Six sets of seven chromosomes make the wheat genome five times larger than the human genome. This complexity makes wheat breeding even more difficult, but technology like double haploid breeding has helped public and private researchers unlock potential agronomic, quality and even nutritional traits.&nbsp;

Key to this work is a farmer-backed, for-profit plant services company housed at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center — Heartland Plant Innovations (HPI). Dusti Gallagher, HPI president/CEO, recently sat down with Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations, on the “Wheat’s on Your Mind” podcast to walk through the formation of HPI and how the company is accelerating and improving the wheat breeding pipeline.&nbsp;

Technology for crop improvement experienced a boom in the early 2000s, but applying those techniques was focused on corn and soybeans. The push to start HPI was the result of the industry’s recognition that wheat was being left behind when it came to applying innovative breeding tools.&nbsp;

“We were just trying to bring the message that we needed to make sure that wheat stayed relevant in the United States compared to other crops,” Gallagher said. “We wanted to let them know producers, specifically in Kansas and HRW (hard red winter wheat) producers, were really interested in bringing innovations and technology to the forefront with wheat because, at the time, we were losing a little ground to other crops.”&nbsp;

The industry faced another significant challenge at the time — a lack of synergy and collective focus. As a result, a core group brought together representatives from across the industry, including producers representing the Kansas Wheat Commission and the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas State University, the University of Kansas and private companies.&nbsp;

“It started with communication. At that time, there was very little communication between the public and private sectors on wheat breeding; everybody was doing their own thing,” Gallagher said. “So, it started with bringing everybody to the same table to talk about what our common interests were. And once we did that, it started falling into place.”

HPI was officially formed in 2009. Kansas farmers, through state organizations, have majority ownership in HPI, and other members include private companies, universities and individual shareholders. The company started in Throckmorton Hall but quickly recognized that their work to amp up breeding technology required lab space, growth rooms, greenhouse space and other spaces to mix soil, plant pots, thresh heads and more. As a result, the early success of HPI helped provide the spark that led to the construction of the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, where the company is now housed.&nbsp;

Today, HPI has seven full-time staff drawn from all over the world for their unique expertise, including agronomy, molecular biology, botany and biotechnology. In addition, two to three part-time students gain hands-on experience by assisting with harvesting, threshing, caring for plants and more.&nbsp;

Instead of competing with public and private wheat breeding programs, HPI was built around the idea of providing additional bandwidth and applying very specific technologies to assist those programs. The first — and still primary — of these tools is the production of double haploids, which essentially cuts half the time out of the wheat breeding process.&nbsp;

“We’re basically taking only the genetic material from one of the parents, the female parent, and we’re keeping those genetics and rebuilding that plant to where it can be a mature seed-producing plant,” Gallagher said. “And so, there’s a lot of steps along the way.”&nbsp;

The goal of the double haploid process is to create a population of plants that all have the same genetics across all their chromosomes, something that takes generations of traditional breeding to achieve but can be accomplished in a single year with the double haploid process.&nbsp;

“We’re basically rescuing a very tender, very delicate haploid embryo and culturing it and taking care of it until it becomes a viable seedling,” Gallagher said. “Then we double its chromosomes through a process that we’ve created and that we’ve refined here at HPI. And that doubling process then creates a double haploid plant.”

The seeds from these plants then go back to wheat breeding programs, where breeders know the exact genetic material and can more efficiently evaluate lines in their programs.&nbsp;

“When they take it to the field, and they grow it, and they start evaluating it, they know its genotype, then they can make better decisions, and they can either advance that line quickly through their program, or they can make a decision that they need to do more crossing with it,” Gallagher said. “So, the double haploid process is a tool that allows a better-quality line to go through the process, and breeders can advance it quickly, and they can make better decisions based on that very pure genetic line that we provide to them.”

