Hoisington's Labor Day Celebration is now less than two weeks away. The fun will begin on Friday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. with the Thunder in the Wetlands Go Kart Nationals and the Community BBQ and Beer Garden, both at Bicentennial Park. Hoisington Chamber Director Karen Baldyga said that Friday is also the deadline for entering a float in the Labor Day Parade.

"This year we're celebrating the 128th Annual Labor Day Parade in Hoisington," she said. "It is one of the largest parades in all of Kansas. This year, we have a new contest called the mini-float contest. It's open to anyone who has a golf cart or a UTV that would like to decorate it."

Registration for the mini-float contest is $10, and all money collected will be awarded to the top three winners. The parade will again feature a contest for large floats with the winner receiving $250.&nbsp;

Hoisington's Main Street will be closed from 3 p.m. Sunday to 3 p.m. Monday. That will allow for Sunday's Street Dance beginning at 8 p.m. Jadynce Jean will be followed by Homebrew for the musical entertainment. Food vendors will be available beginning around 6 pm. Admission is $10 for anyone 21 years of age or older, $5 for anyone under 21, and free for children four years of age or younger. Admission to the Street Dance or tickets for the beer garden must be purchased with cash.

"We will have water and pop as well," Baldyga said. "This year, we're adding a few different flavors to the beer so we'll have maybe a couple seltzers or like a margarita."

A hamburger feed at the Hoisington Columbus Club runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Labor Day, and the Craven Cardinal Car Show begins at 12:30 p.m. at the City Building, 109 E. 1st Street.

Float entries still being accepted for 128th Hoisington Labor Day Parade

What began as an urgent effort to cover emergency vet bills, quickly blossomed into a thriving business. The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce proudly celebrated the inspiring journey of Freaking Delicious Cheesecake Company with a Ribbon Cutting on Thursday, August 19th, at 10:30 am. The event marked not only the company’s official membership with the Chamber but also the exciting expansion of its services, featuring the debut of a brand-new Cheesecake Trailer.

In front of the Chamber office, owner Allie Cartwright shared her latest creation—cheesecake-stuffed cookies—delighting attendees with samples straight from her new mobile cheesecake unit.

The story of Freaking Delicious Cheesecake Company is one of perseverance, creativity, and a bit of serendipity. In August 2022, when Allie’s dog needed emergency surgery, she found herself in a bind and offered homemade cheesecakes to friends in exchange for financial help with the vet bills. To her surprise, the cheesecakes sparked a wave of demand, as friends shared them with others, and soon, complete strangers were reaching out with requests for more.

Freaking Delicious Cheesecake Company was up and running within six months, and what she thought would be a part-time hobby ended up becoming a full-time operation.

Allie bakes her cheesecakes out of The Historic Wolf Hotel kitchen, offering a variety of options, including sweet, savory, and sugar-free varieties. Her website currently boasts 38 unique flavors, with seasonal offerings keeping things fresh and exciting for customers.

The addition of the Cheesecake Trailer marks a significant milestone in the company’s growth, enabling Allie to bring her beloved spin on cheesecakes to local events and festivals. Items she offers from the trailer include frozen cheesecake on a stick, cheesecake parfaits, cheesecake bites with toppings, and cheesecake-stuffed cookies.

Baking hundreds of cheesecakes each month, Freaking Delicious Cheesecake Company has quickly become a popular name in the community. And fittingly, the cheesecakes have gained a reputation for being just as 'freaking delicious' as the name suggests.

Recently featured on KSN’s Good Day Kansas on August 16th, Allie’s cheesecakes have gained even more recognition. While the business does not have a storefront, each cheesecake is made fresh to order, with delivery available within a 25-mile radius of Ellinwood for a small fee.

In addition to direct orders, Freaking Delicious Cheesecake has made its way onto the menu at The Page in Great Bend, and her 9” frozen cheesecakes are also available for purchase at the Ellinwood Packing Plant.

PRATT COUNTY —The Pratt County Sheriff reported 84-year-old Larry Schmidt, reported missing early Tuesday has been located.&nbsp; The sheriff's office reported no additional details.

