State Rep. Brett Fairchild appearing on PBS show

RUSSELL COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 9:30a.m. Thursday in Russell County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Ford F150 pulling a trailer and driven by Ryan&nbsp;Willprecht, 35, Kearney, Nebraska, was westbound on Kansas 18 two and one half miles east of U.S. 281.

The pickup crossed the center line and struck an eastbound 2014 Ford Focus driven by Lizebeth&nbsp;Cline, 20, Luray.

EMS transported Cline to the hospital in Osborne. Willprecht was not wearing a seat belt and not injured, according to the KHP.

On Monday, March 10, at approximately 5:47 p.m., officers from the Great Bend Police Department responded to United Parcel Services (UPS) located at 2316 9th Street in Great Bend in reference to a suspicious package. 

Officers were notified that a package had been intercepted by staff and flagged as suspicious. Inside of the suspicious package, officers discovered 7.6 grams of crystal methamphetamine hidden within the contents of the package. The investigating officers were able to identify the suspect attempting to mail the package.

On Tuesday, March 11, officers responded to a residence located at 2087 NW 60th Street, in Stafford County in reference to the execution of a narcotics search warrant. Officers apprehended the suspect from the UPS incident identified as Chandler Wieland, age 57.&nbsp; Officers also apprehended Lisa Rugan, age 56, at the residence. During a search of the residence, officers located over 100 grams of methamphetamine, marijuana, other controlled substances, evidence of drug distribution, as well as illegal and stolen firearms.

Wieland was arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail and booked on two counts of distribution of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal use of weapons, possession of a stolen firearm and no drug tax stamp. 

Rugan was also arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail and booked on one count of distribution of methamphetamine, felony interference with law enforcement, possession of marijuana, possession of controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal use of a weapon and no drug tax stamp.&nbsp;

Great Bend police find 7.6 grams of meth in suspicious package

Saint Joseph Catholic School, in Ellinwood, has announced its coming school year will open under the direction of a new principal, Laurie Kolling, who has been teaching at the school these past two years. 

Kolling received a Masters of Science, with a focus upon administration, from Fort Hays State University in 2012. She is no stranger to leadership having previously served as Principal/Coordinator of Haskins Learning Center in Pratt and Principal of Eisenhower Elementary School in Great Bend. Her career in teaching began when she graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1984 with a degree in Elementary and Special Education.

Father Terrance Klein, pastor of Saint Joseph Church said, “We are very grateful for the service that Cami Thomas has given our school as both a classroom instructor and a lead teacher. Under her leadership our school received a significant number of grants, and we have been able to add on-campus instruction in music, band, and art. We are happy that she plans to continue her association with us. At the same time, we feel quite blessed that Laurie has agreed to become our principal. She has earned our trust and admiration. She brings with her a wealth of experience and specialized training, and she is a woman of deep faith and Christian commitment. This will be the first time in many years that we have had a principal fully licensed with the State of Kansas on campus.”

This Fall will mark the 140th&nbsp;anniversary of the school’s founding. Saint Joseph Catholic School is the oldest Catholic school in the southwest quadrant of the state. 

Father Klein added, “We have a long legacy of education based upon faith, Christian morals, and academic excellence. Laurie will help us ensure that we continue to lead in what we do.”

Barton hosting Enrollment Days to prepare students

The USD 428 Board of Education took time Monday night to recognize
employees that were celebrating career milestones. The Milestone Program is
based on five-year increments, recognizing years of service of licensed and
classified employees. 

The highest years of service acknowledged was 35 years
from Park Elementary School custodian Joseph Messersmith and Great Bend Middle
School teacher Gary Pinkall.


"Thank you (school board) for all of your service," said Pinkall. "It's much appreciated. It's been a wonderful time here. I thank all of you for all you have done for me."

USD 428 celebrated 91 staff members for milestones, representing 1,155 years of
combined service. Superintendent Khris Thexton and the district awarded each
employee with a gift in appreciation.


