Both are plausible if highly unlikely scenarios. After voting, we’ll likely spend the rest of the day working outside, picking up acorns that have bounced off the roof and raking leaves into giant piles. At least one of us will probably try to watch a little football and possibly sneak in an afternoon nap. In some ways, elections are the easiest way we control our own governance. The hard work comes later, when you have to ensure winning candidates stick to their campaign promises if you voted for them. Tougher still is convincing someone you didn’t vote for to reconsider their position. That work will come in a different season. Whether you’re starting a tradition or sticking to an old routine, fall is voting season. I encourage you to make the most of it and cast your ballot anytime between now and Nov. 8.

The severe drought has affected most aspects of our lives. Crops are struggling and water is scarce for livestock. In Barton County, is also means that there is little water at Cheyenne Bottoms, the largest inland marsh in the United States and a major resting point for many migratory birds on their way South. So, what happens when the Bottoms has little to no water? Where do the birds go? And when will they come back? How does this effect other wildlife, and subsequent hunting, in the area?

On Nov. 8, starting at 6 PM, join K-State Research and Extension at Cheyenne Bottoms Education Center, located at 592 NE K 156 Hwy, Great Bend, KS for a program over wildlife and the drought. Drew Ricketts, KSRE Wildlife Specialist, will talk about how drought affects the pheasant population and migration patterns of waterfowl. Chip Redmond, assistant meteorologist for the KSU Weather Data Library and manager of the Kansas Mesonet will be showing us the drought patterns and the weather outlook for the next year. We will also have Mike Oldham, Wildlife Refuge Manager at Quivira and Tom Bidrowski from Cheyenne Bottoms on hand to answer questions about the wetlands areas.

BOOR: Drought and wildlife

Twenty new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on October 21, 2022 in a ceremony held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium. Angela Enriquez, with the Barton County Sheriff's Office, was among the graduating class.&nbsp;

This graduation ceremony marked the 300th&nbsp;class to graduate from KLETC since it was&nbsp;created in 1968.&nbsp; “Every class is special, but this class is special numerically because it is our 300th&nbsp;basic training class,” said Executive Director Darin Beck.&nbsp; Beck, who has served&nbsp;as Executive Director since June of 2018, shared a little bit of KLETC history with the graduates.&nbsp; “In 1968 the legislature created KLETC by statute.&nbsp; They recognized that there was a need to formalize training in the state, and the first basic training class was held February 26, 1968 to March 15, 1968.”

The commencement speaker for the ceremony, Attorney General Derek Schmidt, said it was special to be back for the 300th, and expressed his appreciation for the graduates.&nbsp; “Their decision to enter this profession, this line of work – to serve despite the perils, to serve despite the criticism – is admirable.”

Barton Co. officer among latest to graduate from KLETC

Good news was the theme for Tuesday's USD 428 Board of Education Luncheon at Eisenhower Elementary School. Principal JoAnn Blevins provided the board with many statistical indicators and goals that suggest kids are doing well coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Blevins said three years ago, 83 percent of students pre-k through sixth grade were at grade level for math. That number has increased to 84 percent. Sixty-six percent of those students are in the college and career-ready top tier. In reading, the increase is even bigger from 76 percent in 2019 to 85 percent now.

"We're pretty excited to see those numbers go in the right direction, especially this reading number, thinking about all the challenges we've had the last year and a half or so," Blevins said.

There are currently 277 students enrolled at Eisenhower, and 47 kids enrolled in the Little Panthers Preschool. Not only are those three and four-year-olds learning manners and motor skills, but they are also getting a leg up before kindergarten.

"We can really see in our data in our three-year-olds that moved up with us to our four-year-olds, all of them are falling into tier 1," Blevins said. "Every single one. Early learning matters, and it's a huge, huge benefit to not just us as a school system, but to us as a community."

Blevins said family is a big theme at the school and told the board about the monthly "family reunions" held in the gymnasium. The goal is to celebrate students and teachers, various accomplishments, and perfect attendance. Each class also comes up with a cheer, and a spirit stick is awarded to the top class. That class will then vote on the next month's winner. The students are also introduced to the character trait word for the month. "Self-direction" was the word for October, and November transitions to "teamwork."

Veterans Day is Friday, Nov. 11. In honor, each K-6 Eisenhower student has been allowed to invite a veteran to a free lunch at the school.

Eisenhower Elementary trending in right direction in spite of COVID

Barton Community College's Natural Gas Program recently received a metering skid with flow control from Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline, Inc. This is a sign of the company’s commitment to being a part of educating natural gas professionals as a way of furthering its vision of providing clean, safe and reliable energy.

Southern Star President and Chief Executive Officer Shawn Patterson said the natural gas transmission and distribution program at Barton provides tomorrow’s workers with the hands-on experience that is crucial to their success in the natural gas industry and that access to genuine equipment serves to familiarize students with the equipment that they may encounter on the job. Several of Southern Star’s employees have been through the Barton program.

“Southern Star recognizes the importance of training young men and women who are working hard to be a part of our industry,” Patterson said. “This metering skid will provide students real-life experience to advance their skillset as they prepare to enter the workforce.”

Executive Director of Workforce Training &amp; Economic Development Mary Foley said the donation, valued at approximately $225,000, will be put to good use.

