For eight months, folks in the La Crosse area have been hungry to have a
local grocery store. On Wednesday, the stretch of having no grocery store will
end as B’s Hometown Market will open at 518 Main Street. The Rush County Grocery was seized by the state for nonpayment of taxes last
August.

With new owners, the past few months have been spent remodeling the
building with new flooring, coolers, paint, electrical work, computer system
and a new meat market. Pat and Kelly Baalmann purchased the store, and Pat said
the grand reopening of the store Wednesday will begin at 10 a.m. with a ribbon
cutting. "I don't even know how to explain it," said Pat Baalmann. "We have a lot of emotions, excitement and nerves. But we're there. It's a big storeroom."

Pat Baalman worked at the grocery store in La Crosse when he was in high school
for three years. With a slight understanding already of how the grocery store
operated, Pat set out to learn about ordering and the computer work. Through
conversations with suppliers like Affiliated Foods, Pepsi and Frito-Lay and
attending food shows, the Baalmans have received help to make a small-town
grocery store successful.

B’s Hometown Market will consist of a
staff with six fulltime employees, seven or eight part-time workers and Pat’s
wife and two children will also help out. Hours of operation will be 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday - Saturday and 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Sunday.

When the grocery store closed last August, it was the first time Rush County was without a grocery store in 140 years.

Suspect wanted for attempted murder of Hoisington police officer

Last summer, approximately 130 students in grades K-5 participated in USD 428's summer REACH program. The program will return for Great Bend students at the end of June. Assistant Superintendent Tricia Reiser laid out the summer school plans at Monday's board of education meeting.

"The elementary principals wanted to go three weeks with an academic summer school, then three weeks with REACH, which is the enrichment summer school," she told the board. "They wanted to take the week of the Fourth of July off."

Summer school for grades 6-12 will be offered from June 5-30 at Great Bend High School and Great Bend Middle School. The PreK-5 Academic Summer School will be offered in each elementary building from 8:30 a.m. to noon from June 5-23. REACH kicks off from June 26-30, then returns from July 10-21. That program will take place at Jefferson and Riley Elementary schools from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays to allow time for field trips and activities. REACH is available to all K-5 students who are in Skyward. 

Certified staff will be paid $500 for both the Academic Summer School and the REACH program. The district's family engagement coordinators will help with REACH programming. 

The letters in REACH stand for recreation, enrichment, academic, curriculum, and health. Last summer, the students attended the Barton County Fair and a museum in Hays, and also participated in a touch-a-truck event in Great Bend. The program came to a close with a lemonade war that raised approximately $1,800 that went back into the elementary schools, along with donations to the Brit Spaugh Zoo and Golden Belt Humane Society.

From the Barton County Conservation District...

We’ve received several calls in the last couple of weeks inquiring if there are funds available for various projects from wells to pumps to windbreaks.&nbsp; April 16, we will begin advertising for our initial sign-up period for the&nbsp;Fiscal Year 2024 State Cost Share&nbsp;contracts. &nbsp;

There are some changes this year.&nbsp; The State Conservation Commission earlier this year adjusted the maximum landowner limit for both the Water Resources and Non Point Source programs &nbsp;to $15,000 for each program in FY2024.&nbsp; The maximum project limit was also adjusted up to $10,000 from $5,000 for all project types in Water Resources and Non Point Source except for On Site Waste (septic systems), which is $2,500.&nbsp; So, while the amount of dollars allotted to each county is likely to stay the same, projects will receive more funding.&nbsp; So, there may be fewer contracts issued, but the ones that are will be more valuable. &nbsp;

Another change is a transition from a percentage payout to a payment rate.&nbsp; The amount is aligned closely with what the NRCS contracts for.&nbsp; These changes have been standardized around the state.&nbsp; Also, all project types allowed by the SCC will be offered in each county.&nbsp; However, the Conservation District Supervisors will develop the ranking system in each county based on what the natural resource concerns are in their area.&nbsp; We are working diligently to come up with a system that considers the needs throughout the county so that conservation dollars are spread more equitably throughout the county. &nbsp;

We will be taking applications through May for the first group of contracts.&nbsp; However, we do accept applications year round, and if there are funds available, we will do a subsequent ranking to issue additional contracts at different times throughout the year.&nbsp; We only advertise for this once a year though.

All of our funds for Fiscal Year 2023 have been allocated, so we won’t have any more until July 1, when we issue our first round of contracts.&nbsp; We will be emailing the announcement and a pdf of the application, the projects eligible, and a blank W-9 in mid-April to everyone on our newsletter mailing list. &nbsp;

We have finished up our first series of gardening classes, “Spring Gardening Basics,” which enjoyed a great turnout and we feel was a great first step towards building a community of gardeners!&nbsp; Now, we are excited about what’s next coming up in April!

