Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is not going away. The United States Department of Agriculture reports more than 72.5 million chickens, turkeys, and other birds have been killed since the outbreak began in 2022. On Tuesday, Cal-Maine Foods near Chase reported it had temporarily ceased production after positive HPAI tests. The company has reported the virus has impacted nearly 700,000 laying hens, or nearly two percent of its total flock. Alicia Boor, agriculture and natural resources agent in the Cottonwood District for K-State Research, reminds poultry providers to be cautious.

"Poultry farmers need to be very careful -  if you can, have your birds indoors because it is transferred from the wild birds that are migrating through," she said. "If you can have them indoors - indoor water sources, indoor feed - so they have a lesser chance. That's the best thing you can do for those animals is to completely isolate them."

The Kansas Department of Agriculture indicated the first positive test in Barton County on Dec. 8, of a non-poultry bird, though no test date was indicated. Boor said for those unable to move birds indoors, disinfecting food and water treys routinely can help mitigate the spread of the virus. Flock owners should watch for symptoms and report any incidences to their local veterinarian so it can be turned over to state authorities. The virus will likely be around for a while.

"Usually, when the birds finish their migration through the area it will calm down again until they start coming back to the north in the spring," Boor said. "It's being transferred more readily because we have so many migrating birds."

Officials believe there is little risk the virus will be contracted by humans. Symptoms among birds include coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, decreased egg production, and soft-shelled or misshapen eggs.

First avian influenza case reported in Barton County

As most Kansans know, whole wheat products provide a great amount of nutrients such as fiber, B vitamins, folate, and more. It is used worldwide in many recipes, and if you pay attention to food labels, you are aware that gluten, a protein found in wheat, is in products you might not expect. In fact, those with gluten sensitivity have to exclude many foods that contain the protein because their body mounts an immune response that attacks the small intestine.

Those with gluten intolerance can experience increased inflammation throughout the body, fatigue, chronic digestive issues, and headaches.

However, breakthrough research from Kansas State University has found a method to develop wheat-based foods that contain lower amounts of gluten. This discovery may lessen the adverse effects for those with celiac or other autoimmune diseases.

Eduard Akhunov, University Distinguished Professor in K-State’s Department of Plant Pathology and director of the Wheat Genetics Resource Center states that gluten likely will never be completely removed from wheat since it is important for bread-making. Gluten provides the texture, flavor and moisture in such products as bread, bagels, and noodles. Even though reduced levels of gluten achieved in this study won’t make wheat immediately safe for those with severe levels of celiac disease, Akhunov says, “It is important to step forward.”

The nature of wheat breeding research means varieties with reduced gluten content may not be available to consumers for many years, but this study will broaden the options available for those with minor gluten sensitivity, and with further research, it could pave the road for developing new varieties that will be safer for people with celiac disease.

Aaron Harries, the vice president of research and operations for Kansas Wheat, made a good point when he said, “There are many wheat farmers and members of their families in Kansas

that have celiac disease. It is ironic and unfortunate that they raise wheat for a living but can’t eat wheat foods. Most consumers would prefer not to give up wheat foods in their diet. Developing wheat varieties that are consumable by people with celiac disease would make their lives much easier.”

Dr A.J. Tarpoff, KSRE Beef Veterinarian will cover topics including: Stages of the normal calving process and tips to handle difficult calving situations, when and how to intervene, the calving process, and demonstrating proper use of calving equipment on a life-size cow and calf model.

A calving kit door prize drawing will happen at the end of the evening, sponsored by South Wind Animal Health.

Cow-calf Clinic, Jan. 10 Kansas State University beef extension specialists and agents will host a cow-calf production clinic January 10th at the Ellis County Extension office located at 601 Main St in Hays.

The clinic is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will focus on “Navigating Opportunities and Risks: Production and Forage Considerations,” with discussion on local conditions encountered by cow-calf producers.

The clinics will also include interactive polls, forage sampling in a drought year, implications of -forage sampling and presentation by K-State agricultural economist Jenny Ifft, who will discuss making dollars and cents of risk management tools.

There will be a $10 cost payable at the door and a meal will be provided. RSVP by Jan. 5th for a meal count by calling 785-628-9430 or emailing Theresa Meis at tam3@ksu.edu.