“This piece of equipment will be of great value to our students,” Foley said. “The experience they gain from working on and with industry-standard equipment is critical for their training and job readiness. We are grateful that Southern Star has made this investment in our students and our program.”

Another Sunflower Rod and Custom Association (SRCA) season is in the books. The 2022 season at the Great Bend Dragstrip came to a close Saturday with the Gamblers Race. With the season beginning in early May, a dragstrip board member said racers and officials felt the full impact of inflation this year.

"It was a difficult struggle for us this year because we had giant increases in what it costs to actually do the races. One example is the price of compound we actually put on for races, and the issues we had prepping the actual track multiple, multiple times. It put a lot of strain on our volunteers. Everybody worked really hard. We still kept together, kept strong, but it took a lot of force."

The shortage of younger volunteers can be difficult throughout the season, but the toughest part of the 2022 campaign was simply increased prices. The costs of getting to the strip and racing likely doubled or tripled this year, meaning some racers stayed home.

"If it's a choice for somebody to put gas into their vehicle to go to work or come racing, they're probably going to go to work."

Heading into the offseason, the SRCA expects more struggles to acquire the compounds used to prep the track. Part of the composite material used in those sprays comes from overseas, and other racing organizations like NASCAR and NHRA are seeing similar shortages.

The SRCA is still taking donations for track improvements. In 2021, approximately 7,600 feet of containment walls were erected for the safety of drivers. Donations go towards paying for those walls and other regular maintenance items. 

"Any donation goes directly back, 100 percent into the track. Either it be for paying off loans for the wall, or we have the rotators and tractors, we have items we have to buy. All donations, 100 percent, go back into this track."

SRCA Dragstrip makes it through season despite higher costs

The Larned Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 75th
anniversary last Thursday with the Chamber Community Banquet at the Knights of
Columbus in Larned. 
Along with a meal, a program and an awards ceremony were presented where awards
were given out for businesses of the year, volunteer of the year and leaders
of the year. 
The Larned Fire Department was awarded the Non-Profit/Civic Organization of the
Year, an honor that Larned Fire Lieutenant Rachel Hill was grateful to receive. 
"It was an honor for all of our volunteers to be recognized for the efforts they provide to serve our community," said Hill. "We never know when we'll be called out. It could be in the middle of the night, a holiday or family dinner. I think it's really great for all of our guys to be recognized for the time that they give." 
With a volunteer staff, the Larned Fire Department currently has 18 members in

Three-digit phone numbers are an easy way for the public to access assistance: 9-1-1 for emergencies, 8-1-1 to Dig Safe, 9-8-8 for the suicide and crisis lifeline. There's also 2-1-1. United Way of Central Kansas Director Charell Owings reminds those in need it's an easy way to reach out for assistance.

"All you have to do is provide your zip code, and they will give a list of resources in that area, based on what your needs are," she said. "Anyone across the state of Kansas can dial 2-1-1, and they'll be put in touch with somebody that can get them a list of resources in their communities."

UWCK recently released figures from local usage of the service in Barton and Pawnee counties. Forty percent of contacts needed assistance with utilities, and 13 percent requested rent assistance. Another 12 percent requested assistance for housing or transportation. Calling or texting 2-1-1 will put those in need with a list of area providers that can help. 

"It's just a way to centralize that information into one place so that when you call you can get referrals," Owings said. "You're not being sent on a wild goose chase of trying to find help when you're down on your luck and probably don't have the time and resources to be making 20 phone calls to try and find help."

UWCK gives a small portion of its funds to United Way of the Plains, which coordinates the many assistance options into the easy-to-use format. 

"They have the staff and the manpower to be able to do that, whereas our office has basically less than one employee working for us," Owings said. "That's not something we would be able to do here locally, so we contract that through United Way of the Plains and they do all that for us."

2-1-1 also has categories for food, mental health, employment, and legal assistance among several others. Those searching for opportunities to volunteer can also use the service.

Barton County Sheriff's Office Booking Activity (10/24)

Few things beat hands-on experience when it comes to learning a new trade. That's why Innovative Livestock Services (ILS) is hosting its first-ever Farm Immersion Day near Great Bend for local high school students on Nov. 2. 

ILS Communications Specialist Lauren Akers said approximately two dozen students will take part.

"We contacted the local high schools and asked them to each bring three students that wanted to learn more about farming and agriculture," she said. "Maybe some of those ag students or high school students that have never had the opportunity to learn about farming."

At Farm Immersion Day, students will learn how to operate combines and grain carts with the assistance of BTI. They will learn about irrigation, seed sales, the use of drones to monitor crops, and how to calculate  crop yields. Prizes will even be available for the winners of the "nozzle changing relays."

"Hands-on learning, for us, we feel is the most important because it gives you a real-life experience on what you do," Akers said. "Driving a combine, actually getting in there, steering, pushing all the pedals. It really gives kids a chance to really understand so, if someday they are interested in a career, they have a little bit of experience of knowing what even the physical demands are of the job."

ILS previously hosted a Feedyard Immersion Day to give students hands-on experience with that side of the industry, including how to mix a ration, drive a feed truck and front-end loader, and market live cattle. Another Feedyard Immersion Day is scheduled for the spring.

"We're super excited to have all of these students out," said Akers. "Really, this is just a chance for us to help teach about agriculture in general. We're looking forward to the opportunity to have more in the future."

Farm Immersion Day will be a full-day event Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the ILS Farm located five miles southwest of Great Bend.
