Family pet dies in Kansas house fire

RILEY —A family pet died in a fire early Wednesday in the city of Riley.

 Just after midnight, the City of Riley Fire Department and the Riley County Fire District #1 volunteers were called respond to a fire at a home in the 300 block of North Broadway in Riley, Kansas, according to a media release.

Upon arrival crews found the two-story home with flames and smoke visible. 

Twenty-five firefighters with 13 fire apparatus responded to the scene along with the Riley County Police Department and Riley County Emergency Medical Services.

Two adults and one dog were inside the home at the time of the fire.

One adult escaped without injury, the other one was injured while escaping an upstairs bedroom. Unfortunately the family dog perished in the fire.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal. A damage estimate is not yet available.

  “It appears the fire started on the front porch and quickly spread to other areas of the home,” said RCFD#1 Deputy Fire Chief Doug Russell. “We want to thank all the volunteers for their hard work to extinguish this fire. We have a dedicated crew who give their time to support the community, and we are extremely fortunate to have their support.”
