The Clara Barton Hospital Foundation is currently seeking applicants for their 2023 healthcare career scholarships. Each year the foundation awards several scholarships to students pursuing a career in the healthcare field. Scholarship amounts vary depending on the merits of the application and funds available from the endowments. The four scholarships to be awarded this year are the Jonathan Witt Scholarship, the Sadie Stalcup Scholarship, the Verda Lane Nursing Scholarship, and the Dr. Robert Moore Scholarship. The application deadline for all scholarships is April 1, 2023.

Both the Jonathan Witt and Sadie Stalcup scholarships are limited to applicants accepted into, currently enrolled in, or planning to pursue a healthcare career. Applicants must be a current resident or high school graduate in the Clara Barton service area.

The Verda Lane Nursing Scholarship was established at the request of her family to assist students in their academic pursuit to become an LPN, RN, or BSN. Applicants must be admitted to a nursing program and have a current GPA of 3.0 or higher. The scholarship cannot be awarded to pre-nursing students.

Established by his family in honor of his dedicated service to the patients of Clara Barton Medical Center, the Dr. Robert Moore Scholarship assists employees of Clara Barton in continuing their education. Only current employees are eligible and if interested, can call the foundation office to learn more about this scholarship. This specific scholarship application will be accepted year-round until funds are distributed.

Last year’s scholarship recipients were Krista Schneider, Victoria Chacon, Jennah Jeffrey, Macy Hanzlick, Marisa Jonas, Maleigha Schmidt, Livvy Brewer, Delaney Rugan, and Chandra Ehler. Anyone wishing to halt the construction of a high-powered transmission line through Barton County will have to look beyond zoning regulations to do it. Zoning Administrator Judy Goreham briefed commissioners during a Feb. 15 study session about the Grain Belt Express. She was at a commission meeting some 10 years ago when the line was first discussed.

"I remember a handful of people here in extreme opposition because it was going to affect their oil production, it was going to affect their farming capability," she said. "I think when this comes up again, you're going to have that same pushback, but zoning isn't the answer because we can't do anything about it."

The Express would transfer 4,000 megawatts, enough to power 1.6 million homes, each year from wind and solar energy produced near Dodge City, through Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. The proposed line would follow the same path as US-56 between Larned and Great Bend, then veer north to go west of Heizer before cutting east to follow K-4 north out of the county.

Goreham laid out exemptions to zoning regulations, including poles, wires, cables, as well as other equipment for distribution to consumers of telephones, electricity, gas, or water.

The Grain Belt Express project has stirred controversy in each of the states in its path. The Kansas Corporation Commission has authorized construction of the line in Kansas, but only after plans had been approved in the other three states. The KCC did set a sunset on the project, but with an extension due to delays in Missouri and Illinois, Chicago-based Invenergy, which acquired the project in 2018, has until December 2024 to show it has made strides in acquiring easements for the line.

That is the crux of the issue. Nearly 400 miles of line will pass through Kansas, much of which sits over private property. Invenergy will pay landowners for easements that, on average, are 150 feet wide. Invenergy Senior Vice President Patrick Whitty said in an interview last year the company already has agreements with landowners totaling $77 million, and $10 million of that has been paid upfront. The Missouri Independent reported in December 2021 that the company has acquired 65 percent of the 1,700 parcels required for the project throughout Kansas and Missouri. The project offers 110 percent of market value of the land, plus $18,000 for each tower structure, which have bases that are 40 feet by 40 feet wide and range from 130 to 160 feet tall.

The project does have eminent domain in Kansas and Missouri, meaning the company can acquire those easements even if the landowners are unwilling to negotiate. Opponents do not like the idea of a private, for-profit company using eminent domain to take private land.

There are many proponents of the project. As of April 2021, 39 municipalities in Missouri had signed on to use power from the line with total expected savings of $12.8 millon each year. The company also claims the project will create thousands of jobs, save Kansas and Missouri residents up to $7 billion over 20 years, and create an efficient source of power for the 25 states that could ultimately draw power from the line.

