High school seniors and current Kansas college students have until March 17, 2023, to apply for one of two $1,000 scholarships from Kansas Wheat honoring industry leaders Herb Clutter and David Radenberg. The scholarships — each worth $1,000 — continue a proud tradition of supporting the future of the Kansas wheat industry.&nbsp;

“It is our honor to offer these scholarships to students who are passionate about agriculture and excel in the classroom and their communities and extracurricular activities,” said Justin Gilpin, Kansas Wheat CEO. “This remembrance of two Kansas wheat farmers helps continue their legacies of encouraging the next generation of young women and men to pursue careers in agriculture.”

David Radenberg Memorial Scholarship This year is the first offering of the David Radenberg Memorial Scholarship. The fund will award one $1,000 scholarship to a current undergraduate or graduate student from Kansas who is pursuing a career in the field of agriculture, with preference given to students pursuing a career related to the improvement of wheat. This includes, but is not limited to, wheat genetics, wheat agronomics, wheat breeding, plant pathology, Extension and bioinformatics. Incoming freshmen or transfers are not eligible.&nbsp;To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student at any two- or four-year college or university in Kansas.

David Radenberg was a lifelong wheat farmer in Claflin, Kansas, where his family has farmed for more than 100 years. He represented central Kansas on the Kansas Wheat Commission from April 2011 to March 2020, including serving as chairman from August 2018 to May 2019. Radenberg was also a founding board member of the Kansas Wheat Commission Research Foundation.

During his tenure as a commissioner, he supported wheat research and international marketing efforts, including attending the 31st annual Latin American Millers Conference in Lima, Peru, in 2013. At the time, he expressed how he enjoyed sharing with millers, bakers and merchandisers about the research investments Kansas farmers are making to provide a better-quality product.&nbsp;

In 2013, Radenberg also visited multiple Pacific Rim countries to promote U.S. wheat. The contrast between third-world poverty he saw in thriving modern cities left an impression on him and reinforced his support of wheat research to help feed a hungry world.

“David was passionate about continuous innovations for Kansas wheat farmers through work at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center,” Gilpin said. “This scholarship continues a legacy of his dedication to our mission.”&nbsp;

Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship The Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009 to honor Herb Clutter’s influential role in organizing leadership groups on behalf of Kansas wheat producers.&nbsp;

Herbert W. Clutter was a farmer from Holcomb and the first president of the National Association of Wheat Growers, which was established in 1948. Clutter encouraged Kansas wheat farmers to organize as a strong, unified voice, which led to the formation of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers in 1952. He encouraged research in education and industrial uses of wheat, improved variety development and methods to produce the best product at the lowest cost. Clutter’s efforts led to the formation of the Kansas Wheat Commission by the Kansas legislature in 1957.

Administered by the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers (KAWG), the scholarship fund will award one $1,000 scholarship per year to a college or university-bound incoming freshman from Kansas pursuing a career in the field of agriculture. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must plan to be a full-time student at any two or four-year Kansas college or university. Mike Brown is a former Johnson County commissioner, a failed primary candidate for GOP Secretary of State Scott Schwab’s job, and someone who has expressed sympathy for former President Trump’s lies regarding the 2020 election results. And as of last weekend, he is also the new chairperson of the Kansas Republican party. For those Republicans who want to forget election conspiracies and focus on their party’s substantive platform, this is probably frustrating.

It needs to be remembered that for many ordinary citizens across the country, the continued claims of voter fraud and rigged elections promoted by Trump make little sense. Recent polls show that election denialism has declined, and that only a third of those not already caught up in conspiracy theorizing say they find such paranoia understandable. In short, obsessing and nitpicking over close elections, especially in the wake of the attack on the Capitol in 2021 inspired by Trump’s loss, is increasing seen by many as pointless, dangerous, and strange.

Kansas Republicans, though, have a more complicated history with denialism. Long before Trump started ranting about how he was robbed—and started harassing GOP officials and his own vice-president to get them to support his lost cause—Kansas had Kris Kobach, who for years as Secretary of State focused less on his job than on prosecuting supposed illegal voters, leading to costly losses in court. Kansas Republicans, in short, have seen hysteria over election security overshadow their other responsibilities and priorities before.

