Big toys are expensive but sometimes necessary. The Barton County Road and Bridge Department currently owns four brooms used to sweep county blacktops. Tuesday morning, Director Darren Williams asked the board of commissioners to replace a 2002 Broce Broom with 3,515 hours of service. The county received two bids for the replacement. 

"I'm recommending we go with the Broce Broom, the low bid on this," Williams said. "They're both made in Kansas and they're both quality brooms."

The Broce Broom from GW Van Keppel will cost the county $73,900, or almost $6,000 less than the other bid. The 8-foot brooms are used to sweep county blacktops after seal work is done so stripers can stripe the road. 

"Three hundred eight-nine miles we take care of," said Williams. "We do about 100 miles of sealing each year. You're looking at going down the road five or six times a day, just a mile at a time. They get a lot of use."

All four of the county's current brooms are well-used, and the replacement of the 2002 broom will replace the oldest of the group. The old broom will be kept for parts.

Dog park separation almost complete in Great Bend

The Kansas Department of Revenue revealed today the next design of the Kansas personalized license plate. Five designs were put up for public vote online earlier this month. After more than 30,000 votes were cast, Kansans across the state chose the design showcasing the iconic Flint Hills as the next personalized license plate design. The Flint Hills design emerged as the clear favorite, receiving over 56% of the vote.

“We are excited to reveal the next Kansas personalized plate design and will now work to get the design ready for production and for Kansans to purchase in 2025,”&nbsp;KDOR Division of Vehicles Director David Harper said.

When the new design is available, Kansans can visit their local county treasurer’s office to purchase the new plate for $45.50.

The “Powering the Future” personalized plate design will no longer be available after Jan. 1, 2025. Kansans, who currently have this design, must replace their plate during their next renewal period to keep their personalized plate text.

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (8/9 - 8/11)

Excitement is building for the upcoming Great Bend High School Panther football and basketball seasons. A trio of veterans are returning to the booth to bring that action to radio listeners on B 104.3 The Point. Eagle Media recently announced that Mike Hesher will take on play-by-play duties for the Panther football team this fall with former Panther quarterback Shawn Behr returning as his color man. Steve Webster will handle play-by-play for the Panther basketball teams this winter. Behr is excited to be back in the booth after working alongside Randy Goering for six years.

"I had a long spell where I didn't do it and I listened," Behr said. "Jason Perry was the color guy and did a great job. Now, it's really screaming at me because, honestly, I get to call the games for the kids that my daughter runs around with. There's a lot of knowledge of the players on a personal level."

Hesher has several years of television and radio experience, most recently calling Hoisington Cardinal basketball games and hosting 1590 KVGB/95.5 FM's daily "Trading Post" program. 

"I'm excited for a number of reasons," said Hesher. "Number one, there is a lot of excitement for GBHS football, with several outstanding upperclassmen returning from the playoff team of one year ago. Second is the chance to work with Shawn Behr in the broadcast booth. He brings instant credibility to the booth, and I'm expecting it will be a football seminar every Friday night."

Behr, a 1991 GBHS graduate, was a standout football and basketball player at the school. He was recently inducted into the Fort Hays State University Tiger Hall of Fame after quarterbacking the football team to an 8-2-2 record in 1995. He later played professional football in Helsinki, Finland. He said the experience helps him see the game in its entirety.

"Tunnel vision lets you see one little thing," he said, "but actually, when you are able to see a lot of things going on at once, it helps you give a better picture or draw a better understanding of the play or the game itself."

Webster has several years of experience calling basketball games for the Kansas State University women and Fort Hays State University. He also called games for the Wichita Wranglers in 2006, and was inducted into the FHSU Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. In recent years, he has called games for Hoisington High School and Great Bend High School, and is now the host of KVGB's "Sports Day" and "AM Great Bend Show."

Coming off a summer hiatus, "Sports Day" returns to the airwaves Aug. 19 on 1590 KVGB/95.5 FM daily from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Webster, Hesher, and Mike Courson will again discuss all the latest sports headlines and speak with the area athletes and coaches making those headlines.

When the two Clouded Leopards arrived to the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo
last September, staff was not fully aware of the behavioral issues of the two
cats. The leopards are also a successful breeding pair, but the most recent
pregnancy in Great Bend resulted in a stillborn, and Zoo Curator Ashley Burdick
said the staff was not able to revive the cub.