Thanks to a generous donation from&nbsp;COPE (Communities Organizing to Promote Equity),&nbsp;The Victory Garden of Barton County will be able to move up our plan of building raised beds to provide gardening space for individual gardeners alongside our learning garden space at the Barton County Historical Society Museum.&nbsp; A work day has been set to build the beds on April 15.&nbsp; We hope to have them filled and ready for planting in May. &nbsp;

Later in May, we are planning some one-off classes at our learning garden at the museum.&nbsp; We will demonstrate how to put together a low-pressure drip irrigation system for the garden, for one.&nbsp; We are also working on a square foot gardening demonstration, and a class on growing tomatoes, one of the most popular vegetables in the home garden!

Registration forms for the garden will be available at the museum and at the Great Bend Senior Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;An organizational meeting will be held on Saturday morning, April 29,&nbsp;where we will go over expectations for participation in the garden.&nbsp; There will not be a charge to participate,

There will be 10 individual raised beds available this year, along with a common herb garden and six mini beds that will be dedicated as common gardens for kids. At the organizational meeting, we will go over the community garden agreement form that all participants will be required to sign.&nbsp; It will include expectations of gardeners, and what gardeners can expect from the Victory Garden. &nbsp;

The Victory Garden of Barton County is a collaboration between the Barton County Conservation District, the Barton County Master Gardeners and the Barton County Historical Society Museum.&nbsp; We benefit from fiscal sponsorship through the&nbsp;Golden Belt Community Foundation.&nbsp; Donations made to the Victory Garden through GBCF are tax deductible. &nbsp;

COPE is&nbsp;a project of the Department of Family Medicine &amp; Community Health, KU School of Medicine.

Kansas Water Plan talk coming up On Monday, April 10, Barton County Conservation District Manager Veronica Coons will present an overview of the Kansas Water Plan, and the portions of the plan that address resource concerns in the Great Bend Prairie Aquifer Planning area.

The Great Bend Senior Center is co-hosting a program with the local League of Women Voters on Monday, April 10, 2023, at 12:30 pm to help the public understand what the Kansas Water Plan (KWP) means for Barton County.

The public is encouraged to call the GB Senior Center for 12 pm lunch reservations and questions at 620-792-3906. Handouts from the KWP will be available that speak to the Great Prairie Regional Advisory Committee.

Nursery Tree update Thank you to everyone who took part in the Nursery Tree Sale this year!&nbsp; We have received word that the truck will be coming on&nbsp;Monday, April 17,&nbsp;though we do not yet have a time yet. This year, our order was large enough to warrant a stop here in Barton County, rather than one central drop off in LaCrosse.&nbsp; With that in mind, we will have the trees delivered to an off-site location that has the space to accommodate so many trees. &nbsp;

If you placed an order, you will be hearing from the district soon with details of where and when you can pick up your trees.&nbsp; In the meantime, if you haven’t already determined the planting location for your tree(s), take some time in the next week to do so, and prepare the spot. Generally, you will want to have a hole slightly deeper than the pot the tree is planted in, and about twice as wide.&nbsp; You may add some compost to the soil if you wish, but it is not necessary.&nbsp; Starter fertilizer is not required either. You want your tree to become accustomed to the soil around it so roots are encouraged to grow outward, rather than stay inside the planting hole, so keeping the soil profile consistent with the rest of the yard is recommended. &nbsp;

If you ordered a taller tree, you will want to have stakes available to provide it support until the roots have had a chance to get established.&nbsp; This usually takes about a year.&nbsp; Also, plan to add a weed barrier and mulch up to two feet out from the trunk of the tree so it doesn’t have to compete with weeds and grass for water and nutrients.&nbsp; We will have weed barrier squares available at pick up for $1 each.

