SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the brutal death of a child have identified the victim as 5-year-old Zoey Felix of Topeka, according to a statement of Topeka Police.
Just before 6 p.m. Monday, police responded to a medical call at the Dillon’s fuel pumps located at 2010 SE 29th Street in Topeka.
Upon arrival, police found Topeka Fire Department crews working to save the girl. She was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced deceased.
Investigators determined that circumstances around the death were suspicious and quickly identified a suspect and arrested 25-year-old Mickel W. Cherry, 25, Topeka, who is known to the victim.
Mickel is being held on requested charges of Murder in the 1st degree; In the commission of a felony, and rape; offender is 18 or older and victim is under the age of 14. Police have not released details on the girl's cause of death or how the suspect knew her.