Still, despite Kobach’s return to Topeka as Attorney General—after failing in races for governor and the U.S. Senate—many Kansas Republicans likely had reason to feel hopeful for the direction of the state party. Despite the closeness of his loss to Governor Kelly, Derek Schmidt left the stage without recriminations (and Kobach, securing his own very narrow win, said nothing about suing the governor). Schwab won re-election handily in the midst of national under-performance by Republicans, all while insisting the Kansas elections were secure and reliable. Perhaps they were shaking off the preoccupations of their former national leader?

Most rank and file Republicans in the state hopefully are. But some Kansas Republicans are unfortunately still obsessed with the idea, despite lacking any evidence, that nefarious actors are faking votes and corrupting election results. And now they have a state party chair on their side.

When running against Schwab in the Secretary of State GOP primary, Brown mocked his opponent for refusing to claim the same voter-hunting power Kobach had previously abused, insisted that all ballot drop-boxes should be banned, and implied that Schwab was at fault for not investigating outlandish, unsubstantiated claims about ballot-dumping and more. As party chair, he obviously won’t be involved in setting priorities for the Secretary of State, much less shaping voter legislation. Nonetheless, his narrow, 88-90 vote triumph among state party leaders is likely depressing to those Kansas Republicans hoping to move their party out of Trump’s shadow.

Of course, Trump may well be back at the top of the national GOP ticket come 2024, so perhaps the state Republican party is just getting ready to fall in line. But for Republicans who recognize how hopeless and dangerous adhering that paranoid line is—and they do exist!—Brown’s selection likely seems like as an unfortunate stop backwards, while others try to push ahead.

Social media is great at promoting falsehoods. Even with deer season wrapping up around central Kansas in mid-January, Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Manager Jason Wagner said certain rules still apply. That's not always what he sees in conversations on social media. 

"What a lot of people are saying, they're going on Walk-In Hunting and collecting shed antlers," he said. "That is not allowed on Walk-In Hunting. Walk-In Hunting is for the sole purpose of actively hunting."

The Walk-In Hunting Access program began in 1995 to increase the hunting experience by giving hunters access to certain private lands. But that land is still private and specifically used for active hunting, not collecting antlers, morel mushrooms, or even fishing. Permission from the landowners is still required for all non-Walk-In Hunting activities.

Another misconception pertains to treestands used during deer season. Regulation says all treestands must be removed within 14 days of the final day of deer season. The rule helps ensure all hunters have access to a given spot each year, and it's also a safety issue as squirrels or other animals may chew through the straps. Fallen stands are often left for someone else to pick up. Wagner emphasized this regulation applies to all stands, even with game besides deer still in season.

"The regulation says all treestands," he said. "It doesn't say all deer stands, it says treestands must be removed within 14 days of the close of deer season." 

With the 14 days now passed, Wagner encourages hunters who wish to keep their property to remove their treestands. Those found or reported will be removed or destroyed by KDWP staff.

Wildlife regulations, social media myths do not always mesh

The Home in Hays has had many lives.&nbsp;

It was a furniture store, a bar and, most recently, a Crossfit fitness center. It will reopen this spring as the Home Event Center.

"Everyone out there knows of that building as the Home," said Chace Malone, owner. "Our hope is to bring in more memories with the Home tied to it."

Malone, a Denver developer, was looking for an investment property in Hays, and his real estate agent suggested the Home property, 229 W. 10th.

The building is being renovated and will include a new dance floor and two updated wet bars. The building is about 8,000 square feet. The new dance floor will be about 1,400 square feet.&nbsp;

When the space is set up with tables, it has a capacity for about 250 people. Without tables, it has a capacity for about 500.&nbsp;

The center will have a DJ booth and a state-of-the-art sound system. The facility also will have a projector and TVs that could be used for slide shows or for meetings.

The center is scheduled to open as soon as April and is booking weddings and other events now for the summer.

Renters will be able to bring in their own catering and alcohol for events. The center will not initially have a liquor license, Malone said.

Malone said he is open for events large and small, including dart tournaments, dance recitals, comedy shows and club meetings.

"You name it, we want to be able to be flexible so we can bring in any sort of activities into the facility," he said.

Just in time for National Cardiac Rehabilitation Week (February 13th – 19th), Clara Barton Medical Center has yet another reason to celebrate. As construction finally nears completion, the Cardiac Rehabilitation/Respiratory Therapy department has moved into its newly renovated and expanded space thanks to Clara Barton Foundation membership support.

