Bat Cats fall to Monarchs 8-6

The Hutchinson Monarchs scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Sunday night and went on to beat the Great Bend Bat Cats 8-6 in game three of a four game series at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutch.

Great Bend was leading 2-0 when the Monarchs touched Bat Cat starter John Zerr for three runs and reliever Ian Henricks for three more to take a 6-2 lead. Hutch added a single run in the sixth before Great Bend scored three times in the seventh to make it 7-5. Hutch made it 8-5 in the eighth before Great Bend mustered a single run in the ninth for the final margin.

Great Bend is now a combined 0-7 against the top two teams in the Sunflower Collegiate League Cheney and Hutchinson and have an overall record of 12-14 and 11-12 in SCL action. Hutchinson improved to 14-4.

The Bat Cats now get a day off before trying to avoid the four game series sweep against Hutchinson on Tuesday night in one of two Sunflower Collegiate League showcase games at Eck Stadium in Wichita.

Game time is set for 5 p.m.