Agricultural Producers Meeting Extension agents Clint Laflin and Alicia Boor will host a joint extension program in Ellsworth, Kans. on Thursday January 18th, 2023. Topics covered include financial budgeting, understanding interest rate trends, risk management insurance options, and farm family transitions.

Experts from local banks, the Kansas Farm Management Association, and Kansas State Research and Extension will serve as speakers, and be on hand to answer attendee questions.

Registration cost is $10 payable at the door by cash or check. The event will take place at the Ellsworth Health and Recreation Center: 221 West Douglas Ave, Ellsworth, KS 67439.

Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. with coffee and doughnuts provided, followed by our first speaker. The event will conclude by 3 p.m.

BOOR: January programs from K-State Research and Extension

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring not even a mouse. Hold on just a minute!

The holidays can be a time of extra stress –money flying out the door, too many places to be in too little time, schedules are upset, food that we don’t eat every day, and just general chaos!

Plan ahead now for some inexpensive fun ways to just be together. Drag out the books – share one that your child loved when they were small and read it together using your best character voices. Make a trip to the library to pick out a new book – every library has great librarians who would love to make reading recommendations for you!

When is the last time you played “crazy eights”, “old maid”, or had an energetic game of Uno? In addition to using skills of taking turns and being cooperative, youth practice counting and paying attention to details.

Have you put a jigsaw puzzle together as a family? Unless you do these often, don’t start with a 1500 piece complicated one. Pick an easy one that everyone can participate in. Set up a card table in a corner and you may be surprised how often someone stops by it to add a couple of pieces.

My family held a gingerbread house contest for many years. Now before you think these are huge, magical creations, let me tell you that they are made from graham crackers, frosting, and whatever odds and ends of candy and cereal that show up – Halloween candy was a regular ingredient! The planning and giggles that went into these creations were so much fun to watch and my favorite part was seeing the big kids pair up with the little kids to help them learn about structure, creativity, and often gravity!

Be silly and dance – turn on some music and dance in the living room! It’s good exercise for the body and the brain. Show off those 90’s dance moves and learn a few from your kids. It’s OK if people thinking we look silly because we are having fun!

Go outside! Take a walk, play kickball, throw a disc or snowball. I grew up on one of the best sledding hills in my town. Even if we only had time for one or two runs, we were throwing ourselves on a sled and racing down the hill. My parents were regular participants in this craziness!

There is an old saying along the lines that people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. This applies to your family also – Unplug and Be There!

During the holiday break, make time to spend time with your kids! Be There because that is what they will remember!

BERAN: Holiday fun

The new year is right around the corner, and now is the time to create health goals for 2024. Making healthy choices is something we get to do every day, but it does not have to be overwhelming. In fact, simply walking every day can improve heart health, strengthen the lungs, improve the quality of sleep, and fight osteoporosis! If walking to improve health is something you are interested in, a Walk with Ease class may be for you.

Walk with Ease (WWE) is here to help people with arthritis or other related conditions reduce pain, increase balance, strength, walking pace, and improve overall health. Walk with Ease is not only an evidence-based program, but it’s also fun! Participants have the opportunity to walk, stretch, and socialize during each session. WWE is a class created by the National Arthritis Foundation, and it is offered through Kansas State Research &amp; Extension.

Walk with Ease provides pain management and physical activity education to individuals and families. These classes include an educational book that covers various topics about walking and arthritis management, and the $12 registration fee covers the price of the book. Walk with Ease classes aim to help each participant implement realistic goals, maintain a long-term physical activity routine, and help Kansans find resources to stay active.

Are you ready to make the healthy choice the easy choice? Do you want to learn how to improve mobility and decrease pain? Are you eager to learn how to develop a personal walking plan?

Join us for our next Walk with Ease class that kicks off on Jan. 8! This indoor class will take place from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on MWF at the Hoisington Recreation Center in Hoisington, KS. Participants who attend and complete 14 of 18 classes in this Walk with Ease Series will be eligible to receive fitness equipment.