The Pratt County Sheriff’s Office is looking for 84 year old Larry Schmidt, according to a social media report.&nbsp;

Schmidt went missing from Pratt night. He left Pratt going home to Stafford County but did not arrive.

 He was driving a silver Buick Park Ave with Kansas Tag 329DKS.

Pratt Co. Sheriff: Missing 84-year-old found

A proposed National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor (NIETC) continues to generate discussion in Central Kansas. Several hundred people attended an informational meeting in Larned last Thursday, and the Barton County Commission will host another informational meeting tonight at the Great Bend Events Center, 3111 10th Street. Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson provided a preview of tonight's discussion during Tuesday's regularly-scheduled meeting. The NIETC stems from one entity, Grain Belt Express, wanting to construct a transmission line from Dodge City 780 miles east to Indiana.

"The state of Kansas granted them public utility status, which also grants them eminent domain authority," Hutchinson said. "So now, you have a private company coming through with the best interest of the nation, not the best of Kansas. Don't confuse those two. This powerline doesn't stop anywhere in Kansas and provide energy here. It just goes through."

The Midwest-Plains corridor, as proposed, is five miles wide and is one of 10 proposed corridors around the nation. Hutchinson is opposed to the corridor and private companies getting access to federal dollars to build in the corridor.

"They go and meet with this farmer and say they want to put this 160-foot tower in your field," he said. "The size of these towers are the type that are maintained by helicopter. It's nothing we've ever seen before. It's larger than the tallest building in Great Bend, which is the High Rise."

It was revealed at the Larned meeting that 98 percent of landowners within the project proposed by Grain Belt Express have agreed to the project. Hutchinson said that could be a result of farmers having limited options against eminent domain. Commissioner Tricia Schlessiger also expressed her concern Tuesday morning.

"Coastal people want this project," she said. "It passed through at the federal level because they want our electricity and they need it for grid stability. They don't care if they come through your farm or house because they want our electricity."

County Counselor Patrick Hoffman reiterated that the county's hands may be tied to a large degree regarding the project, but officials will continue to do their due diligence.

"The county doesn't have zoning authority over the transmission line but years ago, when Grain Belt asked the commissions to enter into a road-use agreement, you guys chose not to because you were concerned about the project," he said.

Representatives from the offices of Sen. Roger Marshall, Sen. Jerry Moran, and Rep. Tracey Mann are expected to attend tonight's meeting at the Events Center. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. and will be livestreamed. Those using the livestream will not be able to join the live discussion.

Barton Commission speaks transmission corridor; event to be livestreamed

For me, not many things beat the rejuvenation of a good night's sleep. I feel alert, focused, and ready to tackle the day. On the other hand, restless nights lead to sluggish mornings and dull afternoons.

It’s amazing how sleep quality directly affects quality of life, and there’s reason for it. Sleep plays an important role in how the entire body functions! Specifically, it makes a big impact on brain health, immune function, metabolism, mood, and heart health:

· Learning and memory- During sleep, the brain stores away memories, and it clears plaque that is associated with Alzheimer’s Disease.

· Illness- While your mind rests during sleep, your immune system works hard. Antibodies and cytokines that fight infection and viruses are produced during sleep.

· Hormone alterations- Sleep deprivation can change hormone production. For example, insufficient sleep increases cortisol levels and raises appetite. This can make weight management difficult. However, sufficient sleep supports healthy hormone production and also defends against irritability, inability to concentrate, and depression.

· Cardiovascular health- Getting enough sleep improves heart health. Sleep disorders are linked to hypertension, increased stress, and irregular heartbeat.

Research shows that people who consistently fail to get enough sleep are at an increased risk of chronic disease. Treating sleep as a priority, rather than a luxury, may be an important step in preventing many chronic conditions.

If you currently have difficulty sleeping, pay close attention to your sleeping habits. Here are a few recommendations to help you fall asleep and stay asleep:

· Get into the routine of going to bed at the same time each night and waking up at the same time each morning.