HPI has capacity to produce 20,000 double haploids a year and works with customers from all over the United States, from wheat breeders to public and private crop improvement programs. The process is fee-for-service, so it is open to the entirety of the wheat breeding pipeline.&nbsp;

“Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen the first seeds that have gone through our program,” Gallagher said. “They’ve been released to producers, and so they’ve been very good, healthy varieties that have proven to be profitable for producers.”

In addition to double haploid production, HPI also provides technical expertise using other advanced plant breeding tools, including genotyping and marker-assisted selection as well as supporting traditional wheat breeding programs and proprietary projects. Every piece of the business, however, is built on partnerships.&nbsp;

“The producers are really the foundation for all of this,” Gallagher said. “Everything that we do is driven toward making a better opportunity for those producers to have better varieties to be able to improve their bottom lines.”&nbsp;

From uncovering the dense nutrients for improving wheat as a food crop to bringing in trails from wheat’s wild relatives or improving agronomic traits, Gallagher told Harries there is still more to unlock in the wheat genome.&nbsp;

“I really don’t believe that we have tapped the genetic potential of wheat,” Gallagher said. “We’re just now getting to the point where we’ve mapped the wheat genome, and there’s still so much in there that we need to help discover, and that takes time.”

Ultimately, Gallagher encouraged wheat producers to continue investing in the research process — both in private companies like HPI and public breeding programs like that at K-State.&nbsp;

“Investment in wheat research is critical to us continuing to uncover the vast benefits wheat has to offer,” Gallagher said. “It takes a long time. Investment in wheat research is the long game; it’s not the short game. Continue to support universities and checkoffs because it’s those wheat research dollars that are really going to make an impact. We just need to keep doing what we’re doing, but also looking at new opportunities and new technologies — and that’s what we’re here to do at HPI.”&nbsp;

Tammy Hammond, Rosewood Services&nbsp;founder and executive director in Great Bend, is now a published author. Last month, she published two books on Santa Claus that she wrote over a two-year span, and she has plans to complete and publish two more books in the coming year.

Hammond completed her first book more than a year ago, titled&nbsp;The History of Santa Claus: The Traditions and Origins of Santa as Practiced Around the World.&nbsp;She completed her second book late last year, titled&nbsp;Santas Around the World: Experience America’s Most Unique Santa Collection.&nbsp;Both books were recently published and are available on Amazon and Barnes &amp; Noble as hardcover and paperback editions, as well as on Kindle. Additionally,&nbsp;The History of Santa&nbsp;will shortly be available as an audiobook.

“I’ve always found the story of Santa Claus magical and enchanting,” explained Hammond. “I became even more fascinated when we were gifted the Santas Around The World exhibit more than a decade ago. Since that time, I’ve become an avid reader and researcher of all things Santa Claus. These books are the result of my desire to learn more about his legend as well as my desire to tell people about our wonderful Santas exhibit.”

Santas Around the World is a multicultural collection of 25 life-sized international Santas crafted by local artist and sculptor Loretta Miller. The exhibit was donated to the Rosewood Roots &amp; Wings Foundation by the Santa Committee in 2011, after being moved to various locations around Great Bend. Since that time, the exhibit has been showcased at its current location, 1223 Main Street, downtown Great Bend.

Hammond’s first book,&nbsp;The History of Santa Claus,&nbsp;chronicles how Santa Claus evolved from mythology and real people into the contemporary jolly old elf we know today. More specifically, she traces the evolution of Santa from Bishop Nicholas of Myra to his later incarnations in America and Europe: Saint Nicholas, Sinterklaas, Samichlaus, Father Christmas, Grandfather Frost, Santa Claus, and many others.

In her second book,&nbsp;Santas Around the World,&nbsp;Hammond provides the history of the 25 Santas (country by country and with beautiful color renderings) that are featured in the Great Bend exhibit. The book explains the differences and similarities of these “cultural Santas,” and details how and why the garb, names, and traditions of Santa evolved differently, while retaining the basic elements of the figure commonly called Saint Nick.