WINKEL: Walk with Ease is coming to Hoisington

In recent years, sulfur (S) deficiency in wheat has become more common in many areas of Kansas, particularly in no-till wheat. The likely reasons for this are a reduction in sulfur additions to the crop from atmospheric deposition (there is less S in the air now) and cooler soil temperatures as a result of no-till, which slows S mineralization in the soil. Some crops in the rotation, such as soybean, can also take up significant amounts of S, resulting in an S deficit for the following wheat crop. Most of the crop's S needs will occur after spring green-up when the crop goes through stem elongation.

Historically, S deficiency was most common in high-yielding crops grown on irrigated, sandy soils that are low in organic matter and subject to leaching. However, due to the reasons discussed above, an increasing number of finer-textured soils have shown S deficiency in recent years.

Generally, S-deficient wheat is yellow and stunted and is observed in patches in the field, especially in areas with previous soil erosion or movement. The patchy S-deficient areas of the field are often found on hilltops or side slopes where erosion has occurred, and soil organic matter is reduced or where leaching is more pronounced. Wheat in areas where topsoil was removed or significant cuts were made (i.e. terraced or leveled fields) also commonly shows symptoms.

Sulfur deficiency in growing crops is often mistaken for nitrogen (N) deficiency. However, unlike N deficiency, where older leaves show firing and yellowing, with S deficiency, the pale-yellow symptoms often appear first on the younger or uppermost leaves. Wheat plants with S deficiency eventually become uniformly chlorotic (yellow leaf tissue).

Sulfur deficiencies in wheat have been showing up early in the spring, shortly after green-up, before organic S is mineralized from soil organic matter and before wheat roots can grow into the subsoil to utilize any available S (sulfate) accumulations. Deficiencies of S are often difficult to identify because the chlorosis is not always obvious. Crops lacking S also may be stunted, thin-stemmed, and spindly. In the case of wheat and other cereal grains, maturity is delayed.

 </figure>In recent years, sulfur (S) deficiency in wheat has become more common in many areas of Kansas, particularly in no-till wheat. The likely reasons for this are a reduction in sulfur additions to the crop from atmospheric deposition (there is less S in the air now) and cooler soil temperatures as a result of no-till, which slows S mineralization in the soil. Some crops in the rotation, such as soybean, can also take up significant amounts of S, resulting in an S deficit for the following wheat crop. Most of the crop's S needs will occur after spring green-up when the crop goes through stem elongation.Historically, S deficiency was most common in high-yielding crops grown on irrigated, sandy soils that are low in organic matter and subject to leaching. However, due to the reasons discussed above, an increasing number of finer-textured soils have shown S deficiency in recent years.Generally, S-deficient wheat is yellow and stunted and is observed in patches in the field, especially in areas with previous soil erosion or movement. The patchy S-deficient areas of the field are often found on hilltops or side slopes where erosion has occurred, and soil organic matter is reduced or where leaching is more pronounced. Wheat in areas where topsoil was removed or significant cuts were made (i.e. terraced or leveled fields) also commonly shows symptoms.Sulfur deficiency in growing crops is often mistaken for nitrogen (N) deficiency. However, unlike N deficiency, where older leaves show firing and yellowing, with S deficiency, the pale-yellow symptoms often appear first on the younger or uppermost leaves. Wheat plants with S deficiency eventually become uniformly chlorotic (yellow leaf tissue).Sulfur deficiencies in wheat have been showing up early in the spring, shortly after green-up, before organic S is mineralized from soil organic matter and before wheat roots can grow into the subsoil to utilize any available S (sulfate) accumulations. Deficiencies of S are often difficult to identify because the chlorosis is not always obvious. Crops lacking S also may be stunted, thin-stemmed, and spindly. In anticipation of calving season, Kansas State University’s Department of Animal Sciences and Industry and K-State Research and Extension are planning a series of calving schools in January.&nbsp;

The program will outline overall calving management that includes stages of the normal calving process as well as tips to handle difficult calving situations.&nbsp;

Extension beef veterinarian A.J. Tarpoff said the&nbsp;goals of the event are to increase knowledge and practical skills, and to increase the number of live calves born if they need assistance. &nbsp;

The schools will also share tips on when and how to intervene to assist the cow or heifer. Presenters will demonstrate proper use of calving equipment on a life-size cow and calf model.&nbsp;