"They don't process emotions the same way that we do, but they're still having some emotions and you can see things affect them," said Burdick. "We spend so much time with them, especially those leopards. My staff and I have been there at three in the morning some days to make sure they're doing okay."

The female leopard arrived with a wound that would not heal because the animal
kept ripping out the sutures. Separated to let the wound heal, the animals were
brought together last January. As aggressive breeders, the female received two
punctures on her tail once reunited with the male. 

On loan from Florida, the
two are still getting acclimated in Great Bend.


"You definitely start to learn the individuals and mannerisms," said Burdick. "You can tell whether they're not feeling well or something is going on. There's definitely a lot more there than them just being an animal."

Barricades are still up ahead of the leopards’ exhibit to give the cats some
distance from visitors.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Monday's weather

The Amber Meadows subdivision in Great Bend has slowly added more
housing over the years. Just north of Veterans Memorial Park, at the 24th
Street and McKinley Street intersection, the subdivision has three more
buildable lots that sit vacant. 

Earlier this year, City of Great Bend officials
met with individuals in ownership of the lots. Those owners deeded the
properties back to the city. 
Recently resigned Great Bend City Administrator Brandon Anderson said at last
week’s city council meeting that there was no interest from the public to build
on the open lots.

housing over the years. Just north of Veterans Memorial Park, at the 24th
Street and McKinley Street intersection, the subdivision has three more
buildable lots that sit vacant. Earlier this year, City of Great Bend officials
met with individuals in ownership of the lots. Those owners deeded the
properties back to the city. 
Recently resigned Great Bend City Administrator Brandon Anderson said at last
week’s city council meeting that there was no interest from the public to build
on the open lots.

Mr. Popp will present a quotation and request approval to purchase four additional units (including a 5-year maintenance program), five alarmed wall cabinets, and three 3D wall AED signs for increased visibility of the units. The quote for these items is $10,535.00. The administration will request board approval.

&nbsp; &nbsp;G. Approval of K-6 Lunch Tables &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The elementary school gymnasiums serve as dual-purpose areas for physical education and as student lunch rooms. After meals are served, custodial staff folds and stores tables to allow room for PE classes. However, the current modular tables are aged and have become increasingly difficult to move and store effectively while not in use. To maintain safety for students and staff, Mr. Popp will discuss replacing 60 tables and will present a proposal to the board.

&nbsp; &nbsp;H. Fleet Management Proposal &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Director of Transportation Cody Schmidt will discuss the current situation of aging support service vehicles and discuss a lease program proposal. The administration will present information and make a recommendation.

drought monitor report as of Tuesday, August 6 shows even more deterioration.&nbsp; The percentage of the state totally out of
dry conditions decreased to only 7%.&nbsp; The
amount of the state abnormally dry increased to 96%, moderate drought to 47%
drought.&nbsp; Barton County and the area is unchanged
in moderate to severe drought.&nbsp; The six
to ten-day outlook (August 13 to 17) indicates a 60 to 70% chance of likely above
normal temperatures and normal to slightly above normal for precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (August 15
to 21) indicates a 50 to 60% chance of likely above normal temperatures and normal
for precipitation.&nbsp; Definitely what we
don’t need for summer crops and upcoming wheat planting.

let’s discuss the soon to be planted 2025 wheat crop.&nbsp; Stacy Campbell has been sharing the
information from K-State Research &amp; Extension regarding weed control and
volunteer wheat’s importance in controlling Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus.&nbsp; So, there isn’t a need to cover these items.&nbsp; Here, we’ll take a more general view of what
a producer should be looking as prior to planting.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; What
is the moisture outlook heading into wheat planting?&nbsp; As of now the long-term outlook isn’t
good.&nbsp; We are still in moderate to severe
drought in our area and have little if any subsoil moisture.&nbsp; Whatever acreage decided upon, how do you
conserve as much moisture as possible, especially any rains.&nbsp; This means eliminating as mush tillage as
possible and controlling weeds.&nbsp; And
leave as much residue as possible to mediate soil temperatures and minimize
soil moisture loss.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Input
costs and breakeven prices aren’t favorable.&nbsp;
As of today, the wheat market is bearish.&nbsp; Fertilizer costs, nitrogen and phosphorus
especially, are high.&nbsp; Exports of hard
red winter wheat aren’t where they need to be.&nbsp;
Australia’s upcoming wheat crop looks good.&nbsp; Russia is dumping wheat onto the market.&nbsp; Combine a sketchy precipitation outlook with
low prices and how much should a producer invest in the 2025 wheat crop.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If
planting wheat, spend a little time and money on soil testing, especially pH
and phosphorus.&nbsp; And it won’t hurt to
take a profile nitrogen test to avoid spending unnecessary money on fall
nitrogen.&nbsp; Especially those farming
sandier soils, a profile sulfur test is a good idea.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Unless
planning on grazing, it’s a good idea to apply an insecticide and fungicide to
seed.&nbsp; If planting saved seed, it should
be cleaned and that’s a good time to apply seed treatments.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Normally,
it’s recommended to follow what used to be termed the fly-free date when
planting wheat unless planning on fall grazing.&nbsp;