Cardiac Rehabilitation is an outpatient service available at Clara Barton Medical Center that includes lifestyle modification, supervised exercise, and education to help individuals learn healthy lifestyle techniques. This type of rehabilitation is done to prevent the progression of coronary artery disease (CAD) and assist in recovery following a heart attack or cardiac surgery.

As heart disease remains the leading cause of death across the United States and worldwide, the growing cardiac rehab program at Clara Barton has been one of the many recipients of foundation funding over the last several years.

“Cardiac Rehabilitation has been truly blessed with the support and generosity the foundation has shown us,” said Lori Vainer, Director of Cardiac Rehab/Respiratory Therapy. “We were able to update our EKG machine, which now allows us to acquire data much quicker and transmit those tracings directly to the patient chart, along with several other exciting new equipment purchases. The foundation’s support has helped us update and enhance our services so our community can continue receiving the quality of care they deserve.”

Clara Barton Foundation committed funds from the 2020-2021 membership drive, totaling $38,712. Members helped replace a 13-year-old EKG unit and a cardiac monitor in addition to helping fund two treadmills with handrails and a recumbent bike.

The additional treadmills and new recumbent bike now allow staff to keep cardiac patients on the move without waiting for equipment to become available. In addition, the recumbent bike gives patients a new exercise option that may be a better fit for their physical capability, further personalizing their treatment plan.

At Clara Barton Medical Center, cardiac rehabilitation and respiratory therapy essentially function as one department with two different areas of focus – the heart and lungs. In the past, all treatments and therapies were crammed into one room. Now that the construction of their new area is complete, the square footage has doubled and now features a dedicated EKG room, a pulmonary function room, an open gym for cardiac rehab, a storage room, and a committed office space.

“Successful membership drives allow us to serve even more patients locally, with top-notch equipment to aid in their rehabilitation process,” said Michelle Moshier, Foundation Director. “We want to remind all of our supporters that membership matters, and you are making a huge impact on the healthcare we deliver in this community.”

Federal resources for GBPD license plate recognition cameras

Great Bend Post The Great Bend Fire Department, along with the Great Bend Police Department and Barton County Sheriff's Office, responded to a fire in the 1800 block of Broadway Avenue on Friday, Feb. 17. The location is just east of the Sheriff's Office.

Upon arrival a large amount of smoke and fire were coming from an attached garage with fire spreading to the attic of the house. Initial crews made an aggressive interior fire attack to find heavy fire, smoke, and heat throughout the house and garage.&nbsp; Crews made a search of the structure and found no occupants inside the residence. During this search two dogs were discovered deceased. Due to the amount of fire and the size of the structure, a mutual aid request was made to the Ellinwood Fire Department who responded with an Engine and firefighters to assist. The home suffered extensive heat and smoke damage with fire damage contained to the garage and attic space at the rear of the structure.&nbsp; &nbsp;The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental in nature and was investigated by fire investigators from the Great Bend Fire Department, Kansas State Fire Marshal Office, and Great Bend Police detectives.&nbsp; Great Bend Fire was assisted at the scene by the Great Bend Police Department, Barton County Sheriff’s Office, Wheatland Electric, Kansas Gas Service, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Several streets were blocked off in the area due to sm0ke and fire hoses crossing roads.

Warmer weather is hopefully right around the corner. That means mowing season is nearing for staff with both Great Bend cemeteries. Operator Michelle Davis said staff would like items removed from the ground at both locations by the end of February.

"We're just asking the public come in and remove all their winter and fall decorations off the ground," she said. "Anything on the stones or in the vases can stay, but everything needs to be picked up off the ground or off the graves so we can, as of March 1, start doing our spring clean-up."

Items not picked up ahead of March 1 will be discarded. Cemetery staff prefers not to throw away personal items, and Davis emphasized that's why individuals need to remove the items before the deadline.

"When we pick it up, we discard it," she said. "We don't hold it. It's very important that, if they want these items, they will need to come get them."

The spring clean-up will take place at both the Broadway and 24th Street cemeteries. Last month, the city announced several new plots were available to purchase at the North Cemetery.

They hosted over 300 students and over 100 guests for a day of fun games and activities, hands-on career and technical education sessions, campus tours, info sessions for parents and more. Smoke filled the sky just before noon on Feb. 7. No worries though, it was just a controlled burn in Pool 2 of Cheyenne Bottoms. Wildlife Manager Jason Wagner said it was something he had wanted to do for an extended period of time, and conditions were finally right to burn off some cattails and phragmites.