“Our goal is for producers to leave better prepared for calving season,” Tarpoff said. “We will demonstrate building a proper calving kit, then discuss timelines on when to examine cows for calving problems, and when to call your vet for help if things are not going well, and how to care for the newborn calf. It’s an excellent program regardless of one’s experience level.”&nbsp;

BOOR: Calving schools in January

According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry children and adolescents spend a lot of time watching screens, including smartphones, tables, gaming consoles, TVs, and computers. On average, children ages 8-12 in the Unites States spend 4-6 hours a day watching or using screens, and teens spend up to 9 hours. While screens can entertain, teach, and keep children occupied, too much use may lead to problems.

Parents may not always know what their children are viewing, or how much time they are spending with screens. Children may be exposed to:

· Videos of stunts or challenges that may inspire unsafe behavior

· Not enough outdoor or physical activity

· Less time learning other ways to relax and have fun

Managing screen time is challenging for families. Your child is never too young for a screen-time plan. Start when they are young so they know the rules and know what to expect. Until 18 months of age only allow video chatting along with an adult (such as with a parent who is out of town). Ages18-24 months should only have screen time that is educational programming and is

watched with a caregiver. For children 2-5, limit non-educational screen time to about 1 hour per weekday and 3 hours on the weekend days. For ages 6 and older, encourage healthy habits and limit activities that include screens. Turn off all screens during family meals and outings. Learn about and use parental controls. Avoid using screens as pacifiers, babysitters or to stop tantrums. Turn off screens 30-60 minutes before bed and do not allow screens in bedrooms.

Some baseline rules would include screen free times and zones within the family and home. Plan media free times such as family dinners, while doing homework, or on outings to stores. Another example would be to decide on media-free, unplugged locations in homes, such as bedrooms and bathrooms. As a parent or caregiver, set a good example and turn off your screens or set your phone to do not disturb during family time. Share this information with all caregivers including grandparents so everyone is on the same page.

The key takeaway is to find a healthy balance that works best for your children and family. Children need healthy boundaries and that includes screen time. Children learn best by face to face interactions with other children and adults. Development and health can be affected by too much screen time. Screen time affects how children feel, learn, think and behave. Make a long-term investment in your children’s health and well being by setting up a plan and talking about it regularly.

Many reactions occur within the body during an attempt to deal with stressors. A few short-term effects include increased adrenaline, cortisol production (the stress hormone), or muscle tightness. Chronic stress affects our physical, emotional, and social well-being, and symptoms such as irritability, fatigue, changes to eating habits, or burnout can occur.

As you can see, there is a broad spectrum of stress depending on severity. Acute stress lasts no longer than one month and typically occurs right after a stressful event such as an interview or performance.

Chronic stress can also develop after a stressful event, but this type is ongoing and persistent. It can be caused by losing a loved one or struggling with poverty to name a couple of examples.

Living in a state of stress for an extended amount of time is not healthy in any aspect of well-being, but if we aren’t careful, life can become overwhelming and stress can be difficult to manage. Stress is proven to have severe effects on mental health and the development of chronic illnesses. In fact, it is estimated that 90 percent of illness and disease is stress-related according to medical research. When chronic stress is present, it can interfere with your physical functioning and bodily processes. This is linked to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and heart disease.

WINKEL: Managing the strain of stress

Colder weather has finally arrived in Kansas. This past weekend’s snowfall and plummeting temperatures have assured us that we are not skipping winter this year, much to my dismay. Some people get refreshed with the cooler temperatures. I, however, can live without the cold weather as I just want to hibernate inside where it is warm. I really dislike being cold, but my children remind me that there are people (like them) who prefer the cooler temperatures.

I do have to admit the snow was pretty and I love how it quiets our busy life. Not to mention the moisture is much appreciated. This brings us to the dilemma of exercise. Many love to exercise outdoors but how do we stick to our routines and healthy lifestyles if the weather has turned down the temperatures?

