On Tuesday, Aug. 27, at about 10:15 a.m., deputies with the Barton County Sheriff’s Office stopped a maroon Ford Focus in the 100 block of Southeast 105 Avenue. The location was near the river bridge, just south of Ellinwood. When the deputy stopped the vehicle, the driver exited and fled on foot into the riverbed.

The second occupant of the vehicle, later identified as Natasha Robinson, age 20 of Larned, stayed with the vehicle. Upon questioning, Robinson provided false information to the officers and was later arrested for interference with a law enforcement officer as well as an outstanding warrant from the Barton County District Court for probation violation.

Law enforcement officers quickly surrounded the area and located the driver identified as Gefferey Palacio, age 21 of Great Bend. It was discovered Palacio had outstanding warrants through the City of Great Bend and was also charged with interference of law enforcement officer, operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license and was issued a citation for a defective windshield. 

Both were transported to Barton County Jail without incident. Both remain in jail as of this press release.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Ellinwood Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Deputies conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle and located suspected cocaine, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Sallabedra was transported to the Barton County jail without incident and booked on requested charges of possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and no drug tax stamp. The iconic Zarah Hotel building in downtown Great Bend is poised for a transformation as the “Lofts at the Zarah” project
has now started construction work. This $6.25 million endeavor
promises to breathe new life into the heart of the city and serve as a spark
for even more downtown revitalization.

The finished product will
feature 28 apartments with a blend of historic and contemporary
interior finishes, an elevator to the second and third levels, indoor mail
delivery, stainless steel appliances, and private laundry facilities in each
apartment. The project will create four studio units, fifteen
one-bedroom units, and nine two-bedroom units. 

Local craftsmanship lies at the
heart of this endeavor, with Great Bend-based Kustom Floor Designs, Inc.
leading as the general contractor. The local branch of Peoples Bank and Trust
is also on board to provide construction financing. The owners and developers
of the project are proud to enlist local investors, local financing, and local
contractors as a boost to the Great Bend economy.

Crucially, Lofts at the Zarah has leveraged a series of
gap financing and cost-reducing programs to make this project feasible,
including Moderate Income Housing and Kansas Housing Investor Tax Credit
funding from the Kansas Housing Resource Corporation as well as historic tax
credits through the State Historic Preservation Office and National Park
Service. Critical tax abatements were also endorsed by Great Bend’s local
governments through the Revitalization Housing Incentive District program. Additionally,
the project benefited from a local “Loft Grant”, a partnership between the City
of Great Bend and Great Bend Economic Development. These initiatives have been
instrumental in overcoming financial hurdles, highlighting the importance of
public-private partnerships in driving downtown revitalization. 

“The partners of MyTown have dreamed of making this
happen for many years now,” said Sheryl Cheely, longtime member of MyTown. “I’m
really looking forward to getting this finished so our community can see the

Construction starting on downtown Great Bend lofts

Residents around Barton County began reporting loud noises Wednesday morning shortly after 9:30 a.m. Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir spoke with the FAA in Wichita and said the sonic booms can be expected throughout Wednesday and Thursday.

"It's the Tulsa Air National Guard," he said. "They're going to be operating in the area (until approximately 10:30 a.m. Wednesday). Then, from 1:20 p.m. to 2:20 p.m. they'll be operating in the area. They will also be operating in this corridor (Thursday) from 3:15 p.m. to 5 p.m., and again (Thursday) from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., so we're probably going to hear multiple sonic booms."

A 2002 Chevrolet Blazer was stopped for a traffic infraction. The actions of the occupants appeared suspicious to deputies, therefore Menta, the sheriff’s office K-9 was deployed. The dog indicated the presence of controlled substances. During the course of the investigation, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were located in the vehicle.

Arrested at the scene were 63-year-old Devin Sullivan and 41-year-old Jennifer Willenberg, both of Great Bend. Both were charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and no drug tax stamp. Both have since posted a $10,000 bond and been released.

Hoisington's Annual Labor Day Celebration and high school football usually come together quite nicely in early September. This year, the Cardinal football team opens its season in Pratt on Sept. 6. Chamber Director Karen Baldyga said there will still be plenty to do on Friday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. with the Community BBQ and Beer Garden at Bicentennial Park. This year's event will have a special presenter in Superior Essex Communication.