Santas Around the World also pays tribute to artist Loretta Miller’s creative inspiration, making each Christmas holiday a special time of the year for Rosewood and the Great Bend community.

“The Santas in our exhibit are exquisite pieces created by a wonderfully gifted artist,” Hammond said. “I want as many people as possible to know what an amazing exhibit we have in our town. I hope that my books will create a ripple effect among readers so that they can share both the history and traditions of Santa, as well as the unique story behind the creation of our Winter Wonderland exhibit.”

A group of Cottonwood – Barton 4-H youth recently participated in 4-H Horse Panorama in Salina. The 4-H Horse Panorama encourages young people to develop knowledge of equine-related subject matter. The contests develop alertness, self-confidence, and knowledge in a competitive setting, surrounded by an attitude of friendliness and fairness. The educational experience is great for both the participant and&nbsp;spectator.

Barton Community College’s Center for Adult Education will soon begin another nine-week session of classes. However, orientation days are required before starting the classes. Students must attend all orientation days in-person, which will be held from 1-4 p.m. on March. 4-7. The Center for Adult Education is located at 1025 Main Street in Great Bend.

The City of Great Bend is requesting bid quotes for improvements to Brit
Spaugh Park. The bid process was opened this week and will remain open until
March 7. The project calls for a basketball court, four pickleball courts, two
mini soccer pitches, playground and a restroom facility on the south side of
the park.

construction documents that divides the work for possible phases.


"The bold line on the documents...everything to the north of that and above that will be our base bid," said Burns. "Everything below that, which will include the basketball courts, shelters, mini pitch courts, pickleball and onsite parking will be alternate pricing. We'll give you options and take a look at it."

Great Bend is estimating the complete project could cost $2.1 million. The .15%
quality of life sales tax will contribute funds to the project, but the tax is
expected to generate $635,000 in the 2024 budget. While the Great Bend
Recreation Commission and Harms Trust have pledged financial assistance, Great
Bend does not have all of the funding needed.

Anderson said the city council will have alternative pricing for features like the
courts.


"It's an exciting project," said Anderson. "We've talked about the prices on those have changed just a little bit. As we get that bid in, we wanted to be able to give the council options."

The base bid will include the playground, picnic table area, restroom and
moving the horseshoe pits. The basketball court, soccer pitches and pickleball
courts could potentially be phased in as funds are available.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

In 2014, Barton County collected more than $1.3 million from the state through the Gas and Oil Valuation Depletion Trust Fund. The Kansas Legislative Policy Group (KLPG) helped counties recover those funds. The Barton County Commission opted not to rejoin the KLPG for 2024 in its first meeting of the year. Tuesday morning, County Administrator Matt Patzner brought membership back before the board.

"The KLPG serves as a policy and decision-making body establishing legislative priorities at its annual meeting, and providing speakers to address KLPG members about the important topics of the day," he said. "After denying membership earlier this year, the commission will reconsider that action."

The board originally voted against the $5,471 membership fee because the county joined the Kansas Natural Resources Coalition (KNRC) and felt both resources would be repetitive. Commission Chair Barb Esfeld attended the KLPG's annual winter meeting in Topeka on Jan. 23 and thought more about the groups.

"We hesitated because the KNRC, we were thinking maybe they do some of the same things and didn't want to spend the money if we didn't have to," she said. "The Legislative Policy Group really focuses on overall Kansas legislation, small counties, particularly out here, west."

The board voted 5-0 to join the KLPG for 2024. To demonstrate the value KLPG can bring to the table, Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson did some quick math: the funds recovered in 2014 would pay the annual membership fee to the group for more than 180 years. The KLPG serves 33 counties in western and central Kansas.

Barton County reconsiders annual membership to legislative group

Why on earth are Kansas Legislators seeking to ban Ranked Choice Voting (RCV)?