Barton Co. zoning regulations cannot stop transmission line

Now is the time to finalize plans for kochia (aka fireweed) control. Kochia can begin emerging in early February with most kochia emerging by early April. Kochia seedlings emerge in dense populations and have dense hairs that make adequate post herbicide coverage and adsorption difficult, with disappointing results. In addition, glyphosate-resistant kochia is prevalent across western Kansas, making kochia control even more challenging. For these reasons, it is important to apply pre-emergence herbicides in late winter or early spring to control this weed before it emerges.

To successfully manage kochia, an herbicide program needs two components:

1. a very soluble and effective herbicide that can be incorporated with very little precipitation, such as dicamba; and

2. an herbicide that has longer residual activity, which will require perhaps 0.75 inches or more precipitation for adequate incorporation, such as atrazine.

Precipitation events during late winter are often too small to activate longer residual herbicides, but dicamba may control kochia for 4 to 6 weeks until the longer residual herbicide is incorporated.

The best timing to apply herbicides for kochia control is generally January through the first week of March but prior to kochia emergence, which can vary depending on weather conditions. Later applications, for example, at the time of burndown, are more likely to occur after kochia emergence, which increases the risk of control failure.

If it is difficult for a grower to apply pre-emerge herbicides in early Spring. A Fall-applied treatment can also be effective to help ensure timely application, and good control, however, they are not likely to effectively control later flushes of kochia.

The duration of a fall applied herbicide in early December and combined with a spring pre-emerge application in late February has achieved greater than 80% control of kochia in Kansas. These treatments were conducted in western Kansas by K-State Weed Science specialist. They used three different treatments and each one was equally effective. They were ATZ + Clarity + Sharpen; ATZ + Clarity + Zidua; and Atrazine + Clarity.

Wheat Rx is a partnership between Kansas Wheat Commission and K-State Research and Extension to disseminate the latest research recommendations for high-yielding and high-quality wheat to Kansas wheat farmers.

These two Wheat Rx schools will have speakers sharing the most up-to-date wheat research information on how to manage your wheat crop not only for yield but also for quality and sustainability, as well as industry partners sharing how growers can capitalize on high protein wheat. Detailed agendas for each school are being finalized and will be shared soon.

The original 10-year plan for Great Bend’s quality of life projects
calls for $240,000 to be allocated for the construction of a splash pad in
2023. Great Bend Interim City Administrator Logan Burns said the simplest
splash pad concept with recycling water is coming in at a minimum of $350,000. 

At
Tuesday’s Great Bend City Council work session, Burns suggested to locate the splash
pad on the north part of Veterans Memorial Park, on the north side of the
restrooms. "The idea behind this is to spread out the amenities," said Burns. "This would get it away from Brit Spaugh Park and away from the pool. It would be its own deal. I think on the north side, we have a lot of good things going on over there and developing that side."

The location of the splash pad at Vets would require the city to alter one of the holes on the disc golf course. 
Burns went on to say the “starter” splash pad might not meet citizens’
expectations. The actual playing surface would be 40' x 25'. Trying to
make it a destination attraction, Burns suggested a 76' x 72' splash
pad that comes with a price tag of up to $675,000.

With a $2 million project in the works to get started this year for Brit Spaugh
Park upgrades, councilmember Cory Urban did not feel accomplishing the splash
pad was feasible in the same year.