you are concerned about Hessian fly, select a resistant variety.

Barton Ag Instructor Dr. Vic Martin - The 2025 Wheat Crop

The name is changing but the service is not. Sandra Burton has 25 years of experience as a Licensed Massage Therapist. When she first came to Kansas, she operated as Sunflower Massage. The Kansas Department of Agriculture is sharing notice that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered the emergency suspension of all registrations of pesticide products containing the active ingredient dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate (DCPA). EPA previously approved registrations for pesticide products containing DCPA to control weeds in both agricultural and non-agricultural sites, including non-residential turf sites, nursery stock and produce.

This emergency suspension is a result of EPA’s determination that DCPA is an imminent health hazard, in particular for babies whose mothers were exposed to DCPA during pregnancy. EPA’s determination that led to the emergency suspension comes as a result of the registration review process in which registered pesticides are periodically evaluated to ensure they cause no unreasonable adverse effects on human health or the environment. The emergency suspension is effective immediately, and prohibits the continued sale, distribution and use of any pesticide products containing DCPA.&nbsp;

Dacthal Flowable Herbicide, (EPA Registration Number 5481-487) is the only pesticide product containing DCPA which had been approved for use in Kansas. Although most usage of this product was likely in commercial operations, it is possible that individual consumers may have purchased it as a general use product. If you are in possession of Dacthal Flowable Herbicide, you are advised to cease use of that product and contact the manufacturer for details on the return procedure. Retail or wholesale businesses must remove the products from their sales inventory and contact the manufacturer for details on the return procedure. Do not dispose of the product by any means until you are provided with instructions by the manufacturer.

Great Bend Chamber responds to BMI closure & job losses

The Barton Community College Foundation Board has chosen Barry and Monica Bowers to receive the prestigious “Old Bill Honorarium” at the 45th Annual Big Benefit Auction.

The event, which marks the Sapphire Anniversary of the auction, will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 24 at the Great Bend Events Center. This honorarium allows auction attendees to contribute to a scholarship in the Bowers' name to be awarded for the 2025-26 academic year.

Barry and Monica's journey with Barton Community College began when they met as students. Their connection to the college has only deepened over the years. Barry's service on the Foundation board from 2018-2021 reinforced his dedication to the institution.

“Sometimes we forget the size of the impact that the Barton Foundation has,” Barry said. “I knew that they gave scholarships but did not realize the magnitude until I served and got more involved. The Foundation awards an amazing number of scholarships each year to hundreds of students, and they, in turn, make an impact locally, all over the nation, and across the world.”

Monica, inspired by her own experiences, sees the impact of the College and Foundation as an ever-turning wheel, much like the design of the Barton County campus.

“As we have been served, we serve and as we have been loved, we love,” Monica said. “With education and opportunity, these students have the chance to serve, connect, and share their talent with our community. We feel that it is our responsibility to serve and support the College because it benefits our entire community.”

Barton Executive Director of Institutional Advancement Lindsey Bogner expressed the Foundation’s excitement in honoring the Bowers for their years of positive influence and involvement.

“Barry and Monica are people that care about our community,” she said. “They have dedicated their lives to service, and we are honored to recognize them for their exemplary support of Barton and our students.”

Barry hopes the Old Bill Honorarium will inspire future generations to support the community.

“I remember being inspired by the people being recognized in the past as great community leaders, and I respected them,” he said. “I really enjoy seeing younger generations today getting involved, and I realize that I am the older generation now. I can only hope that I can be their inspiration to carry on with this support the same way I was inspired by those before me.”