"Normally, this has been put on by the ambassadors of the chamber," Baldyga said. "For this year, Superior Essex approached us and asked if they could put it on for us. We were excited to have them do that, especially since this is their 50th year here in Hoisington."

The barbecue portion of the evening will include a pulled pork sandwich and sides. A beer garden will also be available. Music will play throughout the evening and cornhole and other games will be available. Superior Essex employees will continue to help throughout the evening.

"They're actually going to be there serving the food, they're bringing in the food," Baldyga said. "There's going to be a small fee of $5, and that will go to help put on Labor Day every year."

Some tables will be available for the event but Baldyga encouraged attendees to bring their own lawn chairs.

Community BBQ to kick off Hoisington Labor Day this Friday

In August 2022, United Way of Central Kansas introduced Laundry Love in
Great Bend where the organization provides free laundry services for low- or
no-income families and individuals. The initiative was successful enough to expand
to Larned in February 2023.


United Way Executive Director Charell Owings said the goal of Laundry Love is
to help prevent physical and emotional strain that poor health and hygiene
places on the under-resourced in the community.


"The look on people's faces when they come and volunteer for the first time...they realize that the program is not just about doing laundry," said Owings. "It's really about the connections being made between the volunteers and even between the clients themselves. They help each other move laundry, answer questions and even give rides to each other. It's become a real community within this program."

Hosting the event at a laundromat once a month in each community, sponsors have
provided funds for up to five loads of laundry per family. United Way is always
looking for supplies, resources and other items to pull off the event.


"We like to have snacks on hand," said Owings. "A lot of times we have kids there. We have coloring books and Dolly Parton books. We'll take donations of snack items, water bottles and things to have out for the clients that come. We'll always take things like OxiClean or the random stuff you may only need once every three months. We'll always take those kind of donations."

Owings said between 25 and 30 clients take advantage of Laundry Love in Great
Bend each month. In Larned, between 10 and 15 clients make use of the service.


Laundry Love in Larned takes place on the final Wednesday each month from 4
p.m. to 6 p.m. at Santa Fe Laundry on Broadway Street.
In Great Bend, the event is the third Saturday each month from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. at Discount Laundry on Jefferson Street.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

places on the under-resourced in the community.
"The look on people's faces when they come and volunteer for the first time...they realize that the program is not just about doing laundry," said Owings. "It's really about the connections being made between the volunteers and even between the clients themselves. They help each other move laundry, answer questions and even give rides to each other. It's become a real community within this program."Hosting the event at a laundromat once a month in each community, sponsors have
provided funds for up to five loads of laundry per family. United Way is always
looking for supplies, resources and other items to pull off the event.
"We like to have snacks on hand," said Owings. "A lot of times we have kids there. We have coloring books and Dolly Parton books. We'll take donations of snack items, water bottles and things to have out for the clients that come. We'll always take things like OxiClean or the random stuff you may only need once every three months. We'll always take those kind of donations."Owings said between 25 and 30 clients take advantage of Laundry Love in Great
Bend each month. In Larned, between 10 and 15 clients make use of the service.
Laundry Love in Larned takes place on the final Wednesday each month from 4
p.m. to 6 p.m. at Santa Fe Laundry on Broadway Street.
In Great Bend, the event is the third Saturday each month from 10 a.m. to 2

The Barton Dance Department will host auditions for its upcoming “Nutcracker for the Golden Belt” production from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 31 in Studio 34 on the Barton Campus, with callbacks at 2 p.m. that afternoon.

Auditions for this classic holiday ballet are open to dance students ages seven and up. Ballet experience is not required for all sections, but taking ballet classes is highly recommended during the Nutcracker production season. The auditions will have two sessions, one from 10-11 a.m. for ages 7-11 and the other from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for ages 12-18. Dancers will need to arrive 15 minutes before their audition time. Adults interested in performing in Act I’s “Party Scene” should contact Barton Dance Instructor and Coordinator of Fine and Performing Arts Danika Bielek at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:bielekd@bartonccc.edu" target="_blank">bielekd@bartonccc.edu</a>.

“I also want to encourage all who want to be in the ‘Nutcracker’ to contact me even if they might not meet all the experience recommendations or requirements. We want to strive to find creative ways for everyone that wants to be a part of this production to contribute in some way, even if they’re not quite at the level some of the other dancers might be.”