New Great Bend splash pad on hold, to be located at Vets Park

The full installation of the new automated water meter reading system is
not complete, but the City of Great Bend has already experienced success
stories with the meters that have been updated. Zenner USA is installing
antennas to existing water meters throughout town to switch Great Bend over to the
Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI). 
Great Bend Public Works Director Jason Cauley said the water department is
already making use of the $2.46 million project. "As a new meter gets put in, it is already talking back to the billing office," said Cauley. "It's already implemented in some respects. As we go along, more and more meters read back to the billing office." 
The contractor is set to begin work for Billing Cycle 4, so residents should
expect to see workers between Washington Street and McKinley, from 18th
Street to the north edge of the city limits. A small area from Harrison Street
to McKinley and Broadway to 18th will also be included with the next
install. 
The new technology will provide more accurate meter reads, by digitally sending
the reading to the water department’s billing office, eliminating the need for
a staff member to walk around town gathering the readings. "We already have run into situations where we received email notification from the system saying that a customer has a leak or very high usage," said Cauley. "We were able to catch it relatively instantaneously, take care of the issue and notify the owner." 
There are approximately 6,500 commercial and residential water meters in the
city’s service area.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Already success stories from Great Bend’s automated water meters

In recognition of their integrity, students were selected based on instructor and staff nominations to represent Barton’s Integrity Values. This spring, the college will feature student stories on its social media accounts that showcase the values of academic integrity and the students who represent them. &nbsp;

Executive Director of Foundational Education Stephanie Joiner said fostering academic integrity is important to help ensure that students walk away with a degree that has value while also helping reinforce key traits that will help students in other areas throughout their lives.

“We all make multiple choices per day,” she said. “Deciding is easier when you have information or a belief on which to base a decision. Awareness and education are two key components for Barton’s Academic Integrity Council, ensuring that students have access to integrity information, knowledge about where they may receive support, and an understanding of the importance of their choices. The students represented in this series exemplify these values that will impact them not only while they are here at Barton but also into their future careers.”

Marina Clark was nominated by her history instructor and is the ambassador representing responsibility. She currently attends Barton at Fort Riley and is headed to Kansas State University in the fall to pursue her dream of becoming an educator. In her nomination she was described as “thoughtful, hard-working, and committed to furthering her education.” Clark said she holds academic integrity close to her heart. “Academic integrity is important to me because it helps me hold myself to a specific set of standards,” she said. “Responsibility plays a really big role in both my academic life and personal life! Barton to highlight academic integrity this spring

The Barton County Courthouse Improvement Project is officially in full swing. On Feb. 8, the Barton County Commission approved the $4.2 million project that will address the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, among other renovations. Wednesday morning, the body moved forward with a pair of leases to ensure courthouse staff will have a place to go while the work is completed.

The brunt of county operations will move to the High Noon Properties building, formerly the JCPenney store, located at 1500 Kansas Ave. in Great Bend. The county will pay $20,000 to hold the property until taking over the lease on June 30, after which point it will rent the building for $15,000 a month, or $4.35 a square foot.

"I think the location of it, being close to the courthouse, is also nice," said Commissioner Donna Zimmerman. "I think everyone can be under one roof with the exception of the court system, which is also a plus."

The commission also approved a 12-month lease at the Great Bend, LLC. property, formerly the Sears store, located at 1709 Main Street in Great Bend. The county will pay $10,000 to secure the building until the June 30 lease kicks in at $5,000 a month, or $6.83 a square foot. District Court and the Barton County Attorney's Office will share that space, with provided space for two courtrooms similar to the system already in place at the courthouse.

"It has two large office spaces, I guess you might call it, that are separated, which will allow us to continue our court operations," said Commission Chair Shawn Hutchinson. "It was a discussion whether or not we should build courtrooms inside the Penneys building. By the time we did that, we could very well slow the project down and spend just as much or more money than just leasing this other building."

Owners of the properties will be responsible for any exterior work needed on the buildings. The county will pay for renovations necessary inside to keep county operations functioning, and $15,000 will be split for carpeting and paint inside the High Noon Properties building. The county cannot apply the $30,000 in hold payments to future lease payments.

"Because of the situation we're in, we needed to get these buildings secured," County Administrator Matt Patzner said. "We just needed to guarantee that they're going to be there for us because of that four-month gap. The timing of this never lined up perfectly, having to approve the project and also needing a place to go. This just ensures we have a place to go."