"The results were really good," he said. "We got the cattails burned off. It took us a little bit to get everything reignited. It was going alright, then the wind switched just a little bit, and that's when it went really well. I couldn't have asked for a better burn for that area."

Wagner gathered enough staff for the fire on short notice. After an exciting outpour of smoke when the fire was started, staff eventually grew bored, which Wagner prefers to scrambling around. He said it's always scary to light up 500 acres of fuel, but the fire ultimately burned off most of the cattails.

"A lot of times when you're burning cattails, the stock and seedhead stay on there," he said. "It was such an intense fire that those burned up as well, which makes our job easier when we get in there with tractors and stuff."

The fire helped eliminate a generation of cattails next year, allowing staff to work in the area without having to blow the cattail "poof" from equipment radiators several times a day. The absence of the plants will also aid in drying out the ground, which will allow staff to disc the area in an attempt to break up and destroy the root systems.

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (2/16)

Attacks on sports officials often grab national headlines. Two more incidents in the eastern United States once again drew attention to the subject last month. The Kansas state legislature is trying to do its part with a bill that would specifically target abuse of sports officials. Longtime official Mark Goodheart said referees can use the help.

"We're seeing a definite increase in violence, maybe not so much in Kansas, but around us," he said. "Some people are not wanting to register because of that possibility."

House Bill 2139 states abuse of a sports official is intentionally, "Striking, shoving, kicking, spitting on or otherwise causing physical contact with a sports official or threatening to engage in such conduct...". There are also provisions for other verbal and non-verbal attacks and threats. Common battery is already a Class B misdemeanor in the state of Kansas.

Last year, the National Federation of High School State Associations (NFHS) reported more than 50,000 officials had quit nationwide since the 2018-19 school year. The state of Kansas has lost more than 1,300 officials in the past decade. Goodheart said something needs to change to reverse the trend.

"They're also looking at doing background checks on officials more than they have in the past, too," he said. "I think they have to keep with the times and be proactive rather than reactive. They're trying to say we're doing what we can do to help officials, now we need people to start officiating."

The bill was introduced in the Kansas House on Jan. 23, and was heard in the house on Feb. 2. Last Tuesday, the House Committee recommended the bill be forwarded to the Committee on Education.

Good hydration will make the process of giving blood easy.</li><li>Eat a good breakfast or lunch&nbsp;prior&nbsp;to giving blood. Good hydration and good nutrition will help prevent lightheadedness and weakness associated with giving blood.</li><li>Eat iron-rich foods to help provide good hemoglobin. Red meat, oysters, clams, soybeans, dried beans, peas, lentils, whole grain cereals and breads, prunes, dried fruit and liver are excellent sources of iron.</li><li>Vitamin C helps the body absorb the iron, so eat foods rich in vitamin C such as: citrus fruits or juices, kiwi, cantaloupe, strawberries, broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, cabbage, spinach and leafy greens like turnips and collard greens.</li>

I’m highlighting a few of the 40 projects that 4-H offers and this week the focus is on Entomology, Visual Arts, and Reading.

I was fortunate growing up as my dad was the high school biology teacher so everything we did was a science lesson! Among other things, we gathered and looked at all sorts of insects. How did they move? How were their wings made? Did they sting? What did they eat? If these are interesting topics, the Entomology project might be fascinating for you. Youth learn about different types of insects, how they move, and what they eat while learning how to identify and build an insect collection. In more advanced phases, youth learn about pollinators and how to develop a pollinator garden. The annual 4-H Insect Spectacular is a great event for youth to explore and learn.

The Visual Arts project teaches artistic skills and elements, and principles of design. Youth have the opportunity to explore different mediums such as pencil or ink sketches, oil painting, leatherwork, jewelry making, sculpture and ceramics. The variety of kinds of visual arts is always fascinating to me as it teaches skills while encouraging an imagination to soar! During the Kansas State Fair, visual arts exhibits may be awarded a special designation and selected for display at Rock Springs 4-H Center or the Kansas 4-H Foundation.