The Arthritis Foundation and Institute on Aging offers a few tips for Cold Weather Exercise:

Time it right. Joint stiffness may be worse when you first wake up, making an early morning workout uncomfortable and painful. If so, take your walk later in the day when it’s warmer outside and your joints have loosened up. Plus, if you’re taking pain medications, waiting gives them a chance to kick in before you exercise. To warm your joints up faster, pop your workout clothes in the dryer for five minutes while you get ready.

Dress in loose layers. Dress in several layers of loose clothing to trap warm air between them. Wear a waterproof coat or jacket if it’s snowy or rainy and don’t forget a hat, scarf, and gloves. In general, start with a thin, synthetic layer (not cotton), add a layer of fleece, and top with a waterproof, breathable outer layer.

Drink up. Hydration is more often associated with sweating and the summer months, but it’s just as important to drink plenty of water in winter, too. You still sweat and lose fluid in cold weather so make sure you stay hydrated. Dehydration can affect mood and even brain function. In general, drink about 16 ounces (two cups) of water two hours before a workout.

Protect your extremities. Working out in cold weather exposes your hands, feet, ears and nose to severe temperatures. If you have Raynaud’s disease, a condition that causes abnormal sensitivity to cold and restricts blood flow to fingers and toes, wear mittens instead of gloves and use chemical hand warmers in your mittens and boots. Keep your head and ears warmer with a hat or beanie.

Wear sunblock. Even in the cold, a sunny day can result in sunburn. This is especially true if you have psoriasis or lupus, or if you take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or methotrexate, which can make your skin more sun-sensitive. Make sure you wear appropriate sunscreen (SPF 50) on exposed parts and protect your eyes with sunglasses or ski goggles. Remember to reapply if you’re sweating or after more than two hours outdoors. Include a soothing lip balm with sunscreen to prevent windburn and sunburn.

Get traction. Ice isn’t the only danger when walking or exercising outdoors. Packed snow can also make you lose your footing and cause a fall. “Look for ways to get added traction,” says Tom Holland, exercise physiologist and fitness consultant. He recommends simple cleats to strap on your shoes that provide traction when walking on ice or snow. Trail shoes also provide more grip and stability than running or walking shoes that are made for the road.

Safety first. Take a phone and let people know where you’re going, says Holland. “If you slip or fall while walking or biking it’s a good idea someone knows where they can find you.” In addition, choose a neighborhood that’s familiar to you, so if large snowbanks or road detours prevent you from taking your regular route, you’ll know how to find your way back home, Holland adds.

Warm up and cool down. Before you go outside, spend a few minutes warming up, which is especially important when you have arthritis. Warm up by marching in place or on a treadmill for 5 to 10 minutes at a slow-comfortable pace, and then stretching out all major muscle groups. After your workout, take time to cool down and stretch out.

Think low-impact. Cardiovascular exercise does not have to include high-impact exercise such as skiing, jogging or running. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and walking are low-impact cardio options that are not only easier on joints but also provide all the benefits of physical activity.

Take it inside. On the coldest winter days, it’s best to work out indoors where you can more easily control the environment. Walk at the mall, pedal a stationary bike, go for a swim at the local aquatic center or take an exercise class at the gym. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, cold weather itself should not be a barrier to exercising outdoors, especially if you are accustomed to it. However, those with Raynaud’s syndrome, heart disease or asthma are at highest risk of being impacted by the cold and may need to avoid outdoor exercise in frigid temperatures altogether.

Remember, staying active has many benefits to both your mental and physical health. Find a way to keep active, even when the weather isn’t cooperating.