The leases begin June 30 and will run through June 30, 2024, and both locations have an option of additional month-long contracts for up to 12 months after the first year should the project take longer than expected.

So far, the move is within the county's expected budget for the project, though unknown repair expenses may continue to filter in throughout the process. Patzner said a definitive timeline for the move has not been set, and the county will likely have to hire an outside moving firm to help with the transition.

Today's job fair may be virtual but don't forget to come dressed for success. KansasWorks ONE is holding its Virtual Statewide Job Fair today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Employers from around Kansas, including some in Barton County, will be searching for that next employee. One Stop Operator Laura Patzner said job seekers should come prepared.

"You're really looking at the employers and what jobs they have available, and giving them your information, your resume," she said. "Having that ready and available is really important, and being prepared just like any normal job fair. You want to go in dressed ready, and have your talking points about your skills and your abilities ready so you can impress that employer and find your next career."

The event runs all day, but job seekers can hop in and out of the fair throughout the day. Job seekers will have the opportunity to live chat and interview virtually with employers. Groundbreaking ceremony date set for Ellinwood's new hospital

The Great Bend City Council spent nearly an hour and a half Tuesday
evening hashing over the 10-year, master plan for the quality of life projects.
The early estimates showed the .15% quality of life sales tax should generate
$567,000 to be divvied up among several projects. 

One of the city’s main
focuses this year is completing an overhaul of the south side of Brit
Spaugh Park, just south of the zoo. The city wants to move forward with
constructing an outdoor basketball court, four pickleball courts, two mini
soccer pitches, playground and a restroom facility. 

Great Bend Interim City
Administrator Logan Burns said the approximate $2 million project could
partially use private donations. "Sounds like the money is out there," said Burns. "People want to help with this just to see it through. I think you have to do this project as turnkey. I don't think you can phase it in. That's where the private donations would come in very handy. I just think if you start phasing it in, that's not what you're after at the end of the day."

The quality of life sales tax master plan calls for $725,000 to be set aside for the Brit Spaugh Park project.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission will be contributing $343,700 for the
playground equipment. The Harms Trust will add $60,000 for the basketball
court. 

Great Bend Rec Executive Director Chris Umphres said the mini soccer
pitches are features the Rec has been wanting to bring to town for a few years. "It's a full on kit," said Umphres. "We pour the concrete pad, and the contractor puts the color to it. The fencing and all that stuff...it's basically a big puzzle that they put together. It's locked in. It's set for outdoor soccer. If you've seen the City Auditorium when we do indoor soccer, with walls kind of hockey style, now they have one for outdoor."&nbsp;

The horseshoe pits will be moved to a section just north of the Kansas National Guard Armory. The project would take out the small baseball field and old BMX track location. 
Burns said he will get with the engineer to obtain detailed drawings to get the
project out for bids and come back to the council with the final cost.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

If you've seen the City Auditorium when we do indoor soccer, with walls kind of hockey style, now they have one for outdoor."&nbsp;The horseshoe pits will be moved to a section just north of the Kansas National Guard Armory. The project would take out the small baseball field and old BMX track location. 
Burns said he will get with the engineer to obtain detailed drawings to get the

provide quick and free online training to provide the city’s “front line”
workers with information on the town’s attractions and things to do. There are
eight modules of learning, including a customer service piece and videos on the
city’s attractions. The Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau staff hope to
have 500 of the community’s workers trained by the end of 2023, whether that be
restaurant, gas station or hotel employees. 
CVB Director Christina Hayes said a Frontline Employee of the Year award will
be given out. Hayes presented the 2022 award to Linda Penner Tuesday
night at the Great Bend City Council meeting. 
"Linda has provided customer service that is out of this world, not only for Great Bend but for our entire county," said Hayes. "She retired last year, but we want her to know she's so appreciated in Great Bend for always being willing to go along to trade shows with us or help passing-through travelers." 
Penner served as the senior administrator assistant at the Kansas Wetlands
Education Center for 12 years prior to retiring last June. Penner often joins
city staff at trade shows to promote Great Bend and Cheyenne Bottoms and will be going to Omaha this week for a trade show. 
"I'm so eager to represent the City of Great Bend," said Penner. "We leave tomorrow for Omaha. It's always so much fun to represent this area and push tourism. Thank you. Hopefully, we'll have a successful week and get some visitors down here."