Sponsored by Senator Chase Blasi of Wichita, Senate Bill 368 would prohibit this practice, which is becoming increasingly popular in many U.S. cities and states.&nbsp; In a recent hearing, the senate heard conflicting testimony.&nbsp; Proponents argue that RCV is a better way to select the voters’ true preferences, while opponents dismiss it as confusing.&nbsp; The bill is specifically targeted at Kansas cities and counties– yet another state attempt to usurp power from its localities for no clear reason.

Last year, the Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee considered a bill that would have authorized RCV.&nbsp; Most likely, this is because Republicans on the committee believe that RCV might well have led to the election of Republican Derek Schmidt to the governorship in 2022, instead of Governor Laura Kelly being re-elected.&nbsp;&nbsp;

RCV is one of many alternative voting systems which can better-represent the preferences of voters.&nbsp; Kansas currently uses the plurality system for most offices.&nbsp; A candidate getting the most votes wins a race, even if their vote totals fall short of a majority.&nbsp; For example, in 2022 Kelly won 49.5% of the vote, Schmidt won 47.4%,&nbsp; Independent Dennis Pyle won 2%, and Libertarian Seth Cordell won 1.1%. The votes for Pyle and Cordell were essentially “wasted” votes, a derogatory term often used to discourage votes from supporting Independent and third party candidates.&nbsp; Imagine if each Pyle and Cordell supporter could have cast a “backup” vote in the event that their candidate did not get enough votes to win.

This is how RCV works.&nbsp; While it is new to many Americans, it is not complicated.&nbsp; Voters simply rank their choices in order.&nbsp; If a candidate does not have any chance of winning, their voters’ votes are re-cast for their second choices.&nbsp; Additional choices may be taken into account, depending on circumstances.&nbsp; Anyone who has ever made a list putting priorities in order has already done this–just not at the ballot box.&nbsp; As with the example above, the primary benefit of RCV is to allow voters to back Independent and third party candidates without the fear that they are casting “wasted” votes.&nbsp; No city in Kansas has RCV, but the Kansas Democratic Party has used it in their presidential primaries and caucuses since 2020.

The plurality method does a poor job of translating voters’ preferences into policy.&nbsp; Most state house, state senate and Congressional districts are uncompetitive between the two parties, so candidates need only placate their party base in order to avoid being “primaried.”&nbsp; This pushes the parties toward their respective extremes. Third-party and Independent candidates serve primarily as “spoilers” for the major parties, not serious alternatives for frustrated voters. Other alternatives worth exploring include approval voting, in which voters may vote for as many candidates as they choose, and proportional representation, in which seats are divided up in proportion to the percentage of votes cast for the parties.&nbsp; Political science studies confirm that these alternatives often do a far better job of matching election results to voters’ true desires.&nbsp; For example, in 2021 the City of St. Louis held its first mayoral election with approval voting, and it went fine.&nbsp; The new system helped to break down the city’s notorious, racially-divided voting behavior.&nbsp; RCV is also proving popular statewide in Maine and Alaska.

It would be foolish to preemptively ban a reform that is showing real promise in other states.&nbsp; RCV deserves a second look here in Kansas.

INSIGHT KANSAS: Who’s afraid of ranked choice voting?

At Monday’s Great Bend City Council meeting, city officials announced
over the past couple of weeks city crews have replaced several bulbs in the
street lights downtown with LED lights. The primary focus was changing the
lights along Main Street and around the courthouse square. 

Public Works
Director Jason Cauley said more than 100 bulbs were upgraded.


"Replacing the lights to these LEDs has definitely has given up a nice uniform look," said Cauley. "Previously, you would have some LEDs and some yellow-tinted lights. It has improved the overall aesthetic look."

Along with a more uniform look from the light tint, Cauley said the city will
see a cost savings from the LED lights.