· Avoid large meals, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol before bedtime. Also, try not to exercise immediately before you sleep.

· Make your environment quiet, cool, dark, and relaxing. Keep technology out of reach.

As you know, sleep is vital for a healthy body. Plus, it simply makes you feel better. Good sleep doesn’t have to be a luxury. In fact, quality sleep should be a priority for your physical and mental health!

WINKEL: The role of sleep - make it a priority

Wheatland Electric Cooperative, Inc. (WEC) announced that the Pilot Club of Great Bend has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the WEC Sharing Success Fund. This grant will be used to help underwrite an upcoming autism workshop designed to educate teachers and families about available support and services for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

Scheduled for Oct. 4, the workshop titled “Making a Difference: Autism Across the Lifespan” helps raise awareness about crucial resources for those caring for and interacting with individuals on the autism spectrum as well as those diagnosed with ASD. The workshop is designed for those seeking guidance in navigating the challenges and opportunities associated with ASD. It will feature expert speakers and facilitators specializing in autism education and support services.

The Pilot Club of Great Bend is a local organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in their community. With a focus on encouraging brain safety and health, the Pilot Club strives to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those who care for others.

The Scott Community Foundation began formally accepting applications for grants from the WEC Sharing Success Fund from community-based organizations on December 1, 2012. Since then, the application process has been moved internally and is currently handled directly by WEC. This year, WEC and CoBank have once again each contributed $10,000 to the fund. The program will continue to run until the funds are exhausted. Since 2012, WEC’s Sharing Success Fund has made $165,000 available to community-based organizations and projects across their service territory.

This grant will be used to help underwrite an upcoming autism workshop designed to educate teachers and families about available support and services for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).Scheduled for Oct. 4, the workshop titled “Making a Difference: Autism Across the Lifespan” helps raise awareness about crucial resources for those caring for and interacting with individuals on the autism spectrum as well as those diagnosed with ASD. The workshop is designed for those seeking guidance in navigating the challenges and opportunities associated with ASD. It will feature expert speakers and facilitators specializing in autism education and support services.The Pilot Club of Great Bend is a local organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in their community. With a focus on encouraging brain safety and health, the Pilot Club strives to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those who care for others.The Scott Community Foundation began formally accepting applications for grants from the WEC Sharing Success Fund from community-based organizations on December 1, 2012. Since then, the application process has been moved internally and is currently handled directly by WEC. This year, WEC and CoBank have once again each contributed $10,000 to the fund. The program will continue to run until the funds are exhausted. Great Bend Rec RNR & Board meeting agenda (8/20)

When the rendering and location were revealed earlier this month of a $7
million innovation center to be built in Great Bend, many reactions were how
extravagant the facility was and curiosity on its actual purpose in the
community.


“One of the things that makes me cringe the most is when I hear ‘we can’t have
that because we’re in Barton County,’” said Great Bend Economic Development
Director Sara Arnberger. “I really wanted this center to be a beacon to show we
can do whatever we want right here in central Kansas. We want opportunities so
when people come and look at us they say ‘I can upscale, I can learn something
new.’ It does look extravagant and it’s supposed to.”


The Great Bend Innovation Center will be located at the 10th Street
and K-96 Highway intersection, in front of the recently opened Bright
Beginnings childcare center. With a $7 million price tag, the community center
is all grant and donation funded. Earlier this month, Arnberger mentioned in a
social media post that the project is approximately 75% funded.


“We have a little over $5.5 million raised for the project,” said Arnberger. “We
have some other grants that we are seeking to finish this project. It’s not coming
from the city or county. It’s coming from grant dollars.”


The Innovation Center received a $4.38 million state grant that will help
create the space for healthcare, education, childcare and entrepreneurship.

So what is in the Innovation Center and
how will it be used?

The center will contain a Fab Lab, or digital fabrication laboratory, to
provide users access to materials and technology to learn new skills and create
almost anything.


“It’s a maker’s space,” Arnberger added. “Just an example of some of the things
we have in this space…we have 3D printers and flight simulators. People can
learn how to be a pilot. That’s one of the shortages we have right now. We have
drones so you can do drone training.”