JUVENILE SERVICES: Salto Electronic Lock System: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Marissa Woodmansee, Juvenile Services Director, and Derrick Hollingshead, Information Technology Director, will provide details. To provide continuity of building security at the County building located at 1800 12th Street, Great Bend, Kansas, it is proposed that a Salto electronic lock system be installed to select exterior and interior doors throughout the building. NexTech provided a quote of $5,576.90 to purchase the locking system. If approved, the Information Technology Department would install the system.

&nbsp; &nbsp;C. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Operating Improvements: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Mr. Hollingshead will provide details. KnowB4 will allow the Information Technology Department to deploy Security Awareness Training to all employees who access a Barton County computer.

&nbsp; &nbsp;D. SOLID WASTE: Wire Guard System Addition to the Certified Rebuild of 826G Caterpillar Landfill Compactor: &nbsp; &nbsp;-Jennifer Hamby, Solid Waste Director, will provide details. On November 2, 2022, the Barton County Commission approved a certified rebuild of the Landfill’s Caterpillar 826G Compactor. Caterpillar has recently developed a new wire guard system for compactors which would be beneficial to add to the rebuild. The system prevents debris and wire from wrapping around compactor axles and interfering with machine performance and causing damage to drivetrain components. This wire guard system can be installed for $15,970.96. As the machine is be dissembled for the rebuild, this would be the opportune time to add the feature.

&nbsp; &nbsp;E. COMPUTER INFORMATION CONCEPTS: Annual Peopleware Agreement: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Matt Patzner, County Administrator, will present details. In 2013, the County purchased a commercial software package from Computer Information Concepts, Inc. (CIC). The software includes tax administration, budgetary / fund accounting, indexing / imaging, payroll / personnel and time / attendance. Added since that time are portals for the Treasurer and the Appraiser.