Generally, LED streetlights have a longer lifespan and require less
maintenance. These lights can emit the same amount of light but also consume
less energy compared to traditional streetlights.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Ellinwood High School winter homecoming candidates

The Great Bend City Council approved a $169,600 bid for the removal and
replacement of a damaged driveway at Fire Station #2, on west 10th Street. The project will add a
new concrete drive adjacent to the training tower and burn building. 

Great Bend
Assistant City Administrator Logan Burns said the 14 bids were narrowed down
to three local contractors and the low bidder.


"In total, on the east, west and south sides, it's going to consist of approximately 16,000 square feet of concrete," said Burns. "We also have an entrance into one of our training grounds of approximately 6,000 square feet that's included."

With each bid meeting the city’s specifications, staff used their procurement
policy to identify a local contractor within the 5% allowable difference. Stone
Sand Company was $1,780 higher than the low bid.


Burns said the city has been saving year end transfers for this project since
2018.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend chooses local contractor for concrete work

Athletic directors from the five Western Athletic Conference schools, including Great Bend High School, meet on the first Wednesday of each month in Dodge City. A big topic of discussion at the Feb. 7 meeting was the league-wide adoption of the shot clock for the 2024-25 basketball season. GBHS Activities Director Matt Westerhaus said all five schools agreed to implement the shot clock next year.

"We'll just see how it plays out," he said. "I'm excited to see how it impacts the game because we've never had the opportunity to at least try it. This is just the initial period to see what are the pros and cons, and see where it goes from there."

Last month, the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) announced a trial basis for the upcoming season for a 35-second shot clock, which has never before been implemented at the high school level in the state. All high schools can choose to use the clock, but once implemented, but must be used for all varsity games at that school. Each WAC school plays eight league games, and with home games added, most GBHS games next year will feature a shot clock.

"I think it's good," Westerhaus said. "That way it's not bouncing back and forth each night. Some schools that come play us who are potentially lower-classification schools, it might be a little different situation for them prepping for playing under a shot clock at Great Bend High School."

Westerhaus expects expenses of around $5,000 to purchase and operate wireless shot clocks and red lighting around the backboards. A few table workers will likely be trained on how to operate the clock and when to reset it.

"There will be some adjustment, I'm sure early, just because it's going to be new," said Westerhaus. "That will be an adjustment on the officials' side, the table workers' side, coach's side, players' side, and fans' side."

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), 27 states now use shot clocks in some capacity. A group of athletic directors from Kansas visited Iowa, one of the first states to implement shot clocks. 

"On a typical game night, they were able to see it implemented in sub-varsity and varsity contests," Westerhaus said. "The Iowa folks gave us some guidelines they follow in their state organization, so I'm assuming we will see some similar guidelines put out by KSHSAA that we will all follow."

The KSHSAA pilot will require participating schools to use current NFHS rules regarding the clock, but have yet to take into consideration things like the running clock in the fourth quarter when one sides gains an advantage of at least 30 points.