The center will also include plasma cutters, welders, wood working equipment and
commercial sewing machines.


“This will help you learn something new, add something to your business or
upscale to give yourself a new skill or training that you can take into the job
market. This does directly relate to entrepreneurship, workforce and just opportunity
in general.”


Further down the hall of the Innovation Center will be a commercial kitchen
space with multiple purposes. The kitchen will serve as a central kitchen for
existing childcare providers, the existing Bright Beginning childcare center
and future Advancing Barton County Childcare centers.


“This is not forced upon childcare providers,” Arnberger said. “It’s for any of
them that should need this service. We are working with a third-party company
that would run that central kitchen piece.”


The kitchen will also be available as an incubator space for start-up restaurant
businesses to use. A schedule will be provided to cooks to sign up to use the
kitchen for their services. Great Bend Economic Development has partnered with
several local entities, such as Kansas State Research and Extension, The
University of Kansas Health System and Barton Community College to make use of
these spaces, including cooking classes for the public.


Along with a kitchen, the Innovation Center will create an addition from Leafy
Green Farms, based out of Pittsburg, Kansas.
&nbsp;

“Stats are showing many Kansas farmers
where their next generation have decided they don’t want to continue the family
farm or ranch,” said Arnberger. “We have new people coming and saying ‘How do I
farm?’ or ‘What does this look like?’ Leafy Green Farms is a farm in a pod. You
can grow a myriad of things in this container. Users can pick what they’re
going to grow, grow it, harvest it and use it in the commercial kitchen or sell
it at a farmer’s market.”


Arnberger wanted to emphasize that youth will be a strong focus throughout the
Innovation Center, showcasing the possibilities for them.


“As the youth continue to grow and learn, we want them to know if they go away
and become an engineer or whatever they will become, there is a place for you
back in Barton County. We want to foster that learning spirit from the
beginning.”


To help foster that learning spirit, Economic Development has partnered with
area school districts to create learning curriculum carried out at the center.


For remote workers or students, there will be a computer lab available at the
center. The lab will be equipped with Apple Mac computers for anyone interested in
design software.


“The computers will consist of Adobe software so people have the ability to
grow and learn with that,” said Arnberger. “We will also be doing some language
learning on the computers and in-person classes…English to Spanish and Spanish
to English.”


With several medical and manufacturing shift workers in the Barton County area,
the need for after-hours and even overnight childcare services has surfaced. The
Innovation Center will include two childcare rooms.


“Having these childcare rooms across the street from the Bright Beginnings childcare
center makes sharing resources easier. There will also be a lot of parents
wanting to take advantage of the classes going on at Innovation Center after
work, this will give them a safe space for their children while they do that.”


Learning spaces, or conference rooms, will be available for meetings, Zoom
meetings or trainings. Other technology available will be a broadcast and
podcast studio.


“Marketing is a huge component to business these days, Arnberger said. “Video
marketing is huge. We want to have the tools and equipment available for the
community and business sector to produce those videos.”


The Economic Development employees will help staff the Innovation Center along
with the possibility of contributing partners assisting.
The center will be available after hours for entrepreneurs, business
professionals and community members to access.


“I hope everyone understands that this center is a stab at giving people of
Barton County the ability to innovate, create, learn something new, push their
business to new heights or to create a new business. We want to inspire the
youth of Barton County to come back. We do have exciting things. We want them
to know they’re supported.”


Arnberger hopes to have the Innovation Center constructed by the end of 2025.&nbsp;

To celebrate the start of a new academic year and new leadership, Barton Community College will host a "Meet the President" event from 4:30-6 p.m. Aug. 28 at Dry Lake Brewing in Great Bend.

This will be the first stop in a series of similar events across Barton County and the College’s service area. The event will allow community members, local leaders, and alumni to meet and engage with Barton President Dr. Marcus Garstecki. The setting will allow for open discussion with brief comments from the president at 5:30 p.m.

press release Monday on the proper usage of the site south of town. Permitted
by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, the compost site is only
permitted to take trees, tree limbs, grass and leaves.