From the Barton County Conservation District...Hello Barton County! &nbsp;We’ve received several calls in the last couple of weeks inquiring if there are funds available for various projects from wells to pumps to windbreaks.&nbsp; April 16, we will begin advertising for our initial sign-up period for the&nbsp;Fiscal Year 2024 State Cost Share&nbsp;contracts. &nbsp;There are some changes this year.&nbsp; The State Conservation Commission earlier this year adjusted the maximum landowner limit for both the Water Resources and Non Point Source programs &nbsp;to $15,000 for each program in FY2024.&nbsp; The maximum project limit was also adjusted up to $10,000 from $5,000 for all project types in Water Resources and Non Point Source except for On Site Waste (septic systems), which is $2,500.&nbsp; So, while the amount of dollars allotted to each county is likely to stay the same, projects will receive more funding.&nbsp; So, there may be fewer contracts issued, but the ones that are will be more valuable. &nbsp;Another change is a transition from a percentage payout to a payment rate.&nbsp; The amount is aligned closely with what the NRCS contracts for.&nbsp; These changes have been standardized around the state.&nbsp; Also, all project types allowed by the SCC will be offered in each county.&nbsp; However, the Conservation District Supervisors will develop the ranking system in each county based on what the natural resource concerns are in their area.&nbsp; We are working diligently to come up with a system that considers the needs throughout the county so that conservation dollars are spread more equitably throughout the county. &nbsp;We will be taking applications through May for the first group of contracts.&nbsp; However, we do accept applications year round, and if there are funds available, we will do a subsequent ranking to issue additional contracts at different times throughout the year.&nbsp; We only advertise for this once a year though.All of our funds for Fiscal Year 2023 have been allocated, so we won’t have any more until July 1, when we issue our first round of contracts.&nbsp; We will be emailing the announcement and a pdf of the application, the projects eligible, and a blank W-9 in mid-April to everyone on our newsletter mailing list. &nbsp;You can also pick up a packet on Thursday, April 13, when you stop in for&nbsp;FSA’s Producer Appreciation Day!&nbsp;Come meet new staff members of FSA, and&nbsp;treat yourself to lunch from 11 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.&nbsp; Sloppy Joes, chips, cookies and drinks are on the menu.&nbsp; We are hoping for good weather and a nice turnout. &nbsp;Happy Spring! &nbsp;Veronica Coons Barton County Conservation District Manager<h2>NRCS is Hiring</h2><figure>

 </figure>Next phase of Victory Garden coming soonWe have finished up our first series of gardening classes, “Spring Gardening Basics,” which enjoyed a great turnout and we feel was a great first step towards building a community of gardeners!&nbsp; Now, we are excited about what’s next coming up in April!Thanks to a generous donation from&nbsp;COPE (Communities Organizing to Promote Equity),&nbsp;The Victory Garden of Barton County will be able to move up our plan of building raised beds to provide gardening space for individual gardeners alongside our learning garden space at the Barton County Historical Society Museum.&nbsp; A work day has been set to build the beds on April 15.&nbsp; We hope to have them filled and ready for planting in May. &nbsp;Later in May, we are planning some one-off classes at our learning garden at the museum.&nbsp; We will demonstrate how to put together a low-pressure drip irrigation system for the garden, for one.&nbsp; We are also working on a square foot gardening demonstration, and a class on growing tomatoes, one of the most popular vegetables in the home garden!Registration forms for the garden will be available at the museum and at the Great Bend Senior Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;An organizational meeting will be held on Saturday morning, April 29,&nbsp;where we will go over expectations for participation in the garden.&nbsp; There will not be a charge to participate,There will be 10 individual raised beds available this year, along with a common herb garden and six mini beds that will be dedicated as common gardens for kids.  </figure>Nursery Tree update Thank you to everyone who took part in the Nursery Tree Sale this year!&nbsp; We have received word that the truck will be coming on&nbsp;Monday, April 17,&nbsp;though we do not yet have a time yet. This year, our order was large enough to warrant a stop here in Barton County, rather than one central drop off in LaCrosse.&nbsp; With that in mind, we will have the trees delivered to an off-site location that has the space to accommodate so many trees. &nbsp;If you placed an order, you will be hearing from the district soon with details of where and when you can pick up your trees.&nbsp; In the meantime, if you haven’t already determined the planting location for your tree(s), take some time in the next week to do so, and prepare the spot. Generally, you will want to have a hole slightly deeper than the pot the tree is planted in, and about twice as wide.&nbsp; You may add some compost to the soil if you wish, but it is not necessary.&nbsp; Starter fertilizer is not required either. Barton Co. Conservation District - April news letter

Task Force 5 is a regional response team consisting of several first responders
that assist with area emergencies such as structural ruins from tornados or
building collapses. Task Force 5 includes several Great Bend Fire Department personnel
that train annually. 

The crew was able to train earlier this month by cutting
and breaking concrete, cutting rebar and setting anchors in concrete. Deputy
Fire Chief Brent Smith said this type of training helps crews with possible
structural collapse emergencies not only in the city and county but also the
region. "It builds everyone's confidence back up," said Smith. "Everybody went through some initial training on that. This built their confidence back up with the use of the tools, how they operate, go together and tear down." 
Stone Sand Company allowed Task Force 5 to come and use materials on the
company’s rubble pile. Structural collapse rescue is one of multiple specialty
teams with the Great Bend Fire Department. There are also teams for trench
rescue, rope rescue and swift water and dive.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend Fire Dept. members receive structure collapse training

Sunflower Diversified Services recently combined two events that raised money for and awareness about its many programs that serve people with developmental disabilities and delays.