Part of the KSHSAA pilot requires schools with shot clocks to notify all opposing schools of the change prior to the start of the season. Participating schools must also complete a short survey after each home game.  </figure>By MIKE COURSON Great Bend PostAthletic directors from the five Western Athletic Conference schools, including Great Bend High School, meet on the first Wednesday of each month in Dodge City. A big topic of discussion at the Feb. 7 meeting was the league-wide adoption of the shot clock for the 2024-25 basketball season. GBHS Activities Director Matt Westerhaus said all five schools agreed to implement the shot clock next year."We'll just see how it plays out," he said. "I'm excited to see how it impacts the game because we've never had the opportunity to at least try it. This is just the initial period to see what are the pros and cons, and see where it goes from there."Last month, the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) announced a trial basis for the upcoming season for a 35-second shot clock, which has never before been implemented at the high school level in the state. All high schools can choose to use the clock, but once implemented, but must be used for all varsity games at that school. Each WAC school plays eight league games, and with home games added, most GBHS games next year will feature a shot clock."I think it's good," Westerhaus said. "That way it's not bouncing back and forth each night. Some schools that come play us who are potentially lower-classification schools, it might be a little different situation for them prepping for playing under a shot clock at Great Bend High School."Westerhaus expects expenses of around $5,000 to purchase and operate wireless shot clocks and red lighting around the backboards. A few table workers will likely be trained on how to operate the clock and when to reset it."There will be some adjustment, I'm sure early, just because it's going to be new," said Westerhaus. "That will be an adjustment on the officials' side, the table workers' side, coach's side, players' side, and fans' side."According to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), 27 states now use shot clocks in some capacity. A group of athletic directors from Kansas visited Iowa, one of the first states to implement shot clocks. "On a typical game night, they were able to see it implemented in sub-varsity and varsity contests," Westerhaus said. "The Iowa folks gave us some guidelines they follow in their state organization, so I'm assuming we will see some similar guidelines put out by KSHSAA that we will all follow."The KSHSAA pilot will require participating schools to use current NFHS rules regarding the clock, but have yet to take into consideration things like the running clock in the fourth quarter when one sides gains an advantage of at least 30 points.Part of the KSHSAA pilot requires schools with shot clocks to notify all opposing schools of the change prior to the start of the season. Participating schools must also complete a short survey after each home game. Shot clocks will not be used in any postseason games next season though the KSHSAA Executive Board will consider playoff use following the 2024-25 season.

Acciona Energy approached the Barton County Commission in January 2023
about placing a solar farm to the northeast of Great Bend. The proposed location
includes property within three miles of Great Bend, so City Administrator Brandon
Anderson said Acciona will present to the city council during the Feb. 20 meeting. 

"We also have to come up with similar regulations for the three miles that surround Great Bend," said Anderson. "They're going to pitch that project our way. I think this will be first that they've spoken to city council. Obviously, this has been a discussion for quite some time with the county."

A moratorium on commercial solar development in the county has been extended
through March 31 to give the Planning Commission time to craft
solar regulations.

City of Great Bend to get involved in solar farm discussion

Debt is money you owe to another person or business. If you use loans, credit cards or behind on bills, that is debt. Debt can be complicated because sometimes you hear the terms good debt vs. bad debt. When those terms are used it is generally described as “good debt” being something that can help you reach your goals or make investments such as borrowing to further education, buy transportation or a home. Some consider other types of loans, credit cards or pawn loans “bad debt”. However, you look at it, debt always carries risk. When you owe money to someone else it also costs you money in the form of interest.

Typically, home loans and student loan debt have a smaller interest rate. However, credit cards, car loans, payday loans or auto title loans usually have much high interest rates that make it difficult to pay off the debt and carry significantly more risk. Avoiding these types of debt will be important. Alternatives to short term loans could be to negotiate for more time to pay, make sure this is a need and not a want, use lower interest rate credit cards or loans from a bank or credit union, use your own emergency fund savings, borrow from a friend or family member.

Determining your debt to income can also help you do a check on the overall health of your finances. To calculate your debt to income ratio, add your total monthly debt payment together then divide by your gross monthly income. Multiply by 100 to calculate your current debt to income ratio. Consider maintaining a debt to income ratio for all debts of 36% or less.

If that percentage is higher than 36% or higher than you would like it to be consider using a debt action plan to reduce your debt. There are a couple of strategies you can use. One method is listing your smallest debt to your largest debt and pay off the smallest ones first. The pro to this is it can be very motivating to see debt quickly disappear. The con to this method is if the large debts have large interest rates then you are paying a lot in interest. The second method is to pay highest interest rate debt first and end with your lowest interest rate. This will save you money but it also might be a long and daunting process. Since finances have a big emotional part to them staying motivated might be the key!

Whatever debt you have consider paying it off and creating an emergency fund so you can be your own bank rather than relying on debt. It might just lower your stress level!