&nbsp; &nbsp;F. COURTHOUSE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT: Option and Lease Agreement – High Noon Properties: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Mr. Patzner will provide details. The Commission recently took action and initiated a Courthouse Improvement Project centering on the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. The work being done will require Courthouse offices to be temporarily moved to other locations. Fewer wells spudded but more footage drilled: that's the ongoing assessment of current drilling activity in Kansas from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service. IOGSI reports 134 spuds in the week through February 16. Total footage topped 391,000 feet. The Kansas Rig Count west of Wichita dropped by five rigs to nineteen. Drilling was underway Friday on a lease in Ellis. Stafford County operators were drilling on one lease and preparing to spud two new wells. Kansas regulators approved 25 new drilling permits last week, with nine in Western Kansas including two in Barton County and one in Stafford County. That's 193 new drilling locations statewide since the first of the year, compared to 138 at this time last year. Operators completed sixty new wells in Kansas last week, including one in Barton County and two in Ellis County, according to Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service. That's their best weekly tally since January of 2019. &nbsp; The Weekly Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes on Friday showed 760 active drilling rigs across the US, an increase of one natural-gas rig, but the oil rig count was down two. The count in Louisiana was down two rigs. New Mexico was down one. Oklahoma was up one. Domestic crude inventories grew by more than 17 million barrels, to a total of 471.4 million as of February 10. The Energy Information Administration says that's about eight percent higher than the five-year average for this time of year. The government reports a slight increase in US crude production last week. Operators pumped 12.256 million barrels per day in the week through February 10. That's up about 4,000 barrels per day from the week before and nearly 700,000 barrels per day higher than a year ago. EIA said imports dropped to 6.2 million barrels per day, down more than 800-thousand barrels. The auto club Triple-A reports the national average pump price for gasoline on Thursday was down a penny from a week earlier at $3.42 per gallon. Diesel prices were also a penny lower at $4.53 per gallon. In Kansas, pump prices dropped two cents lower for gasoline, at $3.14 per gallon, and four cents lower for diesel, with an average price of $4.06 per gallon. US Oil-by-rail shipments declined for the week but remain about ten percent ahead of a year ago. The Association of American Railroads reports 10,662 tanker carloads of petroleum and petroleum products rolling the rails in the week through February 11th.&nbsp; That's down more than 100 carloads from the week before, but up 10.2% year-over-year. AAR says Canadian traffic was up for the week but down a little over one percent from last year. Operators of the Keystone Pipeline blame a flawed weld and what was called "bending stress" for a crude-oil spill in northern Kansas December 8. TC Energy says stress on the weld flaw led to a crack and eventually an instantaneous rupture. A news release posted on the company Web site February 9 asserts the weld was completed at a fabrication facility within applicable inspection and testing standards. The company said the pipeline was operating within maximum pressure limits, although independent analysis shows a dramatic increase in volumes just before the spill. TC Energy also reduced its estimate of how much crude actually spilled to just under 13,000 barrels. That's based on the amount of oil needed to recharge the pipeline when they restarted it. The company estimates the pipeline spill has cost them $480 million. Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir announced the arrest of two suspects now charged with drug possession and oilfield thefts. Deputies arrested Lori Fiscus, 42, and Kurt Woods, 29, both of Great Bend, during a traffic stop February 14. Bellendir says deputies had sought Woods in connection with a series of thefts involving brass valves taken from tank batteries. The government reported a slight uptick in the number of wells in US shale plays that have been drilled but remain uncompleted. The tally through January rose by 42 wells nationwide. The Eagle Ford shale in South Texas was the only basin that notched a decline. The biggest increases were in Colorado and Wyoming. OPEC's monthly analysis shows world economic growth speeding up alongside worldwide oil demand. The oil cartel predicts global demand will rise by 2.3 million barrels per day this year to nearly 102 million barrels per day. OPEC's Monthly Oil Market Report also reports US crude imports hit a three-year high in January while exports dropped. Europe’s natural gas prices have tumbled to their lowest level in nearly 18 months, dodging a much-feared energy crisis. The government says wholesale prices fell almost 5% Friday to hit $52 per megawatt hour, their lowest level since September 2021 and a fraction of the all-time high of reached in August last year. That's according to data from Independent Commodity Intelligence Service. CNN reports prices are down because of unseasonably warm weather this winter, as well as the region’s efforts to conserve gas, find alternative suppliers and fill storage facilities. The Kremlin announced a crude output cut in response to Western sanctions prompted by the invasion of Ukraine. Russia says it will cut its oil production by 500,000 barrels per day in March, in response to sanctions and the price cap on Russian crude. Bloomberg and Reuters quoted unnamed delegates from the OPEC-Plus group who say the rest of the group will hold to production targets agreed to last week, and will not increase production to make up the difference.&nbsp;&nbsp;

News from the Oil Patch: Oilfield theft suspect arrested

The air is getting a little thinner for Ellinwood senior Britton Dutton as he continues to climb the state's basketball history ranks. Entering Friday's game at Otis-Bison, just 49 prep players, boys or girls, in state history had scored at least 2,000 career points. Phillipsburg senior Taryn Sides reached that mark Friday in Hoxie, and Dutton scored 43 points in three quarters to become the 51st player in state history to accomplish the feat.

"When I was a freshman, I was setting goals," Dutton said. "One of them was to reach 1,000 points by the end of my high school career. I think getting 2,000 is just really cool."