One of the projects that I love to share about is the Reading project! Youth have an opportunity to explore different genres of literature, how the library works, and how to research and share about a topic that interests them. Reading is a lifetime skill so reading for enjoyment as well as discussion is a good skill to develop no matter your reading level or interest! For fair displays, youth put together a poster or display about a book series or reading in general to showcase with the judge. Additionally, we offer “Reading – creative or dramatic” at our local club days for youth to practice a selection and present it before a judge for feedback. For the top placings in each county, youth have the opportunity to present during the Kansas State Fair as part of the 4-H Communications Showcase.

BERAN: 4-H projects galore

Stueder Contractors supported the kick-off efforts of the Family Crisis Center, Inc. with a $1,000 donation to their upcoming event,&nbsp;Red Shoes and Bunco Too!,&nbsp;to be held on Friday, March 31 at 7 p.m.

“The Family Crisis Center plays an important role in helping a vulnerable population of our community, while also educating to prevent abuse,” said MelEesa Stueder. “As a board member and business in the community, we hope to help raise awareness with our donation. Our community is stronger because of the services provided by the Family Crisis Center.”

The event is in its 7th&nbsp;year and Stueder Contractors continues their support as the event continues to evolve and grow to increase support of domestic &amp; sexual violence survivors and child advocacy.

“This event is important to our mission because it helps fund the resources needed in the 12 counties we serve,” said Kylee Graves,&nbsp;Executive Director of the Family Crisis Center. “We couldn’t do it without the community support, involvement from business leaders like Stueder Contractors and all those who give back.”

In 2022, the Family Crisis Center served 272 domestic violence victims, 30 human trafficking and stalking victims, 50 sexual assault victims and 253 child abuse victims. They also provided 1,940 bed nights for people in the shelter in 2022, a number that is likely to increase in 2023 with the opening of a second shelter in Larned.

“This year’s event is growing to include a virtual silent auction that will open the week prior to event and a raffle you need not be present to win, we’ll hear directly from a survivor about the impact our organization makes,” said Graves. “And of course, dice rolling with the popular Bunco game!”

Community rolls out support for Family Crisis Center Bunco fundraiser

On Tuesday, Feb. 14 at about 10 a.m., a Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Lori Fiscus, age 42. After a routine check, it was discovered Fiscus had outstanding warrants from Saline County for a probation violation. 

The passenger in the vehicle, identified as 29-year-old Kurt Woods, had outstanding warrants for failure to appear and contempt of court in Barton County and the City of Great Bend.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Woods had been sought in connection with several oilfield thefts involving brass valves from tank batteries. Further investigation located methamphetamine inside the vehicle.

Fiscus was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and the warrant from Saline County. There is no bond on the Saline County warrant and a $10,000 bond on the possession of methamphetamine charge.

Woods was arrested on the two local warrants, possession of methamphetamine as well as felony theft related to the oilfield incidents. Woods is being held on a $10,000 bond for the methamphetamine charge, $10,000 bond for felony theft, a warrant from the City of Great Bend for $1,642 and a warrant for Barton County District Court with a bond set at $500.

New this year, the Great Bend Recreation Commission will offer a
flashlight Easter egg hunt. Getting the idea from the City of Mulvane, Great
Bend Rec Marketing Director Megan Hammeke said the event will occur on April 1 at the Great Bend Sports Complex. "Depending on what age you are, you'll go to a certain field," said Hammeke. "As we get to the older range, I'm actually spray painting all the eggs dark green and black so it's harder for the kids to find the eggs with their flashlight." 
In the evening, children will be given flashlights to search for the eggs.

The
Pawesome Easter egg hunt will take place at 1 p.m. the same day. Dogs will be
given a chance to find pet-friendly treats in eggs.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Great Bend Municipal Airport was among 66 airport projects across
the state selected for Kansas Airport Improvement Program (KAIP) funding. This
year, the program awarded more than $11 million. The program typically requires
airport sponsors to participate in project costs by paying a minimum of 5% of
the total project. 
The Great Bend airport received $5,588 to replace the primary wind cone
that sits between the runways. Airport Manager Martin Miller said the current
wind cone has probably been out there for 50 years. "It's a big wind sock," said Miller. "It has a 36-inch throat and is about 12 feet long. It's used by pilots before they take off and when they're landing to determine which way to land. It's primary visual indication of which runway to use. Ours got old and the illumination is old. It's required at airfields, and it's nice to have an up-to-date model." 
The Kansas Department of Transportation Division of Aviation received 153
applications this year for the KAIP grants. Projects were scored according to
impact on flight safety, economic growth and regional benefit.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