"I want to thank you all for giving your time and energy to our district," said Thexton. "We appreciate everything you do. If there is anything we can be of a service to you, please let us know."

Great Bend school staff recognized for career milestones

PAWNEE COUNTY — A Kansas felon will spend the rest of his life in prison for sex crimes involving juveniles.

On Wednesday, James Edwin Speer, 33 formerly of Larned, appeared in custody before Pawnee County District Judge Bruce Gatterman for felony sentencing, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett.

In July, a jury found Speer guilty of Rape of a Child Under 14 years of age and of Aggravated Oral Sodomy of a Child Under 14 years of age.

The crimes were alleged to have occurred at a residence in Garfield, Kansas on or about May 25 or May 26 in 2013. 

Testimony was presented at trial that during a conversation with her mother in August of 2020 the victim disclosed that when she was approximately 8 years old, she had been sexually assaulted at a party her father took her to. The Pawnee County Sheriff’s Department was then notified about the allegations by the mother. A formal forensic interview of the girl was performed by the Child Advocacy Center in Great Bend, Kansas.

At trial, the defendant presented an alibi defense arguing it was impossible for him to have committed the alleged acts as he was with another girl at the time. As part of the evidence at trial, the parties stipulated that in 2015 a jury convicted Speer of two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a 14 year old child. Specifically, the jury found Speer had sexual intercourse with a 14 year old child in an apartment in Larned in May or June of 2013 and he had sexual intercourse with a 14 year old child in an apartment in Larned in June of 2013.

Based on the age of the victim, under Jessica’s Law, the presumptive sentence was a life sentence with a mandatory requirement the defendant serve a minimum of 25 years. As part of his opportunity to address the Court at sentencing, Speer denied he had committed the newly convicted offenses and requested the Court consider the efforts he has made in prison to reform himself and sentence him to a reduced sentence such that he could be released in 2027.

Pawnee County Attorney Douglas McNett argued that based on Speer’s other prior sexually violent crimes the Court should find that Speer is an Aggravated Habitual Sex Offender and sentence the defendant to life without the possibility of parole.

After reviewing the presentence investigation report and hearing the arguments presented, Judge Gatterman agreed with the State that Speer met the statutory criteria of an Aggravated Habitual Sex Offender having been convicted of at least two prior sexually violent crimes. As such, the Court sentenced the defendant to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The defendant will also be subject to lifetime offender registration as a sex offender.

Under Kansas sentencing laws, all prior convictions which occur prior to sentencing in the current case are considered in determining criminal history, regardless of whether the offense that led to the prior conviction occurred before or after the current offense or the conviction in the current case.

Speer is currently in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections serving a sentence for his 2015 Pawnee County sex offense convictions. Following the sentencing, the defendant was advised of his rights to appeal the convictions and sentence imposed.

The Court previously denied the defense motion for a new trial at a hearing conducted on August 22, 2024.

 </figure>PAWNEE COUNTY — A Kansas felon will spend the rest of his life in prison for sex crimes involving juveniles.On Wednesday, James Edwin Speer, 33 formerly of Larned, appeared in custody before Pawnee County District Judge Bruce Gatterman for felony sentencing, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett.In July, a jury found Speer guilty of Rape of a Child Under 14 years of age and of Aggravated Oral Sodomy of a Child Under 14 years of age.The crimes were alleged to have occurred at a residence in Garfield, Kansas on or about May 25 or May 26 in 2013. Testimony was presented at trial that during a conversation with her mother in August of 2020 the victim disclosed that when she was approximately 8 years old, she had been sexually assaulted at a party her father took her to. The Pawnee County Sheriff’s Department was then notified about the allegations by the mother. A formal forensic interview of the girl was performed by the Child Advocacy Center in Great Bend, Kansas.At trial, the defendant presented an alibi defense arguing it was impossible for him to have committed the alleged acts as he was with another girl at the time. As part of the evidence at trial, the parties stipulated that in 2015 a jury convicted Speer of two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a 14 year old child. Specifically, the jury found Speer had sexual intercourse with a 14 year old child in an apartment in Larned in May or June of 2013 and he had sexual intercourse with a 14 year old child in an apartment in Larned in June of 2013.Based on the age of the victim, under Jessica’s Law, the presumptive sentence was a life sentence with a mandatory requirement the defendant serve a minimum of 25 years. State of Kansas is divided into 31 judicial districts. With an average of 237
active clients, CKCC has the seventh highest caseload in Kansas. Barton County
Commissioner Tricia Schlessiger said despite the high caseload, CKCC receives the
28th lowest funding out of the 31 districts.