 </figure>Colder weather has finally arrived in Kansas. This past weekend’s snowfall and plummeting temperatures have assured us that we are not skipping winter this year, much to my dismay. Some people get refreshed with the cooler temperatures. I, however, can live without the cold weather as I just want to hibernate inside where it is warm. I really dislike being cold, but my children remind me that there are people (like them) who prefer the cooler temperatures.I do have to admit the snow was pretty and I love how it quiets our busy life. Not to mention the moisture is much appreciated. This brings us to the dilemma of exercise. Many love to exercise outdoors but how do we stick to our routines and healthy lifestyles if the weather has turned down the temperatures?The Arthritis Foundation and Institute on Aging offers a few tips for Cold Weather Exercise:Time it right. Joint stiffness may be worse when you first wake up, making an early morning workout uncomfortable and painful. If so, take your walk later in the day when it’s warmer outside and your joints have loosened up. Plus, if you’re taking pain medications, waiting gives them a chance to kick in before you exercise. To warm your joints up faster, pop your workout clothes in the dryer for five minutes while you get ready.Dress in loose layers. Dress in several layers of loose clothing to trap warm air between them. Wear a waterproof coat or jacket if it’s snowy or rainy and don’t forget a hat, scarf, and gloves. In general, start with a thin, synthetic layer (not cotton), add a layer of fleece, and top with a waterproof, breathable outer layer.Drink up. Hydration is more often associated with sweating and the summer months, but it’s just as important to drink plenty of water in winter, too. You still sweat and lose fluid in cold weather so make sure you stay hydrated. Dehydration can affect mood and even brain function. In general, drink about 16 ounces (two cups) of water two hours before a workout.Protect your extremities. Working out in cold weather exposes your hands, feet, ears and nose to severe temperatures. If you have Raynaud’s disease, a condition that causes abnormal sensitivity to cold and restricts blood flow to fingers and toes, wear mittens instead of gloves and use chemical hand warmers in your mittens and boots. Keep your head and ears warmer with a hat or beanie.Wear sunblock. Even in the cold, a sunny day can result in sunburn. This is especially true if you have psoriasis or lupus, or if you take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or methotrexate, which can make your skin more sun-sensitive. Make sure you wear appropriate sunscreen (SPF 50) on exposed parts and protect your eyes with sunglasses or ski goggles. Remember to reapply if you’re sweating or after more than two hours outdoors. Include a soothing lip balm with sunscreen to prevent windburn and sunburn.Get traction. Ice isn’t the only danger when walking or exercising outdoors. Packed snow can also make you lose your footing and cause a fall. “Look for ways to get added traction,” says Tom Holland, exercise physiologist and fitness consultant. He recommends simple cleats to strap on your shoes that provide traction when walking on ice or snow. Trail shoes also provide more grip and stability than running or walking shoes that are made for the road.Safety first. Take a phone and let people know where you’re going, says Holland. “If you slip or fall while walking or biking it’s a good idea someone knows where they can find you.” In addition, choose a neighborhood that’s familiar to you, so if large snowbanks or road detours prevent you from taking your regular route, you’ll know how to find your way back home, Holland adds.Warm up and cool down. Before you go outside, spend a few minutes warming up, which is especially important when you have arthritis. Warm up by marching in place or on a treadmill for 5 to 10 minutes at a slow-comfortable pace, and then stretching out all major muscle groups. After your workout, take time to cool down and stretch out.Think low-impact. Cardiovascular exercise does not have to include high-impact exercise such as skiing, jogging or running. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and walking are low-impact cardio options that are not only easier on joints but also provide all the benefits of physical activity.Take it inside. On the coldest winter days, it’s best to work out indoors where you can more easily control the environment. Walk at the mall, pedal a stationary bike, go for a swim at the local aquatic center or take an exercise class at the gym. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, cold weather itself should not be a barrier to exercising outdoors, especially if you are accustomed to it. However, those with Raynaud’s syndrome, heart disease or asthma are at highest risk of being impacted by the cold and may need to avoid outdoor exercise in frigid temperatures altogether.Remember, staying active has many benefits to both your mental and physical health. A few days before you want to start these activities, call 811 for your safety and to prevent expensive damage to underground utilities. The website, http://call811.com, has easy-to-follow instructions for requesting this free service and detailed information concerning why you need to know what’s below.

The landowner knew where the pipeline entered and exited the field, and they assumed the pipeline was straight— it wasn’t. Sadly, fatal accidents do happen in soil excavations. If you dig any trenches or soil pits, safety should be considered from the very beginning of the project. Soils with sandy textures are more susceptible to collapse than soils with a higher clay content. If standing water is present in the pit, the walls are more apt to collapse. Digging in soils that have been disturbed before, such as digging next to a hydrant or foundation, means that the soil is far less stable than you might expect if that soil had never been disturbed before.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines exist on excavation safety, such as when it is necessary to shore the walls of a soil pit or trench. One important consideration is soil should be piled a minimum of 2 feet away from the walls of the trenches for two reasons: 1) Soil clods or excavating tools could roll back into the trench and cause injury to occupants. 2) It helps reduce the risk of a trench collapse by keeping the weight of the soil piles away from the trench edges.