Reaching 1,000 career points is the mark of a good high school basketball player. Dutton entered Friday night 38 points shy of 2,000, but that was hardly an obstacle. The Eagles improved to 18-1 with an 89-33 win. Dutton made 18 of his 27 shots in the game to reach the milestone in the third quarter.

"I knew I just had to be aggressive the whole game, from the start," he said. "I know I can score that much. Coach Derek (Joiner) told me exactly what I was thinking I needed to do, just be aggressive and really just play normal."

Many of the 50 scorers to reach the mark ahead of Dutton had extra state tournament games in their careers. Dutton has not yet played in a state game, but has been blessed with good health to make the most of all his regular-season and sub-state games.

"It's really an incredible accomplishment, especially after I have read how exclusive of a group it really is over the 100 plus years of Kansas high school basketball," Joiner said. "It makes sense when you think about it further. We only get 20 regular-season games in Kansas, so you have to be good as a freshman. Most kids get around 85-90 games in their career, so your average has to be 22-23 points per game for four years. Brit was fortunate to only have to miss one game in his career thus far. You have to be reliable and good at the same time. And our teams have been good all four years."

Ellinwood has posted a 74-14 record in Dutton's three-plus seasons. As a junior, he surpassed 1,400 career points to break the EHS record of 1,390 points, set by Todd Robins in 1986. He holds the school's single-game scoring record with 48 points, and has four of the top-five scoring games on record at EHS. Earlier this year, Dutton signed a letter of intent to continue his career at The University of Illinois-Springfield.

Ellinwood closes out the regular season Tuesday against Ness City. Joiner and Dutton wanted to get the personal feat out of the way ahead of Senior Night.

"So Brit might have been a bit more aggressive than normal versus Otis," Joiner said. "But if you watch the game, he still plays within the parameters of the game and nothing feels forced. In fact, I have had a lot college coaches and coaching friends that tell me he needs to look to score more throughout his career. But Brit plays within the game, which is why I think he's so efficient. He's averaging 26.9 points per game on 17.3 shot attempts per game. So knowing how he accomplished something so rare by just playing within himself and never really forcing the issue adds to the feat."

Fifth-ranked Ellinwood will be the No. 1 seed in a tough Sterling substate that includes No. 3 Moundridge, No. 7 Inman, and No. 8 Sterling, all with at least 15 wins on the season. The Eagles have fallen victim to Sterling in each of the past three postseasons, and the real goal, Dutton said, is to get the team to state.

"Truly just working hard every day and getting better at the things we need to get better at," he said. "Getting better at defense, esecially, because that's the big thing that's going to help us win."

Dutton and Sides surpassed 2,000 points Friday night. Greeley County senior Jaxson Brandl, who helped the Jackrabbits to the Class 1A, Div. II state title last March at Barton Community College, accomplished the feat earlier this month. Pawnee Heights senior Alec Carlson should surpass 1,900 points but will need some big games down the stretch to reach 2,000. With 2,005 career points, Dutton needs just 11 points to surpass Minneapolis' Ryan Wedel at No. 20 on the state's all-time scoring list.

Ellinwood's Dutton reaches 2K, 11 points from all-time top-20

The SRCA Dragstrip west of town and the new ARCY in mural downtown Great Bend have helped make Great Bend a racing powerhouse. That reputation will only be furthered in June as a pair of races converge on the city at the same time. Rocky Mountain Race Week will be on the back end of its route on June 29-30, just as The Great Race is passing through Great Bend from St. Augustine, Fla. to Colorado Springs, Colo.

"Rocky Mountain Race Week starts and stops in Great Bend because they love our dragstrip," said Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Christina Hayes. "What's cool about this year is the Great Race, which is a vintage, it has to be a 1974 or older, they are coming all the way from Florida. What's great about this is, they're coming to town from like 11:35 to 4 p.m. that day, which is June 30, and they're crossing paths with Rocky Mountain Race Week, which is really awesome. That makes Great Bend super significant on this path."