Dance experience is required for all roles except adults in Act I. For ages 7- 11, dance, gymnastics, or sports experience is a plus but not necessary. Dance experience is mandatory for those auditioning in the 12-18-year category, with the additional requirement of currently attending dance classes. Dancers should come to the audition warmed up and dressed to dance.

Bielek said the Nutcracker project was inspired by a desire to promote ballet in the region while creating a new holiday tradition for the community.

“Aly Smith (Aly’s Dance Studio) and Maddy Rideaux (Be Dance Studio), and I have been talking about ways to bring more ballet technique to their dance students for a while,” she said. “Ballet is the foundation of dance performed on the stage, but sometimes students shy away from it because it is difficult and takes time to see progress. Creating our own homegrown “Nutcracker” as a collaborative project will help dance students experience the prize at the end of this process, which results in a magical production for all ages. Literally, earning that tutu.”

“Nutcracker for the Golden Belt” is funded through an “Arts Everywhere” grant of $10,000 from the Kansas Creative Arts and Industries Commission. These grants were awarded to 42 Kansas counties, including Barton, with special interest to promote the arts in rural communities. The KCAIC grants are funded through the National Endowment for the Arts and the Kansas Legislature. Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said it is important for the state to engage, connect, and support the abundant creativity that can be found throughout Kansas.

“The Kelly-Toland Administration knows strategic investments in the arts enrich our communities, strengthen our economy, and enhance our quality of life — all which make our state the best in the nation to live, work, and play,” he said.

As we move into the latter part of the growing season, it is time to consider late summer and fall pests as well as your plans for next year. Both stable and horn fly populations tend to decline over the dry, hot part of summer but can resurge in late summer into fall if sufficient rainfall occurs. Horn flies are found on the back and belly of the animals and stay constantly associated with the cattle host making topical insecticides (pour-ons, sprays and ear tags) effective control methods, with appropriate rotation. Stable flies in contrast feed preferentially on the legs of the animal for a short period of time (2-4 minutes), 1-2 times a day. This low contact time with the host makes chemical control difficult to achieve. Decaying hay and plant material is a primary breeding for stable flies, pay special attention to hay bale and feed wastage and surrounding crop fields.

House fly populations will continue to increase through the summer and can be a significant problem for feedlots and dairies. Minimize feed wastage spilled over bunkers and keep pens well scraped, paying special attention to areas around feed bunkers, water stations and under fence lines. Baits and traps can be useful against house flies, make sure the traps are placed away from buildings such as offices as they will attract flies to the location. Fall can also see face flies trying to enter barns and buildings for a place to overwinter. Sealing off cracks and crevices can remove these overwintering spots. If a second fall fly population boom occurs, any early season on-animal interventions applied are unlikely to still be effective this late in the season. If reapplying products within the same season, do not change insecticide group. Typing your insecticide active ingredient into this website will tell you which group it belongs to (https://iraconline.org/mode-of-action/classification-online/).

Larvae of the cattle grub should be treated in fall or early winter using oral medications or pour-ons. Treatment should not be carried out in January or February due to the potential for severe reactions. Lice populations also tend to thrive in cooler weather, watch out for patches of hair loss and rubbing, indicative of lice problems. Part the hair, especially along the neck and back of the animal and look for small cream insects about 1/16th of an inch. If large numbers of lice are observed, pour-on treatments can effectively treat lice infestation. Treatment must be repeated after two weeks to target any nits that were not killed after the first treatment.

The Golden Belt Community Foundation is thrilled to welcome its newest board members, whose diverse experiences and deep-rooted connections to the community will greatly enhance our mission. Joyce Miller Retired Teacher, St. John, KS Joyce Miller, a retired teacher from Macksville USD 351, brings a wealth of experience in education and community involvement to the board. A lifelong resident of Stafford County, Joyce has served as Secretary/Treasurer for the Stafford County Fair Board for 10 years. She lives in St. John with her husband, Lance, and enjoys spending time with her two children and grandchildren. Joyce is eager to learn how the foundation can further benefit the community and is committed to helping improve the area for future generations.

Kayla Johnson, M.D. Pediatrician, Odin, KS Dr. Kayla Johnson, a pediatrician at Clara Barton, is a proud native of Odin, KS, where she now resides with her husband and four children. She is also a member of the KU Medical Alumni Board. With a deep-rooted connection to the community, Kayla is excited to contribute to the foundation and looks forward to giving back to the supportive environment that shaped her upbringing.