Even if a soil pit is 5 feet deep or less, it is a good idea to angle the edges, especially if the texture is sandy, the soil is wet, or if the soil is otherwise unstable. This does create more disturbance, but if it prevents an accident, it’s worth it.

CAMPBELL: Safety first when planning deep tillage or earthwork

Choosing and Caring for Your Christmas Tree&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If selecting a cut tree, watch for these signs that the tree is too far gone.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; - Needles are a dull, grayish-green color

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; - Needles fail to ooze pitch when broken apart and squeezed

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; - Needles feel stiff and brittle

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; - Needles pull easily off tree

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Once you have your tree home, recut the trunk about one inch above the original cut. This will open up clogged, water-conducting tissues. Immediately place the trunk in warm water.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Locate the tree in as cool a spot as possible. Avoid areas near fireplaces, wood-burning stoves and heat ducts as the heat will result in excess water loss. Make sure the reservoir stays filled. If the reservoir loses enough water that the bottom of the trunk is exposed, the trunk will need to be recut. Adding aspirins, copper pennies, soda pop, sugar and bleach to the water reservoir have not been shown to prolong the life of a tree.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If you choose a living Christmas tree, be sure to dig the planting hole before the ground freezes.&nbsp; Mulch the hole and backfill soil to keep them from freezing. Live trees should not be kept inside for more than three days. Longer periods may cause them to lose dormancy resulting in severe injury when planted outside. You may wish to tag the tree at the nursery and then pick it up a couple days before Christmas. After Christmas, move the tree to an unheated garage for several days to acclimatize it to outside temperatures. After planting, water well and leave some mulch in place to prevent the soil water from freezing and becoming unavailable for plant uptake.

BOOR: Choosing and caring for your Christmas tree

Three small phrases can sum up how to improve health and improve quality of life:

The “three B’s” coined by Chelsea Reinburg, a fellow K-State Extension Agent, has a great point when she says, “I frame good health this way because it’s easy to remember, but sometimes doing all three is difficult. Doing all three is important and they all affect our health.”

The three B’s can provide a valuable road map for people who are looking to improve their health without complicating the process.

Most people have heard of the USDA MyPlate and know that it is a visual to show how breakfast, lunch, and dinner should be built.

“Half of your plate should be fruits or vegetables, a quarter should be grains – focusing on whole grains – and a quarter should be lean protein. Then, maybe a side of dairy, for those who consume dairy products,” Reinberg said.

Although it may seem difficult to build every meal based on the MyPlate method, it can play a big part in pursuing better health- whether that be weight loss or managing chronic illness such as high blood pressure or diabetes. There is also added benefit in diversifying our plate. Reinburg says, “As nutritionists, we say, ‘eat the rainbow,’ because each color has different nutrients, antioxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals.”

When exercise comes to mind, many people imagine going to the gym, doing intense cardio, or even running a marathon.

Instead, try framing your mindset around simple physical activities. This can be a steady 15-20 minute walk, or another activity that reduces sitting time and gets you away from the computer, tv, or phone screen.

“Being more physically active has some immediate benefits; for example, you may feel like your stress is reduced after a short walk. It reduces your blood pressure, at least temporarily,” Reinberg said.

Long-term benefits include a decreased risk of heart disease or diabetes; lower blood pressure; stronger bones and muscles; and better coordination and balance.

“Some studies have shown that no matter how healthy you are in terms of eating, if you sit for a majority of your day, you are still missing out on the health benefits that physical activity can provide.” Many aspects play a role in holistic well-being, and both nutrition and physical activity are major contributors.

Physical activity also plays a huge role in reducing stress, but colder weather can limit the opportunity to get outside and move. This is why it is especially important to acknowledge stress and to be self-aware of what triggers your stress.

The holiday season tends to increase stress. Family dynamics and finances are just a couple of examples that increase anxiety this time of year. Planning for these situations is important so you can be prepared to handle them. Reinburg advises, “Your plan of action should help to ensure that stress doesn’t get the best of you.”