Dragsters with Rocky Mountain Race Week will arrive in town on June 23. After racing locally, they will continue west with a series of stops throughout the Rocky Mountains before returning to Great Bend on June 30. More than 250 racers made the trip last year, staying in area hotels and eating at local restaurants.

The Great Race will be making a lunch stop in Great Bend on June 30. That event features vintage cars making several stops from Florida to&nbsp; Colorado. In that race, drivers must follow traffic rules as they navigate some 220-250 specific instructions each day, including exact turns, speed changes, and stops each team must take. No GPS is allowed and odometers are taped over. Drivers are scored on their ability to follow instructions and pass several daily checkpoints at a certain time. The older the car, the higher the score. 

"I think they looked on a map, and they knew that we're a racing community," Hayes said. "The Rocky Mountain Race Week was just a coincidence. They originally had asked for a big sponsorship and a big piece of that. Since they're only a lunch stop, it really wasn't feasible for us, but we welcome them with great arms, and we love that they're coming in. I think what they're going to love is they get to watch the races that day."

Vintage Wheels Car Club and Shifters of Central Kansas Auto Club are seeking sponsors to help with The Great Race. Last year, 167 racers competed in the Great Race, driving everything from a 1916 Hudson Hill Climber, to a 1934 Ford Indy Racer, to a 1966 Aston Martin. The grand prize for this year's race is $50,000, with nearly $159,000 in total prizes being awarded.

On the mark: Pair of races set to converge on Great Bend in June

The Barton County Commission recently took action and initiated a Courthouse Improvement Project centering on the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system.

The work being done will require Courthouse offices to be temporarily moved to other locations. County Administrator Matt Patzner will present a building lease agreement that would allow certain offices to operate at the High Noon Properties building located at 1500 Kansas Avenue in Great Bend. The location is the former JC Penney building.

The county plans to have staff moved out of the courthouse by mid-June to begin the $4.2 million renovation that includes a new HVAC system, replacement of the two-pipe heating and cooling system and many cosmetic improvements.&nbsp;

The Barton County Commission will consider the proposal at their meeting Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 9 a.m.

Lease agreement presented to Barton Co. for former JC Penney store

Last November, it was announced that a Vietnam Memorial wall replica
would be coming to Great Bend. The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter scale of
the memorial in Washington D.C., will be displayed at Veterans Memorial Park in
Great Bend May 11-14. 
Great Bend Public Lands Director Scott Keeler said the wall, formed with two wings, will be positioned
along the outfield grass at Al Burns Field. "They want to run the wall at a 115-degree angle, kind of a chevron shape out there," said Keeler. "The full wall has a height near eight feet at the center and then tapers down to about four feet. Each one of the wings are 185 feet long. That's 370 feet of wall that will be LED lit, open 24 hours a day while it's there." 
The wall honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S.
Armed Forces in the Vietnam War and bears the names of the more than 58,000 men
and women who died in Vietnam. 
Visitors in Great Bend will be able to do name rubbings of individual names on
the wall.

 </figure>By COLE REIF Great Bend PostLast November, it was announced that a Vietnam Memorial wall replica
would be coming to Great Bend. The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter scale of
the memorial in Washington D.C., will be displayed at Veterans Memorial Park in
Great Bend May 11-14. 
Great Bend Public Lands Director Scott Keeler said the wall, formed with two wings, will be positioned
along the outfield grass at Al Burns Field. "They want to run the wall at a 115-degree angle, kind of a chevron shape out there," said Keeler. "The full wall has a height near eight feet at the center and then tapers down to about four feet. Each one of the wings are 185 feet long. That's 370 feet of wall that will be LED lit, open 24 hours a day while it's there." 
The wall honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S.
Armed Forces in the Vietnam War and bears the names of the more than 58,000 men
and women who died in Vietnam. 
Visitors in Great Bend will be able to do name rubbings of individual names on
the wall.