The 20th Annual Sunflower Pancake Feed served 470 plates on March 30 when the winner of the Chevy Trailblazer ACTIV drawing was announced.

Jason Burhenn, a Great Bend native, won the vehicle.

“A current Wichita resident, Jason purchased the raffle tickets online after a friend shared with him our Facebook post about the chance to win a new vehicle,” said Cody Harris, Sunflower director of planned giving and community support. “He was super excited and in disbelief when we called him with the news.”

Sunflower sold more than 2,700 Chevy raffle tickets that represented people from more than 30 states and raised more than $26,000.

“This was a successful event and we look forward to doing it again in two years,” Harris said. “We appreciate everyone who came out for pancakes and/or bought tickets for the drawing. They are all winners to us.

“Private donations are crucial to Sunflower and the people we serve,” he continued. “They help us enhance programs to accommodate our neighbors in central Kansas who need a helping hand.”

Sunflower, a non-profit agency, serves infants, toddlers and adults in Barton, Pawnee, Rice, Rush and Stafford counties. It is in its 58th year.

Construction at Hoisington's Bill Kimble Track and Elton Brown Field is expected to begin after the school year. The USD 431 Board of Education debated some changes to the layout of the track facilities during Monday's meeting. The discussion was ultimately tabled. Superintendent Patrick Crowdis approached the idea of switching the jumping and pole vault locations.

"I have talked to Coach Schmidt and taken a look at this," he said. "One of the suggestions is to move the pole vault closer to the track and move the horizontal jumping and flip-flop those, which I don't believe those will be an issue. It will actually, hopefully, be a safer way for us to do that because of the potential of the discus getting away from kids."

Board Member Becky Mooney brought up concerns about congestion with athletes, coaches, and spectators getting from the parking lot to the stands if the changes were made. The javelin was moved to another facility last year, and she pitched the idea of moving other throwing events to free up more space.

"I just think maybe we need to rethink something," she said. "I don't know how many kids do javelin. I don't know how long they're there, if we move the other throwing events out there as well, if that would help. Those track meets are not small. There are a lot of people at them, and that's just going to be too congested, in my opinion."

With construction on the $1.597 million project expected to begin soon, Crowdis planned to contact Dylan Driver with ATG, who will do the work. A special board meeting will likely be scheduled prior to the May meeting to address any changes that need to be made.

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (4/7 - 4/9)

Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir is urging caution after a pair of vehicle accidents in virtually the same spot in Barton County last week. Last Tuesday, a Hoisington man was killed at the intersection of U.S. 281 Highway and JUCO Road just north of Great Bend. Another serious crash occurred at the intersection of Washington Ave. and JUCO Road the next day. For starters, Bellendir said to be on the lookout for motorcycles.

"It's that time of year again," he said. "People are getting their bikes out. They're going to be out riding and enjoying the countryside and traveling. An unlicensed driver, 26-year-old Holly Crum of Great Bend, attempted to make a left turn onto 281 Highway when she pulled her passenger car in front of the motorcycle. Bellendir said T-bone collisions like that are among the most common threat to motorcycle riders, and urged riders to wear a helmet. Wednesday's accident at Washington and JUCO Road comes after the county added various flashing lights and other safety mechanisms to prevent future crashes. 

"Once again, this was a turning incident," said Bellendir. "I've worked a lot of accidents on that intersection since I was a cop back in the 80s. I've seen some pretty severe stuff happen there. I don't really understand it because that is a true 90-degree, squared intersection. Visibility is not that bad. They've cut down a bunch of those trees. But even before that, there was a good line of sight on that roadway."

Bellendir did offer a driving tip for intersections like that at Washington and JUCO Road: drivers must stop at the sign, but statute does not always require drivers to stop behind the stop sign.

Reveal meets the state standards, provides multiple educational resources for teachers and students, and is rigorous with an accessible learning path that leads to content mastery with excellent tech support. The GBHS math curriculum committee presented Savvas MyMathLab as the high school Algebra, Geometry math curriculum. This selection is a customizable online curriculum meeting all the required objectives. In addition, the committee also recommends purchasing Elayn Martin-Gay student workbooks and supplemental materials Kuta (test generator), Gimkit (interactive math games), and graphing calculators. The Secondary Math committee fully supports the adoption of these curriculums. The Administration requests approval to purchase the 7-8 and 9-12 curricula.