"I brought this to the forefront after sitting in on a three-hour Zoom meeting on the funding formula for community corrections," said Schlessiger. "The differences between the judicial districts across the state became very clear in that meeting. We are clearly underfunded for the miles we cover and the clients we serve. I feel that is having a direct impact on our community."

The 20th Judicial District also includes Stafford, Russell,
Ellsworth and Rice counties. The district covers over 4,000 square miles,
making it the fifth highest district in Kansas in square miles. The necessary
drive time chips away at time spent with clients.


CKCC Director Brooke Haulmark said getting funded $3,408 per client each year,
the 20th Judicial District falls below the state average of $3,560.


"With how many clients we're serving and square miles, the timeframe it takes to do the services we need to do, we can show that we're underfunded compared to the other jurisdictions," said Haulmark. "Also, our work suffers because of that. Ultimately, that harms our community. In order for us to do better, they need to fund us appropriately."

The Kansas Department of Corrections provides grants to county departments to
fund community corrections. The Barton County Commission approved submitting a
letter of support to the state for increased local funding.


Haulmark said one of CKCC’s Intensive Supervision Officers (ISO) recently
resigned due to being overworked. Because of this, CKCC is 288 staffing hours
short every month.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Chase Raymond Public Schools had the distinct honor of welcoming Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson and Kansas School Board Member Dennis Hershberger for a special visit in celebration of Read Across America Week. Dr. Watson engaged with our youngest learners by reading to our primary students, highlighting the importance of literacy and fostering a love of reading at an early age. Otherworldly 3D art will be front and center at the Shafer Gallery’s “Sci-Fi Ceramics” event, led by artist John Hamilton April 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Ceramics Lab, in the Technical Building, room T-151.

This free workshop will feature discussion, demonstrations, and small hands-on elements that showcase how Hamilton creates his unique artwork. Lunch will be provided from noon to 1 p.m. All skill levels are welcome, but the recommended age is high school or older.

“Each piece employs trompe l’oeil, inviting viewers to question materials and engage with intricate details,” he said. “My goal is to create functional art that belongs on counters and shelves, not hidden in cabinets. Beyond utility, my work serves as a conversation-starting focal point, standing apart from everyday aesthetics.”

Hamilton’s journey with clay began in 2005 at Colby Community College, leading to a BFA in Ceramics and a bachelor’s degree in art education from Fort Hays State University in 2012. He returned to Colorado, settling in Arvada with his wife and daughters. As a studio assistant at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, he maintained the studio, made glazes, and loaded kilns before becoming an instructor and Artist in Residence. His role expanded to firing cone 10 kilns, assisting students, organizing pottery sales, and setting up gallery shows. In 2021, he took on his first managerial role at the Art Students League of Denver, and in the fall of 2024, he returned to manage the Arvada Center’s program while continuing to teach and sell his sci-fi-themed pottery.

The workshop will precede the reception for the BartArt exhibit, which features art from local artists and friends of the gallery. Hamilton will serve as the guest judge for this exhibit, and the awards ceremony will be part of the reception at 6:30 p.m. that evening. Light refreshments will be served, and admission is free.

Alfalfa weevil eggs are laid inside alfalfa stems in the fall and spring. Larvae feed on terminal and upper plant leaves early in the spring. Resulting in damage occurring before the first cutting.