Amber Littler, CPA Senior Accounting Manager, Rural McCracken, KS Amber Littler, a CPA and Senior Accounting Manager at Agiliti, returns for her second term on the board. Having previously served before her twins were born, Amber brings a unique blend of accounting expertise and firsthand experience with the foundation’s growth. Residing on a farm in rural McCracken, she is dedicated to supporting the foundation's goals and sharing her knowledge to benefit the community.

Katie Hammeke Office Manager, Burdett, KS Katie Hammeke, an Office Manager at Golden Valley Inc., is an active member of the Burdett community, contributing to numerous local projects and initiatives. Since moving to Burdett in 2006, Katie has been involved in fundraising for community improvements and supporting various local clubs. She is passionate about helping communities thrive and is eager to bring her accounting background and love for community service to the board.

Zach Stejskal Territory Manager, Timken, KS Zach Stejskal, a native of Bison, KS, brings a diverse background in both agriculture and business to the board. Currently a Territory Manager for AGCO and a farmer, Zach also serves in multiple leadership roles, including President of the Rush County Farm Bureau and Vice President of the Rush County Fair Board. Living on his family's farm south of Timken, Zach and his wife are expecting their first child in November. Passionate about his community, Zach is eager to leverage his broad experience to help grow the foundation and enhance the well-being of the Golden Belt region.

Golden Belt Community Foundation names new board members

What began as a hobby turned into a mission to preserve history. The United States produced nearly 300,000 aircraft leading up to and during World War II. Fifteen years after the war ended, few of the planes remained in flying condition. The Commemorative Air Force will bring its B-17 and B-25 to Great Bend Airfest on Sept. 20-22.&nbsp;

"We're one of 80 units that are across the U.S.," said Phoenix-based Mike Garrett, tour director for the group. "The Commemorative Air Force was founded in the late 1950s by a group of pilots who realized all our of WWII aircraft were underappreciated and were being scrapped, and that memory was being lost. The Commemorative Air Force decided to try and preserve those aircraft and we've been doing that ever since then."

The group has now restored more than 170 WWII planes. Great Bend Airfest will feature "Sentimental Journey," a B-17 that was turned into a water bomber to fight fires in California after the war. The B-25, "Maid in the Shade," was restored to its original 1940s military configuration after flying 15 combat missions.

"We bring our flying museum, as we call it, around the country and honor those who flew these airplanes and try to educate people about WWII because that's kind of forgotten now," Garrett said.

Planes were auctioned off after the war. Those that were not purchased were scrapped. "Sentimental Journey" was purchased, all her guns were removed, and she was lightened to carry water and flame retardant. She was acquired by the Commemorative Air Force in 1979, restored to military configuration, and has been flying ever since.

"Made in the Shade" was accepted by the U.S. Air Force in 1944, and was stationed in Corsica near Italy. She flew 15 combat missions over Italy and Yugoslavia in November and December of 1944, conducting low-altitude bombings of rail yards and railroad bridges. After the war, "Made in the Shade" was purchased by an insecticide company and used to kill fire ants in Alabama and Mississippi. Commemorative Air Force purchased the plane in 1981 and had her fully restored in 2009. The restoration work was done indoors, thus the name, "Made in the Shade."

Residents may have a chance to see the B-17 and B-25 in the sky at the same time for a planned flyover during the Great Bend High School football game against Buhler on Friday, Sept. 20. Flights are also available in both planes, starting at $375 for the B-25 and $475 for the B-17. On-ground tours will also be available at Airfest for just $5.

Barton CC Trustees meeting agenda & RNR hearing (8/27)

The big change orders via the Barton County Courthouse HVAC Renovation Project are largely finished, but smaller projects at other facilities continue. In March, the Barton County Commission approved a $182,748 remodel of the nurse's station at the Barton County Health Department. Tuesday morning, the board approved a change order to complete the work. County Administrator Matt Patzner explained the issue.

"As the project nears completion, a $3,843.30 change order has been submitted related to painting," he said. "This invoice reflects painting in the nurse's station, hallway, exam rooms, bathrooms, and offices. These will be covered with state-formula funds that are available."

Brentwood Builders won the bid to complete the work. Commission Chair Barb Esfeld noted the change order will be paid for via state funds and called the work necessary.

"I don't know how they did it without it," she said. "It's what you need. You can get into it from both sides instead of walking all the way around. It's just really handy. Long-overdue I'd say."
