JOHNSON COUNTY —Just 35 hours apart, discarded smoking materials caused two deck fires in Olathe.

Just after 4:30a.m. Sunday, Firefighters stopped a deck fire from spreading into a home at 15820 S Widmer Street in Olathe, according to a social media report from the Olathe Fire Department.

There were no injuries. Investigators say discarded smoking materials caused the fire. Damage estimated at $30,000

Just after 3:30 p.m. Monday, crews responded to a second fire on a deck at an apartment complex near 127th Street and N Mur-Len Road.  A timely 911 call helped keep the fire small.

Firefighters reminded, if you smoke, put cigarettes out, all the way, in an ashtray, bucket or container that won’t burn.  Put water on the ashes and butts to make sure they are really out before discarding them.