City Administrator Logan Burns said the compost site has been receiving banned
material such as construction material, processed lumber, tires, household
trash and even dead animals.


"Just a friendly reminder that only grass and tree limbs go out to that site," said Burns. "We do have cameras out there. They have already taken care of the illegal dumping issue that happened yesterday."

KDHE does make inspections to the city’s site and can fine or revoke the city’s
permit for violations outside their permitted use. 

The City of Great Bend has
an ordinance that prohibits dumping materials at the compost site with fines
associated with the violation. The city turns any information over to the
Great Bend Police Department.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Crude prices are down three dollars in three days. Futures prices settled a dollar and a half lower on Friday. Near-month NYMEX crude closed the day at $76.65 per barrel. That's a weekly loss of 21 cents per barrel. By lunchtime Monday, prices were another three percent lower. NYMEX crude was trading below $75 and London Brent dropped under $78. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at $67 per barrel after dropping a dollar and a half on Friday.

The number-three crude-producing state in the country gets new energy leadership. Lynn Helms retired as Director of the North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources earlier this year after 26 years managing the state's dramatic rise in energy production. Nathan Anderson will take the reins as Director starting next month.

Output in North Dakota dropped below 1.2 million daily barrels for the second month in a row and the third time this year.&nbsp; Production dips to 1,175,000 barrels per day in June, down 1.9% from revised May totals. DMR reported a one-percent drop in North Dakota's gas-capture rate, and a more than one-percent drop in natural gas production.

Kansas regulators okayed ten permits for drilling at new locations, with two in eastern Kansas and eight west of Wichita. That's 614 new permits this year, compared to 800 reported a year ago at this time.

Operators completed 45 new wells across Kansas last week. That's 836 new well completions since the first of the year, compared to 1,096 by this time last year. Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 28 new well completions in the eastern half of the state and 17 west of Wichita, including one in Ellis County.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is down one in Western Kansas at 17 active rigs and unchanged east of Wichita at 12. The statewide tally is up 12 percent from a month ago but down 33 percent from last year at this time.

At 586 rigs, the Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes was two oil rigs lower and one gas rig higher last week. Texas was down three rigs. Oklahoma was up two.

The government is reaping a paper profit from lower crude prices to the tune of tens of millions of dollars. The Energy Department last week bought another 700-thousand barrels of crude for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.&nbsp; That's 12.3 million barrels since April, paying below $80 a barrel to replace crude we sold two years ago for over $95.Commercial crude oil inventories increased by 1.4 million barrels in the week through August 9th to more than 430 million. Stockpiles are about five percent below the five-year average for this time of year.

The EIA reports US crude production dipped from last week's all-time record. The Energy Information Administration reports weekly output averaging 13,287,000 barrels per day, down from more than 13.4 million a week ago. Cumulative production so far this year is up more than seven percent from last year at this time.

Crude-oil imports outpaced exports by two and a half million barrels a day. Product exports beat imports by 5.4 million, making the US a net petroleum exporter by nearly three million barrels a day.

Imports averaged 6.3 million barrels a day, up 61-thousand daily barrels from a week ago, but down 873-thousand barrels from a year ago.&nbsp; The four-week average is down about two percent from last year. EIA reports crude exports increased three percent from last week but dropping 18 percent from a year ago. Four-week average exports are down two percent.

Chevron says goes deep, despite extreme pressure. The company announced the first-ever offshore crude production from fields long thought to be out of bounds because of extreme sub-sea pressure.&nbsp; The company announced the first production from the $5.7 BILLION "Anchor" development, 140 miles off the coast of Louisiana. Project operators expect peak output will reach 75,000 barrels of oil and 28 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. Over the course of the next 30-years, the project will include seven sub-sea wells drilling in depths of about five-thousand feet, linked to what they call a Floating Production Unit. Reuters reports that up until now we lacked the equipment able to cope with pressures of up to 20,000 pounds per square inch.&nbsp;&nbsp;