About the Old Bill Honorarium In 1981, the Claflin Fire Department donated a stuffed buffalo head to the Foundation auction. This unique item was christened as “Old Bill” and quickly became a mainstay of this annual event: sold, donated back, and resold each year. In 2002, Old Bill the buffalo was retired, and a new tradition was born, honoring loyal supporters and donors to the Barton Community College Foundation through the Old Bill Honorarium. To date, Old Bill has netted nearly $186,000 in support of academic scholarships.

K-State research breaks down wheat variety performance for dual-purpose systems

As Kansas farmers pour over field trial data to select which varieties to plant this fall, new guidance is available for those considering adding or expanding fall grazing on wheat acres. K-State Research and Extension recently released the results of trials for 16 wheat varieties for performance in dual-purpose systems where wheat is grown for both forage and grain production.&nbsp;

Logically, the traits needed for a wheat variety to succeed in a dual-purpose system differ from programs focused solely on grain production. These performance trials evaluated commonly understood factors of fall grazing like the date of the first hollow stem as well as fall forage yield, plant height, grain yield and test weight.&nbsp;

To do so, K-State researchers planted three trials in the South Central Experiment Field near Hutchinson. One trial followed grain-only management practices, while the other two trials simulated dual-purpose management. These trials included an earlier planting date with a higher seeding rate and increased nitrogen applications.&nbsp;

The first dual-purpose trial assessed forage yield and date of the first hollow stem. Fall forage production depends on variety selection, environmental factors&nbsp;-—&nbsp;temperature and precipitation&nbsp;-—&nbsp;and management decisions&nbsp;-—&nbsp;planting date, seeding rate and nitrogen application rate.&nbsp;

To measure forage yield, researchers hand-clipped and dried samples before weighing and measuring the remaining dry matter. The team found significant statistical differences in fall forage production between the tested varieties, ranging from 871 to 1,969 pounds of dry matter per acre. Eleven of the 16 varieties were considered high-yielding&nbsp;-—&nbsp;1,370 to 1,969 pounds of dry matter per acre&nbsp;-—&nbsp;including KS Ahearn and KS Providence.&nbsp;

To balance the use of that forage potential with future grain yield potential, producers with a dual-purpose system use the date of the first hollow stem as an indicator of when to stop grazing. Grazing past that first hollow stem date can decrease yields by as much as one to five percent per day. While the appearance of the first hollow stem is driven by decreasing temperatures and day length, individual varieties can differ by up to 15 to 20 days.&nbsp;

Researchers measured the first hollow stem by splitting 10 primary stems from each plot one or two times per week, stopping when all measured stems had 1.5 centimeters of hollow stem below the developing wheat head. Results were reported in day-of-year format with the average occurrence of the first hollow stem on day 76 or March 17. All the studied varieties reached the first hollow stem within an 11-day window, with KS Providence being the latest variety to achieve the first hollow stem at day 83.&nbsp;

After producers stop grazing, their focus turns to maximizing grain production. The second dual-purpose trial explored the penalties for grazing wheat fields come harvest.&nbsp;

The penalty for varieties averaged from 6.9 to 19.7 bushels per acre with the highest-yielding group including AR Iron Eagle 22AX, CP7017AX, Guardian, Golden Hawk and WB4347.&nbsp;Test weights also varied between varieties, ranging from 55.1 to 62.7 pounds per bushel in the grain-only system to 49.5 to 67.1 pounds per bushel in the dual-purpose trial. Guardian ranked as the highest test weight in both systems, whereas AP Sunbird (experimental) ranked highest in the grain-only trial and WB4347 took the top spot in the dual-purpose system.&nbsp;Researchers noted that weather conditions&nbsp;-—&nbsp;fall moisture and a dry spring&nbsp;-—&nbsp;also impacted final grain yields and test weights.&nbsp;“The weather conditions&nbsp;–—&nbsp;characterized by enough moisture for forage production followed by drought conditions during the spring&nbsp;–—&nbsp;likely worsened the effects of grazing since the larger crop likely used more water early in the season and had no moisture to recover later in the spring,” the publication noted.&nbsp;Overall, the K-State evaluation provides valuable insights for producers looking to balance needs for additional forage with the goal of a successful summer harvest.