It is extremely important to learn healthy coping strategies so you don’t continually struggle with anxiety. This is because chronic stress can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. It also takes a toll on mental health and quality of life. To learn more about healthy coping mechanisms, the American Psychological Association website has some fantastic tools.

Regarding the three B’s, Reinberg said, “You don’t have to tackle all three at the same time.”

Maybe you start with building a better meal by making half your plate vegetables. Then, once you’ve conquered that goal, you can move on to boosting your physical activity or balancing your stress.

There is no perfect formula when it comes to healthy living. Whatever strategy works for you is the best method because you’ll be more likely to stick to it!

WINKEL: Three B’s for better health

After a rapid drop in temperature from warm fall weather in Kansas, trees are keeping their leaves longer. Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini said this is called marcescence. &nbsp;

“Marcescence is defined by leaves that wither but do not detach from the plant,” Domenghini said. “When the temperature drops quickly, as we have experienced this fall, many trees didn’t have time to develop an abscission layer at the base of each leaf. The abscission layer is what separates the leaf from the tree and prompts it to fall to the ground.”&nbsp;

“If you are seeing trees with marcescence, nothing needs to be done now except prevent further stress,” she said.&nbsp;

Domenghini recommends further preventing stress by keeping the soil moist around trees entering winter. &nbsp;

“Without knowing the extent of the damage to the tree tissue, it is impossible to know what the end result will be, but if only a small portion of the tissue was killed the tree may still recover,” she said. “Trees with excessive internal damage will typically show symptoms the summer after the damage occurred.”&nbsp;

 </figure>After a rapid drop in temperature from warm fall weather in Kansas, trees are keeping their leaves longer. Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini said this is called marcescence. &nbsp;“Marcescence is defined by leaves that wither but do not detach from the plant,” Domenghini said. “When the temperature drops quickly, as we have experienced this fall, many trees didn’t have time to develop an abscission layer at the base of each leaf. BOOR: Tending to trees going into winter

Thanksgiving is around the corner and you’ve likely experienced a range of emotions planning for the holiday. Maybe you’re excited to see family, relieved to have a day off work, or maybe you’re stressed about how much food you’ve got to prepare. Despite the good or bad feelings related to Turkey Day, have you pondered the original name of the holiday itself, “Thanksgiving?”

Thanksgiving is rooted in the tradition of autumn harvest festivals. It has been celebrated for centuries, and George Washington made it an official holiday. He proclaimed that the people of the United States observe "a day of public thanksgiving and prayer."

As you prepare for the big day, I challenge you to remember the origin of the holiday: gratitude. Gratitude is the readiness to show appreciation and to return kindness. Research has found that people who consciously count their blessings tend to be happier and less depressed. In fact, a study showed that people who wrote one letter of thanksgiving for three weeks reported better mental health up to three months after the exercise ended. When people focus on the good in their lives, they tend to ruminate less on their negative experiences. Gratitude not only reduces the risk of depression, but it lowers stress which is a top cause of chronic illnesses including high blood pressure and heart disease.

As you can see, gratitude improves both mental and physical condition. If you’re interested in practicing gratitude for Thanksgiving and beyond, here are a few ways to make it routine:

· Recall three good things that happen to you each day. This may be a fun habit for you and your kids as you tuck them in at night!

· Keep a gratitude journal. Jotting down things you are grateful for is likely to change your perspective. You might see more positivity in the world around you. Looking through the pages of blessings in your life after a tough day may also be especially handy.

· Use your phone for good. We all find ourselves tied to our smart devices, so make it a priority to send a few “thank you” texts per week.

· Be self-aware of complaining. It’s easy to get drawn into a cycle of negativity when things aren’t going your way. To combat this habit, every time you complain, try to find the silver lining. When you can find the good in every situation, there is less room to fixate on the negatives of life.

Regardless of how you decide to practice gratitude, I encourage you to try it. Joshua Brown, a doctor of psychological science said it best, “Much of our time and energy is spent pursuing things we currently don’t have. Gratitude reverses our priorities to help us appreciate the people and things we do.”
