Sheriff: Kan. felon identified as suspect in deputy shooting, standoff

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect in connection with an officer involved shooting in Wichita.

Just before 1:30a.m. Monday, a Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy observed the driver of a red Lexus later identified as 26-year-old Kory Anziana of Wichita commit a traffic violation near the intersection of Pawnee and Meridian in Wichita, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

The deputy attempted to stop the Lexus and Anziana fled in the vehicle. The pursuit lasted approximately six minutes with the top speeds reported near 70 MPH. The pursuit ended when the Lexus became high-centered in the parking lot of the Regency Inn at 6125 W Kellogg Drive in Wichita.

Anziana shot at the pursuing deputy and two deputies returned fire. No one was struck by any of the gunfire. He then fled into an occupied room at the Regency Inn. One of the occupants of the room was able to communicate with motel staff and eventually law enforcement through a messenger app. Eventually, the occupants of the room walked out on their own. At approximately 8:25a.m. the deputies arrested Anziana.

He is being held on requested charges of Aggravated Assault, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Flee and Elude, Drug charges and three outstanding arrest warrants, according to Lt. Blick. Anziana has previous conviction that include theft and for drugs, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.