Alfalfa weevil degree days are a great way to estimate what might be going on in the field and serve as a useful tool to know when to time scouting. Alfalfa weevil eggs begin hatching after 300 degree days have accumulated. Since we cannot determine if eggs present were laid the previous fall or the current spring, in Kansas, scouting should start after 180 degree days have accumulated starting from January 1.

How do I know how many degree days have accumulated?

For the most up-to-date alfalfa weevil degree day accumulations, visit the Kansas Mesonet Degree Days Calculator https://mesonet.k-state.edu/agriculture/degreedays/ then find the Mesonet weather station closest to you--click onto it, then click onto Alfalfa Weevil and click submit. That will show you the Alfalfa Weevil Growing Degrees accumulation. The Hays Mesonet has 167 degree days accumulation at the time of this writing.

Be aware of insecticide resistance - while warmer spring temperatures allow for faster alfalfa weevil development, be aware that dramatic temperature drops can slow down alfalfa growth, making the plants unable to keep up with feeding damage. Treatment may be warranted in shorter fields between 3 and 7 inches tall when feeding is evident on the top inch of growth and 1 to 2 larvae are present. If a field is treated, it is important to verify that the expected amount of control was achieved. In 2020, populations of alfalfa weevil resistant to lambda-cyhalothrin (Warrior II w/Zeon Tech) were verified in northwest and southwest Kansas and Oklahoma. While this resistance has not appeared to become a widespread problem for Kansas producers, be aware and after application continue to scout fields. Oklahoma continues to have resistance statewide. Numerous products are available for alfalfa weevil control in Kansas. When making management decisions, it is important to rotate modes of action, i.e. pyrethroid and organophosphate, this is one way to slow down the development of resistance. One update to control options to be aware of was in 2024 a reversal of the EPA’s ruling to ban chlorpyrifos (Lorsban and others). Following that, the EPA issued a technical correction in which 11 special uses of chlorpyriphos were allowed. Among the 11 special uses pertinent to Kansas are alfalfa, cotton, soybean, and winter wheat.

If a field is treated, it is important to verify that the expected amount of control was achieved. In 2020, populations of alfalfa weevil resistant to lambda-cyhalothrin (Warrior II w/Zeon Tech) were verified in northwest and southwest Kansas and Oklahoma. While this resistance has not appeared to become a widespread problem for Kansas producers, be aware and after application continue to scout fields. Oklahoma continues to have resistance statewide. Numerous products are available for alfalfa weevil control in Kansas. When making management decisions, it is important to rotate modes of action, i.e. pyrethroid and organophosphate, this is one way to slow down the development of resistance. Unified School District 431 has started the search for a new superintendent, following the resignation of Superintendent Patrick Crowdis, effective June 30, 2025. As part of the selection process, the USD 431 Board of Education invites community members to submit their input on desired characteristics of a new district leader.

Crowdis has served the district for five years, starting in July 2020. He resigned to pursue an opportunity to return to Dodge City Public Schools, where he served as an assistant principal at Dodge City High School before joining USD 431.

“The Board of Education extends its sincere gratitude for Patrick’s dedicated service and contributions to the students and the Hoisington community,” said Becky Mooney, USD 431 School Board president. “We wish him the best in the next steps in his career.”

The Board of Education immediately began the process of searching for a new superintendent. The board has engaged the Kansas Association of School Boards to assist with the superintendent search, which will focus on identifying a highly qualified and experienced leader who will build upon the district’s strengths and address challenges.

"Our priority is to ensure a smooth transition and to find a superintendent who will continue to advance our district's mission of providing a high-quality education for all students," Mooney said. "We are committed to a transparent search process that involves the entire community."

As part of the search, the Board of Education and KASB is conducting an online survey to seek input on desired characteristics of the new superintendent. The survey will take approximately five minutes to complete and can be accessed at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/usd431ss .
